St. Ann’s Parish 31st Sunday in Ordinary Time October 30, 2016

I’d like to take a moment and talk about a particular group of people in our parish: our youth. I hope you have noticed the heavy presence of young people in all our ministries where they are permitted to participate. Today we are installing nine new altar servers, one who is already a junior in high school. He was brought to serving by a friend of his who is active here and encouraged him to get more involved in the parish. That brings our number of servers up to thirty-five! We routinely have seven servers assigned to the 10 AM Mass. Someone who was visiting us recently told me how impressed she was, as in her parish they are lucky if they can get one at each Mass! We have young greeters, our children’s choir is attracting new members, we have twelve members of our teen club who attend every meeting. ChristLife has a full table of teenagers, some as young as 8th grade, who are vibrant participants. Whenever I stop in at the sessions, as I approach their table, I frequently find them with their heads bowed in prayer. Three teenagers have asked if they could be members of the Parish Council. The Knights of Columbus have several young adults who have become assets to the group. Several of our teenagers have taken the initiative without any suggestion from me to plan activities for our parish: we have our third tag sale coming up next weekend, and they have planned a Christmas movie night for everyone in December. The teens and young adults who work in the rectory and the sacristy are of tremendous help to me and are among the most reliable helpers I have ever had. I could go on and on, but you get the point: our young people are fantastic! They hold the promise of a bright future for our parish, our church, and our world at a time when hope is so desperately needed! The Parish Council came up with a suggestion that I had considered but never moved on, and I’m pleased to tell you will now be completed. After countless failed attempts to get our parents to bring their children to Mass every Sunday and make it their priority over their sports programs, we are going to turn to the children and work with those who do have faith to reach out to each other and build a true sense of spirituality among our children in both school as well as the religious education program. To help with this, we are going to build a chapel in St. Ann’s School. We are hoping that the Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist in our school will make a profound difference. The students and teachers will both be able to enter the chapel for private prayer in their free time, and teachers can take the classes in and teach them different ways to pray. My hope is that this will create in our children a true sense of prayer and spirituality that will be the foundation for their catechism. The Knights of Columbus have already agreed to help me with the project by doing whatever work they can so as to keep the cost as low as possible. I mentioned the idea to Cardinal Dolan and he was thrilled. He wants me to keep him posted as to how it works. I ask you to pray for our young people, that the dedication to Christ that they already show will continue to grow and will be a source of renewed faith and devotion to the adults as well.

40 Days for Life - Sept. 28th - Nov. 6, 2016

“40 Days for Life” is a peaceful, highly-focused, non-

denominational initiative that focuses on 10 days of prayer

and fasting, peaceful vigil at abortion facilities, and educa-

tional outreach with the goal of protecting mothers and

their children from abortion. At least 11,796 unborn chil-

dren have been saved from abortion during 10 Days for

Life campaigns, and 75 abortion facilities have closed. To

learn more about the 40 Days for Life campaign, visit:

www.40daysforlife.com

We are participating with the NYC Coalition for the Home-

less Clothing Drive over the next two weeks. We will be

collecting in the rear of the Church - New Undergarments

and Socks, along with slightly used Gloves, Hats, Sweats,

Hoodies and Jackets both Male and Female. Sunday, No-

vember 6, 2016 is the last day to drop off.

LET US BE GENEROUS AND REMEMBER THE WORD OF

JESUS:

WHATSOEVER YOU DO TO THE LEAST OF YOUR

BROTHERS AND SISTERS YOU DO UNTO ME

Congratulations!

Congratulations to our newest altar servers who are being in-stalled at Mass this weekend:

Massimo Chiulli, Melina Chiulli, JJ Conway, John Gjonaj, Erin Hogan, Fernando Perez, Jennifer Pierz, Samara Russo,

& Brianna Seaborn

May you always serve God well at His altar and in your daily life!
