The success of Calgary as a whole relies on thriving communities:

Communities as places where people can live now, regardless of income or stage of life. Communities that appeal to growing youth and provide the right amenities for a mature and aging population. Communities that attract new people and investments to our city.

Our great communities are growing more inclusive, with more housing options. They are growing more environmentally responsible, as more people live closer to amenities and services.

Calgarians needs are changing - that should be reflected in the community we live in now and the one we want to live in years from now.

Differences between the Calgary Parkland Community Association and Park 96

Do you know the difference between Calgary Parkland Community Association and Park 96? Parkland is fortunate to have two associations that have independent boards and mandates, that work for the benefit of all Parkland residents. To most community members, they see the Parkland Community Hall at the intersection of Parkland Blvd and ParkValley Drive, and the fenced in area on the other side, and believe they are the same entity. They operate independently, and the following describes how they came to be for the benefit of Parkland residents:

Park 96 is a parcel of land that was set aside and sold to the residents of Parkland by developer Keith Homes in 1975 to create a private gated recreational area for the residents of Parkland. Park 96 is governed by a non-profit volunteer board and owned by the property owners of Parkland. A mandatory annual tax of $200 is levied per household to maintain and operate the park and its events. The fees collected are used to staff, maintain, and improve the facilities inside the park, and include a water park, tennis and basketball courts, playgrounds, skating rinks, cook houses, disc golf, and a community building. Some of the annual events that occur at Park 96 are Summerfest, Movie in the Park, Summer Sunday Music, and skating events. The hall

and cookhouse facilities within Park 96 are available for rental, however, rentals are limited to Parkland residents only. The website and contacts for Park 96 are www.park96.com and [email protected].

The Calgary Parkland Community Association (CPCA), like many community associations in Calgary, represents the residents of Parkland at the neighbourhood and municipal level. The CPCA operates and maintains the community Hall on land leased from the City of Calgary. The CPCA also has a volunteer board which is responsible for directing operations of the facilities and programs offered by the community association. The CPCA is funded by facility rentals, an annual optional $25 community membership, the AGLC Casino, and grants through various civic and provincial agencies. However, unlike Park 96, the CPCA can rent the hall facilities to any individual or group from anywhere in the city and is not restricted to Parkland residents. Some of the programs and events that the CPCA administers and supports are the Community Garden, Canada Day Breakfast, Winterfest, Soccer Programs, Halloween party, Parkland Cares, and various beautification projects, such as the mural mosaic at the hall and the Boulevard planters. The website and contacts for Calgary Parkland Community Association is www.parklandyyc.ca and [email protected].

Parkland is not unique to have multiple associations working for the benefit of the community. Neighbouring communities like Lake Bonavista similarly have the Lake Bonavista Community association and a separate Lake Bonavista Homeowners Association. Parkland has the bonus of being surrounded by Fish Creek Provincial Park. We encourage all Parkland residents to take advantage of events and programs offered by Park 96 and CPCA, and to support these associations by purchasing a CPCA membership and volunteering your time to help enrich your community. Both Park 96 and CPCA welcome your questions and suggestions about the facilities and programs that are offered.

Did you know?Contributed by the City of CalgaryInterested in more information on any City of Calgary bylaws? Go to the Bylaws by Topic page: https://www.calgary.ca/csps/abs/bylaws-by-topic/bylaws-by-topic.html.

Bylaws Related to Snow And IceCalgary winters are safer and more manageable when everyone pitches in to clear snow and ice. While The City does its part clearing roads, designated pathways, side-walks, and other high-use public areas, section 67 of the Street Bylaw requires Calgary property owners to:

•Remove snow and ice – down to bare surface – from public sidewalks bordering their private property within 24 hours of a snowfall ending. Owners of rental properties are responsible for arranging for snow and ice removal when they reside elsewhere. •Remove a minimum width of 1.5 meters of snow and

ice – down to bare surface – from a public pathway bordering their property, also within 24 hours of a snowfall ending. Applicable pathways are those that run parallel and adjacent to a street, with or without separation between the pathway and street (e.g., a grass boulevard). •Pile snow from their private driveway or walkway on

their own property (e.g., front lawn). Snow from a pub-lic sidewalk or pathway may be shoveled onto another public property, such as a road.

