Members of the APNC will be responsible for recommending the church's next Associate Pastor for Faith Formation. Faith formation is the encouragement and support for all ages to develop and strengthen their faith through Christian education, spiritual nurture and growth, and small group study. This Associ-ate Pastor position will be charged with overseeing the faith formation of a broad cross section of the church to include the preschool program, child, youth and adult programs.

John Bragg is married to Catherine and they have four children that are active in the youth group and life of the church. Frank is in 12th grade, James is in 10th, Martha Kate is in 9th, and Alice is in 7th grade at the Community School of Davidson. John is a native of Charlotte and grew up at St. John’s Baptist Church where his grandfather, Dr. Claude Broach, served as pastor for 30 years. He and Catherine moved to Davidson in 1998 and joined DCPC shortly thereafter. John has served as an Elder at DCPC, and on the Personnel, Young Families, Westminster, Planning, and Membership committees and has served as a Confirmation mentor. He is an Eagle Scout and is in his 7th year serving as the Scoutmaster of Troop 58. John works in Charlotte with Bragg Financial Advisors, an investment management firm serving high net worth families, endowments and institutions.

David Tinkler and his wife Brigid have been members of DCPC for 15 years. They are the parents of Joel, Erin and Laura. David is an attorney for Bank of America. He has served DCPC as an elder and a deacon on the Membership and Fellowship Committees, as a Middle School Sunday School teacher, and as a member of the committee that selected Bill Cockrill as Interim Minister. In his spare time, David enjoys politics and Davidson College basketball. He looks forward to serving on the APNC to be part of the continuing tradition of members’ involvement in the life and work of DCPC, for which he is grateful.

Brian Kissel feels called to serve the church as a member of the Associate Pastor Nominating Committee. He has devoted his professional life to education and believes working with chil-dren—helping to shape their personal, emotional, and spiritual growth—is an important mission of the church. He is excited to find someone to serve as Associate Pastor who feels similarly about this important mission.

Professionally, Brian is an Associate Professor of Reading and Elementary Education at the Uni-versity of North Carolina at Charlotte. He conducts research in the area of early literacy and teaches undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral courses in literacy education. Prior to moving to the Lake Norman area, he lived in Charlottesville, Virginia where he attended the University of

Virginia and graduated with a Ph.D in Education. Brian grew up in Orlando, Florida. He loves to travel, read (mostly nonfiction), hike, and spend time with his family either at the beach or in the mountains.

Brian is the husband of Hattie Kissel—a preschool teacher at DCPC. In fact, they both met as teachers at the same school back in the late 90s. They have three children: Charlie and Ben (twins in first grade) and Harriet (a kinder-gartener). They are all graduates of DCPC’s preschool and are currently students at the Community School of Da-vidson. They love being members of this wonderful place.

Jane Holland is

a wife, mother, grandmother and retired special education teacher a child of the church, who lived in New York for many years before returning home a former session member, chair of Christian Education and current moderator of Presby-terian Women

a life-long learner who passionately believes that faith must be nurtured through study, worship, service and fellowship

Mary Kim Folds Grew up in Davidson and DCPC.-Her father taught math at the college for 40 years. Her moth-er also grew up here as the daughter of a Davidson math professor (fun fact!)-Undergraduate: Davidson College, Graduate: UNC-Chapel Hill-Taught high school history in Charlotte-Married Jim Folds who grew up in Chapel Hill and graduated from Sewanee-Moved back to Davidson in 2002. -Now raising their two children here: James (14) and Mary Patrick (11)-Personal in-terests include horsemanship and running

“DCPC played an important role in my growing up years. The values I have today were nur-tured by the very positive role models I had in the staff and adults in the congregation. How fortunate I am to still live among so many of these good people who, by example more than anything, taught me, and still teach me, how to follow the teachings of Jesus.

My desire is for my children to share in this DCPC experience. At this particular stage in their lives they will be more receivers than givers. Therefore my wish is that our new AP will be another one of many strong, positive, engaging, caring and exciting role models at DCPC for their development as Christians.

