Law of attraction tells us what we think, feel and believe impacts and/or determines our life outcomes, whether they are negative or positive. How does law of attraction explain

an unknown person’s random negative action against others? For example, people who are in the line of fire of a crazed terrorist, or unscrupulous attorneys who search for ways to line their pockets. I sometimes ask myself who is worse, the psychotic and misplaced terrorist or the political pundit who ruins the spirit of a nation.

It does make one ponder the course of being in the wrong place at the wrong time, or being targeted because they are visible. I have always believed in truth and honesty, yet the longer I live, the more I witness everyday people and those with authority abuse their word by blaming others and not being accountable for their actions. Everyone makes mistakes; honest mistakes are understandable, but planned perpetration is a different kind of “mistake.”

A positive mental outlook does help in weathering the minor and horrific ups and downs that happen during the course of one’s life. Belief in a higher power of truth, goodness and love give us strength to carry on. Healthy Beginnings mission is to present information and options that can benefit the reader. Whether it is learning new recipes for healthy eating, or ways to relieve pain, both psychically and emotionally, please enjoy this month’s issue.

Our hearts and prayers go out to those who lay dead due to the horrific shootings at the Naval Yard in Maryland, and to those devastated by the floods in Colorado.

Dawn Gowery

PUBLISHER’SLETTER

Our cover depicts a favored tradition of Halloween.

The carved pumpkin, or jack-o’-lantern, is a common

decorative piece, and is generally aglow on All Hallow’s

Eve. It is symbolic of the night where families gather,

costumed and primed for the door-to-door ritual we call

“trick-or-treating.”

The jack-o’-lantern itself has an interesting history, filled

with stories including a deal with the devil and a variety

of undead. It is also said that beets and turnips were used

as lanterns in the past, however the pumpkin has always

been the most popular in the United States.

Just remember, when you’re scooping out your pumpkin,

save the flesh for pie, cake, soup or bread. Sprinkle its seeds

with sea salt and toast them in the oven for a bit. For this

fun and imaginative ritual is all-inclusive: food, activity and

light, all wrapped into one spookily creative night!

There’s almost nothing worse than experiencing ear pain, itching, loss of hearing, or a sinus headache.

Ear Candling is an ancient practice, dating back to biblical times in Egypt, the Orient, as well as European cultures. This simple, gentle treatment removes wax from the ear, improving your sense of well-being, physical, mental and even spiritual. The candle is a long hollow tube made from unbleached muslin immersed in an aromatic herbal solution. After it dries, the cone is then dipped into beeswax. The cone or candle is then placed into the ear opening and the top of the cone is lit; soft warm white smoke billows down the tube into the ear and softens the wax. The flame on top of the cone creates a vacuum that pulls out built up wax, toxins, bacteria, dirt and residue from past medications. Ear Candling may also help with a dry hacking cough (a result of a sinus infection), sinus headache, tinnitus, and itchy ear. Today more people are seeking alternatives to digging in the ear with Q-tips or using a hydrogen peroxide flush to clean a blocked ear canal. Ear Candling is a relaxing, natural, non-intrusive treatment.

Chronic pain can drain you of energy, joy and hope, and make everyday activities seem like insurmountable obstacles. Over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications, prescription pain meds, and steroids may bring temporary relief, but they come with complications and do not address the underlying causes of chronic pain. For more genuine and permanent relief, it’s important to address what is causing the pain to be chronic.

Is inflammation causing your chronic pain? One of the most common causes of chronic pain is inflammation. Inflammation is the result of an immune response to remove harmful compounds, including damaged cells. It is necessary for healing and protecting the body,

however runaway inflammation keeps the immune system on red alert and can cause chronic pain anywhere (or everywhere) in the body. One of the most important things to address if you suffer from chronic pain is inflammation.

Anti-inflammatory diet for painThere are many, many biochemical, pathological, nutritional, hormonal, neurological, and stress related causes and perpetuators of chronic pain and ultimately they must all be eliminated to correct the problem. However, following an anti-inflammatory diet is foundational to dampening general inflammation. Many everyday foods are actually very inflammatory and people can experience considerable relief by removing these foods from their diet. For instance,

two of the most common pro-inflammatory foods are gluten and dairy, something most people eat at almost every meal. Many people have found considerable pain relief simply by eliminating these foods from their diet. You can find out which foods are inflammatory for you through a food sensitivity panel or by following an anti-inflammatory diet for about a month and then reintroducing foods one at a time every 72 hours and monitoring for reactions. And, if you find out you are allergic to gluten just know that is only the tip of the iceberg, but more on that in future articles.

Some people find a group of vegetables called “nightshades” cause pain and inflammation in their joints. Nightshades include eggplant, potatoes, peppers, tomatoes, tomatillos, and hot pepper products (cayenne, Tabasco, etc.). Simply removing nightshades from the diet has brought relief from joint pain for many.

However, don’t ditch vegetables completely. Ample vegetable consumption, including veggies that are cultured, is a key component to a pain-busting diet. Confusing huh? Eat vegetables, but don’t eat “these” vegetables. It can get complex, but that’s why Stanford and Harvard research

centers have estimated that there are 115 to 120 million chronic pain sufferers in the USA.

Ditch the sugar to tame chronic painIn conjunction with removing anti-inflammatory foods, it’s also important your diet works to stabilize blood sugar. Blood sugar that is too low, too high, or that swings between the two, will contribute to inflammation. One of the best ways to stabilize blood sugar is to ditch the sugar and refined carbohydrates. Not only does the sweet stuff destabilize blood sugar, it also directly causes inflammation. Eliminating or minimizing sweets is vital to taming chronic pain.

