Let me begin by saying, “What a wonderful Growing Potatoes Luncheon we had on September 17, 2017 following the EPIC worship service.” Personally, I want to thank Geri Doll and the Youth for providing an outstanding Potato Bar with all the fixings. It is not too late to donate to the Youth Group to offset expenses occurred on this past summer’s mission trip to Idaho. Also, I want to thank the Promote the Growth Team (Gale Farmer, Joanna Ediger, Tom Church, Stephanie Bird Hutchison, David Miller, Mary Knecht, and Michelle Murray Cline) for all your work leading up to the meeting and leading the meeting around three important questions. These three questions were intended to spark our imagina-tions and creativity as we begin to live into the future God has prepared for us. For those who were not there, the three questions that we had amazing discussions at each table were:

1) What do you find to be the most joyful expression of your spiritual life?

2) What would it look like for FPC to be family focused?

3) What would a re-configured sanctuary look like to serve us well year-round?

Each group then reported their findings to the large group and to the Promote Growth Team to be tabulated and collated (at a later date) around common themes to your answers. Once this has happened the Promote Growth Team will report to Session and to the congrega-tion the next steps in addressing our adaptive challenge of growing the membership of First Presbyterian Church. In other words, becoming

the change we wish to see in our common life together. You are the stakeholders of First Pres-byterian Church with its rich history. But we cannot live in the past. We must learn from the past, live in the present, and look to the future. God is not finished with us yet… but it will mean venturing forth in faith to follow the path God has laid out before us.

It has been said that ships are safest in the harbor but that is not what ships are built for. Likewise, Christians are safe when huddled to-gether taking no risks in sharing the Good News. But this is not what Christians are called to do… we are called and commissioned by Je-sus Christ “… to go and make disciples of all tribes, of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to obey all that I commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, till the end of the age” (Matthew 28:19-20). Our challenge is to journey from the safe and com-fortable to venture forth with Jesus to share the Good News.

Speaking of future, I want to remind you that I will be going with Columbia Seminary to Germany to walk in the footsteps of Martin Lu-ther’s life. I leave September 26 and will return October 7. Please keep me in your prayers as I will you. I look forward to sharing with you all that I learned in a future Wednesday night class.

Grace and Peace, Pastor Brent

From the Parish Nurse

PSALM 23 Recently I had the opportunity to sit at the hospital bedside and read from the Book of Psalms to a serious-ly ill friend. There are very powerful messages and im-agery in the Psalms and I found myself editing some of the content because some of the visuals were just too much. I came upon Psalm 23 and immediately felt comfort, and I believe my friend did, too. Psalm 23 is

one of the most beloved passages in the bible and is often quoted at memorial services to remind of us that God is ever present and that He comforts us. I received an email years ago that was titled ‘Psalm 23 Explained Beautifully’ (source unknown) that I would like to share. When you need reas-surance of God’s presence, read this Psalm!

The Lord is my Shepherd That’s Relationship! I shall not want

That’s Supply! He maketh me to lie down in green pastures

That’s rest! He leadeth me beside still waters

That’s Refreshment! He restoreth my soul

That’s Healing! He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness

That’s Guidance! For his name sake

That’s Purpose! Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death

That’s Testing! I will fear no evil That’s Protection!

For thou art with me That’s Faithfulness!

Thy rod and Thy staff they comfort me That’s Discipline!

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies That’s Hope!

Thou annointest my head with oil That’s Consecration!

My cup runneth over That’s Abundance!

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life That’s Blessing!

And I will dwell in the house of the Lord That’s Security!

Forever That’s Eternity!

Heritage Sunday 2017

Mark your calendars now! You won’t want to miss this celebration of our Scottish and Protestant Heritage. This year we not only remember our Scottish roots, but also our Protestant roots, since this is the 500th Anniversary of Martin Luther’s nailing his 95 theses to the door of Wittenberg Scholsskirche (Castle Church). Our Heritage Sunday worship service draws its inspiration from the order of worship at St. Giles, Edinburgh, Scotland, and from the Rev. Dr. David Walker’s experience as an exchange pastor to Scotland. There will be special music from the choir, the organ, and the bagpipers. Remember there is only one service at 10:45 a.m. on Oct. 29. The Rev. Dr. Brent O. Johnston will be preaching. 50 Year or More members will be honored. Postcards may be picked up in the Office and mailed to friends inviting them to

attend this special service. Breakfast will be served from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. by the Youth. Special displays are on

view in the display cases of the East Dining Room and in The Gallery outside The Well. Also the Archives will be open from 9:00 – 10:15 a.m. Several special items will be on display.

The morning celebration will end on the front lawn with music by the Pipes and Drums.

Peace & Global Witness Offering Received October 1

What we’ve known as the Peacemaking Offering has been transformed into the Peace and Global Witness Offering. This offering, al-ways received and dedicated on the first Sunday in October, World Communion Sunday, will have a great global reach, a significant impact and bring peace to people through Christ. Jesus told us, “Blessed are the Peacemakers….”

65.3 million people worldwide are in need. Mostly women and children, these people have fled their homes to escape violence and persecution. Now at the highest levels ever rec-orded, the global refugee crisis represents one of the greatest humanitarian needs around the world.

Even as they work to resolve decades of conflict, Colombia still reported 6.9 million people without homes due to violence. In Syria in 2016, 13.5 million people required humani-tarian assistance, having fled their homes to es-cape the continued violence and civil war. In Africa amid decades of fighting, nearly 4.5 mil-lion people have sought refuge from violence and famine in the Congo, South Sudan, Ethiopia and Kenya.

“We Choose Welcome” is a campaign to live out the Biblical call to welcome the stranger. Peace & Global Witness recipient ministries, the Presbyterian Peacemaking Pro-gram and the Presbyterian Ministry at the Unit-ed Nations are among those collaborating to as-sist every level of the PC(USA) in this effort. Additional information can be found at presby-terianmission.org/we-choose-welcome.

Millions of people around the world seek peace. You can make a difference! Your gift to the Peace & Global Witness Offering can help to provide relief, shelter, and hope to fami-lies who’ve fled their homes in search of safety.

Community with the Living God” Presbyterian Women are studying the

book of Hebrews this year. The major theme is that the ever-present “great cloud of witnesses’ (Heb. 12:1) strengthens and encourages us as we “run with perseverance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus the pioneer and perfecter of our faith” (Heb. 12:1-2).

Cheryl Runyon will be the leader for lesson #2 “In Community with the Living God” that will be held Wednesday, October 11, 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. in the Parlor. Any woman in the church is welcome to attend this fellowship. If you would like a study guide ($10.00) before the meeting, contact [email protected] or call 942-8068.