The call to serve on this committee, or really any call to serve, is for me an affirmation of God's love and an oppor-tunity to exercise my hope. Again, my life is redirected towards that which feeds us. I am grateful.”

Rob Collier moved to Davidson from Charlotte in 2000 and became an official member of DCPC in 2002. He has three children currently in grades 7, 10 and 12, and heeding the advice of his father, has attempted to spend as much quality time as possible with them. This has consequently evolved into taking on many volunteer roles involving chil-dren from diapers to diplomas. He has previously served DCPC as an elementary Sunday School “Shepherd”, facilitator for the former high school Sunday School class, and as con-firmation class mentor. He is in his 7th year as a Youth Group Advisor, having had the privilege of leading four different classes of youth. He is busy as an Assistant Scoutmaster with Troop 58 in Davidson and has been active in the Scouting program for the past 11 years, serving in multiple capacities due to an inability to say no. Through all of his various roles, he has ardently worked to lead and connect with children of all grade levels.

Rob grew up in small-town Ohio and moved to Charlotte in 1987 out of fear of cold weath-er and unemployment. He has been office manager for a small firm in Charlotte for the past 26 years. He has at-tempted to maintain interests in railroading, history and those ancient relics known as books.

Hi! I'm Diana Merrifield and I love this congregation. My family and I have been members for almost eight years, which is how long we have lived in Davidson. We moved here from Alexan-dria, Virginia, where I worked for the United States House Of Representatives, met my husband of 27 years and had my three babies. I grew up in Southern California and try to get back there to visit my mom as often as I can. My three "babies" are 20, 18, and 16 now, and have enjoyed the youth program here where I have focused most of my efforts at church, as an elder and a volunteer. I love how DCPC loves and serves God's people in this community and elsewhere, tries new things in worship, and nurtures and learns from one another, modeling Jesus' love for us. Free time? Well, I love travel and really good food. I'm really good at listening to live music but awful at book clubs. I try to be a really good friend, and find time to laugh out loud whenever possible.

Leah Oldenburg has been a member of DCPC since 2006 Served on the following: co-chair of VBS, chair of VBS, Tic Toc Leader, Sunday School Art Teacher, Sunday School Shepard, Co-Chair of Congregational Care, Deacon, Career Transition Team, Flower Committee.

I am married to Scott Oldenburg and we have two children, Paige who is 11 and Hap who is 10. We live on Lake Norman Terrell. I worked in the banking industry for 15 years and am now a recruiter for King's College.

The Campus Ministry Committee had a busy month as Davidson students re-turned to campus.

We held the Lemonade Move-In on Wednesday, August 20. Despite a rainstorm of Biblical proportions, we still managed to serve lemonade to at least a handful of incoming freshmen as they moved into Belk and Richardson dorms.

Rain also threatened the Welcome Back Picnic on Sunday, August 25th, but the sun came out just as the 11:00 service ended, and the event went off like clockwork. The Campus Min-istry and Fellowship Committees joined forces to serve a full house of DCPC members and Davidson students, while Roxology provided music. Stephanie Sorge Wing, our Associate Pastor for Campus Min-istry shared information with students about DCPC, Westminster Fellowship, and the Adopt-a-Student program. Overall, it was a great event and a terrific kickoff for the fall!

Finally, as Westminster Fellowship begins a new year, the Campus Ministry Committee is asking for volunteers to provide dinner (an entre e, salad, and dessert) one Monday a month in the Student Cen-ter. For more information and to sign up, follow this link http://www.signupgenius.com/go/30e0e4baeaa2aa64-dinner and choose a date! ~ Bob Cameron

Community Missions

DCPC 12th Annual Day of Service

Saturday, November 7th (8:30am-1:00 p.m.)

