On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” And leaving the crowd be-hind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him. A great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. -Mark 4:35-41

Well, it was an initiation by water and wind for sure as Irma decided to create some excitement. Kidding aside, Harvey, Irma, and Maria created extraordinary devastation displac-ing families, destroying crops, obliterating communities, and testing even the strongest of faith. In the streams of tears that follow such calamities, humanitarian help underlies a spiritual hope. Questions of God’s presence in the midst of disaster are observed in the loving kindness of God’s peo-ple who are less interested in political narratives on either side of the aisle and more in giving witness to the world that indeed Jesus Christ does calm the storms, who resounds “Peace!” to a world thrust into chaos, who calls His people to

live into the reality of being His ambassadors.

The Apostle Paul encourages us to, “not only look to our own needs but to esteem the needs of others as better than ourselves.” We are still cleaning up, electricity is back online, potable water is now flowing; we are receiving assessments, repairing, re-nor-malizing. We are living into a new normal where life is stabilizing, the waters returning to calm. Yet, that is not the case for everyone. We must not fall into gazing at the trapping of mirror like waters lulling us into a complacency or assertion that indeed all is well with God’s people. The words of the Master to “peace” is also a herald to us, as His people, to live and work into that faith action of proclaiming the peace of Christ into the battered lives tossed to and fro by the storms of chaos. Go and do because in many, there is still no peace but chaos. In that, all God’s people will be reminded of the Lord who indeed cares, indeed is the God of life, the God of hope, the One who can and does calm the most devastating storms.

Be proactive this month, dear family in Christ. Notice those around of need. How can we, at RPC, serve those still in storms more fully? Challenge me on how we can be wit-nesses to Jesus Christ more effectively. Press me beyond my own complacency. Help me hear and act upon the resounding voice of Christ, “Peace! Be still!”

To the glory of Jesus Christ,

Rev. Michael Hafele

Operation Christmas ChildSince 1993 Samaritan's Purse has been delivering more than 135 million shoe boxes to children in over 100 countries. The vital ministry of Samaritan's Purse is a wonderful way to get Riverside involved in evangelizing and discipling children worldwide.

Every gift is an opportunity for the Gospel. With your gifts in the shoeboxes and God's word (in their language) they will learn about God's salvation through His Son Jesus Christ - The Greatest Gift. Please return all boxes by mid-November to Fellowship Hall in order to be shipped around the world.

See Cliff Schmitt (321) 783-5029 or JB Olds (321) 784-1582. Watch for the shoebox table in Fellowship Hall.

There is a box in the Narthex for any items - soap, washcloths, etc., you may wish to drop for future gifts to needy groups in the community and the world.

Jesus said for us to “Love your neighbor as yourself”

That’s why Riverside supports Family Promise whose mission is “to bring people inneed together with people who want to help and to provide the framework thatturns compassion into action.”

How do we give support: We host families in need … and we now have two moreopportunities to assist in the mission:

· The 6th Annual Golf Scramble - You do not need to be a pro golfer in to participate!Join us Saturday, Nov. 4 at the Indian River Colony Club golf course in Viera FL. If you are interested, please contact Joe Marshall at 453-2890 or via email [email protected] … or see him at church! Players will be treated to a deliciousmeal after the fun!

· The Helicopter Ball Drop will be held on the 9th hole that same day. All the purchased balls will be dropped from up in the air at the close of the tournament. The owner of the ball nearest to the hole will win $2500 cash! You do not need be a golfer or to be present to win. Your individual number will be on each ball youpurchase. Balls can be purchased online at www.familypromiseofbrevard.org/current-events or see Joe!

October 8-18, 2017 BIRP Mission Week

“Under the Baobab Tree” Madagascar Comes to FloridaIn October, the Madagascar Mission Network will hold a conference in Orlando bringing together all of the PC(USA) mission co-workers in Madagascar and the president of PC(USA)’s partner church there, the Fiangonan’i Jesoa Kristy eto Madagasikara (FJKM) church. Brevard and Indian River Presbyteries (BIRP) decided to hold our thirty-seventh annual conference early. Having Pastor Ammi, the president of FJKM, is a special opportunity. He oversees FJKM’s 5000 congregations, 4 seminaries, and about 600 primary and secondary schools. FJKM is the largest Protestant denomination in Africa, serving about 5 million be-lievers, making it roughly three times the size of PC(USA).This year’s BIRP Conference will be supporting the work of Dan and Elizabeth Turk, PC(USA) mission co-workers who have worked in Madagascar over 20 years. Funds raised will be shared between the new FJKM Fruit Center that Dan has helped the FJKM get started and for the Isoavina clean drinking water & sanitation project that Elizabeth is assisting.New Madagascar Fruit Center at Mahatsinjo Maevatanana, established in 2017 through collaboration with PC(USA), enables the FJKM to provide training and quality fruit trees to help subsistence farmers get out of poverty by growing fruit trees. The center specializes in mangos and other types of fruits that either do well with a long dry season or can do well when irrigated.Isoavina Clean Drinking Water & Sanitation Project will provide the community of Isoavina Ambanitsena and the FJKM Conference Center with safe drinking water. The project involves renovating the existing system that is over 30 years old and expanding it. The project will also provide drinking water and out-houses for 2 schools. But providing safe drinking water alone is not enough to stop the cycle of disease. This is why part of this project includes training in washing hands and using good health habits. In Mada-gascar, diarrhea is one of the top 5 killers of children under five years of age. There is an all-BIRP potluck dinner on Saturday October 14th at 6:00 p.m. at Merritt Island Presbyte-rian Church. All BIRP churches are invited and almost all the speakers will be present, so you can meet speakers that may not be coming to our church for events. The mission speakers are Pastor Irako Andriama-hazosoa Ammi, FJKM President; Dr. Doug Tilton, Regional Liaison for Southern Africa; Dan and Elizabeth Turk, Mission Co-Workers to Madagascar; Jan Heckler, Mission Co-Worker to Madagascar; and Rev. Bill and Nancy Warlick, Outreach Foundation. Mission Speakers at Riverside:Wednesday 10/11 7:30 AM Men’s Bible Study – Dan and Elizabeth TurkWednesday 10/11 7:00 PM Women’s Bible Study - Dan or Elizabeth TurkRiverside members/guests are welcome to attend the Wednesday’s mission speakers.
