COMMODORE’S REPORT

Hi Everyone,

Well another month has gone by, and there never seem to be enough hours in the day. All our committee members are working hard in both their personal lives and in their respective roles supporting our beloved Club.

I would like to make a special thanks to Dean and Lisa Rosewarne with Kiwi Sheds for their donation of a new TV and a soon to be presented new Bar Leaner. With the help of Rod Grimwood, our Bar and Kitchen Committee Member, they have worked hard on this.

The meat raffles have been going well and monies from this has been going towards our future sailors of youth sailing. Which roll’s on to the hard work that Doyle, BOI Yamaha, and Great Escape Yacht Charters have done to get our chase boat back up and in good running order. Let’s also not forget David Krebs and all the others that support him for the countless hours that have gone into our new Racing Season and keeping up with the changing rules and rec-ommendations that keep us safe. Thanks Guys!!

As the yachts are starting to appear on the Customs dock, it’s a good indication that the new season is upon us. We are still looking for some volunteers to help with some maintenance on our Club Dock. If you can spare an hour here or an hour there that would be a great help before our dock starts to get busy. Let us know by contacting the office or our ‘House’ man - Chris Williams e: [email protected] or m: 027 499 1123

We had a good night with Yachting New Zealand recently sorting out some of the goals for this up coming year and seeing how YNZ is supporting not only our beautiful environment up here in the BOI but also Yachting in general. This goes beyond yacht racing, to include just getting people out on the water cruising Power or Sail. There is a wealth of information on their site so please don’t forget we are all member’s so have a look and take advantage of the support they have to offer.

Lastly, please don’t forget that it’s the members that make a club a good club, so if you have any idea’s or suggestions, speak up, and lets all work together.

Until next month...

Cameron

P.S. - Don’t forget to call in and pick up your very own copy of our new printed calendar, available in the clubrooms now.

MUSKET COVE REGATTA 2018Musket Cove Resort greeted us on Friday with a chilled coconut water and a bead necklace. Th en it was on to the opening night celebrations at the Island Bar, a bar with a sand fl oor out on the island at the end of the marina. It’s where all the socialising happens for the cruisers. Ernesto hosted us for the week of sailing on Libertee.

Th e next morning it was all go for the Pirate Race, where all were encouraged to dress up as pirates and to do what ever it took to win the race to Beachcomber Island. Motor or sail, and water fi ghting was encouraged! Libertee’s fi gure-head “Libby” was dressed up for the occasion.

We were taken up the beach by pirates with ropes around our necks and made to drink the Fijian overproof rum a.k.a rocket fuel! Beach-comber was full of a much younger audience and there was a very rowdy line up of games from limbo to Bula dancing and Fijian per-formances. By now we were all getting used to

the taste of Fiji Bitter and Fiji Gold and it was time to head back to Musket Cove, with a very strong wind and sea chop to contend with it was a very WET trip back!!!

The last day of the regatta was Wednesday where we sailed the “Round Malolo Classic.” There was a bit more breeze than Libertee had hoped for, so unfortunately the big boats took off on us, but within our competition we did well. A few well deserved rums were drank aboard before heading ashore for the final awards night dinner and a pig on the spit feast. What a great holiday to be on island time, relax, drink and laugh with friends. Bula Vinaka, see you again soon Fiji

Sunday was a chill-out day with a Ratu Rum Fun Run where we had to collect a playing card and have a shot of rum at each stop, then the team at the end with the highest hand of poker

won a bottle of rum. Monday was our first serious race - The Sandbank Race. The course started through a channel in the sandbar off Malolo Island, around a mark and back. Libertee was first over the line and fifth over the finish. Wooohooo! We played games, laughed and drank on the sandbank until the high tide was lapping at our feet.

SHE RISES

As the sky begins to brighten, Glowing orange, pink and rose, You know that she is growing, Higher and higher. You know you need to keep looking, Because one more sentence, One more paragraph, Or even a trip to the toilet, And you’ll miss her.She keeps rising, and risin, And you can feel the warmth increasing with each new moment. The glow, the light it gets stronger and stronger, And then she emerges,Just over the horizon, The vibrant ribbon wrapped around her, So beautiful and clear. And still she keeps rising.Rising in all her glory, Rising in her power, To illuminate your day, Your world, Pushing back the darkness,Warming, Shining, shimmering on the water, You’re captivated by her, Unable to look away. But you’ve been told you musnt’ look at her, She’ll hurt your eyes, But you still keep watch, In anticipation, In awe and in wonder. She has almost breached, Almost made it.And then you realise…She was already full, Had already made it.And it was you who couldn’t see her, Until now.You keep watching, Your smile growing with her

