The Lessons

Genesis 1:27-31 Common English BibleReader A reading from the book of Genesis. God created humanity in God’s own image, in the divine image God created them, male and female God created them. God blessed them and said to them, “Be fertile and multiply; fill the earth and master it. Take charge of the fish of the sea, the birds in the sky, and everything crawling on the ground.” Then God said, “I now give to you all the plants on the earth that yield seeds and all the trees whose fruit produces its seeds within it. These will be your food. To all wildlife, to all the birds in the sky, and to everything crawling on the ground—to everything that breathes—I give all the green grasses for food.” And that’s what happened. God saw everything he had made: it was supremely good. here was evening and there was morning: the sixth day.Reader The Word of the Lord.People Thanks be to God.

Psalm 30 Common English BibleReader Please join with me in reading the Psalm for today. I exalt you, Lord, because you pulled me up; you didn’t let my enemies celebrate over me.

Lord, my God, I cried out to you for help, and you healed me. Lord, you brought me up from the grave, brought me back to life from among those going down to the pit. You who are faithful to the Lord, sing praises to him; give thanks to his holy name! His anger lasts for only a second, but his favor lasts a lifetime. Weeping may stay all night, but by morning, joy! When I was comfortable, I said, “I will never stumble.” Because it pleased you, Lord, you made me a strong mountain. But then you hid your presence. I was terrified. I cried out to you, Lord. I begged my Lord for mercy: “What is to be gained by my spilled blood, by my going down into the pit? Does dust thank you? Does it proclaim your faithfulness? Lord, listen and have mercy on me! Lord, be my helper!” You changed my mourning into dancing. You took off my funeral clothes and dressed me up in joy so that my whole being might sing praises to you and never stop. Lord, my God, I will give thanks to you forever.

The Holy Gospel Matthew 21:33-46 CEBDeacon The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to Matthew.People Glory to you, Lord Christ.“Listen to another parable. There was a landowner who planted a vineyard. He put a fence around it, dug a wine-press in it, and built a tower. Then he rented it to tenant farmers and took a trip. When it was time for harvest, he sent his ser-vants to the tenant farmers to collect his fruit. But the tenant farmers grabbed his servants. They beat some of them, and some of them they killed. Some of them they stoned to death. “Again he sent other servants, more than the first group. They treated them in the same way. Finally he sent his son to them. ‘They will respect my son,’ he said. “But when the tenant farmers saw the son, they said to each other, ‘This is the heir. Come on, let’s kill him and we’ll have his inheri-tance.’ They grabbed him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. “When the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenant farmers?” They said, “He will totally destroy those wicked farmers and rent the vineyard to other tenant farmers who will give him the fruit when it’s ready.” Jesus said to them, “Haven’t you ever read in the scriptures, The stone that the builders rejected has become the cornerstone. The Lord has done this, and it’s amazing in our eyes? Therefore, I tell you that God’s kingdom will be taken away from you and will be given to a people who produce its fruit. Whoever falls on this stone will be crushed. And the stone will crush the person it falls on.” Now when the chief priests and the Pharisees heard the parable, they knew Jesus was talking about them. They were trying to arrest him, but they feared the crowds, who thought he was a prophet.Deacon The Gospel of the Lord.People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

How might we relate to each other if we were given glasses that allowed us to see as God sees? Would we stand in awe of the divine reflecting back to us from ALL our neighbors? Even those who don’t vote like? Love like us? Look like us?

How might we see those with whom we disagree, if we saw them as God does, as all supremely good? We’d love more. Forgive more. Share hope. Create peace. Be joyful.

PrayersOfficiant Almighty God, to whom we must account for all our powers and privileges: Guide the people of the United States in the election of our president, officials, and representatives; that, by faithful administration and wise laws, the rights of all may be protected and our nation be enabled to fulfill your purposes; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Officiant O God, you have bound us together in a common life. Help us, in the midst of our struggles for justice and truth, to confront one another without hatred or bitterness, and to work together with mutual forbearance and respect; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Officiant Grant, O God, that your holy and life-giving Spirit may so move ev-ery human heart and especially the hearts of the people of this land, that barriers which divide us may crumble, suspicions disappear, and hatreds cease; that our divisions being healed, we may live in justice and peace; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Pledge To The 2020 Presidential ElectorateThis pledge is not necessarily a goal to be accomplished, but a way of being

toward one another – a practice to be lived day-to-day.

As a person of faith committed to the life and teachings of Jesus, I make this pledge to all people regardless of their political beliefs, whether we are in agreement or disagreement, and regardless of who wins the election.

With respect to my words and actions, whether in person or through social media, I pledge and commit myself, both before and after the election –

▪ To love others as Jesus has loved me (John 13:34); ▪ To treat others as I would want them to treat me (Luke 6:31); ▪ To love my enemies, do good to those who hate me, bless those who curse me, and pray for those who abuse me (Luke 6:27-28); ▪ To “proclaim by word and example the Good News of God in Christ” (Book of Common Prayer, 305.) and ▪ To “strive for justice and peace among all people, and to respect the dignity of every human being” (Book of Common Prayer, 305.)

This I pledge in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Prayers and Pledge from: Interrupting the Silence AN EPISCOPAL PRIEST’S SERMONS, PRAYERS, AND REFLECTIONS ON LIFE, BECOMING HUMAN,

AND DISCOVERING OUR DIVINITY

Nicene CreedDeacon We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven:

11

by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen
