EDUCATION EVENTS EXPERIENCE TRAVEL OMNIClub Outlook OCTOBER - DECEMBER 2017 by Sherry Gibbon, Community Relations Manager Technology has given us the availability to receive information immediately, and to contact individuals wherever they are. In today’s world, technology is part of everything we do, from driving our car, buying our gas, using electricity, shopping online, and online banking. “But, has it really made life easier and simpler? Or, has it made it easier for our personal information to be compromised?” October is designated as Cyber Security Awareness Month and this article will discuss ways to protect yourself online. “Has technology made life easier and simpler?” Of course it has. For example, paperwork is now scanned and emailed to an individual across the country in a fraction of the time it takes for mail to be delivered. Notifications of discounts, sales, and other special advertising are sent via text messages or emails, putting shopping for the best deals right at your fingertips. Now, while all of this sounds great, there are some areas of concern when you receive an email with an attachment. If you are NOT expecting the email from the individual, be cautious. DO NOT open the attachment. Call the individual from a telephone number you have in your contact list and not the one listed in the email. You may also copy and paste the URL into your browser to verify that the email is from a legitimate source. If all of these factors are checked, and the email is NOT valid, it is recommended to delete the email from your device completely. Technology is great and can provide us with valuable information. Just remember that we need to protect our devices just as we do our homes when we leave them while on vacation. “Has technology made it easier for our personal information to be compromised?” Hackers, or cybercriminals, have become more sophisticated and now target banking and credit card information to sell on the black market. As consumers, we have to find ways to protect our personal information from being compromised. One way to ensure that our computers are safe is to download an antivirus protection program and to keep it updated with the most current version. Create difficult passwords and change them frequently. DO NOT use the same passwords for all your accounts or services, this opens the door for all your information to be vulnerable. Never use your birthday, anniversary, or information that can be obtained from social media. Consider using a phrase or words to your favorite song for a password. When it comes to answering security questions related to your accounts, it is suggested to be creative, just remember what you answered. Technology is forever changing and how it is being used. As individuals we need to be diligent and aware of how to protect our devices. On Tuesday, November 7, in Longview, and on Thursday, November 9, in Hideaway Lake, Vice President and Manager of Treasury Services Chris Davis will lead lunch-n- learn presentations on “Cyber Threats and Trends,” sharing his knowledge on trending threats in cyber security. Protect Your Android Phones and Other DevicesInformation is given to us daily in the news, on the Internet, and in magazines on how to protect our electronic devices. It is definitely a hot topic! This year, the Android phone has been a major concern due to the number of individuals who have this device and the issue of fake versions of apps that can be downloaded to the phone.

If you have not downloaded these apps, DO NOT download them, they are malicious! The following are known Trojan virus programs to watch out for:

DroidDream – Clones SIM card to read / send text message

Fakeneflic – Malicious NetFlix copycat. Steals login credentials

GGTracker – Uses fee-based SMS subscription services

Nickispy – Transmits phone calls, location, and text message to remote site

xoBOT (a.k.a. Marcher) – A banking Trojan that attacks by offering fake versions of popular apps (i.e. WhatsApp, NetFlix, Adobe Flash, etc.)

The following are tips to help protect your Android device:

If you need assistance or would like additional information, please contact a representative from our T3 Support Center at 903-237-1881 or 1-800-263-7013.

Being “connected” brings increased risk of theft, fraud, and abuse. Cyber attacks are increasing as society is more dependent on online systems and digital technology. Each of us has a shared responsibility to protect our electronic devices and personal information.

Remember the acronym P.L.O.T. for these safety tips:

PASSWORDS Set strong passwords, and do Not Share with anyone.

LINKS Do Not open links attached in an email unless you know the sender and/or are expecting the information.

OPEN Avoid unsecure WiFi networks when conducting business online with sensitive personal and financial information.

TARGETED Be aware of phishing emails asking for personal ATTACKS information. Do Not share with anyone without verifying validity of request.

Talk to your family, friends, and co-workers about Internet safety and share your experiences with each other. Someone may benefit from your discussion.
