October Newsletter Our Lady of Wisdom CES|| 10 Japonica Rd, Toronto, ON M1R 4R7 416-393-5273 F: 416-393-5434
Dear Families:
October is a time to reflect on the gift of life and all of the positive
aspects that this gift encompasses. I am reminded of the recent
celebration that took place in Ottawa, at the Notre Dame Cathedral
Basilica in which Cardinal Lacroix, Cardinal Collins and Cardinal Ouellet in
front of the nation engaged in a celebration which had as its focal point the
re-consecration of the Immaculate Heart of Mary.
Here is an excerpt of the prayer that they communicated:
“May the Cross of your Son, planted on Canadian soil and in Canadian hearts,
be known as the Tree of Life, whose fruit is visible and available to all in
the garden of this world. Mary our Mother, we place our country Canada in
the sanctuary of your Holy Heart for we know that there will find Jesus,
who lives and reigns with the Father in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one
God, forever and ever. Amen.”
Let us take a deliberate pause from the frenetic pace of life and remember
to give praise and thanks to our Lord for the gift of life, family and friends
and remember in our prayers those who struggle and do without during
these very challenging times.
We look forward to welcoming our Grade 1 teacher, Mme. Makar, as she
returns this month to the Our Lady of Wisdom Community. We look
forward to the continued charitable acts of our community via the St.
Francis Table Fall food drive, the pink ribbon campaign to raise funds for
the fight against cancer.
We look forward to having Mrs. Morin, Mrs. Mendoza and their colleagues
from the Rosary Apostolate visit with our students to strengthen their
commitment to “Rosary Devotion” as a prayerful means which brings much
peace and reconciliation, but more importantly helps us to communicate with
God.
As the TCDSB celebrates the final phase of its pastoral plan: "Together
With One Voice--Harmonizing Faith in our Families, Parishes and
Schools,” let us always count our blessings!

School has adopted a BLUE AND WHITE DRESS CODE.
DROPPING OFF & PICKING UP STUDENTS
For the sake of safety, we ask that in the mornings you drop
off your children in the appropriate sections of the school yard
and leave them with our staff. This will help the students
develop routines and it will also help our staff ensure a safe
school yard. We kindly ask that parents do not enter the
Kindergarten yard, most notably the anchored fenced area at
the north east side of the JK/SK yard to maximize visibility
for our staff during morning supervision.
The bell rings at 9 a.m. Please ensure that your child is
dropped off no earlier than 8:45 a.m. Parents should be
aware that the supervision of the children remains their
responsibility before and after school.

OLW HEALTHY SNACK PROGRAM
In conjunction with the non-profit Angel Foundation at the
TCDSB, thank you to everyone for supporting Our Lady of
Wisdom Catholic School’s universal nutrition and healthy
snack program. The program will continue for the academic
year, 2017-2018 and has as its aim the provision of healthy
snacks for all students which adhere to Canada’s Food Guide
and incorporate 3 food groups. The program is a non-profit
initiative which is monitored by Toronto Public Health.
Snacks are delivered to classrooms daily. Should you have any
additional questions or concerns, please direct them to Mrs.
Shirley who is the nutrition program coordinator. Again, we
would like to emphasize that the administration and the
program coordinator are well aware of allergies that students
have and will take appropriate measures to ensure that the
program reflects these needs. This program plays an integral
part in giving our students a healthy boost to their school day,
every day!

Curriculum Night 2017-2018
Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic School opened its doors
to new and current families of students from Year
1/Year 2 to Grade 8 once again during our “2017
Curriculum Night.” Thank you to the many families who
came out that Wednesday evening to meet with our
staff, learn more about their children’s diverse
programs of study and gain a better understanding of
class and grade specific expectations and the parents’
role in supporting their children’s education in a unique
single track Early Immersion milieu. The event was
well attended and provided staff with an opportunity
to meet many new families and re-connect with the
many stalwart families that make Our Lady of Wisdom
Catholic School such a strong and vibrant school
community. Thank you to all of the teachers,
homeroom, French Specialty, our designated early
childhood educators, special education and support
staff for welcoming the parents of new and returning
students, engaging them and opening up their
classrooms throughout the night to give a macro view
of what Catholic education within a French Immersion
model entails.
I would also like to thank our special guests, Ms. Peggy
Crowther from ACE and Megan Coleman, Program
Director of Voila Learning and for providing
information and outreach regarding their programs
and services.
ANAPHYLAXIS ALERT Our Lady of Wisdom is an allergen aware school. There are
students in attendance who suffer from severe and life

Accordingly, please DO NOT bring in snacks/treats/cake to
acknowledge/celebrate a child’s birthday. A safe practice
that the school encourages is the distribution of non-edible
birthday themed treats, such as, pencils, erasers, stickers,
etc… A reminder to parents that administration, teachers and
support staff of the TCDSB are NOT permitted to administer
any type of prescription medication during the school day,
unless we have written signed authorization signed by you the
parents and the prescribing physician.

