Be The Church
Be The Church Day is coming. This is an opportunity for QAC to
take their faith to the street. As a community, we set up approxi-
mately ten opportunities to serve the greater Dayton community.
You sign up for the event that interests you the most. Then, we
go out in groups to serve those in need on Sunday, October 27,
2013. (However, events can take place on and around that date)
Due to the fact that we will be serving others in our commu-
nity on Sunday, Mass for that weekend will be Saturday eve-
ning at 5:00 pm on October 26, 2013. Fr. Tom will join us that
evening. There will be NO Mass on Sunday morning .
I need your help. I need ideas and small group leaders. We are
looking for ways to serve our fellow man/woman! Events from
the past have included serving food at St. Vincents, laundry at St.
Vincents, taking brown bag lunches to homeless people on the
street, repairing/painting at someone's house who needs help,
raking leaves for an elderly person, helping at Interfaith Hospital-
ity Network, working in the community gardens in Dayton, en-
tertainment at St. Leonards, assembling cookie ingredient jars for
a service organization, serving a meal at a group home.......and
the list goes on and on......No idea is too big or too small. Okay,
it might be too big but we will tell you that.
If you have an idea please email me to let me know. We can even
just talk about it if you worry it doesn't fit the bill. We will also
need small group leaders who will organize the workers and be
sure they complete the job.
Once we have a list of opportunities, we will have sign ups in the
back of the chapel so you will get your volunteers.
So, get your juices flowing.......who could use our help? Some-
times agencies have limited needs on a Sunday so that is why we
have opened it up to days surrounding the Sunday. We can serve
through an agency, an individual person, or assist another group
already making a difference in Dayton. We could do landscaping
at local schools or clean up at a local park or river bank. An RE
class could choose to do something as a class. A group at church
could choose to go out as a group on this day to do a project to-
gether. The opportunities are endless.
Please call or email with ideas.

Due to the amount of work put into QAC Day, we are a little
behind in the planning. I would like to solidify our ideas by Sun-
day, October 3, 2013. Then we will have two weeks to sign up
before we set out to work.
October 2013 Monthly Saint
Well, I don‘t know about you, but September was a crazy month
for me. I finally got ONE suggestion for a Saint for this article,
but as God would have it, it just was not going to make it into the
Spirit this month. (Blame the spider bite and the five resulting
infections from it. Apparently, I‘m like ―Free Drinks for the
Ladies‘ Night‖ to the spiders.)
So, instead, I found this unique and interesting prayer from Pope
Francis, that he made up as a child. I decided that this month, I
would share this prayer and a few others that I pray often. I hope
you get as much out of them as I do.
Peace and Blessings,
Katie
PS – I still am looking forward to having some suggestions for
Saints. My email is [email protected]. Lots and lots of Irish
Saints coming your way soon….

Seniors’ Corner
Summer 2013 is gone!
Boy do I sound forlorn. Enough of that.
Ruby, Frances and I went up to northern
Wisconsin for most of September. In that
way we will see double the fall foliage,
Wisconsin and Ohio. Of course I hope to bring back some
fish. Being gone most of September I didn't have a chance
to plan anything for October. When I get back I will see if I
can put something together, possible a seniors fish fry.
Looking over my computer table I came across my "Texting
for Seniors" acronym list. Of course you know I can only
give you four at a time. You will be tested on them on Sun-
day.

TO: ALL QAC VETERANS
Following the Final Blessing at the November 10, 2013 Liturgy,
there will be a tribute, by way of an audio/visual presentation to
the men and women of the of Queen of Apostles Community who
are or were Veterans of the Armed Services. If you wish to be in-
cluded, please send me your picture in uniform (if you have it, or
if not, any other picture) and your rank, by no later than November
1st, so I can scan it into the appropriate Service category. I do not
need the pictures of the 28 Veterans who participated in a special
showing at Si Lounge last year as they have already been incorpo-
rated into the presentation.
Needless to say, our Community is proud of those who have
served our Country. What could be more appropriate than ex-
pressing our gratitude to them on this day before Veterans Day,
November 11, 2013.

