2 To advertise in The CF15 Directory please call 07989 431716Dear Neighbours,

The summer sun, what little we saw of it, has well & truly hung up his hat, & at the time of writing this, there is a definite autumnal feel in the air! The lights are being turned on earlier & in some houses the heating is on already! Thoughts are turning from light salads & bbq’s to heartier fayre to keep us warm through the colder eves. Halloween will soon be upon us; bringing with it, light hearted games of trick or treat & pumpkin carving; closely followed by sparklers & rockets for Bonfire night…dare I say it, the festive season will then be here! There are already Christmas cards & gift wrap in some shops! The year has gone by in a flash, & has brought about lots of changes. Many new developments have sprung up across CF15, new businesses have opened, new residents have joined us in CF15 & here at The CF15 Directory I say a sad farewell to Rachael who is leaving to concentrate on other projects. I, along with all of you who had the pleasure to meet her or speak with her, will no doubt wish her well. The CF15 Directory will still continue to bring you details of businesses, useful information, numbers, community news & events along with some new things along the way! I hope you will continue to read and enjoy the magazine & contribute to it. I am always looking for ideas for recipes or for people to submit articles. This is a community magazine, without you, the reader & the local businesses it wouldn’t be possible, so please do write, email or call me to let me know what you want to see in your magazine.

As usual in this edition there are some recipes for you to try out, children’s pages, along with some articles & ideas for what to do in the garden during October & November.

The August/ September edition was proud to support local charity Autism Puzzles, in this edition Karen & Jo are guest writers giving us all an update on how Autism Puzzles is going, and an idea of their exciting forthcoming events schedule!

Finally I would like to wish you all a pleasant autumn & I look forward to your suggestions and contributions for future editions.

Best Wishes,Joanna.

The first fireworks were probably made in China, around 2,000 years ago. Chinese crackers, as they are known, are still used in China today to celebrate weddings, births and religious festivals - and to scare away evil spirits!

Fireworks were used for centuries in ancient Indian and Thai religious ceremonies. Some of the rockets were 8-10 feet long and were attached to bamboo sticks that were 40 feet high.

The first recorded fireworks in England were at the wedding of King Henry VII in 1486. They gained popularity during the reign of Henry VIII and by Elizabethan times (1558-1603) there was a fireworks master. Queen Eliza-beth I created this post so that someone would be in charge of organising firework displays for great occasions. James II even knighted his fireworks master after a particularly excellent show of fireworks at his coronation.

The word for firework in Japanese, ‘hanabi’, means ‘fire-flower’.

Half of all firework accidents happen to children under the age of 16. The first fireworks recorded in America were set off by an Englishman, Cap-tain John Smith, famous in the story of Pocahontas.

Three sparklers burning together generate the same heat as a blow-torch. The world’s largest single firework was set off at a festival in Japan in 1988. The shell weighed over half a tonne and the burst was over a kilometre across.

Throwing a firework in a street or public place is a criminal offence, with a maximum fine of 5000 pounds.

SAFETYFireworks can be great fun!

Unfortunately, every year, people get hurt because they fool around with fire-works. Last year over 900 people required hospital treatment from accidents involving fireworks.

Make sure you’re not one of them by following these few simple rules.Never play with fireworks - They are explosives and can hurt you.

Only adults should light or hold fireworks.

When you are watching fireworks stand well back.

Never go near a firework that has been lit. Even if it hasn’t gone off, it could still explode.

Fireworks will frighten your pets, so keep your pets safely indoors.

If you are given a sparkler: Always wear gloves. Hold it at arm’s length. When your sparkler goes out, DON’T TOUCH IT. It could still burn you, so put it in a bucket of water.

For the sauce• 1 small onion, diced• 2 roasted red peppers, (from a jar)• 2 tbsp tomato purée• juice of 1 orange• 200ml beef stock• 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar• 50g stoned green olives, sliced• spaghetti, to serve

Parmesan and butternut squash soup

Ingredients• 150g parmesan, (parmigiano - reggiano) with rind• 25g butter• 1 large onion, finely chopped• 1 medium butternut squash, peeled, deseeded and chopped into chunks• 900ml hot vegetable stock• 150ml milk• 4 - 6 slices French bread• fresh parsley or thyme, chopped to garnish

Prep time: 15 min Cook time: 30 min Serves: 4-6

Method1. Reserve the rind from the parmesan and cut it into chunks, then finely grate the cheese.2. Melt the butter in a large saucepan, and gently fry the onion for about three minutes,

until softened, but not browned. Add the butternut squash, vegetable stock and parme-san rind. Heat until the mixture is just simmering, then turn the heat to low and cook gently for about 20 minutes, partially covered, until the vegetables are soft and tender.

3. Remove the rind from the saucepan, then transfer the soup to a blender or food proces-sor and add most of the grated cheese, reserving about 25g for garnishing. Blend the soup for 15-20 seconds, until completely smooth. Return it to the saucepan and add the milk. Stir thoroughly and reheat until piping hot. Taste and adjust the seasoning.

4. Meanwhile, toast the slices of french bread, sprinkle the remaining parmesan on top and grill until melted. Ladle the soup into warmed bowls, then top each portion with one piece of toasted french bread. Sprinkle with fresh parsley or thyme and a little extra ground black pepper, then serve.