On behalf of Our Lady of Wisdom's Catholic School Parent Council
(CSPC) of 2017-2018, Mrs. Stonehouse and I, Ms. Prezens, would like
to say that we look forward to working with you, and organizing
exciting events and learning opportunities for the school. As you are
well aware, our first fundraiser, a chocolate fundraiser, is well
underway. It has been met with great success. We appreciate
everyone's time and effort helping to raise money for events and
programs such as, Carnival, Play Day and the Forest of Reading
Program, just to name a few. We also have exciting prizes to be won
like the Apple iPad, gift cards or a milk and cookie party. If we sell
450 cases of chocolate, Mr. Kwon has promised to kiss a fish. How
exciting is that! Please remember that all money collected from the
chocolate fundraiser needs to be given to the school no later than
Wednesday, October 16th, 2017.

Serving TCDSB students and making a positive difference, we congratulate The Angel Foundation for Learning for helping students since its inception in 1987. Donations to the Foundation are welcome and can be sent to: The Angel Foundation for Learning, 80 Sheppard Avenue East, Toronto, ON M2N 6E8. Tax receipts for donations of $20.00 or more will be issued. For more information about the Foundation visit www.angelfoundationforlearning.org
Safe Schools/Student Well-Being
Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic School is very pleased to
continue our partnership with Covenant House, “a
national leader in the issues of at-risk, homeless and
trafficked youth.” On October 23rd, Ms. Fiona Jack
will be visiting with our grade 6, 7, and 8 students to
educate and advocate for much needed change to
address current issues facing youth in our province.
Specifically, the “Trafficked” and “Reality Check”
workshops greatly support the Ontario Ministry of
Education’s Student Success, Safe Schools and Equity
and Inclusive Education strategies and will equip our
youth with timely information to make informed
decisions and seek assistance when necessary.
Specifically, the “Trafficked” presentation introduces
the dangers of human trafficking and explores how
youth are “recruited and how unsuspecting young
people, mostly girls, are being lured online, in malls and
from school yards.” The “Reality Check” presentation,
geared for students in Grade 8, emphasizes a de-
glamourization of street life, looks at empathy,
identifies key resources where youth can obtain
assistance, and encourages students to lead, volunteer
in their communities and give back.
Junior Achievement 2017
“JA Central Ontario is committed to engaging
students and stakeholders in the Toronto, York,
Peel, Halton, Durham and Simcoe regions with
education programs focused on work readiness,
entrepreneurship and financial literacy.”
On December 6th, guest speakers from Junior
Achievement Central Ontario will be at Wisdom to
present the Economics for Success program to
the grade 8 students on October 26th. The JA
program is an invaluable experience that will give
students further insight into the demands of the
global economy.
“In Economics for Success, grade 8-10 students
take a closer look at the advantages of staying in
school, as well as learn what’s needed to succeed
in today’s workforce. Volunteers from the local
business community partner with classroom
teachers to help students see the link between
education and achieving their goals.” Students look
forward to deepening their understanding of how
to create and manage wealth in a complex society.
Athletics Update
Running Club and Cross Country
With our first Cross Country Divisional event coming up fast
on October 12th, 2017 and regionals on Oct. 18, 2017 at Earl
Bales Park, interested students have been getting involved in
OLW’s running club on alternating days for grades 3-4 and 6-
8 thanks to volunteer coaches, Mme. Stephanie, Mlle. O, M.
Wandji, Mlle. Beverly, and Mlle. Tymkewycz.
The Wisdom Warriors Running Club continues to
take place on Monday to Fridays at Willowfield Gardens Park.
Students had the chance to run a distance according to their
age group. The aim of the running club is to foster a love of
running.
Many students interested in qualifying for the OLW
Warriors Cross-Country team participated on a consistent
basis in order to improve their endurance for the upcoming
try-outs. The official try-outs, for all those interested, will
be held the first week of October, specifically, Thursday,
October 5th, 2017.
Softball Tournaments at OLW!
Congratulations to the boys and girls softball teams
who played well during their divisional tournaments at
Bond Park on September 28th and 29th, 2017. Both
teams improved tremendously as the day went on and
had lots of fun learning the game!
STUDENT LEADERSHIP Thank you to Mrs. Nardozi her energetic and committed Me to
We committee (Jessica BP, Juliano V., Tristan T., Austin N.,
Elizabeth V., Claudia N., Grace I., Hannah M., and Ivy R.,) for
2017-2018 to plan ahead for this year and begin the
conversation regarding social justice initiatives on a local and
global scale. Amidst the excitement that typically is attached
with We Day, the inspiring words of Prince Harry, the stories
of courage from Gaten Matarazzi and his experience with a
disorder called cleidocranial dysplasia, and the candid anti-
bullying stance of Carol Todd, mother of Amanda Todd,
students clearly heard the singular message of kindness and
compassion and the call to become the ordinary saints they are
capable of being. Our Lady of Wisdom Catholic School looks
forward to planning for the Year of the school together with
committees like our Me to We extra-curricular team of
students to bring about simple change that has a profound
impact.
Fall/Thanksgiving Food Drive:
Thank you everyone for the many generous donations of non-
perishable and canned food items which the students have
collected up to October 5th, 2017. All proceeds will go to
families in need via St. Francis Table, “a ministry of the
Capuchin-Franciscan Friars and friends committed to creating
a Faith Community with the poor through direct services that
preserve and enhance human dignity.”
Math Corner