Social Justice Calls for
Active Participation
In the Federal Budget
Process
Congress is back from its recess and will be deliberating the budget
as one of the items on its agenda. They will be weighing in on spend-
ing and taxes, just like every household balances their income and
spending and sets priorities.
We have a Christian obligation to be an active advocate for a ―moral
budget‖ as judged in terms of how it impacts the most vulnerable in
our society. Most of us in the Miami Valley Area, particularly those
who work for the Federal Government and in private agencies that
derive their funding from it, have been affected in recent months the
sequestration process. Many of these families have felt the financial
squeeze resulting from furlough days. If we needed a reminder, this
experience should make us sensitive to the plight of vulnerable fami-
lies who are dependent on government programs to keep them afloat.
The budget deliberation cannot be left solely to the politicians. Peo-
ple across the nation need to participate in this conversation that will
determine the future for American children, families and seniors.
That is why it is so important to understand the issues. Sojourners
Faith In Action For Social Justice has developed a guide to help us
understand and reflect on the budget process. The pamphlet can be
viewed at http://sojo.net/sites/default/files/The-Choices-We-Face-
Budget%202012.pdf.
As a part of our ―Be The Church‖ mindset, we urge QAC members to
review this document and contact their representatives about the
budget and urge them, in the words of The U.S. Catholic Bishops, to
―put the poor first in their budget priorities. We look at every budget
proposal from the bottom up – how it treats those Jesus called ‗the
least of these‘ (Matthew 25:45). They do not have powerful lobbies,
but they have the most compelling claim on our consciences and
common resources. The Christian community has an obligation to
help them be heard.‖

The Gathering:
The Possibility of an Open
Hearted Church
On Saturday morning October 19 we will gather at the Wilmington Stroop Library located at 3980 Wilmington Pike, Dayton, OH from 10:00-12:00. This is a follow-up from our last Gathering in May. Those present at that meeting asked for an opportunity to learn more about the controversy between the nuns and the Vatican in order to discern our response. At this gathering we will have several speakers, Louise Lears, SC, Louise Akers, SC and Miguel and Marian Diaz. There will be time for questions and discussion. We are meeting at the li-brary because the Church hierarchy will not allow these sisters to speak on any Catholic property within our diocese. This really does affect all of us as fellow lay members of our Church. If you plan to attend please let me know. The library can accommodate only 50 people.
Thank you.
Blessings,

You Out Did Yourselves!
I want to thank every single person at QAC for the won-
derful QAC Day celebration. I come back often but so
many of the past members haven‘t so what a treat to
have so many of us in the same room. I watched us all
at liturgy and it didn‘t take us any time before we were
clapping to the music and swaying with arms around
each other for Lights of the City. Just like old times. It
was all magical. That‘s the best way I can explain it.
Pure magic! I know that many, many people had a part
in preparing for the day but a special thank you must be
given to Marti Quakenbush, Marilyn Nagel, and Mary
Rice. To all of you, though, I say ―thank you‖ from the
bottom of my heart. It was truly a special day, one we
won‘t forget.

