Rock & Jazz Drummer Extraordinaire from Australia/L.A.Ca.. As Featured withAlan Holdsworth, Steve Vai, Tribal Tech, Planet X, & Southern Sons!

Featuring: Virgil Donati - Drums; Anthony Crawford - Bass; André Nieri - Guitar;Isamu McGregor - Keyboards

Legendary drum virtuoso Virgil Donati’s latest album “In This Life” will be will befeatured on the upcoming US tour.

Having recently won Modern Drummer Magazines best recorded performance, ithas set the bar for explorations in rhythm. The album was produced, written andarranged by Donati. Virgil’s drumming has arguably been at the leading edge forat least a decade, and as this record displays, his compositional and orchestrationskills are also coming to the fore. Never one to seek approval or security, he hasmaintained an introspective, independent mind, transcending traditionalboundaries, always alert of the possibilities beyond the norm. The 10 tracks on thisalbum are affirmation of these principles, and along the way, features some of thebrightest young musicians bursting onto the scene from all corners of the globe. Some of these young musicians will be featured on this tour; Anthony Crawford on

Page 5: October 30 - live.ezezine.comlive.ezezine.com/ezine/pdf/640_3-2015.08.30.18.09.archive.pdf · Sheehan, Derek Sherinian, Mark Boals, Michel Polnareff, Dave Stewart, Kiko Loureiro,

Some of these young musicians will be featured on this tour; Anthony Crawford onbass, André Nieri on guitar, and Isamu McGregor on keyboards/vocals.“We'vefound our feet in the new millennium… I'm amazed by the virtuosity displayed byso many of the younger players out there now. I'm always on the lookout for newtalent, and I take pride in featuring some of them on this tour” enthuses Donati.

As a sideman he has recently been touring and recording with Allan Holdsworth, and his reverence for Allans music has led him to include some Holdsworthclassics in the set, including Metal Fatigue, Material Real, and Water On The Brain. The show wouldn’t be complete without a tribute to Planet X, with a few tracks from‘Quantum’ to round off the set list.

Virgil was born and raised in Melbourne Australia. From the time he could barelyutter a word, he keenly observed the regular band rehearsals his father held in thehouse. Joining his first rock band and signing with his first major label at age 15was surely the right choice for the young drummer. The band was called `Taste’.This was to give Virgil his early experiences in the studio, with three releases bythe band.

His next taste of commercial success came in the early 90’s with Southern Sons. The band reached double platinum with their debut album. At the same time, throughout the mid 80’s and 90’s, Virgil’s interest in progressive music wasexploited with several bands he initiated, most notably Loose Change, and later,On The Virg.

In 1996 Virgil uprooted and relocated in the U.S.A., in an attempt to expand ontothe world stage. It has since proved to be a very rewarding and productive time.Recording and touring with the likes of Planet X, Steve Vai, Allan Holdsworth, CAB,Scott Henderson, Steve Walsh, Tribal Tech, Frank Gambale, Tony MacAlpine, BillySheehan, Derek Sherinian, Mark Boals, Michel Polnareff, Dave Stewart, KikoLoureiro, and many others, he continues to push the limits of the instrument toastonishing new levels.

Legendary Jazz Group live at Nighttown for 2 Big Nights!Featuring: Russell Ferrante-piano & keyboards, Bob Mintzer-sax, Will Kennedy-drums, & Dane Alderson-electric bass.

Throughout their storied 35-year history, the Yellowjackets have recorded 22albums, received 17 Grammy® nominations – won 2 – performed countless sold-out tours, and enjoyed worldwide critical acclaim and commercial success.

The Yellowjackets formed in the late 1970’s as the backup band for guitaristRobben Ford and recorded their first album together in 1980. That first album wasvery successful. However, shortly after that recording Robben Ford decided torecord in a different musical direction (more blues) and thus the modern dayYellowjackets were formed originally as a trio with Russell Ferrante, Jimmy Haslipand Ricky Lawson. From that time forward to today with the addition of BobMintzer, the Yellowjackets have gained and maintained prominence as one ofjazz’s most influential and most loved jazz groups.