Unwinding vicious cycles of painThe problem with chronic pain is it can create vicious cycles, both in the immune system and in the brain that perpetuate pain. In other words, the pain itself stimulates the body to create more pain. Fortunately, certain nutritional compounds have been shown to help unwind these vicious cycles. They include therapeutic doses of emulsified and highly absorbable vitamin D3, omega 3 fatty acids, turmeric and resveratrol. Other natural compounds and therapies can also help with pain relief while you work on bringing down inflammation naturally. These nutritional compounds may work for some chronic pain sufferers and not for others, and successful dosages vary from one person to the next. So, at the very least, only try one substance at a time and monitor your response.

Examine the entire bodyIn the end, the best way to figure out what is causing your chronic pain is to do a full evaluation with a certified Functional Medicine Practitioner who will be able to fully examine each of the systems in your body. They will also be able to work with you to figure out the main cause or causes of your chronic pain, help you to eliminate them, and get you back to a normal life.

The oceans contain ninety percent of Earth’s water, which is too salty for drinking. Only the other 10 percent is available to humans, animals and plants for hydration.

Unfortunately, too much of that 10 percent is polluted. Drinking water can be intentionally or accidentally degraded anywhere along its route to your faucet. (Before running into the streets screaming in terror, be advised that probably not all of the following pollutants are found in your particular water supply.)

NoncomplianceIn 2003, a study by the Natural Resources Defense Council found that 19 of our country’s largest cities supplied drinking water that was contaminated at a higher level than the Environmental Protection Agency limits. Even though water may test fine at its source, deteriorated equipment and pipes can allow water contamination on its way to your home. The Environmental Protection Agency estimates that $384 billion over the next 17 years is needed to repair and replace our country’s thousands of miles of pipes, thousands of water treatment plants, storage tanks, and water distribution systems.

IndustryIn the United States, industry is the greatest source of pollution, and contributes the most deadly water pollutants. In 1996 the Environmental Protection Agency reported 40 percent of lakes, rivers and estuaries were too polluted to use for drinking, fishing and swimming. Manufacturing plants contaminate water with corrosives and poisons. The construction industry discharges gypsum, cement, abrasives, metals, and poisonous solvents into waterways and soil.

ChlorineIn this country, 98 percent of water providers who disinfect their water do so by adding chlorine to kill harmful bacteria. The chlorine does not discriminate, so it also kills the beneficial bacteria in stomachs and intestines that are necessary for proper food digestion and the killing of harmful bacteria from other sources. Sometimes the chlorine odor is so strong and the taste is so bad that many consider it too awful to drink.

Chronic Dehydration Part 14

emanates from natural deposits of radium and uranium. Drinking radiation-tinged water over time is a big cancer risk factor.

The radiation from nuclear plant disasters releases large quantities of radiation that travels worldwide. Being airborne, radiation spreads throughout the world and falls to earth with rain or dust, settles on vegetation, which cattle then eat. Or it falls into streams and lakes that are water supplies. In 2011, radiation from Japan’s Fukushima meltdown was found in American cities’ drinking water and in Vermont milk. Data at that time showed Boise, Idaho, had the highest concentration of radioactive isotopes in its rain.

The Environmental Protection Agency’s proposed solution last spring was to dramatically raise permissible radiation levels in drinking water and soil. According to director of the Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility, this would “increase a long-standing 1 in 10,000 person cancer rate to 1 in 23 persons who are exposed over and thirty-year period of time.”

Improve Your Water Quality

The aforementioned water pollutants reflect the price we pay for the unprecedented quality of life we enjoy today. The summer of 1969 was a turning point in America’s attitude toward water pollution when the Cuyahoga River caught fire in Cleveland, Ohio, as it has done a total of ten times since the Civil War. A few months later, President Nixon founded the Environmental Protection Agency, and a few months after that, the first Earth Day was held, and within five years, the Clean Water and Safe Drinking Water acts were signed into law.

While many continue efforts to stop unnecessary pollution of our environment, individuals opt to protect themselves by various means such as using other water sources or by filtering their household water. Next month, you can read about these proactive measures.

Staying hydrated or getting re-hydrated should not poison the body at the same time.

If you have had success curing or relieving disease through re-hydration, please contact JeanAnn at (775) 828-7194.

Food ProductionWater supplies originating in heavy food producing areas such as the Central Valley of California contain pesticides, nitrate, arsenic, and bacteria from the agricultural and dairy industries. These contaminants are absorbed by the earth and leach into underground aquifers that are tapped for drinking water. Pesticides have been linked, among other things, to Parkinson’s disease of the central nervous system.

Methyl Tertiary-Butyl EtherWater derived from some recreational lakes such as Tahoe has concentrations of MTBE (a known carcinogen in rats). This is the gasoline additive introduced in the 1980s to reduce smog. It got into Tahoe by leaking out of underground pipes connecting service station gas tanks to gas pumps. It also leaks directly into the water from boat motors, and the two-stroke engines of jet skis that excrete 25 percent of their gasoline into the water. People sensitive to MTBE can get seriously ill with flu-like symptoms. Other manifestations in rat studies were stomach upset, confusion, nervous system problems, kidney and liver damage, birth defects, lymphoma and leukemia, and tumors.

Fluoride Another contaminant is sodium fluoride, which does occur naturally as the pro-fluoridation ads claim. Most fresh water supplies contain less than .01 parts per million, which is about ten times less than the .07 to 1.2 ppm added to drinking water. But fluoride is also a chemical by-product of aluminum, cement, phosphate, and nuclear weapons manufacturing. About 90 percent of the drinking water fluoride comes from the manufacture of phosphate fertilizers, according to the Center for Disease Control.

Fluoride has long been used as a rat poison and is one of the basic ingredients in Prozac and Sarin nerve gasses. Fluoride destroys the digestively beneficial organisms in the stomach. People drinking water with unusually high levels of fluoride can suffer disfiguring tooth damage, bone disease, ulcers, reduced IQ, thyroid disease, and infertility. Because of this, international agencies like UNICEF assist developing nations to remove fluoride from their water. According to Reno journalist Ed Pearce, residents of Washoe County have twice voted to omit fluoride from their water.

