Norwalk Business Expo Recap

Our booth at the “Norwalk Business Expo/National Night Out “was a great success. Our Soroptimist International of Norwalk/Santa Fe Springs cooling towels were a hit. We collected over $100 in unsolicited donations. A great op-portunity at an event, simply to strengthen our clubs relationship with the city leaders, local business and the residents of Norwalk. It also provided a great opportunity to give our current sponsor a “Thank You” gift. Natalie, did an amazing job in organizing the event. Thank you to Marilee, Afaf, Irene, Marilyn’s Husband Herb, Gina and Debbie who vol-unteered their time– You all made this events awesome!

Santa Fe Springs Business Expo Recap

Our booth at the Santa Fe Springs Business Expo provided our club the opportunity to introduce our newly combined club to this service area. We socialized with many business, introducing them to our club and services. We also provided them with information on how they can be a become a spon-sor and we made some great business contacts for the club. We also pro-vided our Soroptimist International of Nor-walk/Santa Fe Springs cooling towels for a small donation. This event was a hit! Our goal was to increase our clubs public awareness to the local community businesses within Santa Fe Springs and we certainly accomplished that. Thank you Natalie and Marilyn for organizing this event. We all had a fun time ! Natalie, once again, you did an amazing job. Thank you to Marilee, Carol, Debbie, Marilyn, Afaf and Henrietta (& Laurel- who co-volunteered our booth, along with her employer’s booth) for volunteering their time. Your commitment to our mission is amazing to see in action.

MARKING WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY – KENYA Soroptimist International (SI) and Women for Water Partnership (WFWP) members, together with the Ngara Girls High School, Nai-robi, mobilized school girls, women and other like-minded stake-holders to participate in a school environment clean-up and tree-planting event, to mark this year’s World Environment Day. Ngara girls high school is situated right in the center of the Jua-Kali (open-air) industrial area of Nairo-bi’s central business region. The schools proximity to motor garages, small-scale businesses, artisan trading sheds and an open-air market, attracts a great deal of plastic waste. World Environment Day was a good opportunity to sensitize the students and neighboring communities to the need for clean surroundings and the dangers of plastic waste on the environment. “If you can’t re-use it, then refuse it” was the slogan adopted by over 1200 Ngara school girls during the celebration. Ngara Girls High School mounted an excellent rangers, and girl

guides guard of honor, for inspection by the invited chief guest speaker. SI and WFWP UNEP Representatives, Asha Abdulrahman, Mary Muia and Sophia Kipkoech, partnered with the School Board of Management, UNEP, UNESCO, Center for Environment Jus-tice and Development, SI Union of Ken-ya members led by President Elect

Madam Juliet Wamiri, Kenya National Roll Ball team and the Kenya National Football team. The speakers during the event urged the school fraternity and communities to break up with single-use of plastics and for schools and homes to be free from plastic waste, whilst participants marked the day with tree-planting and cleaning up the school environment. The SI UNEP Representative, SI Africa Federation Chair Mary Muia gave a moti-vational speech, encouraging students to choose serious career paths and not conform to stereotypical roles for women, saying that girls have what it takes to be water engineers, environmental experts and to advance in other science and technology related careers. The tides began to turn this World Environment Day, with global host India committing to the ban of all single-use plastics by 2022. #WorldEnvironmentDay became the #1 trending topic worldwide.

Founders Day

5

Soroptimist celebrates Founders Day on October 3, which acknowledges the day in 1921 when the first club in Alameda County, California, called to order its first business meeting. Clubs celebrate the found-ing of the organization with activities to promote the organization and its early mission to “foster the ideal of service” through programs that now focus on improving the lives of women and girls in local communities and throughout the world. I encourage all Soroptimist members to wear their Soroptimist badge on founders day. Wearing your badge during your normal activities is a great way to increase awareness of our programs and clubs. It’s also a great way to seek out potential new members or sponsors.

Historical Video– 65 years of Service

As of November 2018, Soroptimist International of Norwalk will have been providing services to the woman and girls of our local communities for 65 years. Our club is partnering with the city of Norwalk to create a video highlighting Soroptimist, our club, our services and our programs since our charter in 1953 thru today. Our club is blessed, with many historical documents that past members and leader documented, from list of members, to service projects and hundreds of pictures. Additionally, we are blessed to have two lifetime members, from 1953 still with us. The video, unfortunately, will most likely not be complete in time for our December Brunch, however, the city is working to provide us with a brief promo of the full video for that event. The final video will be unveiled at our Anniversary Award celebration in March 2019.
