A Word from Pastor Anita Beste
Throughout November we will be Celebrating Generosity –
God’s generous gift of forgiveness and hope and blessing for the sake of the world;
Your generous giving to and through your congregation; and
Prince of Peace’s generous outpouring of worship and care,
mission and ministry together!
Because God has made a difference in your life, you are helping to make a difference in God’s world.
Thank you!
With the gifts of your time, your talent, and your money, you have supported the gathering and
nurturing of God’s people in this body of Christ called Prince of Peace. And you have supported God’s
will and work in the world beyond our walls.
On Sunday, November 15th, we will gather for one packed and celebratory 9:30 worship service
to give thanks for all that generosity. As part of worship that day each of us is being asked to bring our
Estimate of Giving for 2016—as an act of participation in the generous giving and receiving this life of
faith brings us to. Many, many, many of us give generously—either in the offering plate or through
automatic giving. But not all of us turn in an Estimate of Giving. This year we’d like to improve that—
because it’s good for you and good for God’s mission through the church to practice that commitment.
So for your consideration, I share with you the article below adapted from the ELCA website on—
Why Estimate Giving? [Adapted from the ELCA website]
Estimates of Giving are important in the life of our church today. The rapid change taking place in the
world and the needs of the world make it very important that I develop a plan for proportionate giving
to and through my church, write down my weekly intention, and put my name to it in order to:
Celebrate God’s Generosity
I know that the discipline of making an estimate and sticking to it is in direct response to a
loving God whose care and power and grace flows through my life.
In estimating my giving I make an effort to show just how much God is the God of my life,
and in growing in my commitment each year I give external evidence of my internal priorities.
I put God first. I risk in faith. I trust in God to provide.
My estimate is free and open, and can change if my circumstances change. My congregation
believes that it expresses my hopes and cares for ministry that proclaim Christ’s love for the world.
Make a Difference through Prince of Peace’s Ministry
God is important in my life and my personal support of our Lord’s ministry is a way to make
a difference in the world.
I believe that our church’s leadership can make meaningful decisions concerning ministry
in conjunction with knowing what can be expected in support of those ministries.
The programs for ministry that my congregation and my church at large provide for me and
my family are important in my life, and anything so important takes planning and commitment.
Grow in Spiritual Growth and Faith Formation
God gives me the grace to give, and that grace moves me to make a firm commitment
to my church—contributing a portion of my time, talents and financial blessings for
our Lord’s mission and ministry.
God has asked for my commitment—not just that I give—but that I be committed to justice
and mercy and faith in all the world. An Estimate of Giving enables me to be truly intentional
about my own personal stewardship.
Growing in my giving enables me to experience even more spiritual growth and joy in giving!

October—November 2015
On Rally Day, we had two very special guests join us for worship and adult forum.
Principal Becky Berkas from Central Park Elementary, led the Children’s Sermon and
adult forum. Rob Williams, the Executive Director of The Sheridan Story, shared his
reflection during the offering about what his organization does in partnering churches
and schools. As a congregation, we talked about being
committed to the school and how that partnership looks like.
This commitment comes out of our budget, which you generously
contribute to, but there are more kids that need food than what we
could initially plan for. In fact, as we partnered with enCompass
Church, we each agreed to sponsor 25 kids. Five days before the
first time we delivered food, we learned that 27 more kids had
signed up, bringing the total to 77 students.
The other catch? The school only asked the K-2nd grade students, meaning only half of the
student body had a chance to sign up and potentially many more would benefit from having
additional food on the weekend.
The group of Paul Sponheim, Gary Olson, Jennifer Duncan,
and Julie Lentz, in partnership with the Social Concerns
committee (which graciously looked at other benevolences
and shifted funds to be able to allocate $1,500), decided that
we couldn’t help pay for the additional 27 kids. Not right now.
But we did think that covering ten more would be possible.
enCompass Church is also hoping to make the decision to
support ten. Rob told us that if we can cover the majority of
the additional students, he could help cover a few of the kids
too—so by next week, there is a chance all 77 students will
be able to receive this meal.
The one thing this process has shown me is that the need in
our neighborhood is even larger than we could have anticipated. The grace and courage that
you, Prince of Peace, have shown through your participation is fantastic! We are looking for
volunteers, but we also are asking you to thoughtfully consider making a designated gift to
support this partnership. Rob provided us a link to make online designations. These can be
recurring or one-time gifts. You can invite your friends who value this community to support
these kids too. Send them the link: http://www.thesheridanstory.com/princeofpeace
If you have a neighbor who is passionate about feeding kids and you need help telling the
story, the video that Rob showed is also an effective resource. Here is the link to his video
telling the story of Sheridan and Jordan, one of at least 212,000 children in the state of
Minnesota who suffer from food insecurity, http://www.thesheridanstory.com/video-jordan/.
Now, you have heard the vision. You see what we’re doing. Do you want to get involved?
Email Jennifer Duncan at [email protected] to find out the volunteer needs
at Central Park Elementary. You can make a difference in a child’s life. You can reflect
God’s love out into this world.
Thank you and God bless for all that you are doing, Prince of Peace.

