WCS students participated in the Terry Fox Run. We raised $2349.70for cancer research! Students in grades 3-8 walked for 45 minutesthrough the neighbouring streets and then ran the perimeter of the

school grounds. All wore "I'm Running For...." stickers and Terry Foxtatoos. We were being the hands and feet of Jesus and we are so

thankful for the support given during this special event.

BOARD NEWS

We would like to extend a warmwelcome to all the new familiesattending Woodstock ChristianSchool this year. A special

welcome to the Korean families. We hope that you will feelblessed and enjoy becoming a part of our school community.Thank you for your continued support and prayers forWoodstock Christian School! We pray for a blessed 2014-2015school year!

Highlights from the board:• Sixth bus route being added partly because of the increased

enrolment in JK.• New HVAC system has been installed over the summer.• We continue to make progress on collecting tuition arrears.

This continues to be a difficult issue to work through, but wehave made a lot of progress in the past year. We ask for yourcontinued prayers.

• There are some new fund-raising projects for this comingyear, one of them was the Family Feast Night, which washeld on October 3, 2014.

• Board and Staff enjoyed a BBQ together on September 26,2014.

• Board retreat is set for October 18, 2014 and the focus ofdiscussion will be strategic planning.

“O Lord our Lord, how majestic is your name in all theearth!”(Psalm 8:1) Our opening chapel on September 2 wasnd

filled with praise as parents, grandparents, friends of ChristianEducation joined staff and students to celebrate the beginning ofa new year. Giving God glory in faith, learning and community,we proclaimed God’s holiness. During the month of September,Psalm 8 was chosen as a whole school memory workassignment- it has been fun walking down the halls early in themorning listening to the voices of students and teachers recitingthis Psalm. “From the lips of children and infants you haveordained praise…” (Psalm 8:2)

186 students are enrolled at WCS this school year, a total of96 families that are investing in giving their children a Christ-centred education. It has been such a blessing to meet newfamilies, glowing with excitement that God has led them to theday that they could enroll their children at WCS. Often withtears in their eyes, they share experiences of their childrentelling them stories of how awesome God is, and that at WCS

they learn (and are allowed to learn!) about this amazing God! Together, parents and teachers partner in giving our children afirm foundation of trust and joy in the Lord. We all look aheadto ‘wonder-filled’ times of being community together- acommunity that shouts out in all we do “The Whole Earth isFilled with the Glory of God!”

Our school’s vision statement declares that we are a“….prayerful, thriving, energetic school community where aChrist-centred education equips our students to lead a life ofChristian service.”

“Prayerful” Twice a month on Wednesday mornings, a groupof parents prayerfully lift the joys and concerns of WCS to God,knowing that the Holy Spirit is leading. We are so thankful fortheir ministry. Each Monday morning and Friday afternoon,WCS staff meet to pray over the school days, the students, thebus drivers, the families and one another. In our classrooms, offices, and Board room we come to God with praises andburdens, knowing that it is God who holds us all and guides usas we do our work. Students are taught how to pray in theirclasses, and it is often they who lead their classmates in prayer. So many, many parents, grandparents and friends tell us againand again that they pray for WCS.

“Energetic” Teachers and students have settled into their newclasses, have established new routines, set high expectations forlearning and built strong support systems to help themexperience success. Morale is high and there is an energy

present that exudes joy. Our newest staffmember, Mr. Axel Hiemstra, is enjoying his work, building relationships with students, preparing andteaching lessons that are relevant and meaningful, while motivating students to learn.

Students are already involved in many extra-curricular activities at WCS alongside theirregular classes. Cross- country, mileage club, soccer, golf, volleyball, drama practises for TheLion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, leadership ofBus Safety Patrollers and Students’ Council givestudents opportunities for growth. We haveparticipated in the Terry Fox National School Runfundraiser for schools, service learning projectsare underway and class trips have begun. Schoolis so much more than the 3R’s!

“Thriving” … through our units of study-History(Canada-the Acadian peoples), Science (Trees,Rocks), Geography (Biomes), Math (Patterns),Reading (Owls in the Family), Writing (Gettingready for Kindergarten book ), Phys Ed (Running,Soccer), Bible (In the Beginning.. God’s gloryfills the Earth!), French (Feelings), Music(Rhythm and Beat through square-dancing)! Students and teachers alike recognize the links inlearning, tying different subjects together, uncovering the truths that God has His thumbprinton everything in their learning. Each student hashis/her own strengths in how they learn, and areoften encouraged to pick activities that best helpthem to master concepts. The classrooms buzzwith excitement as students work in groups to dotheir work. And then, there are those blissful, quiet times when students are bent over theirwork, individually completing assignments orreading a book. Professional Development is key to ‘growing’ thestaff, and this past summer teachers tookadvantage of great online courses, courses at RUCand at other universities. This fall, under theleadership of the OACS Director of Learning,Justin Cook, using the book “An Ethic ofExcellence” by Ron Berger as a guide, we arefocusing on excellence- asking ourselves what doexcellence in school culture, in teaching and inlearning for WCS look like. Together we have seta number of goals to strive for and we continuethe discussion of implementation with itssuccesses and challenges at our monthly staffmeetings, in our division meetings and in ourcommunities of learning groups. Recently, teachers were blessed to attend a day-longworkshop by Dr. Peg Dawson, psychologist andauthor of books such as “Scattered but Smart” inwhich she taught us how to nurture growth inexecutive skills, skills that students need tofunction independently. They include planning, organization, task initiation and sustained