Halloween Silhouette Window PictureYou will need:Black paperWhite or yellow tissue paperGlitter (optional)Our Halloween templatesScrap paperLaminating sheet

Instructions:

1. Fold the tissue paper in half and cut a semi-circle shape from the centre. Open out the paper so you have a circle.

2. Lay this in the laminating sheet and sprinkle with glitter if you wish. 3. Print and cut out one of our Halloween templates on to the scrap paper. We especially like the

bats and the witch. 4. Use the template to cut out the shape from black paper. 5. Lay the shape over the circle. 6. Close the laminating sheet and ask an adult to carefully feed the picture through a laminator. 7. Trim around the picture, leaving a small edge on the laminated sheet to keep it together.

Instructions:

1. Combine the flour, salt, and water in a bowl. Stir the mixture with a wooden spoon until smooth.2. Divide the dough into 6 equal pieces and shape each into a ghost, flattening the base so it will

stand up.3. Microwave the ghosts on a plate one or two at a time for 20- to 30-second intervals until the

dough is fairly firm (about 1 1/2 to 2 minutes in total). Let the ghosts cool (they can get quite hot).

4. Use a fine-point permanent black marker to draw on eyes and a mouth.

Autism Puzzles was launched on June 1st 2011 and is run by us, Karen Sullivan and Jo Salmon. We both have children with Autism. Autism Puzzles was set up to lend a helping hand to parents/carers whose child has been recently diagnosed with Autism and for those whose children are going through the diagnostic process. We provide 1-2-1 support for parents/carers. Autism Puzzles helps to put you in touch with the right people and sign posts to further support and information. We also hold monthly group support meetings and Pamper days for the parents/carers. Bi-monthly fundraising Quiz Nights are fun and are usually held in the Ty-Nant Pub. We have a popular Facebook group where many parents will support each other in confidence. Every Monday afternoon during the school holidays the group meet at Parc Play.

Autism Puzzles are holding Christmas Magic which is a charity Christmas concert at Caerphilly Castle on December 8th 2011. Caerphilly Male voice choir and Forte School of Music will be performing at the concert and Santa will also be dropping in to give a gift to each child. Tickets are available through Autism Puzzles. Please contact Karen or Jo to book your tickets for the event or if you would like to donate a raffle prize.

Since the launch date we have been busily fundraising in order for us to be able to apply to the Charity Commission to register as an official charity. Thank you to all the kind people that have supported. We are overwhelmed with how big the group is getting.

If you would like to get involved with fundraising or would like to come on board as one of our sponsors then please contact us, we would love to hear from you.

Morganstown Toddler GroupMorganstown Toddler group has been running for several years & in that time hundreds of babies & toddlers have taken full advantage of the play facilities & toys provided. Each time new equipment was needed; Helen, Jayne & Steve would scrimp & save to ensure good quality hard wearing toys & equipment were bought.Recently the team decided to invest in some larger equipment & had their eye on a wooden climbing frame/slide combo. At £1200 it was going to take a lot of saving, so they knew it wouldn’t be something being bought soon! It was then suggested to them to look into applying for a community grant. Jayne was unsure at first as she was worried as a small group they may not be taken seriously or they would need to provide complex accounts for the past x amount of years! When those fears were allayed the team approached Comic Relief & applied for half of the money, the logic being better go for a smaller amount & hope to get that, than the whole lot & possibly get nothing!Helen, Jayne & Steve were thrilled when they were informed their application had been successful & they had been granted £600 toward the climbing frame! The equipment was ordered & used for the first time at a recent toddler session. As you can see from the smiling faces of the boys, they fully approve of the purchase!

There are over 9,000 people living in South Wales who have been diagnosed with breast cancer.Last year, Pink Fridays raised £26,000. This money was spent on supporting local people who have been affected by breast cancer, helping to make their experience a more bearable one.

Meet Cathy Fisher from Cardiff.I had just turned 40 and was diagnosed with breast cancer. I had a lumpectomy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. I lost my hair. It sounds straight forward when you say it like that. In hospital the nurse suggested a shower, she seemed to think I should use baby shampoo to wash my hair, and for some reason I thought that might stop it falling out. The shower was a disaster. As I stood there under the water, the pressure of it pounding on my head made it worse, and I was covered in my own hair. It was wet, and stuck all over me. I got out of the shower and sobbed.I am now a volunteer for Breast Cancer Care, and when I found out about Headstrong, I was very keen to be a part of it. It offers women a personal appointment to choose a scarf that’s right for them and be shown different ways of tying, and being creative with a great variety of designs - it’s a delight to see women leave in a scarf or hair piece that suits her with her head held high feeling pretty. I think headstrong offers a much needed service and when I was going through chemo it would have made a real difference to me both in terms of my appearance and confidence and also my mental state. An hour to chat about some-thing that is not really talked about has a hugely positive psychological effect on the client and their family.

Cardiff HeadStrong runs every Wednesday. It costs just £52 for people like Cathy to receive this support

By holding a Pink Friday you can make a real difference to the lives of people affected by breast cancer.