Confirmation and Youth
October—November 2015
Confirmation and youth group are underway for the fall!
What are we doing in confirmation?
We’re looking at the promises
made by parents/sponsors at baptism:
to live with them among God’s faithful people,
bring them to the word of God and the holy supper,
teach them the Lord’s Prayer, the Creed,
and the Ten Commandments,
place in their hands the holy scriptures,
nurture them in faith and prayer, so that your children
may learn to trust God,
proclaim Christ through word and deed,
care for others and the world God made,
and work for justice and peace.
In Confirmation, we will go through what each of these responsibilities mean for the students.
Each week, they will have a chance to discuss the topic with me and then work with Christina
Meline, a college student who is serving as an in-class mentor, to dig deeper and to journal about
what they’re learning. Each week, they will have questions to talk about with a parent/mentor
before returning to class the following week. It is very important that this conversation is an
open place for dialogue and it is ok if they don’t know “all the answers.”
Our High School Youth Group is working on the
Spooky Music concert and putting together a few acts
to make the show spooky and fun for the kids. You’ll
have to come on Wed., Oct 28th, to see what they
come up with. We’re also excited for the return of
Mark Hanson, our guest organist. The Free Will
offering for Spooky Music will go towards the
weekend food program at Central Park Elementary!

When my youngest son was about six months old, we enrolled him in parent/child
education classes. I remember the teacher suggesting to the group that we create a
park and play calendar. As you can imagine, being new moms, we were all reluctant.
She pulled out a blank calendar and said, "Pick a Tuesday or Thursday,” and we did.
Fast forward nine years, the same group — six families still get together at least once a
month or more. We often joke that our kids are more like siblings than friends because of the
way they interact with one another, they just know each other that well. These families have
become part of our circle of friends and families that we trust and love.
Who would have guessed that a calendar and play dates would create long lasting
bonds between children and parents?
It is my hope that various opportunities for kids and families here at Prince of Peace
help to create and foster life long relationships. We had an amazing summer and it was so fun
to see the kids interact at VBS, Sparklers, and Little Sparks.
As Fall has returned, it has also been fun to see parents interact with one another and
catch up. Just as our child/parent teacher encouraged us to get a calendar out and fill in the
dates; I encourage each family to get the calendar out and find activities to get involved in at
church. Find ways to connect with each other.
I also encourage everyone to reach out to others outside of your close-knit circle; invite
them to a Mom's group, Family Fun Night, or Wednesday Night Dinner. After all, we all need
to eat and who knows how your invitation will impact someone's day in a positive way.
A couple of opportunities that are coming up in October are Children's Sabbath on Oct.
11, and Spooky Music on Oct. 28. We are asking for families to get involved during worship
on Oct. 11. We need greeters and ushers. If your family would like to participate, please
contact me. Also, many of you have attended Spooky Music, and we encourage you to invite
a friend or a neighbor. The more the merrier, right?