October Spotlight
Religious Education Service Month
Each year the R.E. program participates in a service project for the month of October. We try to pick a Catho-
lic organization that serves others in our community. This year‘s Religious Education Service Project is BOT-
TLES FOR BABIES! During the month of October the R.E. Program is sponsoring a coin collection for
Elizabeth‘s New Life Center (see info below). We will be distributing bottles on October 6th for families to
take home and the return date is October 20th. If you would like to help out, there will be bottles available in
the vestibule. Our goal is to have each child make a connection to how what they are doing directly helps oth-
ers in their community. We are very fortunate to have our ―BE THE CHURCH‖ day happen at the end of the
month. So the children will be doing something the entire month at home and then have the opportunity to go
out into the community and do work out in the community with their families. This is something that is a
wonderful gift that QAC can give to our next generation. You are giving them the gift of showing them, and
leading them to be people who are actively a part of their community. They will grow up to be people who
see social justice, peace, and charity. Thank you!
Established in 1989, Elizabeth‘s New Life Center is a faith-based non-profit agency and a leader
in care for fragile families. Elizabeth‘s New Life Center specializes in positive solutions and sup-
port for unexpected pregnancies, including free pregnancy tests, ultrasound scans, consulting on
pregnancy decisions, parenting education, and material assistance. Headquartered in Southwest
Ohio‘s urban city of Dayton, Elizabeth‘s New Life Center serves fragile families through six
women‘s centers located in four counties, encompassing the Cincinnati-Dayton metro area as well
as rural regions. Our largest center is located in Dayton‘s inner city, where we also operate a pre-
natal care center to offer continuity of care to our low-income pregnant moms. We promote mar-
riage and healthy relationships through our marriage education department, Marriage Works!
Ohio, and prevention of unwed pregnancy by delivering in-school sexual risk-avoidance education
to area middle and high schools. We serve more than 5,000 unique individuals annually through
our women‘s centers and thousands more through our other departments, making Elizabeth‘s New
Life Center one of the largest pregnancy medical centers in the country.

24 Children‘s Liturgy of the Word
On the first day, God created the dog and said, "Sit all day by the door
of your house and bark at anyone who comes in or walks past. For
this, I will give you a life span of twenty years."
The dog said, "That's a long time to be barking. How about only ten
years and I'll give you back the other ten?" And God saw that it was
good.
On the second day, God created the monkey and said, "Entertain peo-
ple, do tricks, and make them laugh. For this, I'll give you a twenty-
year life span."
The monkey said, "Monkey tricks for twenty years? That's a pretty
long time to perform. How about I give you back ten like the dog
did?"
And God, again saw that it was good.
On the third day, God created the cow and said, "You must go into the
field with the farmer all day long and suffer under the sun, have
calves, and give milk to support the farmer's family. For this, I will
give you a life span of sixty years."
The cow said, "That's kind of a tough life you want me to live for sixty
years. How about twenty and I'll give back the other forty?"
And God agreed that it was good.
On the fourth day, God created humans and said, "Eat, sleep, play,
marry, and enjoy your life. For this, I'll give you twenty years."
But the human said, "Only twenty years? Could you possibly give me
my twenty, the forty the cow gave back, the ten the monkey gave
back, and the ten the dog gave back; that makes eighty, okay?"
"Okay," said God, "You asked for it."
So that is why for our first twenty years, we eat, sleep, play, and enjoy
ourselves. For the next forty years, we slave in the sun to support our
family. For the next ten years, we do monkey tricks to entertain the
grandchildren. And for the last ten years, we sit on the front porch and
bark at everyone.

A Thank You to QAC
Dear Queen of Apostles parishoners,
Sometimes words are not adequate to express our
gratitude. I never know how we are going to pay the
bills month-to-month … and then a miracle happens
… we receive an unsolicited donation. We were
overjoyed to receive your check for $400 dollars …
to know that somebody cares about us.
We have had a busy year. Six men and women and
a teenager achieved sustainable faith – measured as
one year of continuous abstinence from drugs and
alcohol. Children were reunited with parents. And
one homeless woman with schizophrenia was
granted SSI Disability support and transitioned to
independent living.
Our community worked with Catholic universities to
produce and distribute eight keynote lectures focused
through the lens of Catholic Social Teaching to
132,651 Catholic thought leaders located in 121
countries. We began hosting In The Rooms – the
world‘s largest and most trafficed collection of 12
Step meeting videoconference rooms. We hosted
AdobeConnect webconference events, to include: a
discussion with Fr. Richard Rohr about his book on
the 12 Steps titled Breathing Underwater and a dis-
cussion with Cardinal Peter Turkson on the the Pon-
tifical Council For Peace & Justice‘s new publica-
tion titled Vocation of the Business Leader. We be-
gan piloting CITVN Newroom for K12 schools with
Holy Names of Jesus School located in the Rodney
King neighborhood of Los Angeles. And we re-
cently finished filming a documentary of the Amici
CPPS … Fathers of the Precious Blood and laicized
priests who left their order to marry. They started a
bi-annual gathering to heal.

