Over the next six weeks we have three special speakers with us in worship. Our focus through the book of 1 Peter has been how to live in a new world. Being a believer in today’s world presents unique challenges and we want you to hear from several different people who have experience with the challenges of being a believer in difficult circumstances.

Judge Etheridge and Sheriff Graves are two of our own members who are public servants in our community. We have the opportunity to hear how God leads them to apply their faith to life and hear the difference it makes.

Gianna Jessen is an abortion survivor. She has spent much of her life speaking about the power of God and the sacredness of all life. We live in a world where biblical values continue to be challenged. Gianna will share her story of perseverance in a new world. You can discover more about Gianna at her web site http://giannajessen.com/.

Thanks to all of you who have brought travel toiletries for the Winston-Salem Ronald McDonald house! I will receive those year-round. I recently delivered a large box of items and received this thank you note:

Thank you for your donation. It is so appreciated! Thank you for helping to provide a “home away from home” for families at our House and Family Rooms. We are grateful for your support.

Board of Directors, Ronald McDonald House of Winston-Salem, Inc.

Bible Drill continues on Sunday for new drillers, who will work on Bible books for two more weeks from 4:45-5:30 pm in room 309. The Bible Drill kick off for all drillers is on Sunday, October 22 from 4:00-5:30 pm in room 309. One parent is asked to attend with each child. If you are undecided about whether to participate, then games, activities, and tips will help you make a decision. Come check it out!

RAs and GAs recently packed 100 activity bags for children in Texas displaced by Hurricane Harvey. North Carolina Baptist Men will distribute them through a feeding or child care site. Thanks to everyone who donated items, to leaders who coordinated the project, and to the children who enthusiastically packed the bags.

It's October and the smell of pumpkin spice and turkey is in the air. Too early you say? Not at all. Thanksgiving has become a big event at FBC over the past many years. I have enjoyed watching this event grow from two volunteers feeding 25 people to 65 volunteers, working to feed 270 people. Some of the same volunteers also cooked the meal for the Salvation Army Thanksgiving last year. We started this project to feed the homeless, but it has grown into much more. Last year we fed many of the homeless. We also fed or delivered meals to shut-ins, the lonely, underemployed, young, old, black, white, Hispanic, singles, couples, and families. Many of our volunteers did this as a family mission project and they all stayed to eat as a family with the family-at-large. We need volunteers to cook, serve, interact, deliver, listen, and pray. We also need sponsors to supply the turkeys and other food items. This Sunday there will be sign-up sheets in your Sunday School classes as well as behind the sanctuary on the organ side. We are asking Sunday School classes to accept the mission of supplying a turkey as well as another food item. We are also looking for volunteers in many capacities. Please join in with this mission project for our community. If you have never attended Thanksgiving at FBC, come see what it is all about.

I am blessed to have been chosen to participate in this year's Student LIFT program (Student Leadership Information for Tomorrow) with the Asheboro/Randolph Chamber of Commerce. For my community project I will be having a "community baby shower" and to collect items needed for Your Choices Randolph. I know how awesome and willing my church family is to help others so I'm asking for you to partner with me! My goal is to collect a total of 500 or more items. Your Choices Randolph helps so many people from young teens struggling with issues of "Worth" to women facing tough decisions regarding pregnancy. They provide sessions called "WORTH" which I had the honor of participating in last year when they came to church and shared this program with our youth.

I have talked with the staff at Your Choices Randolph and they have given me a list of items they need to keep them sharing the love of God with those that come through their doors. I will be putting boxes out on October 7th and will be collecting them on November 28th. These items can be either gently used or new. If you would like to make a monetary donation, see Ashlyn Trotter before or after the 8:30 am service, or you may write a check to Your Choices Randolph; on the memo line add Ashlyn Trotter (LIFT Program.) Some of the items I will be collecting are:

•Preemie & newborn diapers

•Baby shampoo and body wash

•Pacifiers, nail clippers, thermometers, and brush/comb sets

•Modern maternity dresses, blouses, jeans, bathing suits, winter coats

•Diaper bags

•Cardstock paper that will be used for WORTH training sessions

•Copy paper (white, pastel, and bold colors)

Sunday, October 15: Monthly Parent Fellowship at 6:00 pm. We will review the calendar as well as pray together for our students. It is important that we set aside time each month to pray, encourage, and support one another in our parent community!

Middle School Retreat (October 20-22): This epic weekend is run and led by the BeDoTell staff at Fort Caswell located at Oak Island. Students will be invested in worship, grade level small groups and church group devotions. They will have access to activities and sightseeing downtown during free time on Saturday afternoon. It's always a fun and influential time away! The theme for this year focuses on assurance and how to know you're saved.

High School Retreat (November 10-12): This epic weekend is run and led by the upperclassmen of our youth group. They will spend the weekend oceanfront at Ocean Isle. Students will help lead worship and small groups. They also set aside quiet time with God early Saturday morning. The adult leaders will teach large group sessions on Saturday night and Sunday morning. We've got an amazing kitchen crew and delicious snacks. You won't go hungry! There will be free time in the afternoon (Saturday) for students to hang together and relax from the stresses of school, work, sports, clubs, and life! They will continue writing encouragement cards for the each member of our group. The theme for this retreat will focus on total surrender.

Thank you for providing the lovely prayer shawls to patients who are at Randolph Health. I believe it is a true opportunity to reach out in the name of our father. God promises us He will be with us during challenging times, and I believe He accomplishes this through His children. Stan and I were comforted when we received one, and I continue to be touched by your love each time I reach for it. Thank you for your generosity, your faithfulness and your ministry in our community.

Hope Haywood

We are deeply grateful for the kindness and compassion you extended to our family during the loss of my father-in-law. The cards, text messages, and condolences touched our hearts during this difficult time. Thank you for keeping us in your thoughts and prayers.
