AUGUSTINIAN HERITAGE

ALL PARENTS WELCOME TO JOIN ST. MONICA’S PRAYER GROUP

NEXT CHAPTER FOR REV. BRO. MAX The province of Augustinians of the West on June 23rd, 2018 celebrated the ordination to the diaconate of Rev. Bro. Maxime Villeneuve, OSA by Most. Reverend Bishop Daniel Turley, OSA of Chulucanas, Peru.

Bro. Max returns to Saints for 2018-19 and will serve as the Director of Christian Service. Bro Max will be ordained an Augustinian Priest in December 2018.

Who is St. Monica?St. Monica is a saint who had an intelligent but lazy son named Augustine. In spite of his mother’s efforts, he was a wild, pleasure-seeking youth and led a dissolute life. Yet, St. Monica persisted and continued to pray for her son. Finally, at the age of 32, Augustine changed his life, was baptized, and became a great saint and Doctor of the Church.

MissionLike St. Monica, we as parents pray for our children to be guided by Christ, especially during the formative years of high school. As a service organization, our mission is to pray for our sons, families, and the staff and members of the St. Augustine community.

Requesting PrayersWe have a prayer chain over 150 strong. If you would like us to pray for a special intention, send your request in one of two ways:Place your petition in the prayer request box located in the school’s main office. Email your petition to the prayer group at [email protected].

Join us for “Thursdays with St. Monica”We invite you to join as a regular member or on a drop-in bases. We assemble every Thursday morning for Mass at 7:45 a.m. in the chapel at Vasey Patio. Afterwards, we pray the Rosary. If you do not have time to stay for the entire Rosary, feel free to stay just for a decade or two.Come as often as you can, stay as long as you can. For more information, please contact Juan Ibaibarriaga at: [email protected].

SCENES FROM THIS YEAR’S FAMILY MASSOne of the beloved first of the school year traditions is for the school to conduct a Family Mass on campus followed by a Brunch on Vasey Patio. It’s a peaceful time to meet and greet members of the Saints Community from frosh to faculty. Fr. Kirk Davis, O.S.A. officiated Mass with Bro. Max.

KOLLEGE KORNER The new school year is well underway and all seniors have been instructed about how to start their college applications. Seniors should be organizing their calendar of deadlines and have confirmed with a teacher to write a letter of recommendation if they are applying to a school that needs one. More than 100 college representatives are scheduled to visit Saints this Fall. Students should check Naviance for a calendar of visits and register to meet representatives from school’s they are interested in. This year’s Jesuit College Fair will (take place/took place?) during the school day on October 2nd.

There are still more SAT and ACT test dates this Fall if seniors want one last shot at improving their scores. Tried & True Tutoring has partnered with Saints for an ACT prep class that begins on October 1st and takes place Monday and Wednesday nights leading up to the October 27th exam. Talk to the counseling staff about how to register and get a discount. National Testing Day for the PSAT is Wednesday, October 10th. All 9-11 grade students will take the test that day and school will dismiss at approximately 11:30am that day. Seniors will have a separate activity that day. Sophomore College Parent Night will take place Wednesday, October 17th at 6:30pm in the new theater. Important information about college planning and course selection will highlight the evening.

Academic success is the desired outcome for all of our students. Students who are in need of extra help or instruction are encouraged to take advantage of the tutoring opportunities available at Saints. Each faculty member is available to help students academically outside of class hours. Teachers set their own tutoring schedules and a copy of the tutoring schedule is listed here and is also available at www.sahs.org under the Academics tab. Students needing specialized tutoring in Math can turn to the Math Excellence Peer-Tutoring Program. Open and running from 7:00 a.m. to 7:40 a.m. every day in Mendel Hall Room 212.

KEEPING FIT. An important part of the Saints Experience is participating in club sports and on campus Intramural activities. Halo Joe’s Beach Volleyball Team is just one of the many opportunities available to Saintsmen to compete in athletics. For example, this year’s sand demons are enjoying a great season. At last report, they were undefeated in competition. The team plays in Ocean Beach on Thursdays. ON BEING A GREAT FAN AT SAINTS SPORTING EVENTSContinued from page 1

DEAR PARENTS & FRIENDSContinued from page 1

• Have a life of your own outside of your son’s sports participation.

DO WITH OTHER PARENTS:• Make friends with other parents at

events. Socializing can make the event more fun for you.

• Volunteer as much as you can. Sports depend upon the time and energy of involved parents.