Monthly Update from the Board
October 2017
TCDSB Digital Store
As our students continue to learn and adapt to the rapid advances in technology, the Toronto Catholic District School
Board is committed to providing to all of our students and their families, equal access to the latest technology. We
recognize the importance of promoting the 21st Century Competencies by supporting digital literacy, creativity,
innovation, collaboration, and the overall needs and aspirations of all students. To that end, the TCDSB continues to be
on the leading edge of providing technical upgrades and assistance by providing you with a very special opportunity:
the TCDSB Digital Store. Visit our website for more information:
https://www.tcdsb.org/FORSTUDENTS/DigitalStore/Pages/default.aspx
TCDSB Adopts Parent Charter of Principles and Student Charter of Principles In support of its vision of transforming the world through innovation, the Toronto Catholic District School Board is the
first school board to formally adopt guiding sets of principles outlining parent and student rights. The TCDSB is taking
the lead in establishing principles designed to address the basic rights elements of a sound Catholic education to which
parents and students are entitled during a period when individual rights is a major topic of discussion in other sectors
such as the airline travel industry.
The Student Charter of Principles starts: “A student is entitled to reasonably participate in decisions that affect his/her
education and school life. The Board will pursue equity and inclusion for all students of the Board. A student is
entitled to a spiritually, socially, emotionally and physically safe, and positive, school environment, where he/she is
respected and treated in a manner consistent with our Catholic values and teachings.”
The Parent Charter of Principles begins with: “The Board will provide a faith-based publicly funded school with
education grounded in Catholic doctrine, traditions and teachings for your child. A parent or guardian will have
opportunities for involvement in his/her child’s education. A parent or guardian is entitled to a reasonable expectation
that his/her child is learning in a safe, healthy, caring and accessible school, free of discrimination, prejudice, bullying
and harassment.”
Both documents can be found on the TCDSB website at
https://www.tcdsb.org/FORPARENTS/CharterofPrinciples/Pages/default.aspx
TCDSB Continues to Focus on Improving Results The Toronto Catholic District School Board continues to report improvements over time. Literacy results are high,
with improvements evident over the past five years. Mathematics results are less impressive and mirror province-wide
results in that area.
Reading and writing results are strong in both Grade 3 and Grade 6, either approaching or exceeding 80% at or above
the Provincial Standard. In Primary and Junior, mathematics results remain low both in the Board and Province. At
the secondary level, Grade 9 applied mathematics scores have shown improvement but continue to be low. In both
Grade 9 academic mathematics and OSSLT, the Board mirrors the Province and maintains strong results with 80% or
more meeting high standards. The EQAO results continue to point to mathematics and the applied level as an area of
focus.