Here’s a great opportunity to help others in our Community who need a helping hand while getting to know other DCPC and DUMC members better. We have projects for everyone – pruning shrubs, planting trees, making sandwich-es that will go to Urban Ministries in Charlotte for immediate use, cleaning and stocking food pantries, helping install doors and baseboards in a Habitat house. These are some of the wonderful opportunities that await you. Whether you have experience in that area or not, we welcome you! Children over the age of 6 are very welcome to help with their parents and only a few agencies have age restrictions (which are listed).

***If you cannot help that day, consider donating a loaf of bread for the group making sandwiches for Urban Minis-tries. Drop it by the Church anytime the week of November 2nd.

Last year over 200 people rolled up their sleeves and got to work. New friendships were made and new skills learned. Some of our friends at DUMC will join us to help out and then we have the opportunity to help them in the spring at their Day of Service.

Some of the agencies we will be helping are: Ada Jenkins, Mooresville Soup Kitchen, Habitat, Hope House, Serenity House, Urban Ministries, Bailey Middle School, Davidson-Cornelius Child Development Center, Angels & Sparrows Soup Kitchen, and more.

Sign up through the Site “Sign Up Genius”. By clicking here or the picture on the right, you will be able to look at the various projects that are available and sign up for exactly what you want to do. It’s quick and easy. If you prefer, there will be forms available at the Church on our Day of Service board. Please feel free to ask a friend to help out. Many hands make light work.

Details: Our day will start at 8am with donut holes and coffee donated by our friends at Summit. We will hold a brief worship service led by Robert Alexander and will then head out into the community. A complimentary drop-in lunch prepared by our fabulous Presbyterian Women will be waiting for us in the Congregation House when we return from our job sites.

Childcare will be provided for children under the age of 6.

Please consider giving a few hours of your time to make a very big impact in our Community.

If you have questions, please contact Charlotte Griffith at [email protected] (704-579-9547).

Intercessory Prayer

WEDNESDAY MORNING INTERCESSORY PRAYER TIME Have you or someone you know received a note from the church indicating that prayers have been offered on your behalf? Have you wondered who is pray-ing? For whom? Have you longed to deepen your own prayer life?

For more than nineteen years at 11:30 AM each Wednesday morning people have gathered, at first in Lingle Chapel and now in the parlor, for a 30-minute period of silent prayer. This time of corporate intercessory and personal prayer is mostly a time of silence, a sacred time to join with a quiet mind and heart in prayer for others.

Each person who attends receives a copy of the prayer concerns for that day. Many of these are ongoing; some are quite immediate. Some inspire prayers of thanksgiving. Some are dire needs – of in-dividuals and of communities. Each is known to God, and for each we pray. The concerns come from the prayer request cards which are in the pew racks, from the ministers and other members of the church staff, and from many other sources. By no means are the concerns limited to those who are members of DCPC. All requests and concerns are treated with respectful sensitivity. Where confidentiality has been requested, that is honored.

Following a very brief opening prayer or Scripture reading or meditation offered by the weekly leader, participants engage in prayer in silence. A brief closing word is spoken at 12:00.

You are invited to become part of this ministry of care. Come to the parlor on any Wednesday morning and participate in this corporate experience. Persons who cannot be present in the parlor also can and do join from their workplaces, their homes, their hospital beds, pausing at 11:30 to offer pray-ers of intercession and petition. All are united through the grace of the Holy Spirit. The commitment is simply to open one’s heart in prayer and to join one’s prayers with those of many others.

Our Lord prays for us and He calls upon us to pray for one another. Therefore, come, be silent, pray. Do so in the promise that “where two or three are gathered in my name, I am there among them.” Accept the gracious privilege and the holy obligation to remember one another in prayer.

Friends, come. Let us pray together. ~Jean Jackson

Faith & Families

We believe that families are up against a lot in today's world. It is important for parents to have the sup-port, the information, and the resources that they need to be faithful followers of Jesus Christ and to help their children grow in faith. Welcome to Faith and Families - a community of parents at Davidson College Presbyterian Church. Click here to view past Faith & Family Newsletters on our website.

JOIN US FOR OUR 1st Faith & Family Monthly Gathering October 11th from 5:30 – 6:30 p.m.

