What happens when Rail~Volution lands in the Innovation Capital of the World? Find out this October when we bring our annual four-day meeting back to the San Francisco Bay Area.
Join Rail~Volution as we explore the region’s wide range of transportation alternatives and transformative transit projects:
• The new 43-mile Sonoma Marin Area Rail Transit District (SMART) light rail line, set to open in 2016 in the North Bay
• Muni Metro’s Central Subway, under construction in San Francisco
• Major extensions of BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) underway in two locales
• The stunning Transbay Transit Center – billed as the Grand Central Station of the West – rising in the heart of San Francisco

What is Rail~Volution?A movement. A resource. A network of people.
For over 20 years, Rail~Volution has been the place to engage in thoughtful discussions with change makers and influencers, a place to share ideas and breakthroughs, frustrations and inspiration, about building livable communities with transit. We provide learning opportunities to equip you with best practices. We connect and expand your network with leaders in the public transportation, transit-oriented development, placemaking and community development fields.
Our annual conference, place-based events and online resource library showcase how land use, transportation and development can transform communities into livable places -- healthy, economically vibrant, socially equitable and environmentally sustainable.
The Rail~Volution conference has proven results. At the Rail~Volution conference, you can increase your skills, knowledge and ability to effectively promote, plan and implement transit and development projects. Overwhelmingly, 95% of attendees surveyed agreed that their skills, capabilities and leadership grew as a result of the conference. Over 74% said Rail~Volution specifically helped them communicate more effectively about transit and planning issues with stakeholders. 1
At Rail~Volution, you’ll connect to the people you need to know. You’ll be exposed to pioneers in the industry who are shaping the future of the livability movement, but you’ll also hear from the people who are making things happen today. More than half of attendees surveyed made connections to people that make a difference in their work.1

An Evening Exploration of Alcatraz
You know it as home to some of America’s most notorious criminals – Al “Scarface” Capone, “Birdman” Robert Stroud. But there’s more to Alcatraz Island than the notorious federal penitentiary that operated there from 1934 to 1963. Today, Alcatraz is home to rare flowers and plants, marine wildlife and thousands of roosting and nesting sea birds. Experience the island’s many moods on this evening visit. Enjoy the beauty of the city and the Golden Gate at sunset, the bridge in silhouette. Hear compelling stories about the island’s history and residents. The Alcatraz Night Tour is limited to just a few hundred visitors per evening, with special programs, tours and activities not offered during the day.

Bittersweet: The Infamous Chocolate + Coffee San Francisco Bike Tour
The Mission. Potrero Hill. Dogpatch. Hunter’s Point. SOMA. Bike through them all – and take in stunning views of the bay – on this sweet tour of the city’s best artisan chocolate and coffee makers. Food, design and history – culinary, creative and cool.
You’ll start off in the mural-rich Mission. Sip coffee from an iconic local coffee roaster while exploring an internationally renowned ceramics factory and gallery. Next peek into the Mission’s favorite chocolatier’s test kitchen and sample their award-winning treats. After a ride along the bay, enjoy a locally-famous sourdough pizza (other delicious options available) in an eco-park with panoramic views of the Bay Bridge, Berkeley and Oakland. Finish the tour with a pedal through the Dogpatch neighborhood and discover its collection of art galleries, chocolate shops, cheesemakers, wine producers and coffee roasters. CALIFORNIA DAYBigger and Bolder: Preparing California Communities for High-Speed Rail
Wednesday, October 12 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Urban regions in the US have made great strides coordinating transportation and land use planning in recent years. The Bay Area, for example, has a policy framework to encourage higher development densities around new transit stations. Other regions have leveraged significant investments in new transit infrastructure to promote the creation of economically vibrant and walkable new urban environments around transit. Yet few have matched efforts of other countries, where the construction of large multimodal transportation hubs has redefined the physical form of entire city districts and reoriented regional economies.
Now is our chance.
Construction of California’s high-speed rail (HSR) project is underway. Revenue service between the Central Valley and Silicon Valley will begin in 2025. With HSR, California’s transportation future has the potential to be much more sustainable. The HSR line also presents opportunities for station cities to build multimodal transportation centers that can become significant generators of economic activities and important destinations.
What actions should California cities under-take to benefit from this historic investment in HSR? What can we learn from France about large station redevelopment? Study examples of a more holistic and proactive approach to transportation investment and city building than is common here at home — in Lille, Lyon and Bordeaux.
Hear from leading minds in academia, the State of California, and SPUR, the Bay Area’s highly-regarded urban planning think tank. Listen to their ideas for a paradigm shift in large transportation investments. Apply lessons learned around the world to California HSR station communities in San Jose Diridon, Fresno and Los Angeles.
FEE: $50