attention, goal-setting, decision-making, and problem solving. As educators,we gained an appreciation for different kinds of learners and were offeredstrategies for how best to meet the needs of our students. In our communitiesof learning, staff are challenged to vision together with Board of Directorsand school community in “providing Christ-centred quality elementaryeducation to equip our students (children) for a life of praise and service toGod.” (WCS Mission Statement) This is never stagnant- we will have never‘arrived’, but will continue to develop each year.

“School Community” This summer, the property and maintenance team didsome amazing work at WCS. A new heating/cooling system was installedservicing the north end of the school, library renovations were begun, andmany maintenance items were completed. Janitors spent hours scrubbing, andon opening day the school shone. A new bus was purchased and thetransportation committee worked hard to set up six bus routes so that theschool community could be better served in bringing children to and fromschool. The fundraising team held another successful golf tournament this pastsummer and are now planning for the annual Winterfest Auction. The OnceAgain Upscale Resale store hopes to re-open its doors soon, offering a lightto the community, as well as lots of bargains. From bus drivers, to janitors, to volunteers, to board members, to committees,to teachers and students, to support staff, to administration, to lawn/gardenservice providers, to people who come in to buy vouchers and attend chapels,to those who generously donate their time, energy and money, we all togethermake up the community that strives to provide “a Christ-centred educationwhich equips our students to lead a life of Christian service.” And we pledgeto do it all to the Glory of our God! It is October, the season in which we focus on giving thanks… I thank God forblessing the Woodstock Christian School community with His leading as weonce again entrust this school year to Him. Happy Thanksgiving!

Receiving donations on:Wednesdays, Thursdays & Fridays from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.and on Thursday evenings from 6 - 9 p.m.

We are hoping to be back in business very soon!! It has been along 6 months, but in the end, we are coming out with a fresh outlookand freshened up store!

We have been open a few days a week to accept donations andwe are so thankful for what has been given. People have beenworking tirelessly to get the store ready, hanging shelves, putting

together racks, cleaning windows, organizing and sorting donations…the list goes on. We cannot wait to be back into the swing of thingsand we will be celebrating with all of you! Please come check us outthis fall, we'll have lots to share with you and the great deals arestacking up already!

If you think that you'd like to volunteer at the store, we'd love totalk with you. It doesn't have to be a huge commitment, perhaps acouple hours a week or every other week. You may be surprised andfind that you love the retail aspects of it, or perhaps you would prefersome behind the scenes. We have enough jobs for any preference. One area that we are in need of is a "handy man" of sorts. Sometimesthere are just a few things that need to be fixed or looked at, and weneed some someone with some experience. You don't have to be aprofessional, just willing and able and handy.

Again, thank you for your continued support. We are thankful toGod for seeing us through this "bump" in the road and we are excitedto see what He has in store for us. What a story for our community, tosee how we can take a fire disaster and keep our heads turnedupwards. We know there's a plan and we are willingly walking forward. Join us.

SENIOR KINDERGARTEN – MRS. LINDA WESTERVELD

& GRADE 5 – MRS. TRACY BULTHUIS (Teacher buddies)

BUDDIES

"Hey, there's my buddy", or "Hey, buddy". These are phrases that you will hear in the gymbefore assemblies, in the halls, on the playground, in church and occasionally at Wal-Mart. Buddiesare an important, valuable part of our Woodstock Christian School community.

There are many definitions of the word buddy, but one that we thought was interesting was ..."either of two persons paired off in a partnership arrangement for mutual help and protection...."

Our buddy system helps children of all ages increase confidence, develop leadership skills, improve and develop social interactions, master concepts, teach and review skills, and develop

self-regulation. More importantly our buddies demonstrate and receive acceptance from each other. Even though our buddies havebeen assigned to each other based on academic needs, interests and personalities, they develop a loyalty and a love of each other. It is so heart warming to see the older students nurture, protect and help their buddies. Often, safe comfortable relationships develop. What a blessing these are. And what a model of how Christ calls us to live in community!

Our buddies try to meet once a week. This year we have played together in the sandbox, taught and reviewed letters, enjoyedbooks together, and explored patterns together. Our first activity was a photo booth, followed by interviews .Enjoy the thoughtfulquestions and answers of our grade 5 and SK students.
