Sunday Bible Study – 9:45 AM Study of the Book of I Thessalonians.
The book of 1st Thessalonians is a Pauline Epistle (letter from Paul). The Apostle Paul wrote it about 52-54 A.D. and it was one of his earliest written letters. The key personalities in this book are the Apostle Paul, Timothy, and Silas. Paul wrote this letter to strengthen and encourage the church in Thessalonica. To encourage and hearten the believers, Paul chose to emphasize the second coming of Jesus Christ. Throughout this letter, Paul focused on the principles of Faith, Hope, and Love. Paul teaches the church about the resurrection on the last day and that Christ will return in the clouds, this was exactly the encouragement that the church in Thessalonica needed. Lastly, before Paul finishes his letter he does not forget to add that they must pray constantly and “examine everything carefully’. In today’s world of lies, deception and carnival mirrors, everyone must apply these truths daily.
Wednesday Bible Study – 6:30 PM Study of the Book of 1st Samuel.
The Book of 1 Samuel is full of colorful characters. In its pages you will meet Hannah, Samuel, Saul, and David. As you experience their tragedies and triumphs, their emotional highs and lows, you'll learn more about yourself—and how God wants to work in your life. This study will look at how to trust God when you don't always get what you want; how to trust your future to him; what priorities you should have in life; and practical steps for maintaining relationships. Most of all, it teaches you how to glorify God in all you do by learning from the successes and failures of those it recounts.
John Knox Bible Study will resume Thursday September 13, 201 @ 10:00 am
Our inheritance through Christ is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading. In 1 & 2 Peter, a man of faith and
flaws and eyewitness to the life of Christ challenges us to look beyond our current circumstances to a future
inheritance. He shares his concerns on big picture issues for the early church, describes believers’ true identity
in Christ, and ultimately helps readers discover what it means to experience the Living Hope they have in
Christ. Key themes of humility, submission, and identity in Christ guide the study of 1 & 2 Peter as participants
are challenged to read the book in its entirety.

LWML SUNDAY
CELEBRATE LUTHERAN WOMEN IN
MISSION
A special worship service is planned for next Sunday October 7th, to celebrate all that God has done through the LWML. The author of this service, Reverend Ken Hennings selected the theme, “Our Rest in a Changing World,” based upon Psalm 62:1–8. Since 1942, the LWML has affirmed each woman’s identity as a child of God and her relationship with Jesus Christ, encouraging and equipping Christian women to live out their lives in active mission ministries, and to support missions around the world through their sacrificial gifts of mites, tithes, offerings, and tireless service.

LWML (Lutheran Women’s Missionary League) The Topic for the October 2018 Circle Meetings is found in the Fall Quarterly on page 16 entitled: “Grace Upon Grace” Authored by Shari Miller. Shari, wife of Rev. Larry Miller, mother of two grown children, is a freelance author and musician living in Helena Montana. She attends First Lutheran Church and is LWML Montana District President. We have enjoyed her previous Contributions of Bible Study
Roll call word “Grace”. Alpha Circle will meet Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at the home of Wanda Thurnau at 1:00pm with Carol head as her Co-Hostess. Barbara Bellach will lead the Topic. Norma Whitaker will check the Acolyte Robes for laundering or mending needs. For more information, please call the President of Alpha Circle, Wanda Thurnau at 816-524-8099. Lydia Circle will meet Wednesday, October 10, 2018 at 1:30pm in the Church Fellowship Hall with Peggy Noah and Wilma Seutter hosting the meeting. Kathy Boehm will lead the Topic. For more information, please call the President of Lydia Circle, Darla Wolters at 816-836-2914.
Mites – Missions – Grants – A penny, a dime, a quarter prayerfully given, will eventually reach the masses of people so desperately needing assistance, being food, medicine or pair of glasses. The women’s organization called LWML (Lutheran Women’s Missionary League), organized in 1940, took the challenge and bravely entered the field of service to all mankind. Their faith, dedication, courage, patience and human concern played a part in reaching out across the globe. One penny at a time and they went to work. Today the goal of Mission Grants is $2,075,000 for the 2017-2019 Biannual and still…one penny at a time…Blessed by God. Who can ever forget the widow who gave all that she had. She combined quality in living and gave. With her, living for Christ and giving to Christ were one and the same. Did the Lord let her down? What He did for her, He will do for us.
L…et tongues sing God’s goodness, Let hearts hold to faith. W…e gather mites for missions, with feet run the race. M…y hands folded praying, lips sharing His grace. L…et Christ’s life be in me and shine from my face (excerpts from “Overflowing Love)

