WelcometotheOctobernewsletter.
AsIwritethisattheendofaweekthatbroughtthecoldblooded,senselessandtragickillingoftwoCanadianForcesmembers,IamremindedthathereinCanadaweenjoyahostofprivilegesandaqualityoflifethatissoeasytotakeforgranted.
TherunningdownofWOPatriceVincentandacolleaguewasshockingenough,buttheshootingofCorporalNathanCirilloandthesubsequent“storming”oftheCentreBlockofParliamentleftthecity,provinceandcountry,traumatized.ThetargetingofservingCFmembersissickening:Ihavetheutmostadmirationforhowthepoliceandothersecurityforcesrespondedandeffectivelydealtwithbothsituations.Thankfullytheperpetratorsofbothactsweredealtwithappropriately.
However,I’msurethatwewillseeasignificanttighteningupofsecurityarrangementssurroundinggovernmentandmilitaryestablishments,andIhavenodoubtthattherightsandfreedomswecurrentlyenjoyascitizensandresidentswillbeeroded–justalittle.
ButIfirmlybelievethatCanadawillstandresoluteanddeterminedtorootoutanderadicatetheterroristthreatsthatinitiatedbothevents,toprotectandsustainourculture,freedom,andwayoflife.

Afterthechallengesfacedbylastyear’sevent–postponementfromtheusualOctoberslotbypersistentheavyrain,andthenwhenwefinallygotachancetogetoutonthetrails,therewassnowonthegroundandwehadeightpeopleandthreetruckstakingpart–Iwasabitworriedwhenitcametogettingreadyfortheeventthisyear.
Butmyfearswereunfounded.TerryKhaddoneanexcellentjobpublicizingtheeventandonthedaywehadover25peopleand11trucksinattendance…butIthoughtatonepointthatI’dbepackingpeopleintothe101,asthefirstgroupofattendeesshowedupinroadcars…

On the Trails
Therainhadsubsidedbythetimeweheadedoff:Dominiquecapturedourdeparturefromeventheadquartersonvideo,andledbythe101,werumbledoutalongHenry’strailalongsidetheIndianCreek,whichwefordedbeforeheadingbackupstream,crossingtheborderontomyland,andmakingourwayuptoourtopfield,totheOctoberTrail,which

reallymarkedthestartofthetrailsproper.
TheprolongedperiodofwetweatherhadseededafewsurprisesforusandasIcrossedtheculvertontothestartoftheOctoberTrailIwassurprisedtoseethatwehadlostsomepeople:Turnsoutthatourtopfieldhadbecomesaturated,andthetrackacrossitwasunabletosupporttheconvoy:Liam’sD2becameboggeddownandhadtobetowedfreebyDarren’sLR3.
TheOctoberTrailisalwaysentertaining,andthisyearwasnoexception:Thestartisabittricky,crossingaculvertandenteringanoldloggingtrailwhichhassomeembeddedrocks,butthereisalongstretchabout500metersthatindryweatherisquitesoft,butthisyearitwasalmostkneedeepinwaterwithlotsofmud,chokepoints,andsubmergedobstacles–rocks,andlogs.
The101ploughedthroughtoabouthalfwaybeforegettingwedged–thiscausedafewanxiousmomentsbutaftersomeshuntingandrepositioning,wasabletomakeitthroughtodryland.
KevinandRobinintheDrawingRoommadeitlookeasy,withnodramaorevidentdifficulty–magnificent.
GarthandCaitlinploughedthroughwiththeRRSportwithsimilaraplombandIwasbeginningtothinkthatthingswerealmosttooeasy.
DarrenandtheLR3causedsomeexcitementashisfrontrighttyrewasshreddedasheenteredthetrail,butthetruckthunderedthroughthewatersuccessfullyandonceondrylandKevinandRobinhelpedchangethewheel.
NextcameLiam,andlikethe101hemanagedtogethalfwaythroughthetrenchbeforeboggingdown:Repeatedattemptstofreethetruckonlydugitindeeper–itwasatthispointthatoneofthe“corevalues”oftheOVLRcodeofconductbecameveryevident…“Thoushaltmockandridiculeanymemberwhogetsstuck,totheextentpossible…”
Ittookawhile,buteventuallywegotLiam’sD2free,whichinvolvedsomeinspireduseoftheSedgwick’swinchbyBruce,andthePresidentgettingcoveredinmud,havingstoodinthewrongplacetohelppushtheD2…andprettysoonwewerebackinmotionandheadingalongthetrailknownasSmith’sRoad,enjoyingthelastofthefallcoloursandjustbeingoutinthewoods.
WedetoureddownasidetrailthattookinalongdescentintoTheGully,crossingasmallstreamandthenclimbinguparockstrewnpathwithafewtwistsandturnsandseveralsectionsthattestedtheaxlearticulation,beforeemergingandtheHuntingCamp.Westoppedhereforafewminutes,givingthePresidentanopportunitytoscrapeoffmostofhismud-pack,beforemakingourwaytothehydroline–againwithoutincident.
AtthispointDarrenparkedtheLR3,beingconcernedthatthespacesaversparemightnotholdupifthetrailsgotabitmorechallenging.
TheHydro-lineLoopwascompletedwithoutincidentandwechosetopickupSmith’sRoad,viaareturnrunthroughThe
Gully-thistimeintheoppositedirection.

