OCTOBER 24, 2021/ 24 DE OCTUBRE 2021

2 OCTOBER 24, 2021/ 24 DE OCTUBRE 2021

FROM OUR PASTOR, FR, PATRICK REBEL

In the first reading for last Sunday from the Book of Isaiah, the author foretells of a Suffering Servant who wins forgiveness and healing for the world. The title Servant is believed to refer to Israel. The Servant gives his life as an offering for sin. The will of the Lord will be accomplished through the Servant. Though the Servant was tormented, killed and buried in a grave among the wicked, God is pleased with him. The Servant is given honors and rewards as a result of the rejection and suffering he experienced. The suffering of the Servant leads to the justification of many. The Servant surrenders his life as an offering for the sins of others. Through hardship and suffering, the Servant took on the guilt of many. This Servant is exalted by the Lord because he has done God’s saving will. By the light of heaven, this Servant will be a witness in the lives of those who come after him. They will be affected by the sacrifices He made. His life cannot be measured by the limits of this world. His life is measured by the timeless standards of heaven. We can see in the Gospel for last Sunday that Jesus is that Suffering Servant of whom Isaiah has prophesied. Jesus has predicted that His suffering, death and resurrection are quickly coming. However, the apostles totally misunderstand what Jesus is telling them. While Jesus is telling them about His suffering death and resurrection, James and John request places of honor when Jesus comes into His glory. Jesus asks them if they truly understand what they are asking. Ironically, they will undergo a similar type of suffering. They have no idea that Jesus is trying to tell them about His cross and suffering. Jesus then asks James and John if they can drink the cup and undergo the Baptism. Again they misunderstand what the Lord is asking. He is asking them, if they too can endure the same type of suffering that He will encounter. The other 10 Apostles become indignant at James and John. Jesus then tells the Apostles that true discipleship is not about getting seats of honor or seeking glory. True discipleship is about serving others and giving one’s life for the ransom of many. In other words, discipleship is about imitating Our Lord. Glory and honor must be rooted in service. We are not here to be served but to serve the needs of others. In the reading from Hebrews last week, the author tells us that we can turn to Jesus to guide us in being true disciples. Being human, Jesus knows what it is liked to be tested because he was fully human and fully divine. Being the Son of God, Jesus can accomplish great things for us. Jesus can also sympathize with us in our struggles. Jesus is now glorified in His humanity. He has entered into heaven. He can also intercede with the Father. We now have confidence to seek God’s mercy and grace. In conclusion, we are called to follow Jesus with an attitude of service for others. Even though our society values success, fame and wealth; followers of Jesus are asked to serve others. In our celebration of the Eucharist, we acknowledge our dependence on God and each other. The end result in following the example of Christ will lead us to eternal life.

DEACON FRED LAPIANA

A Message In A Bottle

Blessed are the poor in Spirit for theirs is the Kingdom of God. Bartimaeus must have been known by the residents outside Jericho for being blind and always begging for money in order to survive. He had probably lost his pride long ago. He survived by donations given to him out of pity for his condition. No one took him in or cared for him except for the coin thrown his way. He was looked upon as a burden to his community.

He probably heard about Jesus through the talk on the street. Very popular and important. As Jesus passed by, Bartimaeus shouted… “Jesus have pity on me!” As the crowd tried to hush him up he shouted the louder. Was he expecting coin as the others were inclined to throw his way, or something else? Turns out it was something much more important… he wanted to change his life. “Jesus I would like to see” he answered Him. Jesus gave him back his sight and Bartimaeus followed the Way, which changed his life.

The Canaanite woman cried out, “have pity on me Son of David, my daughter needs your help”. The Apostles rebuked her. Even Jesus challenged her since she was not a Jew. She persisted and Jesus healed her daughter because of the womans’ faith and persistence.

Recently a young man came into our celebration of the Mass and came to the altar demanding bread and wine. He was confused and agitated. He was not looking for pity, he was looking for help. Our parishioners did not shout him down, but followed him out the door offering help.

It is most difficult to put pride aside and ask for the help needed to change our life’s direction. It is our life’s struggle which brings us to our Lord. This article is written in hope of finding its way to that young man. A message in a bottle. Our community stands ready to help you in your struggle.

Jesus offers healing and help to those who ask Him. It is so much easier to ask our Lord directly. We can help with this if you would like to take the first step.

MASS INTENTION REQUESTS

Offering Mass for a special intention has been a long standing tradition in the Catholic Church. It is usually considered that special graces are received by the person who the intention is for. Masses are said for many reasons; for a deceased person, for a living person, in honor of someone’s birthday, in honor of someone's

anniversary, etc. The name of the person or persons we are praying for is mentioned in the general intercessions, by the priest at Mass and in our weekly bulletin. If you would like to have a Mass said for someone, living or

deceased, please go to the Parish Office. A Mass Card will be given to you as a reminder of the time and date you requested.

Request a Mass for your loved ones, living or deceased, at the parish office.

TODAY IS WORLD MISSION SUNDAY We celebrate this day by remembering our baptismal call—to bring the Gospel to all! The collection today for the Society for the Propagation of the Faith supports the work and witness of the Mission Church, as it provides for priests, religious and lay leaders who offer the Lord’s mercy and concrete help to the most vulnerable communities in the Pope’s missions. Thank you for your generosity. Please make checks out to St, Joan of Arc and one check will be mailed to the Diocese.