While youth are at dinner, youth group, Roxology, hanging out, etc. and children are in programs de-signed especially for them in Jetton Hall and the nursery, parents are invited to gather in Room 201 for a study and conversation entitled “Fall Into a Healthy Home.” We will consider patterns in our homes and in our lives that lend lead us to spiritual, physical, and emotional health. We will consider encouraging words from scripture as well as practical resources that are available to assist us. We will have time to share our own struggles and successes as well as pray for one another. We hope to see you on October 11th!

Music Ministry

Organ at Davidson - Next: Monday, Oct. 19

Asheville Organist Offers Variety in Davidson's Popular Series Dr. William Jeffrey (Jeff) Jones, Director of Music Ministry at Grace Covenant Presbyterian Church in Asheville, is the featured artist in the Organ at Da-vidson's 10th season on Monday, Oct. 19 at 7:30 in the sanctuary. A meet-the-artists reception, sponsored by Friends of the Organ, is held in the church parlor immediately after the program.

Dubois' "Grand Choer" and George Shearing's "Amazing Grace" will bookend selections by Arnold, J.S. Bach and Alain for the first half of the guest artist's program. After a brief intermission Dr. Jones begins with Wely's "Sortie III" followed by "Three Floral Preludes" of Gawthrop, a transcription of "Gabriel's Oboe" and concludes with the magnificent "Carillon de Westminster" by Vierne.

Prior to Dr. Jones' arrival in Asheville he served the Presbyterian Church of Danville, Kentucky for 18 years. He was on the faculty of Centre College and the Assistant Director and Accompanist for the Kentucky Bach Choir. He previously served churches in Savannah, Georgia and Connecticut.

A graduate of Cincinnati Christian University, Dr. Jones holds graduate degrees from Mercer University and The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary from which he holds a DMA in Church Music.

As a church musician Dr. Jones has focused on hymnody and congregational singing. His published works deal with hymnody and worship. Leadership positions have been with the American Guild of Organists and the Pres-byterian Association of Musicians. Solo recitals have been performed in Georgia, Kentucky, Washington, D.C., NYC and Vienna, Austria.

All 2016 Organ at Davidson events are scheduled on Monday evenings--Jan. 11, Feb. 8 and March 14--but the final and

special event in 2015, with Silent Film Improvisor Dorothy Papadakos, is slated for Friday, Nov. 13. She will accompa-

ny the 1925 silent film "Phantom of the Opera" starring Lon Chaney. This event is also co-sponsored by American

Circle Meetings

Circles are groups of women…and men... who meet monthly for fellowship, and Bi-ble or book study. Membership is open to all church members. There are many who believe that the future of the church is built on small groups studying and worshiping together.

We invite anyone interested in visiting or joining one of the circles to contact PW Co-Moderators Jane Holland ([email protected] ) or Mary Mac Kincaid ([email protected] ). Many circles will be using the Hori-zons Bible Study, Come to the Waters, while others are reading books or short stories together.

Senior Adult Ministry

Stephen Ministry

Do You Know Someone Who Is Hurting? If you know someone—perhaps a friend, neighbor, coworker, or relative—who is going through a diffi-cult time, there’s a wonderful way you can help them receive the care and support they need. Tell them about Stephen Ministry! Our Stephen Ministers have received 50 hours of training to provide high-quality, confidential, one-to-one, Christian care to hurting people. Stephen Ministers meet weekly with their care receivers to listen, care, encourage, and provide emotional and spiritual support. (Males are matched with males, and females are matched with females.) The caring relationship lasts for as long as the person needs care. It’s free, and it’s a powerful way you can help a hurting friend. To learn how to connect someone you know with a Stephen Minister, talk with one of our Stephen Minis-try Leaders: Alice Sudduth (704-609-0772 or [email protected]), Mary Thornberry ([email protected]) and Jenny Alexander ([email protected]). Our DCPC Stephen Ministers are here to provide care.