See below for further details and penalty information or download the Street Bylaw and refer to Section 67 for the full set of regulations for snow and ice control.

Noise exemption Many people rely on motorized equipment to clear snow, including City crews. Noise restrictions for using such equipment are lifted for 48 hours after a snowfall ends to clear walkways for safety and accessibility. This means anyone is allowed to operate a motorized snow clearing device (including leaf and snow blowers) — at any time of day/night — during that 48-hour window to remove snow and ice. Outside of that window, night use is not permitted. For more information, download the Community Standards Bylaw and refer to sections 31.1(e) and 31.1(2).

Penalties for failing to remove snow Property owners/occupants who do not comply with the bylaw and subsequent notices issued by The City may be subject to:

•An invoice to the property owner from The City for clearing the sidewalk on their behalf. The cost is a min-imum flat rate of $150 plus GST and an administration fee. The amount will be added to the owner’s annual property tax if not paid by the invoice due date. •A fine of $250 to the property occupant for a first of-

fence. Repeat offenders may be fined $500 for a second offence, and $750 for a third offence and each offence thereafter within a 12-month period. Tickets issued to repeat offenders may require a court appearance. Un-paid fines will be collected by Alberta Registry Service at the time of license or registration renewal.

Reporting problem properties Report a sidewalk not cleared within 24 hours of a snowfall ending; include address or location details. To report other snow/ice issues, please visit our snow and ice concerns page.

How to be a Snow AngelIndividual volunteers

To be a Snow Angel, all you have to do is adopt a neigh-bour’s sidewalk and keep it clear when it snows. Watch for elderly people or individuals with mobility issues in your neighbourhood who could use help removing snow and lend them a hand.

1. Requesting a certificate online. Please include your home address in the first information box that ap-pears. We’ll mail you the certificate to give to them.

2. Downloading and printing the Snow Angel certificate to give to your Snow Angel.

3. Calling 311 to request a certificate for your Snow Angel.4. Sharing your Snow Angel story on social media using

MENTAL HEALTH MOMENT

Shopping for A Therapeutic Connectionby Nancy Bergeron, RPsych | [email protected]

Choosing a therapist is no easy task. There are thousands of psychologists, counsellors, and therapists in Alberta alone! Selecting a professional with the training, experience, and personality that fits your needs can be daunting. You will be forming a relationship with this person, whether it’s for three sessions or a lifetime. A great therapist is just like your family doctor…they are there for you through the many transitions and challenges of your life. It’s important you feel comfortable and safe.

The factors ranked as most important in making therapy successful are, the therapist’s listening skills (63%), the therapist’s personality (52%), the personal connection with the therapist (45%), the therapist’s being active in the session (38%), and the cost (38%). As you can see, it’s important to choose a therapist that’s a good fit. It’s something we therapists learn early in our training. It’s all about the relationship. A clinician with a wall full of credentials and 25 years of experience may seem to have the edge on paper, but if the first-year therapist has a better connection with you, they may provide a better outcome. Referrals, degrees, and demographics matter, but the quality of the relationship seems to matter more.

Here are a few things to consider in your search:

Referral: In order to develop a therapeutic relationship (which is crucial in any type of therapy), you have to feel some ease of rapport with the therapist and feel comfortable opening up to us. Asking friends, family members, and colleagues about their experiences with their therapists is an excellent way of getting a sense of different types of therapy and therapists. Have any of your connections gone into therapy and had a positive change as a result? These are the people to ask. Although it’s not always easy to find the right therapist for you, referrals from people you trust are a much better basis for choosing a therapist than who has the lowest fees.

