Organic, GMO, Right to Know… “No matter how you feel about genetic engineering, the odds are good you agree we have a right to know what’s in our food. Surveys regularly show that over 90% of Americans think genetically engineered foods should be labeled. Over sixty countries around the world now protect their citizens with laws requiring labeling of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and their byproducts. Some have banned GMOs outright. In the US and Canada, no such regulations exist, but with over 30 states now working to require GMO labeling, and thousands of Non-GMO Project Verified products on the market, defending our right to know what’s in our food—and making reliable non-GMO choices—is both easier and more important than ever.”1 Currently, organic USDA federal standards prohibit the use of GMOs. According to the USDA, “The use of genetic engineering, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs), is prohibited in organic products. This means an organic farmer can’t plant GMO seeds, an organic cow can’t eat GMO alfalfa or corn, and an organic soup producer can’t use any GMO ingredients. To meet the USDA organic regulations, farmers and processors must show they aren’t using GMOs and that they are protecting their products from contact with prohibited substances, such as GMOs, from farm to table.”2

This is great news. Buying organic products is one way we can ensure we are avoiding GMOs; however, consumers continue to have concerns about imported products, even single ingredient products such as fresh and frozen produce. When it comes to packaged and multi-ingredient foods, it becomes even more challenging. While manufactures may do what they can to use only organic or non-GMO ingredients, they have to rely on the integrity of the source of the ingredient they are using. Without third party verification and certification, there is little guarantee to the consumer that the end product is GMO free.Over the past several years, the Right to Know effort has gained significant momentum. Through marches, rallies, petitions, social media, and targeted outreach campaigns, consumers are demanding that the government respect their “right to know” what is in their food by labeling GMOs. In the United States, there are major campaigns underway focused on GMO labeling policies; many states have bills before their legislatures, and in Washington State there will be an initiative on the November 2013 ballot. There are currently 37 states organizing mandatory labeling initiatives. The following states are confirmed to have labeling bills this year:• CONNECTICUT: PASSED June 3, 2013 - Connecticut passes the first GMO labeling law in the country! Connecticut House votes in favor of HB 6527. The final vote was 134-3. (Right to Know CT)• MAINE: PENDING June 13, 2013 – Maine House of Representatives approves LD 718 with a vote of 141 to 4. The Maine Senate voted 35-0 to pass an amended version of the bill.• MARYLAND• NEW HAMPSHIRE: HB-660-FN (co-op community info)• NEW JERSEY: GMO free NJ• NEW YORK• PENNSYLVANIA: GMO free PA (Facebook page)• VERMONT: H. 122 Right to Know GMOs• MINNESOTA: H.F. 850 and S.F. 821 Right to Know MN (Facebook page)For a map and more information state-by-state, visit Right to Know GMO!3

Visit http://is.gd/mandatorylabeling, to see what’s happening in your state, and lend a hand!It can be easy to get lost in the hustle and bustle, so while you’re busy doing all this good, remember to pause occasionally to share a good meal with friends and family. The Non-GMO Project has verified over 10,000 products to its rigorous standard, so you can be sure that the corn in your tortillas, the yogurt in your granola, or the pork in your pork chop is non-GMO. We only vote once a year at the ballot box, but we vote every day with our forks. Choosing Non-GMO Project Verified at the store sends a clear message to manufacturers about what you want in your pantry. Choose products with the Non-GMO Project Verified seal, and support manufacturers that have committed to providing reliable non-GMO choices.
