... a people preparing for the coming King

October 2014October 2014October 2014October 2014

I prophesied as he commanded me, and the breath came into them, and they lived and stood on their feet, an exceedingly great army. Ezekiel 37:10

Page 2: October 2014October 2014 - insight.mottramec.co.ukinsight.mottramec.co.uk/Insight2014-10Web.pdf · 2 2 On Thursday 18 th September 2014, 3.6 million Scots went to the polls to vote

On Thursday 18th September 2014, 3.6 million Scots went to the polls to vote on the future of their country. As a result, the 300 year old union between England and Scotland still remains intact, and

the political debate surrounding the referendum has caused us to think again

about who we are as a nation.

A hundred years ago Britannia really did rule the waves. Great Britain boasted the largest

navy in the world, ruled a third of the land

mass on our planet and had been used in extraordinary ways to take the gospel of

Jesus Christ to the nations. Two world wars and (I believe) increasing secularisation has

meant that our nation is nothing like she used to be. The church is weak and in many

ways the glory has gone from our shores. So what lies ahead; is there any hope for our

nation?

What I’ve seen in the last couple of weeks has led me to that God’s not finished with the United Kingdom.

There are no coincidences in God. For the week leading up to the Scottish

independence referendum, the Lord had sent

some 450 South Korean Christians to the UK with the sole intent of praying for our nation.

As churches in Mottram and Hattersley, we had the privilege of hosting one of 30 teams

of Koreans. (see pictures later in Insight). After they’d left us all 30 teams met up in

London and spent the evenings of 15th and 16th September in Westminster crying out in

prayer that God would move again in power

in our nation. I marvelled at the timing that on the eve of one of the greatest decisions

our nation has had to make in the last few hundred years the Lord sent hundreds to

pray for us.

I also marvelled at the intensity of the prayers of our Korean brothers and sisters.

I was at the Westminster meeting on the Monday evening. I heard the Korean pastor

suggest that the platform he was stood on was like an altar. I heard him ask if there

were any Koreans who would be willing to

sacrifice themselves in prayer for the sake of the United Kingdom. I saw the platform fill

up until there was no more room. I saw the aisles fill up as well. Hundreds of Koreans on

their knees, hands raised to heaven crying out fervently that the Lord would move again

in our Isles. That’s why I believe that God has not finished with the UK. I saw

something of God’s heart for our nation

expressed in the prayers of our Korean brothers and sisters. I came away

wondering whether the Koreans loved the UK more than I do.

It’s time for the UK church to pray like we’ve never prayed before so that we too catch God’s heart for our nation. There is hope for the United Kingdom but it

will only come if we rediscover what it means to be a kingdom united in Christ.

In Hattersley we’ve been studying Ezekiel on

Sunday mornings. In Ezekiel chapter 11 God

gives Israel this wonderful promise:

“They shall be my people, And I will be their God.”

That’s also the hope for our nation.

Let’s pray it into being! Jim

The Message

God can’t be silenced.

If we refuse to hear him he will find other ways and other people to get his Word across and his will

done.

S.U. Bible reading notes Gwen Taylor

We shall be trying a pattern of monthly men’s breakfasts and ladies breakfasts in order to strengthen relationships, build up faith and honour God. Where possible, we intend to work to a pattern as follows: Men: 2nd Saturday of the month from 8-10 am Ladies:3rd Saturday of the month from 8-10 am

However, there may be occasional deviations from this pattern, so do look in the diary in Insight and also on the MEC Website to ensure you have the up to date information about these occasions. This month the Mighty Men will breakfast at 8 am on 11th October (but the Ladies miss out due to the Creation Conference on 18th).

One of the responsibilities of church leaders is to “equip the saints for the work of ministry” (Ephesians 4:12), so that the body of Christ may grow and be strengthened! This is done in a variety of ways, including Sunday

messages, small group studies, one-to-one discipleship activities and also planned training sessions.

In the months and years ahead, we are planning to provide a number of opportunities for every person in MEC, HCC and other churches in the area to receive training from people with particular expertise and experience in a range of topics that are relevant to the vision and calling of the church. We aim at providing

about one training session each academic term on some topics that will equip us to advance the Kingdom of God.

I strongly encourage you to make the most of these sessions. Please book them in

your diaries now!

Origins Saturday 18th Oct., MEC, 9.30 am to 6.30 pm

Paul Garner, Dr Arthur Jones, Dr Sylvia Baker, Dr David Tyler Area of Equipping: Apologetics, Biblical Creation

Paul Garner has risen to prominence as a national speaker on matters relating to origins and it is a privilege to have him with us for the Saturday and Sunday of this weekend alongside

Arthur, David and Sylvia who are also very ably equipped to speak on these important matters.