Age/Ethnicity/Gender/Sexual Orientation/Religion: In general, people tend to choose therapists similar to

themselves in these areas, with the belief that someone with shared demographics or shared experience will better understand them. Have they walked a mile in your shoes? A lot of the time knowing that we have experienced or overcome a similar challenge may feel more comfortable for you, like we get it. That’s worth thinking about.

Cost: Fees for therapy vary widely, from free (or nearly free) at some community agencies to $250+ in private practices. Great therapy is an investment of not only money, but time and emotional energy, so it’s important for you to honestly assess your resources. Therapy can be expensive, but consider how much money you would spend on other things like, shopping for clothes, dining out, nail and hair salons, the latest cell phone, accessories, and entertainment to help us feel better, but don’t produce a lasting change.

Insurance: Licensed therapists are registered with major employee health insurance providers which cover most, if not all, therapy fees to a set limit per year. You can check with your insurance provider to determine how payment works.

Location/Availability: How flexible is your time? Some therapists offer evening and weekend appointments, but these tend to fill up quickly. How close to your workplace or home is the therapist or clinic located?

Degree: Many paths lead to careers in psychotherapy. Psychiatrists have an M.D., so they tend to focus on the biological elements of behavior and may or may not do psychotherapy. Psychologists have a Ph.D., Psy.D., or a Masters in Counselling Psychology, typically conduct psychotherapy, and may have training in psychological assessment. Clinicians with a Masters in Social Work provide therapy with an emphasis on the client’s social system. Marriage and Family Therapists or Marriage, Family, and Child Counsellors, hold a master’s degree and specialize in relationship issues. Licensed Professional Counsellors have master’s degrees and conduct general therapy as well. Again, cost and areas of focus vary widely among these professionals.

Experience: Clinicians with years of experience have seen and treated many people with a variety of issues; they know what has helped and what hasn’t. Newer clinicians are fresher in their training and are potentially

•January 29, February 5, February 12, February 19. •All classes go from 2:00 to 4:00pm.•The cost is $60 for those who do not hold a

community membership and $50 for those who do. •All materials required are included in the cost of

equipped with the latest techniques and theories. More experience usually means higher fee.

Therapeutic Orientation: Also called treatment modalities or theoretical orientations, influence how we understand and treat your problem - even how we relate to you. There are hundreds of therapeutic orientations, but they tend to fall in a few major groups that help explain your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Some therapists use several theories, based on what their client’s needs are, which is referred to as an integrative approach.

Expertise: Through training and/or experience, most of us focus on a few areas of clinical interest or specialty. Some of us have written books on the topic, published articles, spoken at conferences, or received special training in the special areas.

Call your three top choices and arrange for an initial consultation - most of us will offer a complimentary consultation. It’s okay to let us know you’re consulting several therapists. The consultation is not meant to go into the details of your challenge, but instead, to interview the potential therapist and get a feel for our expertise and personality. When you consult, ask us to elaborate on anything you’re not clear about. The therapist should be able to communicate their experience, style, and approach in a way that makes sense to you.

The research is pretty clear; the therapist’s ability to listen, our personality, and the connection you feel with us is vital for successful therapy. Your subjective experience of us is just as important as our credentials. Whom did you feel the strongest connection with? If you don’t find a match in your top three, please continue your search. We want the best fit for us both.

PARKLAND CARESParkland Cares is a community-based organization of families and neighbours committed to helping others.

Many thanks once again for the generous support of our Grocery Gift Card Collection in December. We collected $1,420 in cards. Amazing! These cards were distributed to families in need with children attending Wilma Han-sen Jr. High and Deer Run Elementary schools.

Due to ongoing restrictions, we have limited volun-teer opportunities available at the moment. Here are a couple you could look into in our community:

Volunteer opportunity: Deer Park United Church Thurs-day Food Relief Hamper sorting and delivery. On-going. Please sign up online at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050f4aafab2da4fd0-dpuc2.