Yet, we are counseled to add fluoride to our drinking water to strengthen tooth enamel even though it does not prevent cavities--as demonstrated by comparing fluoridated communities with those without fluoride, which have fewer cavities. It could be that it isn’t the fluoride that prevents cavities, but that parents concerned about the issue who vote to add fluoride to their drinking water are also religious about teaching good oral hygiene to their children, and that’s what produces the desired result.

RadiationRadiation is another naturally occurring water pollutant that

and can now recognize the sick, unprotected, dysfunctional cell and dispose of it as they would any other cells that are at the end of their life cycle. Salicinium has simply removed the cloak, allowing the body’s own natural immune response to work as it should.

Salicinium does not “kill” or “cure” fermenting cells-only the immune system can do that. Through the use of Salicinium, however, the immune system is returned to a functional state. Since Salicinium is a complex sugar, it is harmless to any normal cell in the body because a normal cell cannot assimilate complex glycomes.

Since it is a complex sugar, and normal (aerobic-oxygen using) cells have no b-Glycosidase enzyme to split the sugar off the molecule, healthy cells cannot assimilate it and do not absorb Salicinium. It is harmless to any normal cell in the body.

Salicinium is a prospective adjunct to orthodox chemotherapy as neither interferes with the function of the other, however, by using Salicinium, the dosage of the chemotherapy can be reduced to a fractionated (10-15 percent) of the full dose. This is especially true when the chemo drugs are administered in the setting of Insulin Potentiated Therapy (IPT).

This is an exciting new development in the field of cancer treatment!

Salicinium, a glycome (complex sugar molecule), does not actually kill the cancer cell. It enters into a metabolic reaction that shuts down the ability of the cancer cell to hide from the immune system. An active immune system then can recognize the cancer cell as abnormal and kill it without harming any normal cells.

In 1931, a German physician and scientist received a Nobel Prize for proving that all cancer cells primarily use a very primitive method of producing energy from sugar. It is called anaerobic metabolism (or glycolysis). This is actually a form of fermentation. It takes place in the liquid part of the cell called the cytoplasm, without the use of oxygen.

A person forms cancer for only one reason--a lack of sufficient oxygen to a certain subset of the 210 different types of cells known to make up the human body. This is called hypoxia. There are many things that can cause this hypoxia. In order to survive and keep producing energy, those cells must switch over to glycolysis as a source of their energy. At exactly the same time as fermentation starts, the now sickened, dysfunctional cells must also start protecting itself from the immune system. They do this by producing an enzyme called alpha-N-acetylgalactosaminidase, or for short, nagalase.

Nagalase has the ability to completely shut down the localized immune macrophage cell, whose job is to destroy any cell that has been harmed or is not functioning normally. It effectively “cloaks” the cancer cells from detection by the immune system. This is the reason that someone can have a strong functioning immune system and still be growing a tumor.

Salicinium is a glycome (complex sugar) molecule. The malignant cell sees sugar passing by in the bloodstream, invites it in, and very quickly another enzyme found only in fermenting cells (beta glucosidase) splits the sugar part off from the complex molecule. The non-glycome part of the molecule, when released, attaches to a part of the cells’ energy producing apparatus. This causes the cells to cease production of nagalase.

With stopping production of nagalase, the macrophage cells can resume their function, which was “turned off” by the cancer cells

Heartburn, gastritis, GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), stomach pain, acid stomach, sour stomach, it goes by many names and is one of the most common afflictions suffered by modern man. Traditional treatment demonizes stomach acid, which is one of our most important body substances. Without stomach acid, we can’t digest and absorb proteins, minerals and vitamins, which are critical for the building and repair of our tissues, bone, muscles and immune system. It also provides the nutrients needed for our mental health and memory.

Love Your AcidWe are all learning about acid and base and pH. Remember pH (potential of hydrogen) runs from zero, very acidic to 14, very alkaline. pH of seven is neutral, and the blood is maintained at a pH of 7.35. Stomach acid runs from one to two pH. The body works very hard to produce this much acid. I call it the queen of body chemistry. When we get symptoms of stomach acidity, it has many causes. One is that the stomach lining has goblet cells, which make mucous to coat the stomach. If the autonomic, automatic nervous system of the body becomes damaged or the hormonal system becomes stressed, particularly the adrenal gland, the stomach becomes abnormal, the goblet cells don’t make adequate mucous and the unpleasant symptoms begin to bother us. In extreme cases, ulcers can develop, which can bleed and leak stomach contents into the abdomen with very serious consequences.

It seems paradoxical that low stomach acid, hypochlorhydria, is extremely common, especially as we age. Gradually introducing stomach acid and pepsin, a hormone that stimulates stomach acid, can eliminate gastritis symptoms. Low thyroid also causes low stomach acid and poor absorption.

Acid BlockersCommercial, over-the-counter acid blockers can frequently contain aluminum, which is a neural toxin and can cause high blood pressure, diabetes and Alzheimer’s disease. We love our alkalinizing products that are, what I call, sexy German baking soda, sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium bicarbonate rather than just sodium bicarbonate. Taken on top of a meal, however, they can kill your stomach acid and ruin absorption. Prescription acid blockers may be necessary for a short period of time in severely stressed individuals, but were never designed to be taken chronically as they cause osteoporosis, thinning of the bones, because of interference with calcium absorption. Pneumonia, serious diarrhea, iron and B12 deficiency and other medical conditions can be consequences of long-term use of acid blockers.

Slippery Elm, Herbs, HomeopathicsA great gift to stomach health is Slippery Elm powder. Given by capsule, four to six before meals and bed, or six capsules opened into warm water, stirring out the lumps, will coat the stomach and esophagus and relieve distress within 30 seconds to five minutes.