Throughout it all the band has undergone numerous lineup changes. Never failingto rise to the inevitable challenges of adjustment the Yellowjackets - RussellFerrante, William Kennedy, Bob Mintzer - have maintained an extraordinarily highquality of musicianship that is the rival of many but a surprise to no one who knowsand appreciates the band and their music.

The most recent addition to the band adds bass player Dane Alderson in to themix. Dane hails from Sydney, Australia but now lives in the United States. Danebrings a new energy to the band and a unique and youthful approach to the music. He grew up listening to the Yellowjackets never actually realizing that he wouldsomeday join them on stage as a member of the group. It’s a testimony to his highlevel of groove and rhythmic sensibility, that Dane fits right in. It’s as though he’salways been here.

The Yellowjackets plan to record their 23rd album this summer. Watch for thealbum will be released on Mack Avenue Records in early 2016.

JANE MONHEIT$30.00 Wednesday 10/28 7:00 pm Buy Tickets 9:00 pm Buy Tickets

Thursday 10/29 7:00 pm Buy Tickets 9:00 pm Buy Tickets

Jazz & Cabaret vocalist extraordinaire and her group live atNighttown!

“Everything I’m singing now is a reflection of my truest self,” says Jane Monheit.“After all this time in the industry, after touring for 13 years, it’s time to just be me,with complete and utter freedom.”

Monheit’s sense of liberation is apparent throughout The Heart Of The Matter, theacclaimed, Grammy-nominated vocalist’s ninth studio album. It can be felt in herwide- ranging choice of material, in the unique arrangements, and in her ownfearless performances and interpretations. The diverse and very personal set ofsongs includes both familiar standards and compositions by Lennon/McCartney,Randy Newman, two songs by Ivan Lins, recorded in the original Portuguese, and,for the first time, a Monheit original.

“I knew that I wanted the material to be chosen based on the lyrical content”, saysMonheit of the eclectic track list. “Over the years, my singing has really taken onthat focus. At the beginning of my career, I wanted to show proof of my knowledgeof music, that I could improvise and sing through the changes. But as I got older, especially after getting married and having a child, I started feeling the lyrics moresimply because I had more to sing about. Focusing on the technical side was partof my learning process, but over time, all of that became a natural part of mysinging. Now I use it to support the lyric, not just to prove myself.”

Monheit has been a leading light in both the jazz and cabaret worlds sinceemerging as a finalist in the Thelonious Monk Institute’s 1998 vocal competition. Inaddition to her own recordings, she has worked alongside the likes of TerenceBlanchard, Tom Harrell, and Ivan Lins. She says that the distinctive, continuallysurprising sound of The Heart Of The Matter is the result of an especially satisfyingcollaboration with Grammy-winning producer Gil Goldstein, who has previouslyworked with such giants as Wayne Shorter, Gil Evans, and Pat Metheny. The pairfirst joined forces for part of Monheit’s 2009 album The Lovers, The Dreamers, andMe.

Though the dozen tracks were recorded in just three days, Monheit notes that the

Page 18: October 30 - live.ezezine.comlive.ezezine.com/ezine/pdf/640_3-2015.08.30.18.09.archive.pdf · Sheehan, Derek Sherinian, Mark Boals, Michel Polnareff, Dave Stewart, Kiko Loureiro,

sessions came at “a very intense time” in her own life. Her young son had recentlyinjured his arm and needed surgery, and her grandparents had been displaced byHurricane Sandy, losing nearly everything they owned. “When you’re isolated inthe vocal booth, you’re able to process everything,” she says. “There are nodistractions, so you get inside yourself more to reach a deeper level ofinterpretation.”

From the song choices to the performances, The Heart Of The Matter is a workdeeply informed by Jane Monheit’s life- as a woman, wife, and mother in thesecond decade of a remarkable career- and it reaches emotional levels sheattributes to an “extreme comfort zone” in the recording studio. “It was a smallgroup, we’re all friends, and everyone really wanted to be there,” she says. “I’mvery close with my band, so to hear Gil’s beautiful work with my family beneath itinspired me to be completely unselfconscious… I think I’ve finally reached my levelof onstage, live interpretation in the studio, which has always been a challenge forme.”

“When you’re playing with people you love,” says Monheit, “it always makes forbetter music.”