Stewardship at Prince of Peace is more than financial giving. It is about helping all of us
grow in our relationship with Jesus through the use of time, talents and treasure God has
entrusted to us. That is, stewardship is about our response to God’s grace and love. It is a
celebration of God’s generosity first, and then our generosity at Prince of Peace for all that
we do in response. So, your Stewardship Committee has named the fall 2015 stewardship
campaign, “Celebrate Generosity.”
When the Stewardship Committee, Barry Brahier, Ruth Hagander, Diane Dodge, Pastor John Klawiter and
myself gathered at the beginning of the year, we envisioned stewardship as more than money, instead we
think of stewardship as a defining way of leading a Christ-filled life. We want to “tell” all of us of the
opportunities to live out God’s plan through all the resources that have been entrusted to us. We want to
inspire everyone by “telling” more stories of how God’s mission is advanced in the life of individual
members, in the ministries at Prince of Peace, in our local community and around God's world. We want to
“Thank” everyone for all that you do to advance God’s mission and your contagious generosity of time,
talent and treasure. We want to continue to “Ask” for more of everyone's time, talent and treasure. And, we
want to encourage all of us to “Pray, Pray and Pray.”
While stewardship is not all about money, it is an important component of advancing God’s mission and
we should not shy away from acknowledging this. Prince of Peace has an incredible culture of generosity.
We are approaching the end of a Capital Campaign, “Rooted in the Faith, Reaching for the Future,” that
raised over half a million dollars over three years. Thank you. We are now better positioned to sustain
another half a century of mission at Prince of Peace. We have an immensely generous congregation that does
so much with so little. We want to celebrate your generosity this fall and throughout next year.
We are kicking off “Celebrate Generosity” with the following events.
November 1st: Celebration Generosity Kick-off—Adult education hour and distribution
of time and talent surveys and commitment letters.
November 15th: Commitment Sunday
November 15th: Fellowship Brunch to celebrate our congregation's generosity.
Small group in-home meals: Call the office or look for sign-ups on the church’s bulletin board
What can you do?
Prayerfully consider how God is calling you to respond with your time, talent and treasure
as a response to God’s generosity of love and grace.
Tell us stories about how you are celebrating generosity at Prince of Peace, at home,
your vocation, your local or global communities.
Help us thank those at Prince of Peace who are generously giving to God’s mission.
Host a small group meal at your home (please contact me for details).
Pray, Pray and Pray.
We are convinced that people do not give generously for budgets or maintenance but for mission.
Time, talent and treasure follows mission and not the other way around. We want our giving to make a
difference and our lives count best when we direct them to God’s mission. God has called Prince of Peace
to mission and we at Prince of Peace have the vision of mission and the capacity to heed that calling.
God is generous and abundant. Let us celebrate and respond generously.
Thank you for all that you do, On behalf of the Stewardship Committee

Wednesday Night Suppers
One of the final four hymns from the Hymn Bracket Challenge this summer was “What a
Friend We Have in Jesus.” This hymn talks about taking everything to the Lord in prayer. No
matter how great that sounds there are times when that doesn’t always heal the pain, for me.
What do we do then?
John talked about “Who has your back” in his sermon on Sept 13th. For me, there are times
when I need that personal touch. When I think of everyone that “has my back”, I am overwhelmed. I feel
God’s presence through all of them and thus the multitude of prayers. As Christians we are part of God’s
family. I think this is very important to keep in mind. While we all need our private time with God, we are
part of a loving community.
In Dave Scherer’s book “Agap-ology” Dave talks about a girl that had an eating disorder. She talks about
never being thin enough, pretty enough, holy enough and just never enough for this person or group.
How many of us know someone that is in need and really hurting. Can God be enough for them? I think
they need their Christian family in those dark times. What happens when it’s their Christian family that is
making them feel the way they do? How do we respond? What can we do? We aren’t all trained for these
circumstances, but we are all given the ability to act with love.
The saying “We are the body of Christ” comes to mind when I think about how to respond in various
circumstances. We are Christ’s eye’s, hands, voice, ears etc… . We can be God’s calming voice.
We can be a person’s answer to their prayer. We can be the hope they need to see.
Who has your back? Whose back can you have?
The refrain of ELW 708 “Jesu, Jesu, Fill Us with Your Love” is
“Jesu, Jesu, fill us with your love,
show us how to serve the neighbors we have from you.”
My prayer is that we all are someone who has “someone’s back” and have people who have “our back.”
May God bless us all, Milty

Peggy Wiltse and Paul Sponheim will co-lead this
book study on Marcus Borg’s book. The book is
readily available, and copies will be available at
Prince of Peace for purchase at a discounted price.
This book presents Borg’s personal journey, while
recapping the major insights of his other works.
Marcus Borg came out of a traditional Lutheran
background in a small North Dakota town. He
studied at Concordia College (Moorhead), Union
Seminary in New York City, and received his
doctorate in New Testament at Oxford. He went
through a period of agnosticism and emerged as a
leader in the fostering of progressive Christianity.
Marcus Borg died in January, 2015.
Borg was one of the most public faces of the Jesus
seminar, a renewed quest for the “historical
Jesus.” He presented a Jesus who is a prophetic
wisdom teacher, who is crucified as a
troublemaker to Roman rule and emphasizes the
“Christ of faith” who still invigorates persons for
a transforming life of service.
For October 11th, the focus is on chapters one
through three. This section includes discussion of
