What is a Miniature?A miniature issomething that ismuch smaller thannormal, especially asmall replica or model.ere’s a wholecollection of miniaturerooms and houses atthe MSV. ey look alot like dollhouses, butthere are no dollsinside. Miniatures areactually works of artwhere the artists makevery small versions ofreal-life objects ingreat detail. Miniatureart isn’t new and it isn’tlimited to tiny houses.Artists have beenmaking miniature art for more than 1,000 years. Examples include miniaturebooks, manuscripts, and portraits. Before cameras or cell phones existed, artists painted small portraits of people so they could be easily carried. eMSV has a miniature portrait that is almost 200 years old. e portrait is inthe Shenandoah Valley Gallery. Visit and see if you can Xnd it. If you couldmake anything in miniature, what would you create?

Cool Facts:People have been making gingerbread fora very long time. e oldest recipes dateback more than 4,000 years to ancientGreece. Gingerbread houses originated inGermany in the 1500s. ey started tobecome popular about 200 years ago whenthe Brothers Grimm wrote their story“Hansel and Gretel” about two childrenwho get lost in the woods and Xnd a housemade entirely of delicious treats. Since1969, pastry chefs at the White Househave made a fancy gingerbread house forthe holidays. e world’s biggestgingerbread house was made in Texas in2013. It was made of more than 4,000gingerbread bricks and was about the sizeof a tennis court! ere is a NationalGingerbread House competition heldevery year in Asheville, North Carolina.Ask a grown up to bring you to the MSVto practice making gingerbread housesduring Gallery Explorers on December 17or December 21. Maybe someday you canenter the competition!

Tiny Glen BurnieHave you seen the miniature of theMSV Glen Burnie House? It isinside a display case in the diningroom of the house. is miniatureshows what Glen Burnie lookedlike before it was part of theMuseum. e miniature wasassembled by a man named R. LeeTaylor. Mr. Taylor used to live inthe Glen Burnie House. He hiredthe very best miniature artisans toreplicate everything that was in the house. It took almost ten years to create.Mr. Taylor created and furnished other miniature houses and rooms. Visitthe MSV and see the miniatures!

Holiday FunMr. Taylor used to decorate the GlenBurnie Miniature for the holidays. Hewould put wreaths on the doors and, inthe house, decorate a tiny Christmas treeand put presents under it. Mr. Taylor alsoliked to create special miniature housesfor the holidays – out of candy! Hisholiday houses were 100% edible andranged in size from small to large.

Here are some pieces of miniature furniture at the MSV. Look at the carvingand the detail and compare the size of the chest and chair to the size of thepostage stamp. Now look at a life-size chair in your house and imagine it nextto a stamp! Photo by Ron Blunt.

This is a picture of the official White House gingerbread house in2003. It was made of 80 pounds of gingerbread and 45 pounds
