Thank you to our event sponsors:

the Chamber supports: su-perior professional expe-rience, excellent customer service, timely schedules with a cost-effective bud-get, and, perhaps most importantly, the goal of exceeding customers’ ex-pectations.”

The above values are also shared and demon-strated by the Chamber’s honoree for Outstand-ing Business of the Year: Wushu Action Star Acad-emy and its fearless leader and owner Coach Jing Li.

Well known in the film industry, Ms. Li is a mar-tial arts expert and well re-spected stunt woman and stunt coach with credits that include Rush Hour 3, Priest, The Last Air-bender, and many more. While working on these films Ms. Li has collabo-rated with actors like Ni-cole Kidman, Jackie Chan, Jessica Chastain, Donnie Yen, and Mary J. Blige. Most recently, she trained actress Amber Heard for her role as Mera in the box office hit “Aquaman.”

In 2018, Ms. Li was awarded the Legendary Stunt Award at the 2018 Action on Film Inter-national Film Festival MEGAFest. The Legend-ary Stunt Award recog-nizes the best stunt pro-fessionals working in the action genre and this year it was awarded to eight individuals including Jing Li. This year Ms. Li was honored as one of Con-gresswoman Judy Chu’s 12 Women of the Year honoring local women who have contributed to the community.

“Every single honoree (was) selected through an exhaustive process, starting with a nomina-tion from their neighbors, friends, and family – the

people in their commu-nities who have benefited most directly from their service,” said Rep. Chu, “We received a flood of nominations … and to-day’s winners stood out not only because of their work, but because of the admiration from their neighbors and fellow citi-zens. I’m so proud of these role models and am hon-

ored to be recognizing them.”

When she is not training movie stars to be believable super-heroes, Ms. Li is head coach at Wushu Action Star Academy (9657 Las Tunas Drive, Temple City), a world class mar-tial arts training center providing instruction in Wushu and Taichi.

An athletic disci-

pline of physical culture and sports, Wushu imple-ments offensive and de-fensive movements, both bare-hand and with weap-ons training, in a very unique and dynamic fash-ion. Tai chi is a Chinese exercise system that uses slow, smooth body move-ments to achieve a state of relaxation of both body and mind. Training with Coach Li also develops fo-cus and discipline which

is an asset whether you are six years old or sixty.

Mr. Erenay and Wushu Action Star Academy will be joined by their fellow honorees at the Cham-ber’s annual gala at the Camellia Square shopping center (which was itself a past winner of the “Out-standing Business Beauti-ful” category awarded to that business which has contributed the most to beautify and physically

improve the Temple City business community.) This year Parklane Dental, the Hello Kitty-themed dental clinic on the corner of Las Tunas Drive and Camellia Avenue, will be recognized as “Outstand-ing Business Beautiful.”

Transtech Engineers and California American Water were announced as this year’s recipients of the Temple City Chamber of

Money MattersHealthcare. Retire-ment. Those may be two of the most stressful words in the English language today, especially when you include them both in the same sentence.

Health. Savings. Ac-count.

Those three words can help reduce the stress of retirement healthcare ex-penses. A Health Savings Account, or HSA, is a tax-advantaged account that can be opened by anyone who is enrolled in a high deductible health

Stay calm and open a Health Savings Account for health, tax benefitsplan (with a deductible of at least $1,350 for individ-uals or $2,700 for families for 2019). Typically, HSAs offer three significant tax benefits:

•Tax-freewithdrawals.If you use HSA savings to pay qualified medical ex-penses, the withdrawals are income tax free.

• Pre-tax (or tax-de-ductible) contributions. Contributions to HSAs are federally tax-deduct-ible up to certain limits. For 2019, the limits are $3,500 for a single person

and $7,000 for a family. If you’re age 55 or older, then you can save an addi-tional $1,000 a year in the account.

• Tax-deferred growth.Any interest earned in an HSA grows tax-deferred. Generally, HSA contribu-tions go into an account

at a bank, credit union, or other financial institution that is an HSA-approved custodian. However, those savings can also be invest-ed.

