ANNUAL HIGH HOLIDAY FOOD DRIVE

Across the country, communities like

ours are activating Jewish values in

responding to economic challenges

faced by neighbors, friends, and fami-

lies. In this spirit, we will be joining hundreds of

synagogues, Jewish Federations, Mazon, and other

groups by collecting non-perishable food items

during the High Holy Days.

Please look in your cupboards, add items to your

shopping list for this effort, and contribute at least

the equivalent of meals you will miss by fasting for

Yom Kippur. We have been told the most-needed

food items are: canned meats (tuna and chicken),

meals in cans (such as beef stew, ravioli, and

soups), canned vegetables and fruit, dry and

canned beans, peanut butter, cereal, and rice.

PLEASE DO NOT BRING ANYTHING WITH PORK OR

SHELLFISH to the synagogue.

We hope you will fill up the bags we distribute and

bring additional bags from home to the syna-

gogue. The day after the end of Sukkot (October

21st) the bags of food items will be delivered to

the food bank.

way to start the new year – good for recipients and

CLS INTRODUCES KADIMAH CLASS

The Kadimah class (5th grade

and up) is an enthusiastic group

of students sharing their Jewish

knowledge and experience. We

are strengthening Hebrew skills

and exploring key figures in

Jewish history. This group will be

participating in Shabbat morning

services throughout the year, and

they are terrific singers, so be

sure to come join them!

Please contact Leah Mundell at

928-600-2575 or leahmun-

[email protected] for more infor-

mation about our Kadimah class.

INTRODUCTIONS... —PAUL COHEN

One of the most enjoyable

aspects of serving Congregation

Lev Shalom is learning about the

people who also serve…

On October 11 and 12, 2019,

Rabbi Bonnie Koppell will be

visiting Rabbi here at CLS. Rabbi

Koppell serves as Associate Rabbi to the Temple

Chai community in Phoenix, Arizona, where she

also directs the Deutsch Family Shalom Center. A

native of Brooklyn, New York, she is a graduate of

the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College where

she received a Doctor of Divinity degree in 2006.

She holds a Master’s Degree in Religion from

Temple University. She was granted a Bachelor of

Arts degree from Brandeis University and

graduated Magna Cum Laude with High Honors in

Philosophy. In 2013 she earned a Master of

Strategic Studies from the US Army War College.

In 2007 she was invited to the White House to

offer the opening prayer at a meeting of Jewish

leaders with the President of the United States.

Rabbi Koppell served as a Chaplain (Colonel) in

the United States Army Reserve for 38 years.

Upon her ordination in 1981, she became the first

female Rabbi to serve in the U.S. Military. Rabbi

Koppell’s writings have been published in

numerous books and journals. She is a frequent

newspaper columnist and much sought after

speaker.

Please join Rabbi Koppell as she leads us in

Friday Night Shabbat Service on October 11,

Torah Study at 8:30 A.M. on October 12th

followed by Saturday Morning Shabbat Service.

At the Board Meeting on September 24, the Board

unanimously appointed Gary Pearlmutter to fill the

vacant Vice President of the Board position. Gary

has been a member of CLS since 1993. He

previously served on its Board from 2004 to 2016

and was Vice President and President for several

years during that time. He has helped rewrite the

bylaws on a couple of occasions and worked hard

to ensure congregational engagement and

transparency. He has a reputation for mediating

several challenges that the congregation faced

and tried to ensure that everybody’s voice was

heard. He has also served on many other boards,

including the Flagstaff Unified School District

Governing Board, Mountain English Spanish

Academy Charter School Board of Directors,

Accreditation Commission for Programs in

Hospitality Management, Jewish Family and

Children’s Service of Southern Arizona Board of

Directors, Jewish Community Relations Council,

American Council of Chief Defenders Executive

Committee and the Arizona Public Defender’s

Association Board of Directors. Gary has also

served as a mediator in the Superior Court of

Coconino County for over 20 years.

We welcome Gary's wealth of experience and

institutional knowledge to the Board of

Trustees.

The Board of a Trustees and

our families wish you and your

families a sweet and healthy

New Year! Shanah Tovah!

Shalom will meet on Tuesday, October 22nd,

at 6p.m. at the synagogue. Members of the

Congregation are welcome to attend. Please

advise Paul Cohen

if there are matters that you would like the

Board to consider or if you would like an

advance copy of the agenda for the meeting.

be asked to step out of the meeting should the

Board go into executive session to address

matters deemed to be of a confidential nature

by the Board, such as personnel issues or

matters dealing with specific members.

