Call for Applications: Transdisciplinary Research for Pathways to Sustainability

Future Earth and the Belmont Forum are pleased to announce the launch of the joint Collaborative Research Action (CRA) on the theme of Pathways to Sustainability. The call launches on 23 July 2020 with a closing date 31 October 2020.

Page 7: October 2020 Blue, Green Economy and Climate Change ... 2020... · Web viewCall for Papers on Special Issue: Climate Change and Adaptation of Life in the Polar Regions – deadline

To help provide a science base for achieving sustainability goals, the Belmont Forum and partners are supporting 1-2 years of collaborative research networking that focuses on integrated qualitative and quantitative approaches to develop Earth-system-based transformation pathways for sustainable development. The initiative invites its participants to consider all important interactions among the sustainable development goals, and address cross-cutting issues among at a minimum three or more explicitly identified Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Projects are free to prioritize the interactions to be explored, based on their own local, national, regional, or global context as long as they address the Belmont Challenge providing knowledge for understanding, mitigating, and adapting to global environmental change. Participants are required to use a transdisciplinary approach to engage society at large. This approach will ensure ownership of science outcomes as well as relevance to both policy-makers and decision-makers. Additionally, this approach should lead to social acceptance and empowerment.

The CRA will support inclusive collaboration across different sectors and across expertise, including, but not limited to natural and social sciences, humanities, engineering, traditional and local knowledge. In recognition of limited mobility, we advise projects to utilize or innovate virtual collaborations using good practices for inclusion in recognition of the digital divide. Awards will foster continued relationships and build novel networks with stakeholders for this CRA. The definition of stakeholder here is exceptionally diverse and is not limited to academics, government agencies, funder and development partners, the private sector, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), traditional authorities (royalty/chiefs), district assemblies, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), religious organizations, think tanks, the media, or parliamentary committees.

The first cycle of funding for this CRA will be directed towards designing cross-cutting networks and competitive activities to build the community, mobilize capacity, bring together existing focused projects, develop networks focused on stakeholder mapping, engagement of new stakeholders, and evaluation of existing efforts. The aim is to build communities to be in a position of developing integrative sustainability pathways responding to society’s needs. In the coming years, future funding opportunities could expand research on sustainability pathways and SDG interlinkages.

ELIGIBILITY CRITERIAThe development of research networking consortia supported financially by at least three participating partner agencies established in three different countries is a key criterion. Researchers from countries not represented by any of the partner agencies can participate in the research project at their own expense.

Transdisciplinarity of the research consortia and the active engagement of involved stakeholders in the research and innovation contents is a key criterion and should be clearly demonstrated in the application. Given the complexity and scope of the challenges, research consortia must be truly transdisciplinary, including academic researchers from: a) social sciences/humanities and b) natural sciences/technology and c) stakeholders using a co-design, co-development and co-implementation approach.

This call aims to support activities spanning no more than 2 years.

Postponement of SAMSS2020

The conference is formally hosted by UKZN and the KZN Sharks Board, on behalf of SANCOR (South African Network for Coastal and Oceanic Research)

The Southern African Marine Science Symposium (SAMSS) that was scheduled for 6-9 July 2020 in Durban has been postponed. Please refer to the note below from the Local Organising Committee (LOC).

______________________________________________________________

SAMSS2020 postponed

SAMSS2020 is postponed to July 2021 due to the circumstances connected to the coronavirus COVID19. The current conditions are not conducive for the organisation of the conference, nor will all delegates be able to find the necessary time for preparation amidst current and possible future disruptions. The Local Organising Committee (LOC) therefore opted to postpone.

Since delegates might decide to change their abstracts, the LOC has decided to start the abstract submission anew. We aim to open abstract submission in September 2020, and close submission mid-January 2021. All dates will be announced in due course.

In the meanwhile, the LOC extends their thanks to each person who contributed to the 491 abstracts that were submitted. We hope that you will be able to join us in 2021!