Under the Influence Wednesdays 22nd & 29th Oct, 5th & 12 Nov., MEC, 8.00 pm

Gary Gibbs Area of Equipping: Personal Witness, Evangelism

“Under the Influence” is a four-evening training and equipping event on relational evangelism by Gary Gibbs. Gary is the National Director of REACH, the evangelism and

church planting department of Elim Pentecostal Churches in the UK (and one of MnS’s lecturers at Regents Theological College) and has been active in full-time evangelism/church planting since

1979. Small groups will be postponed for these sessions to allow as many as possible to attend.

Learning to Minister like Jesus Saturday 1st Nov., MEC, 10 am to 4 pm

Martyn Smith Area of Equipping: Personal Ministry

Martyn Smith was formerly an Anglican vicar and then the pastor of Manchester Vineyard Church before leaving to establish the Kingdom Life Academy which

exists to provide training for churches. KLA aims at equipping ordinary church members to grow in skill and confidence in various areas of ministry and

service.

The early church learned how to minister like Jesus did. In Romans 15:17-20 Paul talks about leading people to Christ through what he has said and done, and in the power of the Spirit. It is this combination of compassion, preaching and signs and wonders that had a tremendous impact on growing the kingdom. We

have a huge passion that the church should learn to minister like this - like Jesus did! Topics covered include: Mobilising for Power Ministry, Values for the Healing Ministry, The Ministry of Jesus, Patterns for

Jesus' Ministry, Empowering the Church For Ministry, A Framework for Ministry. Martyn

Life on Earth – Science has all the answers – or has it?

Did God create through the process of evolution? Is it unscientific to believe in God?

Does science disprove the Bible? Is there any evidence for creation?

Did God create in six days? Were people around when dinosaurs walked the earth?

Biblical Creation Ministries is a gospel organisation

working in partnership with local churches. Their goal is to equip and train the church to respond to the challenge of

secular understandings of origins in a theologically and scientifically informed way that maximises our apologetic

impact.

“Proclaiming Biblical truth from Genesis to Revelation”

Paul Garner (MSc, FGS) is a full time researcher and lecturer for Biblical Creation Ministries. He has a masters

degree in geoscience from University College London, where

he specialised in palaeobiology. He is a Fellow of the Geological Society of London and a member of several other

scientific societies. His first book, The New Creationism: Building Scientific Theories on a Biblical Foundation, was

published by Evangelical Press in 2009.

On Sunday 6th July 2014 Anthony from HCC was baptised. He spoke about when he came to faith in Jesus having a “big dark hole” removed from his life and crying because he “realised how much Jesus has actually done for me”. Over the years, we’ve had folk from HCC baptised at MEC but Anthony’s baptism marks a milestone in the life of our church. It was the first ever held at Pinfold; in fact we reckon there’s probably not been any baptism in Hattersley for over 20 years. Please pray for Anthony and for more baptisms in Hattersley!

HCC Baptism With the changing role and location of

Gill Barrett after years of service as

the Pastoral Support Team Co-ordinator, there is a need to

re-define and strengthen the

Pastoral Support Team.

This team provides the first level of pastoral support for people connected with the church, and especially those who are not receiving care within the small group system. The kinds of things that happen with the pastoral support team include the following: • Home visits for the ill and infirm

• Shopping and lifts to medical appointments

• Hospital visits

• Listen and pray with people

• Sharing the Lord’s Supper with people • Assistance with practical needs (eg form-

filling) There is a significant need for this kind of care within the congregation at MEC, and I can only see this need growing as the church increases its influence within the community and grows its “fringe”! One thing is certain, Susan and I will never be able to bear this load and have relied heavily on the time and compassion of the existing team. I wish to honour those who serve, very much out of the public eye, to provide real care to those who would otherwise be isolated by illness and family responsibilities. It is time to strengthen this team. It would be great to have 5 ladies and 5 men who are able to offer some time on a reasonably regular basis (day time or evening) to do the kinds of things identified above. This will need to be co-ordinated through someone who will replace Gill and who is able to meet regularly with Susan and me to make sure that we don’t overlook anyone in need. If you would be interested in serving in this way, please pray about it and please let Liz Benstead know!

We are now recruiting for the 3 peaks challenge and

need willing people to volunteer.

Alan Smith and Simon Davidson have the forms for you to sign up.

Since 1990, more than 113 million boys and girls in over 130 countries have experienced God’s love through the power of simple shoebox gifts from Operation Christmas Child. Samaritan’s Purse works with local churches and ministry partners to deliver the gifts and share the Good News of Jesus Christ. Will you join with us in 2014 to achieve this goal? How to make a Shoebox gift Pick up a leaflet (pictured), download from the web site or see one of the MEC folk involved for details of how to make up your gift. Then make sure it is all ready for around mid November. You may also want to consider helping out in other ways. Either helping check and prepare the boxes for transport or joining one of the van collection crews as they visit schools, churches and other locations to make collections.

Warehouse

The warehouse is likely to be once again at Whitelands Road, Ashton-under-Lyne and will be open from mid November to the start of

November. The exact opening times and dates will vary slightly from day to day and will be available nearer the time. Martyn

Catterall would be more than happy to fill you in with the details.