Many herbs, demulcents and mints are immediately soothing to the stomach. Peppermint and Peppermint oil are antispasmodic and immediately soothing, as is Chamomile. One combination of herbal tinctures from Nestmann in Germany has been extremely successful in normalizing the autonomic nervous system concerning digestion. It is made from Absinthium (wormwood), Centaury, Blessed thistle, Peppermint leaf, Anise fruit, Juniper fruit, Fennel fruit, Elecampane root, Sage leaf and Hyssop. With the Slippery elm and sexy baking soda, it relieves most gastritis in minutes.

Homeopathy, which is difficult to comprehend at first, gives

poisons that initially would cause stomach pain, but when diluted thousands of times cause the opposite reaction. Nux Vomica, the vomit nut, is one common remedy for heartburn, as is Arsenicum Album, white arsenic, which is also very valuable. There are hundreds of homeopathic remedies for gastritis depending on the symptoms and the nature of the person.

Neural Therapy for Tougher, Chronic GastritisNeural therapy from Germany has been around for over 100 years and treats a myriad of conditions using procaine, a safe local anesthetic. By injecting little bubbles in the skin over the stomach area, with other anti-spasmodic homeopathics, it helps to restore damaged nerves that have been chronically inflamed back to normal function. Thus relieving stomach and esophageal pain in minutes.

awareness in return. The injury that ends one career opens the door to another. The wound of a loved one’s death can help you find the voice and wisdom of that person in yourself. And some wounds cut so deeply and painfully they carve a hole that only God can fill.

Wounds are mysterious. They steal and they give. They hurt to help you live. The false self never dies without wounds.

There is an old apple tree outside my office. Each spring she wears a dress of fragrant white blossoms. This spring, she is also giving shelter to a family of blackbirds nesting in her trunk. I watch the parents pop in and out of the cavity, bringing food to their young. The hole, the wound of a broken branch, has been there for years. Although the trunk is hollow, the tree remains strong and healthy. She teaches us that through a wound comes new life.

No one goes through life without acquiring some wounds. Your wounds may be physical, emotional, or psychological. Wounds hurt and wounds can weaken. They can make you susceptible to further illness. But wounds can also be very positive. With the proper perspective, your wounds can become a source of growth, healing and deepened awareness.

A wound is like the plow that cuts the soil, yet also prepares the field for planting. Into our wounds, life sews seeds of compassion, empathy and understanding. If we nourish and cultivate these gifts we become an instrument of healing. Suffering opens our heart to the suffering of others. Through our own struggles we begin to understand the complexity of other people’s lives. Strangers become brothers and sisters and life acquires more meaning.

IIWounds are paradoxical. They harm and they heal. They kill and they reveal. No one truly lives without wounds.

When you’re first involved in a auto accident, have a fall, or some type of injury, you sometimes don’t feel a lot of symptoms initially. This is due to the adrenalin flow in the body, or the changes in the tissues. That’s why most people think, “that didn’t hurt that much.” Or DID IT?. You could be missing some very important tissue changes that are going on in your body that sometimes don’t have much pain or bad symptoms associated with them at first. Like in the case of whiplash, symptoms can appear immediately, or can develop over the next few days, weeks, or even months after the accident. When your neck is forced to move past its normal range of motion, this is called “Whiplash.” This

unnatural and forceful movement affects the muscles and ligaments in the neck, stretching and potentially tearing them. The discs between the vertebrae can bulge, tear, or rupture, and vertebrae can be forced out of their normal position, reducing your range of motion. The spinal cord and nerve roots can get stretched, irritated, and “choked.”

Some of the most common symptoms associated with whiplash or neck injuries are neck and upper back pain, shoulder or arm pain, headaches, dizziness, vision disturbances, numbness and/or tingling in arms or face, stiffness and tenderness, and low back pain.

That Didn’t Hurt That Much!Submitted By Tony Jensen

Page 21: October 2013 HB Magazine

21 October 2013 Life’s a journey. Make it a healthy one.® Visit www.HBmag.com

According to Dr. Michelle Bean, D.C., “ironically, the same mechanism that creates whiplash in less than 0.005 seconds, can be created at zero miles per hour (mph), over a prolonged period of time. Whiplash at zero mph is a result of poor posture. When we slump while seated, it causes our shoulders to roll forward and the mid-back to round out, the head and neck are pushed forward. In an attempt to maintain balance we automatically extend the head back even further causing that abnormal S-shaped curve of the neck as seen in sudden whiplash. Only now, we maintain this posture hours on end, day after day. Over time, this will result in muscle lengthening adaptations and altered normal biomechanics. The body continues to compensate by restricting motion of injured muscles and joints. All these changes cause secondary myofascial pain, which leads to referred pain, typically in the neck, shoulders, and between the shoulder blades. Initially, most people will experience this as that stress or tension in the neck and shoulders that we all know too well. However, it’s important to remember that this tension is usually a secondary symptom at this point. The main cause is an alteration in posture, creating adhesions around the joints of the spine.”

So, we can see that poor posture can slowly create changes over time. Whiplash, falls and other types of injuries all affect the tissues as well. If these changes are not addressed, the body will try and make changes to decrease the irritation or problem as much as it can, because it doesn’t like being in discomfort. Then, if those abnormal adaptations are ignored, over time, the body could be set up to have earlier than normal degenerative problems, as well as arthritis and chronic pain symptoms. It is, unfortunately, a common story. A person goes in to see a chiropractor months (to years) after an injury they felt didn’t do much damage to them, but are now having problems. The chiropractor takes in their history, performs an exam, takes x-rays, and then sees early stages of degeneration due to the old injury. The patient is then treated with proper protocol of adjustments, specific home exercises to assist with the tissue changes, and home traction to restore the neck curve if needed. In most cases, the patient is brought back to a state of pre-injury and normal health.

There are more descriptive words for fear in the English language than any other emotion. From Acrophobia (fear of heights) to Zoophobia (fear of animals), many of us carry either real or imagined fears throughout our lives. If we can transform or process those fears, we can be free to move on, to achieve what we want, and to become fully actualized human beings.