By allyson S. hellerWhen it comes time to administer a

living trust, the person designated as the trustee owes certain duties to the trust that he or she must always be aware of.

Perhaps the most fundamental duty that a trustee has is the duty of loyalty. At its core, the duty of loyalty means that the trustee has a responsibility to act solely in the interest of the trust beneficiaries. The trustee must refrain from engaging in transactions that personally benefit the trustee at the expense of the beneficiaries. Additionally, the trustee must be wary conflicts of interest. A conflict of interest often arises when the trustee is also a ben-eficiary of the trust.

All trustees have a duty to exercise the reasonable care, skill, and caution of a pru-dent person, in administering the trust in accordance with the requirements of the Probate Code.

Due to the broad implications of the duty of care, it is crucial that trustees un-derstand the requirements of trust admin-istration.

The trustee also has a duty to act impartially towards all beneficiaries of the trust and avoid showing favorit-ism to any one beneficiary.

Other duties include the duty to safeguard and pre-serve trust property, segregate trust assets, and account to beneficiaries.

As a fiduciary, the trustee must act with the highest standard of care in carrying out his or her duties in ad-ministering the trust. Trustees can get into trouble when they fail to fully understand what’s expected of them. If you have been named as a trustee of a trust, it is import-ant to consult with an experienced attorney to under-stand your role.

Allyson S. Heller is a licensed attorney at the Law Of-fices of Tony J. Tyre, ESQ, APC. For more information, please phone our office at 626-858-9378 or email [email protected].

2 p.m., meanwhile, the car show will feature nearly 50 antiques, street rods and classics on view.

Swimming pools are not a modern innovation. They have existed in many parts of the world since ancient times. The Ro-mans used them during the second century BC, for example, and in India, the Middle East, and else-where, archaeologists have unearthed pool structures more than a thousand years older than that.

Everyone enjoys the wonderful California beaches, however when it comes to swimming, the ocean is not the ideal water unlike the Med-iterranean and Aegean Coasts, for those of you who have travelled, where the calm sea is ideal. If you enjoy real swimming rather than body boarding or surfing in the Pacific Ocean, a pool is for you.

Adding a swimming pool to your backyard is a great idea for those who love to swim.

Consider the following when building a pool:

•Checkthelocalbuild-ing code before creating the plan. Find out the size and location of the pool you are allowed to build.

• Decide on how thepool is going to be use: for kids, an eating area, a bar,

Enjoy the cool blue of your own backyard poolwith lounge chairs, etc.

• Consider the direc-tion of the pool. Pick the best spot to maximize the sun and shade during the day.

•Decideonthesizeofthe pool by using chalk (if it is a hardscape) or with stick rope (if it is soil or grass) to outline a shape

on the ground. This is a great way to visualize the final look.

•Fromancientpoolstothe latest modern pool de-sign, the best shaped pool is a rectangle. It is condu-cive for swimming, espe-cially lap swimming.

•Consideraddingahottub or spa for relaxation.

• Consider an outsideshower to rinse off before and after swimming.

•  Fences and gatesmight be required if you have kids or pets.

Pools have existed in many parts of the world since ancient times. They can be built in many different settings and shapes to meet a variety of needs for homeowners. Check the local building code before creating your plan. Find out the size and location of the pool you are allowed to build.

As winter approaches, you may find yourself busy with children or grandchildren returning to school, work or volunteer efforts and various seasonal holiday planning.

During this hectic time of year, we can be easily tired and worn out. This may leave us unprotected against seasonal illnesses, especially influenza (the flu). It is im-portant to remember that even healthy people can get the flu. Everyone 6 months or older should get a flu vac-cine. This is especially applicable if you are pregnant or have a chronic condition like asthma, diabetes, CHF, or COPD.

In addition to getting your flu vaccine, your neigh-borhood HealthCarePartners-Temple City Clinic and

Okay, it’s one thing buy-ing a Shamwow or a bear-proof Safe Box Locker off an infomercial at 3 a.m. But do-it-yourself clear aligner orthodontics?

So, I went undercover. I applied for my own care. And I could get started for only $95.

