News From Dr. Podhaski

Back to School A recent article in a newspaper stressed the need to slow down and avoid the craziness that accompanies the start of a new school year. They article suggested: · Set up a designated zone and times for home work. (Reading is always a great homework option and is directly related to vocabulary development and overall achievement). · Stick to a standard bedtime. Preschoolers need 11-12 hours of sleep and other elementary-age students need 10 hours of sleep each night. · Prioritize extra-curricular activities. Summer activities often carry over into the school year and the demands of soccer, softball, dance, and football can tax our patience and stamina. · Set designated family time. · Prioritize family meals. · Have everyone in the family help with chores that promote responsibility. · Have less “screen time” on computers, iPads, and phones.

Welcome to the 2017-18 school year. The beginning of a school year is always an exciting time for students, parents, and staff members. Few endeavors in life offer the chance for annual renewal like the school environment. It is a chance of new beginnings, new school clothes, new crayons, new teachers, and new friends. We are looking forward to an exciting, challenging, and rewarding school year. The most successful schools are those in which parents and staff work together. Mountain View is recognized for that kind of teamwork and collaborative spirit. The Assistant Principals and I look forward to working with you and your children this year. Parties/Snacks Traditional holiday parties are an acceptable part of our school curriculum. Winter Holiday, Valentine’s Day, and end of school provide the party themes. We encourage parents to participate in the school parties. Please make arrangements with the teacher prior to coming. Note: Class parties are for the celebra-tion of our students only. Because we want the parents to be able to spend the time with their student in the class, siblings and younger children are not allowed at the parties. If you do not wish for your child to participate in any or all of these parties due to religious reasons, please let your child’s teacher know. We will make arrangements with you to handle the situation so that the best interests of your child are met. If snacks are a normal part of the classroom day, parents may provide store-bought snacks for the students. These snacks must conform to the USDA Smart Snack Guidelines. We are unable to serve snacks that do not meet the guidelines. See The Smart Snack Guidelines in the District section of the hand-book. This policy is subject to change due to state and federal laws. It is the policy of the school that BIRTHDAY PARTIES FOR INDI-VIDUAL STUDENTS ARE NOT ALLOWED AT SCHOOL. Personal invitations to your child’s birthday can be sent home in Tues-day folders as long as every child in the class receives the same invitation to attend. We cannot release personal information of the students to parents to send them home via US Mail. If you would like to bring a snack to celebrate birthdays, please make arrangements with your classroom teacher. These Birthday treats must be delivered by 10:00 AM and will be served after 2:30 PM. When celebrating birthdays, please limit the celebra-tion to store bought treats only (no balloons, decorations, or party favors). Other parent provided snacks must meet the Smart Snack Guidelines.