What follows is a little exercise you can use to not only identify some hidden fears, but to transform them. The first thing is to

ask yourself the question, “What do I fear?” When answering the question, include physical fears (spiders, snakes, whatever) as well as emotional fears (fear of being alone, fear of being rejected, etc). Write down as many of those fears as you possibly can. Don’t stop till you’re completely dry.

Now look at that list. Do you see a common theme? If your greatest fear is not being in control, it may be that a great many of the fears on your list are simply manifestations of that one fear, afraid of losing control. Now see if you can

rearrange the list so you can get a couple of themes that encompass all the things you’ve written down.

For the second part of this exercise, ask yourself, “How does this fear manifest in my life?” For example, if every time you feel afraid or anxious you ridicule someone, then you can see that when you’re feeling afraid your signature behavior is to put someone else down (make fun of them, try to make them uncomfortable, get extremely judgmental or crabby, etc). So, it makes sense that if you understand what behavioral pattern you exhibit when you’re in fear, you’ll be able to know when you’re feeling an inner or hidden fear; otherwise you may not ever become consciously aware of when you’re reacting from fear and therefore will not be able to do anything to change it.

One way to discover the real fear is to watch your emotions. However, many times the real emotions are masked by “already decided-upon opinions.” If you don’t like someone and you run into them, and they say something that upsets you, the hidden fear you feel around them is masked by anger and by your reassurance that you have a real reason to dislike that person. An easy way to get around this is to write down, at the end of the day, any behaviors you engaged in that were uncomfortable, didn’t serve you or were painful--any behavior you engaged in that didn’t feel clean.

As you write this list, you might realize that at the time of certain encounters, you felt fear. As you identify patterns, you can catch yourself in your behavior of that pattern and stop it right in its tracks. That’s how you rewire. So, how do you stop it in the moment? One way to do this is the Shock Value technique. Stop the dialogue with that person, take a deep breath and excuse yourself. This Shock Value technique involves doing something that is so unusual for you that it will cause your subconscious, which normally just runs a tape loop creating the same old behavior, to stop and say, “Wait a minute. What’s going on here?” Now you’ve got your subconscious minds’ attention, so you can communicate with it. If you’ve gone to the bathroom, removed your sock and shoe from one foot, put your foot in the sink and turned on the faucet, that’s going to get the attention of your subconscious mind. Now’s your chance to repeat over and over, “I no longer choose to take out my fear on other people. I take total responsibility for any fear in my life.” Mean it. Feel it emotionally while you’re doing this strange behavior. Your subconscious is going to start canceling the old behavior and will begin to rewire. In the future, when you see that person, your reaction will not be to attack them. Your fear will be lessened or will have disappeared, so you won’t feel the need to protect yourself.

If you don’t like the foot-in-the-sink idea, come up with your own. There are hundreds of behaviors you could use to shock your subconscious minds’ programmed ideas of how

you should react to certain stimuli.

The third part of this exercise is called, “Personify your fear.” This is completely different from the above but it does depend upon the work you’ve done in the first two parts. This third exercise will be published in next month’s Healthy Beginnings. Be aware that most of the dysfunctional behavior we see in ourselves and others is based in fear. We’re very creative regarding our fears. But, as we process and transmute these fears, we learn more about ourselves, we free ourselves and we allow our personal power to soar. Then and only then do we realize the extraordinary potential of who we can become. Stay tuned.

NURTURE

Introducing solid food into your baby’s diet is the beginning of so many exciting adventures with your child. Their discovery of different flavors and textures, colors, aromas, even temperatures of food, is a joy to watch. Our family is at the beginning of this journey. We have just started making our own baby food for our 6-month-old son. I can already see many advantages to making my own instead of purchasing store bought products.

Certainly the cost of making my own is less than purchasing food by the jar. I can make one apple or one sweet potato stretch for a weeks worth of food, and I don’t have to deal with washing and recycling/repurposing jars. My kitchen can only hold so many repurposed jars...but that’s another story. Many of the foods I am using to make his food, such as peas, carrots, beets, squash, cauliflower, tomatoes, eggplant and beans, have come out of our garden. I know the ingredients that are going in my

son’s food have not been grown with pesticides and have been handled and cleaned safely.

Eating food that was freshly prepared gives my son more vitamins, minerals and enzymes that the food is designed to give him in the first place. I have also been making it a point to show him food in its whole form, and to include him when I harvest food from the garden. I want him to understand that food comes from the earth, and to appreciate all the miraculous intricacies of that process. I talk to him about our food. From the time he was a tiny baby I would show him fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices. I would let him smell them; sometimes feel them with his hands. When he got to be around four months old, I let him taste certain foods I was eating, such as apples, pears and avocados. Recently, I introduced cooked peas and yams, and plan on introducing more green and orange vegetables and a little bit of fruit. I want

to include a green food into at least two of his meals, and for him to see me eating and enjoying green foods as well.

In his book “Feeding Baby Green,” Dr Alan Greene talks about the period of four to nine months being an excellent window for nurturing baby’s love of green foods. This is a time when babies are taking in a lot of information about their world by putting things in their months. As they get older and start walking, they go through a stage where they are reluctant to try unfamiliar foods. This is thought to be a survival mechanism that would prevent newly walking children from accidentally eating poisonous foods, when humans still lived in the forests. By including green foods in baby’s diet from the beginning, as well as a balance of other vegetables, fruits, whole grains and proteins, we are able to nurture healthy eating habits. When greens and other fresh foods are familiar to a child from the very beginning, they are less likely to shun these foods in later years. It’s an interesting read that covers pregnancy through pre-adolescence of your child, and has some great recipes. I highly recommend it. I’ve also included a great homemade baby food recipe book in the references.