Volunteers still needed at the Calgary Food Bank: On going. https://www.calgaryfoodbank.com/volunteer/.

Please contact us if you have ideas for ways to encour-age strong community connections, or if you would like to help with any of our planned events.

We are hoping our next planning meeting will be Tues-day February 9 at 7:15 pm at Park 96 or by Zoom, we would love to see you there.

February is the most unique month in our entire calendar. Along with being the shortest month out of all twelve, it is also the most difficult to spell. In all of the English language, February repeatedly makes it to the top of the list for misspelled words. Its a tricky one!

1. Be Outside. Take at least 20 minutes a day to be outside. Benefits: fresh air (cleans the blood), Sunshine (Vitamin D).

2. Filter your Tap Water. Water straight from the tap contains stuff that is foreign to the body, which means your body has to filter these things out before the water is deemed available to our cells. Help ease the cleansing weight off your system by filtering as best as you can beforehand.

3. Eat Organic. Feed our body food that’s free of pesticides, antibiotics, and hormones. Food that has been genetically modified isn’t easily recognized by our body system, resulting in unfriendly by-products during digestion and assimilation. When we eliminate the cause of system strain, the vital force ultimately becomes stronger.

4. Exercise. Get your blood pumping and activate your sweat glands. Exercise eliminates toxins and balances hormones. Start slow and gentle. Work up to longer sessions of combined cardio and weight resistant activity. Bodies must be moved in order to function properly.

5. Use Food as vitamins/minerals and stick to what’s in season within your region.

6. Deep Breathing. Take ten extremely deep breaths when you feel tired, frustrated, sad, hungry, angry, annoyed, emotional, foggy, dizzy, or numb. Oxygen enlivens your blood, which enlivens you.

7. Flex your brain. Research what you want to understand further, investigate opinions opposite yours to gain perspective, journal, paint, play music, read science fiction. Bend your reality even just a bit, it will make space and clear clutter within the mind.

8. Socialize. Laugh, sing, dance, tell stories, and play games (within your cohort).

9. Eliminate immunity inhibitors. Replace white sugar with honey or syrup and save gluten for special occasions.

10. Be self aware. Don’t ignore the gut feeling, it’s your intuition and your instinct.

YOUR CITY OF CALGARY

Mental Health: Emotional PreparednessIt is important to consider emotional preparedness as part of your household emergency action plan. Disasters can impact everyone differently, but most people feel an element of disruption and stress. The high volume of information and concerns during a disaster can be overwhelming, and having a few emotional tools identified in advance will help you remain calm in this type of environment. When you take care of yourself first, you are able to support your family.

What does stress look like? If someone in your family is having on-going trouble coping with their emotions or is experiencing symptoms of stress, which could include, problems with sleep, separation anxiety, requiring consistent reassurance, increased substance use, shows less interest in their friends, does repetitive behaviours, such as excessive hand washing, contact your healthcare professional for help.

Make a Plan – To understand your and your loved one’s ability to be resilient before an emergency:•Think about how you/they cope with stress.•Identify what personal things make you/them feel better.•What healthy actions do you/they do to decompress after a stressful

experience?•What do you/they do to recognize or support loved ones with similar

feelings?

Emotional Preparedness during an Emergency: •Continue to get timely and accurate information from credible sources.

Misinformation can be dangerous during an emergency.•Try and maintain your daily routine.•Focus on the positive and do something you enjoy.•Get rest, eat nutritional food, and drink plenty of water.•Recognize your own feelings. Be mindful, pay attention to your thoughts,

feelings, and body sensations. This can help identify if you are feeling anxious or stressed. Identify actions that can help you feel calm. •Spend time with family and friends. •Find different ways to stay connected with family if you are away from them. •Find comfort in your spiritual and personal beliefs.

