1 October 2018 WINNING THE LOTTERY! In April I won the lottery! No, it was not the Kansas Lottery. In fact, I have never purchased a lottery ticket—although I have been given tickets as gifts. I have never had to count my winnings of any amount. What I did win in a government-conducted lottery was a permit to climb Half Dome in Yosemite National Park, California. Not everyone thinks that gaining the opportunity to hike 16 miles—with an elevation gain of nearly 5,000 feet—is “winning” a lottery. It is not a “walk in the park,” but a climb that is in front of me. After four years of entering the lottery and trying to win one of the 300 daily permits, I was finally successful in receiving a permit to climb Half Dome via the cable route. Having saved a week of vacation time, I will (with my brother Neil) attempt the hike/climb on Tuesday, October 2. I first read about the cable route to the summit of Half Dome when I was in grade school more than a half-century ago, so this endeavor is one I have hoped to attempt for a long time. I hope now that the weather and my physical conditioning permit a fulfillment of my dream. At least, the winning of the lot- tery will deliver me to the trailhead for my ascent. So, have you won the lottery lately? Of course you have! We are all winners of the great prize in life—the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. We win this lottery, thanks not to our purchase of a winning ticket, but because Jesus died on the cross and by grace restores us to a new and right relationship with almighty God. We are winners, and all of humanity has the opportunity to share in the prize of God’s great love freely given. Rejoice! You won the lot- tery! Pastor Loren D. Mai

WINNING THE LOTTERY!

In April I won the lottery! No, it was not the Kansas Lottery. In fact, I have

never purchased a lottery ticket—although I have been given tickets as gifts. I

have never had to count my winnings of any amount.

What I did win in a government-conducted lottery was a permit to climb Half

Dome in Yosemite National Park, California. Not everyone thinks that gaining

the opportunity to hike 16 miles—with an elevation gain of nearly 5,000

feet—is “winning” a lottery. It is not a “walk in the park,” but a climb that is

in front of me. After four years of entering the lottery and trying to win one of

the 300 daily permits, I was finally successful in receiving a permit to climb

Half Dome via the cable route. Having saved a week of vacation time, I will

(with my brother Neil) attempt the hike/climb on Tuesday, October 2.

I first read about the cable route to the summit of Half Dome when I was in

grade school more than a half-century ago, so this endeavor is one I have

hoped to attempt for a long time. I hope now that the weather and my physical

conditioning permit a fulfillment of my dream. At least, the winning of the lot-

tery will deliver me to the trailhead for my ascent.

So, have you won the lottery lately? Of course you have! We are all winners

of the great prize in life—the gift of salvation through Jesus Christ. We win

this lottery, thanks not to our purchase of a winning ticket, but because Jesus

died on the cross and by grace restores us to a new and right relationship with

almighty God. We are winners, and all of humanity has the opportunity to

share in the prize of God’s great love freely given. Rejoice! You won the lot-

tery! Pastor Loren D. Mai

One of the recurring themes in Stephen Ministry is “God’s Love in Action.” We are of-

ten directed through scripture to take action, to be the face of Jesus in today’s challeng-

ing world. Sometimes, it takes the form of a baked cake, a hospital visit, a run to the

pharmacy for a neighbor, or a listening ear.

This season, we are preparing to send out the call – a call to those who have the will to

go into action for God. Soon, you will be hearing of plans for a new Stephen Ministry

class. We will need men and women with a heart for others to answer that call and join

our ranks as Stephen Ministers. Will it be you? Will you have the time and the vision to

swing into the gentle action of a good listener, a welcome visitor, a minister of presence?

Listen for our invitation. There will be joy for all of us in your answer.

~ Holly Johnson

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved by him, a worker who has no

need to be ashamed, rightly explaining the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15

Time for the annual existential debate, balancing the theoretical with the practical.

What should I be for Halloween? I was thinking maybe a pirate or a ninja. Not sure

yet. Actually, I will probably go as Darth Vader again. After all, I have the mask. My

kids were talking about Halloween recently. They didn’t like my suggestions though. I

miss the days when they were ladybugs and pumpkins. Now they want to be something

a little more formidable. That’s OK. Halloween is a chance for them to express who

they are.

Who are you? What expression of your true self do you show? Do you wear a

mask? Or rather, which mask do you wear? Are you ashamed of who you are when

others see the real you underneath?

Do not be ashamed of who you are. Do not be doubtful of the worthiness under-

neath the mask. You are indeed a beloved child of God. Let that sink in a minute. You

are loved by God, created in God’s very image, an image of Love. You are created out

of love and you are created to be loved just as you are. No mask required.

This is a beautiful, wonderful thing and we need to all hear it once in a while. Ac-

tually, we need to hear it daily. Because, daily, God loves us, loves you. Daily, God

looks right through the masks we put on. The masks of trying to be perfect, trying to be

someone that we are not, trying to cover up the sin that is beneath. Daily, God looks

through our masks and loves us anyway. Like a parent looking past the grubby exterior

and loving the beautiful child underneath. Also, like a loving parent, God washes us

clean and makes us new.

My friends, this Halloween, be who you want to be and dress like you want. I

will. Also know that what you wear on Halloween or any day does not change who you

are on the inside. Who you are is a beloved child of God. That will never change.

Praise the Lord!

LIBRARY CORNER

NEW BOOK FOR MISS CHARLOTTE’S PLACE

The latest addition to our children’s library, The Jumping-Off Place by

Marian Hurd McNeely, moves the quality of our collection upward one

more notch. It is a Newbery Honor Book written in 1929 and is based on McNeely’s

own experiences as a homesteader in Tripp County, South Dakota.

A one-sentence summary from the back of the title page states: “In the early 1900s, as

four young homesteaders in Tripp County, South Dakota, work hard to prepare for the

coming winter, they face drought, discomfort, and sabotaging squatters but find new

friends and strength to carry on.” Illustrations by William Siegal, maps, an affirmative

afterword, and even a word list add to the historical authenticity. The narrative quickly

draws the reader into the story, making it difficult to put the book down.

I had to read it, of course, and it confirms my belief that one of the best ways to under-

stand our history (what it was like in the old days) is through novels like this one.

Once again, our thanks to Nancy Lundblad for finding the book and donating it to our

library.
