Join us for Trunk or Treat on Saturday, October 28 from 5:30-7:30. Please arrive by 5:00 if you want to set up your trunk to hand out candy.

Door prize drawings will be held at 6:30. (You must be present to win.) We will be serving hot dogs, chips, and cookies. Miranda Barnett is the event leader.

FALL FUN FEST SUNDAY, OCTOBER 15 AT 12:00

Get ready for a Super Sunday Funday! We will have a church picnic in the pavilion.

Bring a covered-dish to share. Table service provided. Wear comfortable clothing.

JOY OF CHRISTMAS CONCESSION STAND

Our church has the opportunity to work at the Joy of Christmas concession stand in Firestone Park on November 23, 24, 25, and 26. Volunteers are needed to be there from 5:30 - 9:30 each evening.

Donations of hotdogs, buns, cookies, small bags of chips, coffee, hot chocolate, popcorn, and paper products are also needed. All money raised from this event will be used toward the church deficit. Clip boards will be passed in church to sign up to work or donate.

A teenager stepped up to help his mother in the kitchen by chopping the onions for the casserole, he asked her, “Know what the secret is for not tearing up when you slice onions?” “Those special goggles?” she guessed. “I saw some in a cook’s catalog.” “Nope,” the teen smirked. “The secret is don’t get emotionally attached.” The teen grinned. During the rest of the onion chopping, his tears of laughter ran down his cheeks. Not getting emotionally involved. It’s a safe way to do things. But is it God’s way? When I arrived at East Fairfield I talked about what it means to be a disciple. This past month as I’ve been through an unexpected surgery, which turned out to be more complicated and more difficult than expected, I was the recipient of intentional discipleship. I believe true discipleship is intentional. It is seeing a need and reaching out. It’s an emotional connection between people. Jesus himself told the parable of the good Samaritan to teach about being emotionally involved. When a traveler was robbed, beaten, and left for dead beside the road, time went by. A priest came by, but he passed the man by on the other side. Ditto the next church leader, a Levite. Why? Just guessing—both didn’t want to be made unclean by touching what might be a dead body; they didn’t feel they had the time; both already had plans. But mostly both didn’t want to be emotionally involved. Jesus described the one who rescued the traveler as a Samaritan, a person of mixed race and beliefs that separated him and all of his kind from the Israelites. Samaritans were considered lowlife, unworthy. The compassion the Samaritan showed is an example to us all: get emotionally involved when a need comes up. You showed it to Chuck and I and you will never know the depth of my gratitude for all of you. You reached out to us with meals, cards, cleaning, and prayers and we felt the flow of love. To show intentional discipleship applies to those of all races, social and economic standing, and net worth. People are valuable to God. He made us all. There is no reason to refuse to help if you are able. No need to be emotionally involved in the life of onions, but be there for people, especially those in need.

UNITED METHODIST WOMEN NEWS

Joy Circle The UMW Joy Circle met on Monday, August 28 with 16 members present with Kathleen Smith as hostess. She presented a program with Survival Kits for Christians and brought some of her many quilts to show.

The reading program was reported on and certificates from last year’s reading were handed out. Cards were signed and sent to those in need. Sue Kariher reported on the prayer blanket program and shared that 99 blankets have been given out so far. Our blanket that was entered at the county fair won a blue ribbon and was presented to a veteran at a ceremony at the fairgrounds on Sept. 10.

We continue to collect stamps for the Southwest Indian Field. We still sell brooms and have several in stock but need to find a new supplier as the original company has gone out of business. We are looking forward to the annual Bazaar on Nov. 7 & 8. Our next meeting is Monday Sept. 26 with Jan Selby and Sue Kariher as hostesses.

Hope Circle met on Thursday, August 31 at 6:00 PM at the home of Denise Webber in

their pavilion. We enjoyed fried chicken, jojos, glazed carrots (made by Marci), watermelon, and cupcakes (made by Charlotte). Those in attendance were Carrie Holsinger, Deann Davis, Charlotte Vollnogle, Denise Webber, Marci Sipe, and Ashley & Haley Sipe. We reviewed our fund balance and made plans for serving a Sorority dinner on Thursday, September 14.

CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS PROGRAM

The children will present the Christmas musical, Shine, Jesus Shine this year. It is the story of a celestial star search that takes place to select the Christmas star that will shine over the stable where Jesus will be born. You will meet Stella, the Star Polisher, Celeste, Supernova, and a shining host of others who are preparing for the big night.

Rehearsals will be Thursday evenings from 6:00-7:00. Our first meeting will be a party where we will listen to the musical, eat some goodies, and play a game or two. We hope to have lots of kids join us for the fun.

Our church has been praying for our country for almost two years. It occurred to me that we might want to pray for ourselves as citizens of this great nation. November 7 is Election Day. It would be wise for us to pray for the Lord's guidance when we vote. Voting is a privilege and a responsibility not to be taken lightly. Are we making an effort to learn what the ballot issues are? Have we read the actual ballot language? What do we know about the candidates? Are they more than just a name to us? We need to look for the candidates whose values most closely follow the teachings of the Bible. God bless you as you decide how to vote this year. - Cindy Ridzon and Sue Kariher

Rev. Dr. Barry Walker received a Quilt made by the sewing group at East Fairfield United Methodist Church.

It was presented during a program for veterans at the Columbiana County Fairgrounds

Rev. Dr. Barry Walker was commissioned in the US Army in January 1964 and worked in an armored tank unit. He was re-commissioned a Chaplain in 1966. He saw active duty during the Vietnam era from October 1966 to April 1970. He also saw duty with I Corps Artillery in Korea. He is a Lieutenant Colonel, now retired after 35 years and 10 months service, both active duty and the US Army Reserves. He participated in REFORGER during August through September 1987 in the Netherlands and Germany.

March 1988 found him on duty in Honduras. He has been awarded 2 Bronze Stars, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal (6 times, once with Valor), the National Defense Service Medal with 2 Bronze Stars, Expeditionary Force Medal, the Southwest Service medal with 3 Bronze Stars, among several others. He served in Desert Shield and Desert Storm from Sept. 1990 to June 1991 with the 475th Quartermaster Group from Farrell PA. Chaplain Walker was with this unit when it was hit during the SCUD Missile attack of February 1991.

Coconut Cream Pie Submitted by Kathleen Smith

1 baked 9” pie shell 3 cups milk 3 egg yolks, slightly beaten (save whites)

¾ cup sugar ½ tsp salt 5 Tbsp. cornstarch 1½ cups shredded coconut 2 Tbsp. margarine 1½ tsp. vanilla Meringue 3 egg whites ¼ cup sugar ¼ tsp Cream of Tartar

Cookbook Corner 8 - Coconut Cream Pie

1. Heat milk in microwave 4 minutes. 2. Mix sugar, salt, and cornstarch in large bowl. Stir in hot milk. 3. Stir ¾ cup of hot mixture into egg yolks, stirring constantly. Return egg mixture to large bowl. 4. Cook in microwave 5 minutes or till thick, stirring every 2 minutes. 5. Add coconut, margarine, and vanilla. Stir well. Pour into baked pie shell.

6. Beat egg whites, gradually add ¼ c. sugar and ¼ tsp cream of tartar, till stiff peaks form. 7. Put on pie. Top with a little coconut. 8. Bake at 350° till lightly browned.