Many safety concerns are brought up when it comes to introducing solid foods to your baby. The first is allergies. Signs of allergy include spitting up, diarrhea, constipation, blood in stool, irritability or skin rashes. Eliminate any suspected foods and discuss it with your doctor before re-introducing this food. Honey should not be given before the baby is at least a year old. Some people even wait two years to prevent infant botulism. Raw or undercooked meat or eggs should not be given, and raw or undercooked produce unless, like a banana, it is peeled before it is eaten. Foods that are choking hazards, such as raisins, whole grapes, popcorn, peanut butter, nuts, meats or any other foods that are not pureed and require too much chewing. Even as baby’s teeth come in, these foods need to stay soft.

There are also some safety precautions to keep in mind in the kitchen. Always start with a clean work surface and utensils. Food can be stored in the freezer, and it is recommended that it be used within a month. The food can be reheated one time, and should always be removed from the container with a clean spoon. Containers that have been eaten from may not be stored and reused. Finally, be sure the water you are adding to baby’s food has been tested for any heavy metals or nitrates, if that is a concern in your area.

I have been using the Beaba Babycook, which is both a food processor and a steamer. It works great for reheating frozen meals, even in very small quantities. I was also gifted a baby bullet, which comes with great BPA-free storage containers, and has a grain mill setting so you can make your own cereals with whole grains. You can also use many kitchen utensils that may already be in your kitchen, such as a vegetable steamer, food processor/blender, and ice-cube trays (for storage). So far we are having a lot of fun introducing the cycle that food travels from garden to table to our son. I’m sure we have many exciting adventures ahead of us as he continues his discovery.

make it so! He calls this “Deliberate Practice.”

If you want to rally master something, it’s going to require your willingness to push past your comfort zone, coping with frustration and struggle, and allowing for setbacks and failures. Masters know this, which is why Masters are always practicing. If you are doing what you love, then something such as commitment to excellence might be a reality; however, if you are merely doing what you like, then mastery may elude you.

How committed are you?

I’ve found, in my work with coaching clients (especially surrounding “their calling”) that it’s possible to build any given skill or capacity in the same systematic way. Honor your values above all else, only do what you love, do the work that is yours

SPIRITUALHEALTH

How to accomplish mastery in doing what you love to do

I believe we are all called to be “masters” at something. We all know of people who “do what they love” for a living and they seem to do it masterfully. Others work at a job that allows them to “do what they love” as a hobby or sport. Whether you do it for a living, or just for the love of the game, success or mastery require that you approach it as master would.

Malcolm Gladwell suggests that mastery only comes after you have already dedicated 10,000 hours to the thing you love. Anders Ericsson, who is recognized as one of the world’s leading researchers into high performance, makes the case that it’s not inherited talent that determines how good we become at something, but rather how hard we are willing to work to

Written By Rev. Jack Elliott

If you Love it – Then Do it!

to do and believe that mastery will follow. As Aristotle pointed out, “We are what we repeatedly do.” Here are my seven steps to living a purposeful life, and mastering what you love.

1. Honor your values. Know them. Honor them, and never take on any job, hobby or practice that doesn’t reflect your values.

2. Pursue what you love. If you do what you love, you will have unlimited passion to do what it takes to be successful.

3. First things first! It’s natural to want to do the easy things, we all move instinctively toward pleasure; however the Masters use “delayed gratification” as a motivator, and they take on the difficult work of practicing in the morning, before

they do anything else. That’s when most of us have the most energy and the fewest distractions. I love working with my coaching clients, but I find I am more attentive and a better coach if I have handled all my emails, phone calls and office tasks early in the morning, and then I get to spend the rest of my day doing what I love.

4. Practice intensely for a limited amount of time. Just be focused! It’s suggested that practice periods of no longer than 90 minutes are optimum. Ninety minutes is about the maximum amount of time anyone can maintain a high level of focus to any given activity. The evidence is equally strong that great performers practice no more than 4.5 hours a day with a significant break every 90 minutes.

5. Renew Your Mind, Body and Spirit. After you’ve been focusing for hours on your practice, do something nurturing immediately following such an intense effort. Meditation is an ideal transition. During meditation your right hemisphere becomes more dominant, which can lead to creative breakthroughs, or for you to “hear” a Divinely inspired message to come through.

6. Seek limited guidance. The simpler and more precise the feedback, the more equipped you are to make adjustments to your game, or to accept a new idea. Too much feedback, too continuously, however, can created cognitive overload, increase your anxiety, and lead to you become distracted or confused. Remember, only seek feedback from someone aligned with your values.

7. Ritual practice. Will and discipline are wildly overrated. Researchers agree that none of us have very much will and discipline. But there is hope. Those same researchers say the best way to ensure you’ll take on a difficult task is to make a ritual out of it. It is suggested that you build specific, inviolable times at which you do your thing. This way, over time, you do it without having to squander energy thinking about when to do what--that’s deliberate practice! I have a client who is a pro bowler. He travels all over the country playing in tournaments nearly every weekend. He loves his life and his profession. But what does he do on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays? Practice! At least for 90 minutes every day, before he does anything else. What does he do right before a tournament? Practice for 90 minutes.

Follow these simple steps and you will see dramatic results in either your game or work performance.

The essential oil is used in aromatherapy where stimulation and warming are called for, especially in relation to digestive problems. Topical application of clove oil, diluted with a carrier oil over the stomach and abdomen, are said to warm the digestive tracts. Clove oil is used as a painkiller to relieve toothaches, and is still used by dentists as a topical anesthetic. As always, consult a trusted health practitioner who is well versed in herbs before working with this or any herbal remedy.

Below is a recipe for some old-timey air freshener that features cloves, known as a pomander. It has been used since ancient times to freshen stale rooms, ward off disease and repel moths.