Watching her shimmer, Watching her ribbon glowing brighter and brighter, Almost neon. You smile deeper, Your eyes close for just a moment, And yet there she is, Behind your eyes, Still shining brightly, There is no escape, Nothing can dim her light, Nothing and no one.She is here to stay, Always shining, Always lighting your way.You watch as she emerges in all her gloryAll her power, All her gentleness, And you breathe.Deeper and deeper. She lights you up inside, The smile on your face growing from deep within you, You breather her in,And you watch as she keeps rising,

Rising, Rising. And as she lets go of the kiss, So slowly releasing the tenderness of her grasp on the horizon, A kiss so tender. So slowly letting go, And you know,You know there has never been a kiss so beautiful. And then they part, And there she is.As bright as…And you can’t even fi nd the world as your soul is over fl owing, She leaves you gazing, She leaves you breathless, Because she is beautiful, Because of her glow, Because of her lightAnd because of her power over you.You look away, Only to look back again, And again.Blinded by her beauty, You close your eyes, And just let go.She has captivated you.You are her willing prisoner. You allow her to guide you, To embrace you,

To allow you to simply be, Because that is all there is, To simply be.Simply you.Beautiful.Powerful, And breathtaking. Her spell has been cast, And now you rise further, Basking in all that is beautiful, As gratitude fl oods your soul,For bearing witness, For being aliveFor all that is possible, And for all that is possible, And for all you are about to receive, Now and forever moe.She has risen. You have risen, And together you’ll keep on rising, In your power, In your beauty, And in love.

BOB MCDAVITT’S WEATHER CORNER

“Red sky at night, sailors delight; red sky in the morning, sailors warning”(land dwellers change the sailor into a shepherd).Reading weather signs is one thing that humans have been doing ever since we have been human enough to detect pattern amongst the chaos. And this sign is a good one, often proving true. In Matthew 16.2, Jesus told the Pharisees that “When evening comes and the sky is red, you say the weather will be fair, and in the morning when the sky is red and overcast, you say today will be stormy—you know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but not the signs of the times!

“A Red sky at night is a delight.” Explanation, it’s as easy as 1,2,3:

1.Th e sun sets in the west (plus or minus)

2. For many parts of the planet (including some tropical Islands), the winds at and above cloud level are from northwest/west/or southwest, so weather features tend to be steered from west to east. So, If the western horizon is cloud-free, then there is a good chance that our tomorrow’s weather may be cloud-free.3. Sunlight shining slant-wise loses all but its red colouring.Sun shining thru clear air experiences Rayleigh scattering (see last month’s Tell Tales) – ni-trogen and oxygen molecules in the air scatter the light sideways and outwards to fi ll the sky. Blue scatters best, and red remains going forwards. Also, near the ground the air gets dirty: it accumulates particles of dust and salt and smoke that are small enough to fl oat around (aerosols). As light shines thru these on these materials undergoes more scattering, called the Tyndall eff ect (see last month’s tell tales), so that only the longer wavelengths of the red colour remains in the light beam.

above right - Red and lavender Sunset over Auckland, promising a fi ne day tomorrow. As the sun moves to the horizon, it beams through an increasingly longer path of the atmo-sphere than at noon. It takes on a golden hue, or, if there is a lot of dust about, then the clouds above are lit in a rosy red. Colours can be seen to go through the spectrum and some colours are enhanced according to the aerosols of the day. Red light from the aerosol layer may mix with the blue light scattered above it to form purple or lavender light.

RED SKY AY NIGHT....

RED SKY AY NIGHT.... ‘MetBob’ McDavitt

Bob McDavitt for Tell TalesBob McDavitt is the weather guru that uses /\/\etBoB to provide weather information for

cruising sailors, primarily for those in the South Paci c.

“A Red Sky in the morning is a warning” Explanation: Sun rises over the eastern horizon. If that’s where the clear skies are, incoming light is rendered reddish by passing through cloud-free but dirty air. If there are clouds over-head, this usually means we are on the back end of a departing area of dry weather, and thus, as is the nature with weather, on the forward side of the next lot of rain approaching from the west.

Dawn horizontally side-lights the overhead clouds with a reddish glow, enhancing our senses of pending gloom.Th anks to www.hko.gov.hk/education/edu01met/wxphe/ele_redskye.htmfor the diagrams

Like a red morn that ever yet betokened,Wreck to the seaman, tempest to the eld,

Sorrow to the shepherds, woe unto the birds,Gusts and foul aws to herdmen and to herds.