Book Club Woman of God
By James Patterson and Maxine Paetro
The world is watching as massive crowds gather in Rome, waiting for news of a new pope, one who promises to be unlike any other in history. It's a turning point that may change the Church forever. Some followers are ecstatic that the movement reinvigorating the Church is about to reach the Vatican, but the leading candidate has made a legion of powerful enemies who aren't afraid to kill for their cause. From a difficult childhood with drug addled parents, to a career as a doctor on the front lines in Sudan, to a series of trials that test her faith at every turn, Brigid Fitzgerald's convictions and callings have made her the target of all those who fear that the Church has lost its way-dangerous adversaries who abhor challenges to tradition. Locked in a deadly, high-stakes battle with forces determined to undermine everything she believes in, Brigid must convert her enemies to her cause before she loses her faith . . . and her life.
From a civil war in Sudan to the drug dens and law firms of Boston, Woman of God spans the globe with a thrilling tale of perseverance, love, trust and what it means to live in a fallen world.

The Spinner
The following pamphlets have been added to “The Lutheran Hour Spinner” in the entryway. Maybe
there is one or two that you’d find helpful for a friend or yourself. You never know until you look.
Depression: Major depression is a cruel and horribly sad disruption of life. Most of us, by the
grace of God, are sufficiently resilient to endure small setbacks, reversals, and even longer periods
of discouragement and loss. That kind of self-determined rebound, however, is not an option for those
experiencing clinical depression.
True clinical depression dwarfs any sadness the average person experiences. It’s a life-crippling hurt that can
wipe out the suffering individual. It gives those afflicted an overwhelming sense of hopelessness, isolating them
from family, life, health and love. In this booklet, Dr. Beverly Yahnke, a licensed psychologist and university
professor, will explore this devastating condition and offer help in detecting those struggling with it. Along the
way, she offers insights and a fresh perspective into how others can respond – with knowledge and compassion-
to those who are depressed.
The Conflict at Home: Confronting PTSD: In this Project Connect booklet by Lutheran Church-Missouri
Synod Pastor and Chaplain Steven Hokana, the psychological and physical upheaval of Post-Traumatic Stress
Disorder (PTSD) is candidly discussed. Hokanna gives hope for the person embattled by PTSD to push on, to fight
the good fight that can only be waged and fully won through Jesus Christ.
In casual prose, Hokana brings the reader into the heart of the matter. PTSD is nothing to be ashamed of-but it
must be dealt with. He reminds the reader this struggle is winnable, but it won’t be won by dodging the problem.
Instead, it will take God’s grace, the Holy Spirit’s power and the soldier’s commitment to see it through. But it
can be done!
A career military veteran, Hokana brings a fresh and optimistic perspective to those who have experienced
severe mental and emotional trauma in their lives. Written with the serviceman or woman in mind, this
information is nonetheless of great value to anyone fighting this fierce anxiety disorder. No matter the source
of the trauma, there is hope and it is found in Jesus Christ, who conquered everything this world can dish out –
including PTSD.
Strength and Honor - The Spiritual Warfare Against Pornography: Pornography, sadly, is a word all
too familiar these days. To say porn has crept into our households would be an understatement; its advance has
been more like a march, leaving a host of casualties in its wake: individuals, marriages, families, relationships,
careers, sometimes even one’s faith-go down the drain, as this take-no-prisoner scourge derails Christian and
non-Christian alike.
In this booklet the reader will find insights and hope for dealing with the problems brought on by pornography.
The words offered here are Christ-centered, to the poit, and deliver a Christian approach to battling this
pernicious vice. Its overriding aim is to help individuals defeat pornographic addiction in their lives, and with the
power of God’s grace it can be done. As the author writes, “It is in His Name we conquer strongholds, including
those built around the deception and slavery of pornography.”
