Brazilian powerhouse Sergio Mendes shotinto ainstream prominence with the Oscar-nominated tune The Look of Love, his versionof Scarborough Fair, and the all-time favoritelove ballad Never Gonna Let You Go.
The Grammy winner energizes the CerritosCenter for the Performing Arts (CCPA) with hisinnovative Jazz-Funk fusion on Friday, Oct. 24,at 8 p.m.. Tickets can be purchased at theCCPA Ticket Office, cerritoscenter.com, or bycalling 562-467-8818.
Called a “superstar Brazilian keyboardistand bandleader and longtime ambassador ofBossa Nova” by the Boston Globe, SergioMendes studied music at the localconservatory as a boy, hoping to become aClassical pianist. He got caught up in the1950s Bossa Nova craze that swept Rio DeJaneiro, Brazil, eventually emerging as one ofthe genre’s pioneers.
By the 1960s, Mendes and his band Brasil’66 had mesmerized Americans withtheir own twist on Samba-basedrhythms.
L.A. Weekly praised Mendes’tunes Mas Que Nada and The Look ofLove, describing them as “classiccalling cards” spiced up with anexotic and edgy energy.
The exciting recipe allowedMendes and the band to mergeold customs with a new beat –“the best of both worlds,” declaredthe magazine.
The Pop-inflected formulasparked worldwide acclaim andexhilaration.
The New York Post hailed:“With his musical curiosity andwillingness to try new things fromBossa Nova to Hip-Hop,”
Mendes “has been able to reach a
younger generation with his music” and“stays true to his musical formula.”
Mendes’ ability to transcend continentalboundaries and age groups has boosted hisstatus in the universal music market, makinghim arguably one of the biggest and best-selling Brazilian performers in the world. Hisinternational appeal generates sold-out toursin venues as varied as stadium arenas to theWhite House, where he performed forPresidents Lyndon B. Johnson and RichardNixon. “Mendes can always be counted on todeliver an engaging set,” said the Los AngelesTimes.
The pianist’s accomplishments are manyand his honors are varied. Mendes garnered a“Best World Music Album” Grammy forBrasileiro, a showcase of Brazil’s Folk andurban tunes that All Music Guide called “agenuine, back-to-Brazil tour de force.”
His Timeless album, Mendes’ firstcollaboration with The Black Eyed Peas’
Will.i.am, featured traditional Jazzstandards that were re-invigorated as Hip-
Hop and neo-Soul songs. Rolling Stonepraised its “beautiful, boundary-breaking
music.”Mendes garnered a Latin
Grammy for his album BomTempo and a “Best OriginalSong” Oscar nomination for Realin Rio from the animated hitmovie Rio.His latest album, Magic, features
collaborations with John Legend,Will.i.am, Soul-R&B singer JanelleMonae, and Brazilian talentsMilton Nascimento and CarlinhosBrown.