without your love and support.
Thank you for helping us stay sober!

one of you are counted among our prayers.
From all of us to all of you: may God‘s peace be

The Three O’Clock Prayer
Prayed by Marianists around the world every day at 3:00pm.
Lord Jesus, we gather in spirit at the foot of the Cross with your
Mother and the disciple whom you loved. We ask your pardon for
our sins which are the cause of your death. We thank you for re-
membering us in the hour of salvation and for giving us Mary as
our Mother.
Holy Virgin, take us under your protection and open us to the ac-
tion of the Holy Spirit.
St. John, obtain for us the grace of taking Mary into our lives, as
you did, and of assisting her in her mission.
May the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit be glorified in all
places through the Immaculate Virgin Mary.
Prayer to St. Jude
Most holy apostle St. Jude Thaddeus, faithful servant and friend to
Jesus, the name of the traitor who delivered your beloved Master
into the hands of the enemies has caused you to be forgotten by
many, but the Church honors and invokes you universally as the
patron of hopeless cases and of things despaired of.
Pray for me who am so needy; make use. I implore you of that
particular privilege accorded to you to bring visible and speedy help
where help is almost despaired.
Come to my assistance in this great need that I may receive the
consolations and succor of heaven in all my necessities, tribulations
and sufferings, particularly (here mention your petition), and that I
may bless God with you and all the elect throughout eternity.
I promise you, O Blessed Jude, to be ever mindful of this great fa-
vor, and I will never cease to honor you as my special and powerful
patron, and to do all in my power to encourage devotion to you.
Amen.
Prayer of St. Gertrude the Great (dictated by Our Lord to release 1,000
souls from purgatory each time it is said)
Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine
Son, Jesus,
in union with the Masses said throughout the world today,
for all the holy Souls in Purgatory,
for sinners everywhere,
for sinners in the Universal Church,
those in my own home and within my family. Amen.
QAC STEWARDSHIP - Listen Every month, I try to

God for inspiration. My
prayer is always answered, and mostly
on the night when it is due. This time
I‘m not going to write a full article, but
instead ask you to pray for the amount of
time it would take you to read one of
these articles. The Stewardship article in
last month‘s Spirit was 166 words long,
so I ask you to pray for 166 seconds.

Eggs & Milk
Some of you may already know that Steve
is a computer programmer - a true geek
through and through. Programmers have a
funny way of looking at things.
One day, his Lisa (not Jack‘s) told him, ―Go
to the store and get a jug of milk. And if
they have eggs, buy a dozen.‖ So, dutifully,
Steve went to the store and did exactly what
he was tasked with. Steve returned with
twelve jugs of milk.
Bewildered by the situation, Lisa asked,
―Why did you buy so much milk?‖
Steve‘s reply? ―They had eggs.‖
Dusk on a Fall Saturday
By Steve Guilfoos
A cacophony of autumnal colors paint the trees
As a smoky haze devours those that have fallen earthward
The late afternoon sun sinks slowly
But majestically on the western horizon
While the burnt orange of the harvest moon
Shines more brightly in the eastern sky
The best damn band in the land marched fervently
And the tuba dotted the ―i‖ one more time
Hoarse fans honored our uniformed men who battled on the field of play
Knowing they have given their all this very day
The last sweet strains of our Alma Mater faded into silence
Bringing satisfying remembrances of the good times gone by
An unearthly quiet now cloaks the stadium
While the students stumble back to their dorms
Coeds begin primping for their upcoming dates
And fraternity men . . . being true to their traditions . . .
