Halloween Safety On and Off the Road

Kids love the magic of Halloween: Trick-or-treating, classroom parties and trips to a neighborhood haunted house. But for moms and dads, often there is a fine line between Halloween fun and safety concerns, especially when it comes to road and pedestrian safety. In 2014, about 6,300 pedestrian deaths and 145,000 medically consulted injuries occurred among pedestrians in motor vehicle incidents, according to Injury Facts 2016, the statistical report on unintentional injuries created by the National Safety Council. NSC research reveals the reasons for pe-destrian deaths and injuries varies by age. Darting or running into the road

accounts for about 70% of pedestrian deaths or injuries for those age 5 to 9 and about 47% of incidents for those 10 to 14. In the U.S., October ranks No. 2 in motor vehicle deaths by month. NSC list put August first, with 3,370 deaths, followed by October, 3,200, and September, 3,170.

To help ensure adults and children have a safe holiday, the American Academy of Pediatrics has com-piled a list of Halloween Safety Tips, including do's and don'ts on the trick-or-treat trail:

*A parent or responsible adult should always accompany young children on the neighborhood rounds

*If your older children are going alone, plan and review the route that is acceptable to you *Agree on a specific time when children should return home *Only go to homes with a porch light on and never enter a home or car for a treat

Children and adults are reminded to put electronic devices down, keep heads up and walk, don't run, across the street.

NSC offers the following safety tips for parents – and anyone who plans to be on the road during trick-or-treat hours:

*Watch for children walking on roadways, medians and curbs *Enter and exit driveways and alleys carefully

*At twilight and later in the evening, watch for children in dark clothing

Instruct your children to travel only in familiar, well-lit areas and avoid trick-or-treating alone

Tell your children not to eat any treats until they return home Teach your children to never enter a stranger's home

All costumes, wigs and accessories should be fire-resistant If children are allowed out after dark, fasten reflective tape to their costumes and bags to make sure

they are visible When buying Halloween makeup, make sure it is nontoxic and always test it in a small area first Remove all makeup before children go to bed to prevent skin and eye irritation

Little Free Library is now available

at Johns Creek!

Story and photos By Nancy Sticht

Johns Creek residents may have noticed a new addition to each of our two amenity centers – a brand new Little Free Library has been installed at each location! The Little Free Library book exchange began in 2009 in Wis-consin when a man installed one in his front yard in honor of his mother. He later founded the non-profit organization Little Free Library, to “build community, spark creativity and inspire a love of reading.” There are currently more than 50,000 Little Free Libraries in more than 70 countries and in all 50 states in the U.S. Our CDD board approved the concept in July. A Little Free Library is a free “take a book, share a book” com-munity resource. Books for both children and adults may be donated and borrowed. Our libraries have been installed in lo-cations that are monitored by our community security camer-as, and special care was taken to protect them during Hurri-cane Irma. A sense of community ownership is the key to suc-cess, so all residents are asked to be mindful of the following guidelines: · Please help keep the libraries full of books, and please do-nate only books that are appropriate for all ages · Please care for the books as if they were your own · Please leave only books – no magazines, cards, notes, etc. Many thanks to our CDD board for approving the Little Free

Libraries for our community, to Jim Masters, our property

manager, for overseeing the ordering and installation of them,

and to all the residents who supported the idea when it was

first proposed on Facebook!.

Florida is the lightning capital of the United States and it is ranked as the

number one state for deaths due to lightning.

Did you know that lightning kills more people in the U.S.

than hurricanes and tornadoes combined?

Lightning travels at the speed of light, while thunder travels at the speed of sound.

A single bolt of lightning can discharge about 100 million bolts of electricity and can

travel as far as 10 miles from a cloud. It does not need to be dark directly overhead.

If you can hear thunder, you are within striking distance!

It has been known to travel through clear air and strike 10 miles from the

storm like a bolt out of the blue!

Lightning is actually 5 times hotter than the sun’s surface!

With all of this knowledge and critical information we’d like to remind you of

Johns Creek’s thunderstorm policy. If we hear thunder or see lightning, we will close

the facility for 30 minutes. Every time thunder is heard or lightning is seen, the clock

is restarted to 30 minutes. This is strictly enforced for your safety!

No life is worth the risk!