HOOD HAPPENINGS—BOB BRAUDY

On Monday, September 9, members of The

Hood met at The McMillan for our aperiodic

get together. We were joined by a delightful

young lady - Cambria Berbeco - whose

thoughts were focused on the chips at the

table. In all seriousness we did discuss the

work-in-progress Active Shooter/Attack and

Stop the Bleed programs that we are develop-

ing for the Flagstaff community in conjunction

with Karin Eberhard and Pastor Adam

Barnhart. More to follow.

For further information about the Congregation

Lev Shalom Brotherhood, please contact Bob

Braudy at [email protected] or 201-665-

0168 .

LEVTY NEWS

Lev Shalom Temple Youth ate pizza and planned activities at Will's

house last Sunday. This fall the teens plan to volunteer at the

Flagstaff Family Food Center for the "Harvest of Books" event and

have a Hanukkah party, inviting the larger teen Jewish community.

Several teens will be attending the NFTY SW Fall Kallah in mid-

October at Camp Stein. They will provide an update in the

November newsletter!

Please contact Nena Bloom at ([email protected] or

928-310-2252) for more information about our youth group.

CLS MEMBER SPOTLIGHT —JENN RUBEN

Get to know CLS members

and hear their stories!

Jennifer Ruben was raised by Billy

and Lainie Ruben to be a proud,

Jewish woman.

In high school, Jenn was B’nai Brith

Youth Organization’s (BBYO) regional

president for Kentucky, Indiana and

Ohio. She attended Jewish summer

camps, Israeli summers, and partici-

pated in The March of the Living. As a budding Zionist (at age 18),

Jenn “informed” her parents that she was joining the Israeli army.

Her parents “informed” her that she was going to college. In the

middle of the night, from her dorm room at University of

Wisconsin, Jenn enrolled in Marvah, the Israeli army program for

non-Israeli citizens. Jenn spent months being immersed in

Hebrew and learning army protocol, and then returned to the U.S.

with a rank and an open file in Israel.

Jenn graduated from UW-Madison with a degree in Social Welfare

and went on to Georgetown Law school. For the next 10 years,

Jenn lived in Brooklyn, New York, and worked as a special victim’s

prosecutor. Although her identity remained centered in Judaism,

Jenn drifted from the Jewish community. She moved to Arizona in

2009, and married fine artist, Dave Booth, who is not Jewish.

It was Jenn’s daughter, Miriam, then 5 years old, who brought

Jenn back to a synagogue. Miriam attended her cousin’s Bar

Mitzvah in California and asked “does Flagstaff have a syna-

gogue?” Jenn and Miriam started attending Lev Shalom regularly,

and have been members since 2017. Being a member of a syna-

gogue has become crucial to Jenn’s identity as a Jew, since it al-

lows her to feel connected to Jews all over the world, especially

through coordinated social action projects.

Jenn now serves on the Lev Shalom Board, and is working hard to

raise Miriam (and now her little brother, Wyatt) to be proud mem-

bers of the Jewish community.

SIMCHAT TORAH OCTOBER 21 AT 7PM

Rejoice in the sweetness of Shabbat and the love of Torah and

study. You are invited to join us for our Simchat Torah Hakafah

Celebration!

We will be rejoicing as we conclude the annual cycle of Torah

readings and begin a new cycle, while singing and waving our

flags.

Bring your family, friends, and dancing

shoes!

RELIGIOUS SCHOOL NEWS—SUSAN NICKERSON

L’ Shanah Tovah!

Both the Torah Tots and Religious School students ready themselves

every Sunday by reciting the Shema and Modeh Ani, and participate

in the giving of Tzedakah.

In September our Torah Tots learned the Hebrew words for their

body parts and family members along with counting numbers in

Hebrew.

As September closes, we will start the study of High Holidays with Rosh Hashanah. In October we will continue with the High Holiday ob-

servance of Yom Kippur, Harvest of Sukkot and the celebration of Simchat Torah.

This past month our Religious School students learned Hebrew letters Shin, Tav and Resh, along with counting to 10 in Hebrew. They

also learned the Hebrew words for their family members. As the month ends, they will expand their understanding of why and how we

observe Rosh Hashanah. In October their education continues with more High Holiday observances of Yom Kipper, the harvest of Sukkot

and Simchat Torah.

We all are looking for a blessed New Year. L’ Shanah Tovah to one

and all.

Registration is open all year. Please feel free to contact Mrs. Susan at

her email, [email protected] for further information about our

Youth Education program.