• Police your own ranks: Work with other parents to ensure that all parents

• behave appropriately at practices and competitions.

DO WITH COACHES:• Leave the coaching to the coaches.• Give them any support they need to help

them do their jobs better.• Communicate with them about your

son, you can learn about your son from each other.

• Inform them of relevant issues at home that might affect your son at practice.

• Inquire about the progress of your son. You have a right to know.

• Make the coaches your allies.

DO FOR YOUR SONS:• Provide guidance for your son, but do

not force or pressure them.• Assist them in setting realistic goals

for participation.• Emphasize fun, skill development and

other benefits of sports participation, e.g.,cooperation, competition, self-discipline, commitment.

• Show interest in their participation: help them get to practice, attend competitions, and ask questions.

• Provide; a healthy perspective to help

your son understand success and failure.• Emphasize and reward effort rather

than results.• Intervene if your son’s behavior is

unacceptable during practice or competitions.

• Understand that your son may need a break from sports occasionally.

• Give your son some space when needed. Part of sports participation involves them figuring things out for themselves.

• Keep a sense of humor. If you are having fun and laughing, so will your son.

• Provide regular encouragement.• Be a healthy role model for your

son by being positive and relaxed at competitions and by having balance in your life.

• GIVE THEM UNCONDITIONAL LOVE: SHOW THEM YOU LOVE THEM WHETHER THEY WIN OR LOSE!!!

DON'T FOR YOURSELF:• Base your self-esteem and ego on the

success of your son’s sports participation.• Care too much about how your

son performs.• Lose perspective about the importance

of your son's sports participation.

DON'T WITH OTHER PARENTS:• Make enemies of other parents.• Talk about others in the sports

community. Talk to them. It is more constructive.

DON'T WITH COACHES:• Interfere with their coaching during

practice or competitions.• Work at cross purposes with them.

Make sure you agree philosophically

and practically on why your son is playing sports and what they may get out of sports.

DON'T WITH YOUR SON:• EXPECT YOUR SON TO GET

ANYTHING MORE FROM THEIR SPORT THAN A GOOD TIME, PHYSICAL FITNESS, MASTERY AND LOVE OF A LIFETIME SPORT, AND TRANSFERABLE LIFE SKILLS.

• Ignore your son’s bad behavior in practice or competitions.

• Ask the son to talk with you immediately after a competition.

• Show negative emotions while watching them perform.

• Make your son feel guilty for the time, energy and money you are spending and the sacrifices you are making.

• Think of your son’s sports participation as an investment for which you expect a return.

• Live out your own dreams through your son’s sports participation.

• Compare your son’s progress with that of other players.

• Badger, harass, use sarcasm, threaten or use fear to motivate your son; it only demeans them.

• Expect anything from your son except their best effort.

• EVER DO ANYTHING THAT WILL CAUSE THEM TO THINK LESS OF THEMSELVES OR OF YOU!

gender stereotypes. Perhaps not surprisingly, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is a prime opponent of the single-sex education movement. An ACLU spokeswoman was quoted in a Forbes.com article (5/20/2010) on the subject and said, "The programs push the notion of a fundamental difference in the way boys and girls learn." And there it is...the elephant in the room. The “are-there-differences-between-boys-and-girls?” question in education. Much of the research indicates, yes, there are huge differences in the ways boys and girls learn. "Different" isn't better -- and it certainly isn't worse. It's just different. And respecting and honoring those differences, rather than snuffing them, is part of our faith and certainly our mission here at Saints.

Here on Nutmeg street we have a 95-year tradition of encouraging each young man individually, respecting his natural gifts, inclinations and personal development. Saints celebrates boys! And our faculty and their classrooms are a focused attempt to tailor education to the distinct way young men learn.

Yours in the Spirit of Catholic Education,

James HornePrincipal

YES, BEING A NATIONAL MERIT SCHOLAR IS A BIG DEAL Saints is happy that five of the members in its Senior Class are being recognized as National Merit Scholars. “Academics is at the forefront of the good work being done at Saints, and these young men have been recognized for their outstanding performance on the PSAT,” said Principal, James Horne. “We are excited for them and wish them well in the future stage of the National Merit competition.” The National Merit® Scholarship Program is an annual academic competition among high school students for recognition and college scholarships. The program is conducted by National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), a not-for-profit organization that operates without government assistance. The 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT®) is the qualifying test for entry to the 2019 National Merit Program.