Materials:

1 medium size orange (1 apple, lemon, or lime can also be used)2 ounces whole clove buds Orris root powder

Press the pointy ends of the cloves into the orange until it is completely covered. If you like, you can roll the pomander in other aromatic powdered spices such as cinnamon and ginger to give it additional aroma. Dust with Orris root powder, which acts as a fixative, and then set in a dark airy spot for at least four weeks to dry. Then, the pomander can be decorated with ribbon, strung on thread and hung, or displayed in glass bowls. Enjoy!

HERBS&SPICES

Syzygium aromaticum is a dense evergreen, affectionately nicknamed “Zanzibar Red Head,” better known as the Clove tree. Growing up to 65 feet in height, the tree’s cream-colored flower heads turn red when the stamens drop before becoming purple berries. The spice clove comes from the unopened flower buds, which are picked twice a year and sun-dried. They are native to the Maluku islands in Indonesia, where clove is still cultivated. It is harvested in India, Madagascar, Zanzibar, Pakistan and Sri Lanka as well. Clove is partial to tropical maritime climates.

Clove’s strong, spicy flavor is used in both savory and sweet recipes. The buds can be used either whole or ground. Generally, whole buds are removed from food before serving. Cloves compliment beets, green beans, carrots, squash, split pea soup, fruit compotes, rhubarb, prunes, cranberries, pickling brines, strong meat stews, cakes, puddings, marinades, spiced teas and mulled beverages. Cloves are prominent in the cuisines of Russia, Greece, India and China. They are also used in many regions of Africa and the Middle East.

In Mexican cuisine, cloves are known as “clavos de olor,” and are often combined with cumin and cinnamon. Cloves pair well with allspice, vanilla, red wine, basil, onion, citrus peel, star anise and peppercorns.

The use of cloves can be found in Indian Ayurvedic Medicine, Chinese Medicine and Western Herbalism. They are used as a carminative, which reduces gas by increasing the hydrochloric acid in the stomach. It improves peristalsis, the wave contraction and relaxation of smooth muscles, which propels contents through the digestive tract.

In Chinese medicine cloves are known as ding xiang, and are considered acrid, warm and aromatic. They enter the kidney, spleen and stomach meridians and are used to direct the chi downward, warm the middle, treat hiccough and fortify kidney yang. It is used in formulas for impotence and digestive troubles that stem from coldness in the stomach, such as diarrhea.

Maybe we can use some sort of judo on weeds, and use their own strength against them. Perhaps instead of pulling them, we should cultivate them. We could grow creeping Jenny on trellises, instead of morning glories. We could plant purple thistles everywhere, and create a market for floral arrangements that include them.

At the very least, we could be more relaxed about edible weed, and if not encouraging them exactly, be less adamant about discouraging them. I’ve heard it said that vinegar is an excellent organic herbicide. I am sure it would be most effective combined with a good grade of olive oil, some garlic, and a few of your favorite herbs.

When Teresa Howell is not thinking of ways to get out of actual work, she teaches English at Great Basin College.

I’ve been spending the summer in Montana, riding the grubline with various relatives. The cooking is always good at my sister Connie’s, and I’ve been staying there most of the time. I like to help out if it isn’t too much trouble, so one afternoon, I volunteered to make a salad.

We were out of lettuce, and I mentioned a trip to the grocery store.

“Let’s weed the flowerbed first,” Connie said.

I was both puzzled and hungry, but I figured if it would get us any closer to supper, I’d do some weeding. To my surprise, Connie put some of the weeds in a colander. We washed them up, and served them with a garlic vinaigrette.

Connie says you can eat anything with enough garlic; she’s right.

The “weeds” turned out to be lamb’s quarter and purslane. Both are found throughout the West, although lamb’s quarter is quite a bit more common.

Lamb’s quarter can grow to two feet tall, and has triangular, somewhat toothed leaves. You will know it by the dusting of white, sometimes pinkish, frost on the topmost leaves. If you’ve done much hand-weeding, you’ve pulled lots of it. If the weeds were in your vegetable garden, you probably threw some of the best nutrition on the compost pile. Lamb’s quarter is high in vitamins A and C, and contains traces of many other nutrients, including omega 3.

Lamb’s quarter has a somewhat wild taste, which can be masked with some of that garlic vinaigrette. Like most greens, the younger, the better tasting.

Purslane grows low, with long tendrils meeting at a central root. The dark green oval leaves are succulent. It is a member of the portulacacaea family, related to the moss rose. The taste is slightly salty and sour. It’s used quite widely in the Mideast and many other countries. The crunch is welcome in salads, but the structure holds up in stir-fries and soups as well. It is another nutrition powerhouse.

Edible or not, weeds have a complex relationship with humans. They thrive despite our best efforts to eradicate them. Wherever humans are, there are weeds. It’s a fairly safe bet that wherever humans are not, weeds are not either.

Weeds don’t easily gain a foothold in a healthy, undisturbed habitat. Established native plants can usually out-compete them. But once native plants are removed and the soil is disturbed, opportunistic weeds grow far more aggressively than the plants we humans tend.

Halloween season is approaching, and while you’re planning costumes for either yourself or your little ones, keep in mind that not all Halloween makeup contains safe ingredients. The FDA issued warnings in the past that parents should be aware that Halloween face paints are something their agency has very limited jurisdiction over, and cannot guarantee their safety. Some products contain mercury and

lead, and can cause allergic reactions as well. There are countless health hazards from exposure to the toxic heavy metals mentioned above, when applied to the skin. Lead is a proven neurotoxin linked to learning, language and behavioral problems. It has also been linked to reduced fertility, miscarriage and hormonal imbalances. Mercury is linked to toxicity of the nervous system as well as the

If you are unsure of how your skin will react to a product, you can try a patch test in which you wait 24 hours to make sure there is no reaction before applying to a larger area of skin.

reproductive, immune and respiratory systems.