Vans

The Van Collection crews will start making their trips around the area from the start of November. If you are reasonably fit and can spare a day a week during the campaign, I

would love to hear from you. Suitable for both lads and lasses, it’s a great way to get involved. You’ll work as a team—Margaret loves

getting all the paperwork sorted and chatting to the donors while I and the other crew members do all the heavy lifting (but she will get stuck

in too if needed!).

On Monday 27 October 1967 the Abortion Act was passed in Parliament and received royal assent six months later. In the first full year following the Act (1968) there were 54,819 abortions in England and Wales; in 2013 there were 190,800. It is widely quoted that 1 in 3 women of child-bearing age in UK has had an abortion and over a third of those have had more than one. Abortion has affected most families in some way, as well as the church, and yet the church remains largely silent. The time has come to break the silence in the church, to have an approach that marries truth

with compassion. This would enable those Christians who have been struggling following abortion to be restored and those who get pregnant in difficult circumstances to be supported. Only when the church can lift her head and show God's unconditional love will we begin to make an impact in society.

Prayer is key. Would you please join us in praying and fasting on Monday 27 October for God to move in our church and in our nation on this issue? Pray for the various initiatives there will be over the next twelve months to break the silence in the churches. Pray for image's role in this. If you can, please join us on Monday 27th October at Revival Church, Huddersfield Road, Millbrook, Stalybridge between 7 pm and 8 pm. You can also join us for our next Life Prayer Watch on 9 November, 8-10pm, at the image office (110, Oldham Rd, Manchester) to seek God's face and hear what He is saying.

The Big Night Out

This event is primarily open to the Monday Matinee attendees

and those in our local community. However if you

would like to come along please contact Debs and any

spare tickets will be happily allocated to the church family.

Please pray for a smooth running, safety and lots of fun.

Tintwistle Primary Earlier this year, I was

approached by one of the governors of Tintwistle Primary

School asking if we could host an assembly. Since then

Rivkah and myself have been in twice and had a very

positive response. We are booked in again at the end of

November and would value your prayers in the run up to

this, that we would hear from God what He wants them to

hear and for open hearts from both pupils and teachers.

...And as one door opens...another closes…

Late Lounge—On Ice

At the beginning of September the YPG/Late Lounge Team made the decision to close the Late Lounge doors. We feel it

served its purpose at the point it was opened but we recognised there was little need for it at this time as most of

the regulars are now unable to attend. As we now have the resources, venue and time slot, it would be straightforward to set up should the need arise again to reopen. We appreciate your prayers

over the last 18 months for this work and would ask that you continue to pray for the work of YPG and those involved in leading.

If you would like to join usto pray specifically about the youth work, we would love to see you at

Prayer 4 Youth, the second Sunday of each month at MEC from 4.30 to 5.30 pm Debs

There are 3 separate sessions for safeguarding training all on 12th October .

The basic sessions will take place after church both at HCC

and MEC. It will probably not last more than 15 minutes and will be a quick recap on safeguarding matters.

Anyone involved in ministry to children and vulnerable adults needs to attend, If there are any absolutely new volunteers there will also need to

watch a video with an outline of all safeguarding issues. If anyone needs details of where to find this please let me

know.

The advanced sessions will also be on 12th October at 7pm at MEC. This is for trustees, ministry leaders, anyone

with a position of responsibility and anyone who is simply interested. The evening session will be mainly focussed

around risk assessments following on from last years session and those attending should bring a completed risk

assessment (If they have one).

Everyone should get a personal invite but

if in doubt please contact one of the safeguarding team who are the very

lovely Carol Barlow, Rachel Bowden, Jim Solomon and Simon Davidson.

Master Plan With the help of Liz Benstead, we have developed a monthly Master Plan which details who is doing what, when and where! For example, this plan contains details of who is leading worship, putting out the chairs, leading the Lord’s Supper, overseeing team prayers on a Tuesday and so on. You will find these plans on the back of the kitchen door for two months (the current and the next month). We will do everything we can to keep this up to date, but that will rely very much

on being provided with the information. So if you play any part in devising a rota for some aspect of the ministry of the church, please let Liz in on the secret!! If you wish for information to be included that is not yet on the plan, do let Liz know and where she can find the data.

An Opportunity to Serve We have vacancies on the team projecting the songs on a Sunday morning. It’s just 2 hours per month and no previous experience is necessary as we will train anyone volunteering but it would be helpful if you had some familiarity with the songs and basic keyboard and mouse skills. Come and talk to me if you are interested, or phone 0161 320 5821. Peter Deakin

Another Opportunity to Serve Finance Volunteer (Part-time paid) Tim Tucker has asked if there is anyone interested in helping with finances between the UK and South Africa. 7.5 hours possibly half at home and half at the Message Trust Offices in Sharston. If you are interested please speak to Alan L. Smith who has a Job Description.
