Ebola Virus Disease (EVD)

What is Ebola virus disease (EVD)?Ebola, previously known as Ebola hemorrhagic fever, is a rare and deadly disease caused by infection with an Ebola virus strain. Ebola virus was discovered in 1976 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo near the Ebola River. Since then, outbreaks have appeared sporadically.

What are the symptoms?Symptoms of Ebola include fever (greater than 38.6°C or 101.5°F), severe headache, joint and muscle pain, weakness, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal (stomach) pain, and sometimes hemorrhaging (bleeding or bruising). Symptoms may appear anywhere from 2 to 21 days after exposure to Ebola virus, though 8 to 10 days is most common. When infection occurs, symptoms usually begin abruptly.

How is Ebola transmitted? not limited to urine, saliva, feces, vomit, and semen) of an infected person and exposure to objects that because they come in close contact with the infectious secretions of ill persons they are caring for. The disease can also spread within health care settings (such as a clinic or hospital) when proper precautions and safety protocols are not followed.

How is Ebola diagnosed? occurring diseases, such as malaria. If a person has the early symptoms of Ebola and has had contact ! " ! #

Who is at risk for exposure to Ebola?Healthcare providers caring for Ebola patients and the family and friends in close contact with Ebola patients are at the highest risk of getting sick. Medical professionals in the United States should consult the CDC’s “Infection Prevention and Control Recommendations for Hospitalized Patients with Known or Suspected Ebola Hemorrhagic Fever in U.S. Hospitals”.

How can I protect myself from being infected with Ebola? There is no FDA approved vaccine for Ebola. Health care workers must be able to recognize a case of Ebola and be ready to employ practical contact and droplet precautions. Techniques include the wearing of protective clothing (such as masks, gloves, gowns, and goggles), the use of infection control measures (such as complete equipment sterilization and routine use of disinfectant), and the isolation of Ebola patients from contact with unprotected persons. The aim of all of these techniques is to avoid contact with $ %with the body of the deceased patient be prevented.

Do people with Ebola survive? Healthcare and public health systems in the United States are the best in the world. We expect survival rates for Ebola patients in the U.S. to be higher than what was recently seen in Africa. Supportive care in a hospital setting is crucial for a patient’s recovery.

It is possible that only those who remember what the yard was like before they moved in can appreciate what a transformation Kyle and Stephanie Jensen have made at 1105 Mistletoe Drive. The improvements they have made are a boon to the entire neighborhood.

The home has distinct curb appeal due to the cheery look the Jensens have created. The cozy seating in front of their cottage results in a warm, welcoming look.

Kyle did all the work himself, and building the hardscape structures he has made lends a special quality to the term ‘sweat equity.’ He put in new sidewalks, big natural stone planters framed by matching stone columns. The red tile porch completes the effect of all the hardscape Kyle has done. The planters are currently very full with lush, multi-colored Penta. There is a specimen tree in the

2209 Irwin StreetYard of theMonth

yard that I think is a Pistasche. (I didn’t speak to Kyle or Stephanie because I wanted this to be a surprise.) The beds behind the stone planters have some Abelia and some not-boxy-looking Boxwoods... the best look for Boxwoods is for them to not be trimmed like boxes!

On one side of the front is a sculpted Holly. On the other is a red, variegated Canna Lilly in a nice green pot. The color in the stone planters is seasonal; however, Kyle and Stephanie have always had colorful plantings there ever since Kyle built them.

So not only does Kyle deserve recognition for his selfl ess service in the Mistletoe Heights Neighborhood Association, but he and Stephanie also have earned the Yard of the Month Award for October. His hard work has paid off—both in landscaping and in administration!

The Jensens are moving away so Kyle can be closer to his job. Our neighborhood’s loss will be another neighborhood’s gain! But the Jensens will be missed here in Mistletoe Heights. —Bruce Horn

The mornings are once again becoming crisp and fall is threatening. Before you turn around it will be time for the annual Pumpkin Carving Contest.

The rules for this event are simple: - The night BEFORE Halloween (which

means Sunday the 30th this year) the elite gang of gourd judges hit the street to judge this year’s offerings.

- All real carved pumpkins are judged soon after dusk.

- The grand prize winner will get either an all expense trip to Transylvania or a $50.00 prize (to be decided later).

- all honorable mentions get a fabulous write up in the newsletter.

Plan your gourds’ grimace now .... get the whole family involved and remember judging occurs the night BEFORE Halloween and styrofoam/plastic does not count in the judging.

NEW NEIGHBORS!! I should point out that Trick or Treaters fl ock to Mistletoe Heights from all over town so be prepared to deliver the hospitality and treats. (And keep an eye out for the Mistletoe Halloween Street Band on their annual roam).