I’ve provided Invisal-lign care since 2002; so, who needed another doc-tor? I was curious.

The Instagram pitch emphasized price and no

inconvenient visits to the dentist.

The direct-to-consum-er model proposed to mail me a kit and instructions for impression taking. I would “snail mail” back my results with some “sel-fies.”

After evaluating the returns, a “Licensed Or-thodontist” would devise a treatment plan and send me the clear tray aligners I’d use to begin my ortho-dontic care.

Invisalign care has come a long way since 2002.

And continued re-search and innovation have taken the Invisalign process and its provider’s knowledge to next level after next level. Direct su-pervision has always been a standard of care.

I was my mom’s care-giver for just about a decade. Supporting my mom taught me a little about what was (despite

best efforts) often missing in today’s healthcare; the “care” part. So, when the absence of personalized supervision is intention-al and part of a business plan, I’m resistant.

I sent in my application and admit I’m curious about the impression ma-terial I’ll get in the mail. Thing is, even though I’ve practiced dentistry for go-ing on 40 years, I’ve never

taken my own impression. And guess what, I suck at taking selfies.

Looks like I’ll get my kit in just a few weeks. And all I’ll miss is stuff like an oral cancer exam, an airway evaluation (as part of a complete dental health examination) and a conversation …where I’d do most of the sharing and my dentist would hopeful-ly do most of the listening. What could go wrong?

New Member Profile Mary And Martha’s Home For The Elderly is home away from home for your loved ones

Martha Zeledon-Lopez has lived in Temple City for the last 40 years. A retired court interpreter with the Los Angeles court sys-tem, Zeledon-Lopez’s dream for creating a home for the elderly be-gan 11 years ago when her elderly mother was in need of care. “My mother was of a sound mind and not bed-ridden, but still in need of assistance with her activities of daily living,” said Zeledon-Lopez. “My siblings and I all had full time jobs and were not able to give her the assistance she needed.”

As she searched for a facility that would have a home atmo-sphere, she discovered that most facilities seemed to cater to el-derly residents with dementia or more physical limitations than her mother. Unable to find a home that met her mother’s needs, Zele-don-Lopez and her sister Julia took time off work to care for their mother.

“I realized then,” said Martha, “that there was a great need for facilities for older people where they could thrive, be joyful, and live meaningful lives.” She went back to school to build on her Psychology BS degree and earned a Masters in Gerontology (the study of aging).

“I am excited to offer my knowledge and expertise to fami-lies seeking similar care and to the San Gabriel Valley elder commu-nity.”

Opening Oct. 1, Mary And Martha’s Home For The Elderly is a four-bed residential care facil-

ity with a trained staff on-site 24 hours a day.*

Their formal education in Ger-ontology, Psychology, Teaching, Theology, and Spirituality has taught Zeledon-Lopez and her staff that the need to socialize, to have a purpose, to be respected, and to continue to grow is never ending.

With this in mind, the facility offers daily activities to enhance physical, cognitive, emotion-al, and spiritual assistance with: personal care needs, medication management, housekeeping ser-vice, three (3) nutritional meals, snacks between meals, personal laundry and linen services, and ongoing monitoring of health care needs.

Selecting a residence for your-self or your loved one is one of the most important decisions you can make, so feel free to vis-it and see the place for yourself. “Let’s talk about your needs,” said Zeledon-Lopez. “We trust that once you visit us, you will be very pleased.”

*Note: This facility is not per-mitted to provide 24-hour skilled nursing care per Title 22 H&S Code and CCR.

Here at Lotus House restaurant, host of the Temple City Chamber of Commerce’s 94th Annual Gala Dinner last year, a popular crowd favorite is Banh Canh Cua Dac Biet or, as the family run restaurant calls it: Slippery Noo-dle Crab Special, Ultimate Vietnamese Noodles for slurp-

ing. Banh Canh is the only Vietnamese noodle soup that one eats with a spoon because the noodles are round and tend to slip from chop sticks and spoons.

They are very similar to Japanese udon noodles. Cua is the Vietnamese word for crab, so together Banh Canh Cua is “noodles with crab.”