At the bottom of this article, I listed a few alternative resources for Halloween face paints, by makers who are committed to using clean, non-toxic ingredients. Some other guidelines are as follows:

Don’t use products with fluorescent colors, such as D&C Orange No. 5., No. 10, and No. 11; D&C Red No. 21, No. 22, No. 27. and 28, and D&C Yellow No. 7. Luminescent (glow in the dark) colors should also be avoided. If you choose to use products with these ingredients, avoid the eye area. The FDA lists coloring agents approved for use in

cosmetics. If you see an ingredient that is not on this list, avoid using that product.

Smell the product; if it smells bad, don’t put it on your skin. Avoid using older products, many thrift stores offer old make up for sale that has not been opened, but sometimes these products have been recalled, without the thrift store’s knowledge. A recall notice from the FDA in 2009 reads:

“The Food and Drug Administration is advising consumers to stop using certain cosmetic ‘Face Paint’ items labeled as distributed by Oriental Trading Co., Omaha, Neb., due to adverse event reports of skin reactions in children. These items were distributed nationwide.

The FDA learned about a cluster of adverse events in children exposed to various colors of the face paint. All exposures occurred on the same day at an organized event and included rashes, itchiness, burning sensation and swelling, where the face paints were applied. Significant microbial contamination was indicated in most of the products in testing by an FDA laboratory.”

kind of stuff. Another big time-waster can be friends; a lot of teenagers are blinded when it comes to friends.

Usually, they don’t know how much time they really spend with them; not that spending time with your friends is a bad thing, it’s just that you have to make sure your homework is finished and you have time with your family, because in the end, family comes first--against all!

Hearing this message, it really made me think about how I manage my time. I play soccer and that takes up a lot of time, and I realized that I needed to start focusing on getting my homework done before practice, or getting it done at school if I was given time, instead of talking to my friends. I needed to start getting things done instead of watching a movie at night. I needed to fix a lot of things. But in return, I would feel much better, and I might just end up actually gaining more free time on the weekends--not having to worry about homework or anything else. Our Pastor’s message made a big impact on my life, and I hope you might think about it too, because it can make a big change in your busy schedule! Have a great month of October and happy Halloween!

KIDSCORNER

Happy October! First of all, everyone is in school now, and with the school year finally here, busy schedules are starting for most of you. I don’t know about you, but I already have soccer practice every week, and games just starting every weekend now! Not to mention, homework piling up, and friends wanting to hang out every weekend; it’s a lot of things to juggle. I have started to feel very stressed lately, and I didn’t really know how bad it was until I went to church one day, and the subject in church was about doing too many things, and forgetting what’s really important.

I go to church every Sunday, and sometimes I feel a strong connection to the message, and sometimes I don’t. But this last Sunday was all about managing time, and about teenagers not being very good at it. Our Pastor talked about how most teenagers really focus on stuff that doesn’t really mean anything, or won’t mean anything in a few years. For example, how many of you have an Instagram account? Or twitter? Snapchat? What about Vine? All these things that matter to us, really aren’t as important as we think. Years from now, we will be going off to college and not even thinking about that kind of stuff. But one thing that you will remember is how you wasted your time worrying about that

Information about the Law of Attraction has been around since 1987, when Esther and Jerry Hicks began publishing their channeled information. Then in 2006 a movie--produced by Rhonda Byrne--titled The Secret appeared on the scene and went viral. The popularity was so global that Rhonda soon wrote a book with the same title. Since then, dozens of books have been published that try to explain how this Law of Attraction works or how it can work for you. Most are just a reprise of the original information from Esther and Jerry Hicks.

However, this little book is different. It gives you nine experiments, with easy-to-understand directions, which will prove to you that you do create your own reality, no matter how much programming you’ve received that says you don’t.

Millions of people have seen the movie The Secret, or read the book and played around with trying to change their thoughts and expectations. But, old beliefs die hard. Way down deep most didn’t actually believe that they create their own reality. That belief became a self-fulfilling prophecy, so sure enough, it didn’t “work” for them.

The simple experiments in this book are scientifically supported and the ideas are credible. By doing these experiments, you‘ll prove to yourself that you do create your own reality. The author is funny and creative. Some of her chapter titles are The Dude Abides Principle, The Alby Einstein Principle, The Superhero Principle, The Jenny Craig Principle and The 101 Dalmatians Principle. She explains how to prove to yourself that, “There is an invisible energy force, a field of infinite possibilities” that you can learn how to use. You’ll also prove to yourself that despite all appearances to the contrary, humans are not matter, but instead are continually moving waves of energy. You’ll also prove that your thoughts

and consciousness impact matter; also that your thoughts about yourself and your food are in a constant dance with your cells and provide the scaffolding for your physical body. You’ll find that the universe is limitless, abundant and strangely accommodating.

Each experiment takes 48 hours. You set it in place with some simple tools, along with your ability to focus and observe and then you let it go. Nothing could be simpler. The purpose of this book is to help you with your belief system. How would your life change if you could really, deep down, believe that you create your own reality? You’d have to let go of some old programming, some old ideas that you’ve been fed that may be holding you back. You’d have to open your mind and try these experiments with an attitude of scientific neutrality, rather than pessimism.

There’s a reason that science uses the double blind and sometimes triple blind processes when doing experiments, especially physicists trying to work with pure energy. They know that the thoughts, attitudes and belief systems of the person who sets up the experiment will affect the outcome. So they ask someone who knows nothing about what the experiment is supposed to prove, to set it up. By being neutral in both thoughts and expectations that person cannot affect the experiment.

This author knows we’re already pessimistic. Most of us believe that we don’t create our own reality, and that things happen TO us. These are baby-step home experiments that can be done by anyone. So you can be neutral, just like in a laboratory. You don’t have to be wildly enthusiastic nor morbidly pessimistic. Just be neutral about it and see what happens. Let the universe prove to you that you ARE a powerful being. As Mark Twain said, “It aint’ what you don’t know that gets you into trouble, it’s what you know for sure that just ain’t so.”