Women Invited to Shalom Women seeking a time of fellowship and study with other women are encouraged to consider Shalom. A group of all ages, members take turns facilitating the study and dis-cussion. The course of study ranges from books of the Bible to current titles that merit reading, reflection and discussion. The group is currently reading “Fresh Air – the Holy Spirit for an Inspired Life” by Jack Levison. Shalom meets at 9:30 Monday mornings in room 207. It’s informal and you’re welcome to come and go as needed. This small group of about 15 is a wonderful place to get to know other women, deepen your faith, and share joys and concerns. You’ll be greeted with warm smiles and kind hearts. For questions, feel free to contact Carolyn Noell at [email protected] or 704-892-0020

Jean Johnston Day

Thanks so much to all involved for the joyous celebration of my re-tirement at the September 27th worship service. I will certainly en-joy attending the Charlotte Symphony concerts which you have made possible with your gifts. It has been a privilege and pleasure to serve the members and ministry of DCPC. I look forward to worshipping and serving together with DCPC members for many years to come.

October SteepleTalk 2015 17

World Communion Sunday The first Sunday in October is designated as World Communion Sunday, which celebrates our oneness in Christ with all our brothers and sisters around the world. Paul tells us that we are to “discern the body” when we partake of Holy Communion, mindful that we note our relationship to all our brothers and sisters in Christ in the celebration. One is not to go hun-gry while another is drunk! (I Cor. 11:21). This is scandalous behavior op-posed to the Way of Christ. Thus it is appropriate that World Communion Sunday is also a time when we receive the annual Peace and Global witness Offering as a way of continuing the ancient Christian practice of sharing what we have with brothers and sisters in need.

Fall Means New Nursery Teams! We have a great staff of paid caregivers in our nursery, but we also rely on wonderful volunteers! Our Childcare Coordinator, Julie Hogan, is in the process of organizing nursery teams for the coming year. If you use the nursery, we ask you sign up to help (works out to once about every other month) and we also LOVE to have other adults who love children, but don’t have little ones at home now help also! Julie will be contacting families directly, but if you wish to sign up, please email her now: [email protected]. All nurse-ry workers must have a background check and attend child protec-tion training.

Volunteer Opportunities

Do you have plans Wednesday night? WE WANT YOU! Come join us and share your time by volunteering for Wednesday Night Live! Meet fellow members, join us for fellowship, devour Chef Betsy's di-vinely inspired delicious offerings, and share in Pastor Robert's inter-generational worship service where we will read scripture, raise our voices in song, and pray for our fellow parishioners. We can't do this without you, and your presence will enhance our special Wednesday night time together. Please join us! Let Rick Cardenas or Stephanie Rollans know to expect you!

Mooresville Soup Kitchen is excited to share with you their upcom-ing event scheduled for Saturday, October 10th from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Mooresville Soup Kitchen.

Mooresville Soup Kitchen is hosting a free "Community Block Par-ty"! There will be lots of fun and food for everyone. They will need your help to make this day of giving back to the community a suc-cess.

Use the link below to view the various volunteer opportunities and time slots: www.SignUpGenius.com/go/20F054FACA92CA2FF2-community

THE PEACE AND GLOBAL WITNESS offering will be received next Sunday. 25% will remain at DCPC (local) with the rest helping worldwide. Mark your check ‘peace offering’ or use the special envelopes in the pews. As part of this season of peace, Al Sudduth and Rebecca Clark will travel to Kenya on September 30 and Rosemary Klein and Robert Alexander will go to Nicaragua on October 3.

Parents, please encourage your students to stick with the youth program! If they feel uncomfortable at first, en-courage them to bring a friend. Remember, these young people are beginning an important part of their faith journeys. DCPC’s Youth Ministry will help support and nurture them over the next seven years, but it takes time and intentionality to develop a mature faith as well as solid friendships! Finally, parents please get involved, stay in touch, volunteer. All of us, who work with the youth, welcome your thoughts, input, and help.

In Christ’s service,

Sonia Lee, Educator for Youth [email protected]