Staying Connected – connections with others is critical to increase resilience after emergencies:•Identify who is in your or your family’s network.•Identify who you/they typically turn to when you/they are feeling stressed.•Who do you/they consider to be in your/their community?•Identify key contact lists for your household and how you will contact them.

Hello, Ward 14.

We are nearing the end of winter, and although we may still be in the grips of the cold weather, we are headed for a spring filled with more hope than the last. I have prepared some information you may find useful for this month (not that I don’t always try to be useful). You will find the full version of this column at calgary.ca/ward14newsletter.

2021 Property AssessmentsI mentioned this last month, but as I do every year, I will mention it a second time at least. Reviewing your property assessment is a habit that you should get into. You have the right to ensure that it is accurate, fair, and equitable. Visit calgary.ca/ward14newsletter for a detailed summary of what you need to do.

Help protect your water lines from freezing this winterEvery winter some Calgarians experience freezing service lines, water pipes, and water outages. You can find some tips on how to prevent this at calgary.ca/ward14newsletter.

Mental Health: Emotional PreparednessI have touched on the topic of emergency preparedness on a few occasions in this column because I feel it is important. On that note, one of the many things 2020 taught us is that mental health is very important too. You can visit calgary.ca/ward14newsletter for some helpful tips, courtesy of Alberta Health Services, on how to mentally cope with an emergency.

Feel free to contact me any time, and don’t forget to visit calgary.ca/ward14newsletter for the full version of this column. The best way to contact me is by visiting calgary.ca/contactward14.

Without question, February is set to look markedly different from the past. Just one year ago, life seemed relatively normal as we began to receive reports of the “Coronavirus” from around the world, while it still seemed distant and surreal. So much has changed, but in many ways, we have been reminded of what is most important - family, friends, and relationships. Family Day and Valentine’s Day are reminders of the significance of love and family togetherness. Just “being” with those we love has now become a virtual experience, as we continue to protect those most at risk. As we drive forward with vaccine roll out, please work with us in support of protecting front-line workers in Health, Seniors Care, and in “high-touch” retail and service industries; and getting them back to work! As newsletters must be written a month in advance, my apologies for any inaccuracies, while recent updates can be found on social media, or you may contact my office to sign up for my e-newsletter or advisories.

As promised, and in reflection of my recently established Aviation Council, I’ll continue with CFB Cold Lake, or “4Wing” history. 1960’s operations centered on training crews for all weather flying. In 1962 the CF-104 Starfighter arrived, shifting focus to Canada’s NATO commitment. In 1968, Canada’s military evolved when the RCAF merged with the Royal Canadian Navy and Army to form the unified Canadian Forces. As a result, the RCAF Station became CFB Cold Lake, falling under Air Defense Command (ADC). The change was significant in raising the profile of CFB Cold Lake on the world stage. In 1975, all Canadian military aviation merged under one name – Air Command (AC). AC, now RCAF (Royal Canadian Air Force after it reverted back to its historical name in 2011) is partnered with the United States Air Force to protect our regional/continental airspace under the umbrella organization of NORAD (North American Aerospace Defence Command). 4Wing Cold Lake is the busiest fighter base in Canada and has earned the title of “home of the fighter pilot”. Varied geographical terrain, northern climate, and almost 1.17- million-hectare unrestricted air weapons range equipped with state-of-the-art technology make 4Wing a coveted training facility for fighter pilots from around the world. The CFB Cold Lake focus of people, leadership, innovation, and technology continues to this day. More CFB “tails” coming next month!

While we do not know the status of COVID related restrictions at time of writing, I would continue to encourage you to be kind and courteous in your interactions with one another. A smile, a nod of encouragement, a hand-written note, a surprise at the door all goes a long way in letting others know they are not alone.

With our shared prayers for a better year ahead, please do keep in touch (via email or phone). Thank you for your feedback and support!
