This symposium will strengthen participant’s core knowledge and skills when caring for seriously ill, hospitalized patients and their families. Nationally recognized educators will lead case-based, problem-solving sessions to help participants understand evidence and apply practical pearls to better manage refractory pain and symptoms. A lively pro-con “group debate” will explore the ethical and legal tensions that arise around disagreements in documented patient care prefer-ences. Finally, interactive, hands-on communication workshops will introduce a simple framework for more effective conversations, with practical exercises to help participants gain comfort and confidence in: managing unrealistic demands for unhelpful treatments; making recommendations around resuscitation; and introducing supportive care and hospice support.