SowemadeittoSmith’sRoad–expectingtofindLiamandDarrenwaitingforus–buttheywerenotthere,andtherewerenosignsthattheyhadpassedalongbeforeus…wherecouldtheybe?
Turnsoutthatinsteadofturningrighttopickthereturntrackfromthehuntingcamp–theyhadturnedleft,andthenturnedrightwhentheyreachedthehydroline…takingthemintotheunknown…
Darren takes up the story:
“Afterweleftyouforour“easy”trailout,LiamandIturnedrightonthehydrolinesandtookthatallthewaytoBarrSideroad.OneofthethingsIlearntwastoensureifweseparateIknowexactlythewayout!!!Itwasquitethechallengingroute,notbecauseoftheterrainitselfwhichwasprettymildwithsomesandlikeroads,butbecauseofthewatercrossings.Thereweretwomajorones.Thefirstwasprobablydeeperandwasuptothetopofmyheadlightswiththebowwave.Itwasonlyafewcarlengths;thesecondisintheattachedcrappyblackberryphonepicture.Itwasnotquiteasdeep,maybetothebottomofthelights(Liamisnotatthedeepestpartinthephoto)butasyoucanseeitwasquitelong.JustafterItookthepictureLiamdroppedhisrearofthevehicleoffthesideoftheroadintotheditch(whichwasnowverydeep).Nophotosaswehadtoworkquickly.Weputastraponandpulledhimout.Thesecondphotoisthewaterlineonhisdisco.Whenheopenedtherearpassengerdooraftertherecoverywatercomepouringout.Afterthatrecoveryitwasaprettytamefinishbacktoyourhouse.

Dinner
SomeoftheattendeeshadtoleavesoonafterwegotbacktothePavilion,whichwasdoingitsbesttotakeoffinthebriskbreezethathadpickedupintheafternoon:Sowetookafew“Endex”photo’s,packedupthetentandtrailerandheadedindoorsforafabulouschilidinnerpreparedbyDominique.
Thiswasasuperwaytoendtheday,anditwasevidentfromthebiggrinsaroundthetable,thattheeventwasasuccessandeveryonehadreallyenjoyedit.
Formeitwasanabsoluteblast,andmarkedaniceinterludeinaperiodofintenseworkactivity.

The story:“Ihave2LandRoversIwouldliketosellifIcangetareasonableprice,packagedeal,bothmustgo.BothareSeries1,195788’s.Onewaslastrunningabout6-7yearsagowhenitdevelopedafuelpumpleak.IbelieveIgotthepumpfixedbutnevertriedtorunit.BoughtanATVaroundthattime.ThisRoverhasbeeninagarageeversince.Ithasabout41,000milesonthespeedowhichdoesn’twork.Weusedtoputabout5milesayearonitgettingfirewoodandvisitinglocalmines.Itwaslastlicensedin1986.Themotorwasrebuiltintheveryearly80’susingpartsfromthemotorsinbothRovers.Thegastankhasbeenepoxied.Ithasamechanicalwinchonthefront,poweredfromaptoonthemotor.Ithasthe4cylindergasmotorusedin1957.TheotherRoverisbasicallybodypanelandotherpartsetc.thatcouldbeusedformaintenanceorrebuildingtherunningone.Ithasnomotor,butIdohavealltheparts.Myaskingpriceis$2500forboth.”Note from Pete: Looks like it might not be huge job to get one good one going.
