OCTOBER 22 - 28, 2015 THE VOICE 21 Cover story BY SAMANTHA REA S HE made her mark on the 80s pop scene with her hits So Macho and Toy Boy. Today, Sinitta is best-known as Simon Cowell’s go-to girl, making occasional appearances on his Saturday night TV staple The X Factor. Since her early days as a pop sensation, Sinitta has carved out a career in reality television, competing on shows including Dancing on Ice, I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here and The Jump. A well-known TV personality, it’s perhaps no wonder she was invited to pres- ent an award at the recent National Reality TV Awards, which is where Life & Style caught up with her. At age 51, Sinitta looks stun- ning – she’s in better shape than women decades her junior. She reveals that she’s launch- ing a website that focuses on health, fitness and beauty. “It’s called how to look 51 forever – apparently,” she jokes. In actual fact, her website opts for the more obvious name – Sinitta.com – and visitors to the lifestyle site are invited to: “Imagine a world where you feel and look twenty years younger.” Hearing this proposition from anyone else might leave you feeling dubious. But having seen Sinitta face-to-face – and in unflattering lighting – her flawless looks really do defy her years. Asked about her involvement in this year’s X Factor, Sinitta says she’s excited about men- toring the talent and doing the live shows, which start on October 31. “I like hearing the voices live for the first time – that’s when you know how it’s going to pan out! When [the contestants] are on The X Factor stage, that’s when it really starts for me.” Of the show’s Six Chair Challenge – the round where contestants have to battle it out for a place in one of the six hot seats – Sinitta says it’s tough to watch. “It’s bring your tissues, straightjackets and tranquilisers – it’s rough,” she laughs. “I went to one of the shows and after- wards I was not a happy bunny – it took me days to recover!” She continues: “It’s brutal because they’re all so good at this stage. To be in a chair one minute, thinking you’re through, then getting flicked off – it’s too much!” On the plus side, the star thinks this round could be what X Factor needs to beat the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing in the ratings – something that Sinitta claims is important to Cowell. “Simon likes to be number one – at everything. He can’t even play a game of Scrabble. If he doesn’t win, the table goes over!” With reports claiming that Sinitta has criticised the appointment of Radio One DJ Nick Grimshaw as an X Factor judge, would she have taken the role herself? “If Simon asked me nicely,” she says. “But there are times I’m happy I’m not a judge because I’m far too nice – so much nicer than Simon!” Ask her about other changes to the show and she says: “I wasn’t really happy, but then I’m quite sentimental. As much as I was grumpy about [former host] Dermot [O’Leary] going, I’ve loved seeing [new presen- ters] Olly [Murs] and Caroline [Flack]. And I miss [former judge] Mel [Brown], but I love [new judge] Rita [Ora], so it’s bittersweet for me.” Reflecting on her experience in the world of reality TV, she says: “I’ve done the jungle, I’ve done ice skating, I’ve done The Jump – I’m now one of the UK’s top 24 ski jumpers,” she laughs, before adding: “That’s just because there aren’t many! “If you think about it, I’m like the black, female Forrest Gump, because I can say that I was taught to ice skate by Torvill and Dean, taught to ski by Olympic champions and taught to ski- jump by Eddie the Eagle! It’s great – my grandchildren are going to think I’m lying!” Visit Sinitta’s lifestyle website at www.sinitta.com UK star Sinitta on The X Factor, Simon Cowell’s competitive streak and being the ‘black Forrest Gump’ of reality TV MUSIC NEWS ESKA NOMINATED FOR MERCURY MUSIC PRIZE CONGRATS to UK songstress Eska (right), whose debut album has been nomi- nated for the 2015 Mercury Prize.