Wilson White of Oregon State UniversityDate/Time: Wednesday, October 14, 10am US EDT/7am US PDT/2 pm UTCDescription: The interconnectedness of the ocean is one of its defining characteristics. This ability of species and processes to move and flow from place-to-place, called ecological connectivity, is increasingly recognized as a key aspect of successful marine conservation. Two recent reports highlight the importance of both protecting and leveraging connectivity conservation for successful MPA management. Both the IUCN “Guidelines for conserving connectivity through ecological networks and corridors” and the National MPA Center brief “Ecological Connectivity for Marine

Australian Research Council -Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA)

The Discovery Early Career Researcher Award (DECRA) scheme is a separate element of the Discovery Program. The DECRA scheme will provide more focused support for researchers and create more opportunities for early-career researchers in both teaching and research, and research-only positions.Researchers may be eligible to apply if they have been awarded a PhD within five years or, commensurate with a period of significant career interruption, have been awarded a PhD within eight years of the closing time of submission of Proposals.

Australian Research Council - Discovery Projects

The Discovery Projects scheme provides funding for research projects that can be undertaken by individual researchers or research teams. The objectives of the Discovery Projects scheme are to:

support excellent basic and applied research by individuals and teams enhance the scale and focus of research in the National Research Priorities expand Australia’s knowledge base and research capability encourage research and research training in high-quality research environments enhance international collaboration in research foster the international competitiveness of Australian research.

Australian Research Council - Linkage Projects

The Linkage Projects scheme provides funding to Eligible Organisations to support research and development (R&D) projects which are collaborative between higher education researchers and other parts of the national innovation system, which are undertaken to acquire new knowledge, and which involve risk or innovation.

Proposals for funding under the Linkage Projects scheme must include at least one Partner Organisation. The Partner Organisation must make a contribution in cash and/or in kind to the project. The combined Partner Organisation contributions for a Proposal (i.e. the total of the cash and in-kind contributions of the Partner Organisations) must at least match the total funding requested from the ARC.

Leibniz-DAAD Fellowship Program

Launched in 2011, the Leibniz-DAAD Research Fellowship offers highly-qualified recent foreign postdocs the opportunity to conduct special research at institutes of the Leibniz Association in Germany. Fellows can do their research at one of the Leibniz-Institutes which are covered in the following (five) sections: Humanities and Educational Research; Economics, Social and Spatial Sciences; Life Sciences; Mathematics, Natural Sciences, Engineering; and Environmental Research. Grants for postdocs can be awarded for up to a maximum of 12 months.

Harvard's extraordinary resources to tackle complex environmental problems. The Environmental Fellows will work for two years with Harvard faculty members in any school or department to create new knowledge while also strengthening connections across the University's academic disciplines. The Center will organize a co-curricular program to ensure that the fellows get to know each other and each other's work. All fellows will attend biweekly dinners with their colleagues, faculty members, and guests.

Commonwealth Academic Fellowships

Commonwealth Academic Fellowships support mid-career academics from developing countries to spend three months at a UK university. These fellowships are funded by the UK Department for International Development (DFID).

The Columbia Science Fellows Programme

With the creation of Frontiers of Science, a new postdoctoral position was established for young scientists interested in developing their skills in both research and science education. These "Science Fellows" are instrumental in developing new course material. However, Science Fellow positions are not purely teaching appointments. Because one goal of Frontiers of Science is to expose students to the way scientists work and think, Science Fellows actively pursue their own research projects within their department. Yes, being a Science Fellow can certainly make for a busy life, but if you love to teach and don't want to give up research, this may be the perfect position for you!

Natural Environmental Research Council   Research Fellowship Scheme

The new scheme is designed to develop scientific leadership among the most promising early-career environmental scientists, by giving all Fellows five years' support, which will allow them sufficient time to develop their research programmes, and to establish international recognition.

As part of this scheme, NERC will expand its fellowship networking and training activities, working with host institutions, to support the development of future leaders in NERC science.
