Perspectives: Generosity Begins in Westport
“Give what you have. To someone, it may better than you dare to think” Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
Americans are known to be a very generous people, responding to need not only in their own country, but also throughout the globe. That certainly has been proven true in recent times, when so many good causes find them-selves scrambling for donations to continue their missions and new worthy causes have emerged. With the cancella-tion of FOWL’s 2020 book sales, we are now dependent upon funds from our annual membership drive for 2021 to provide support to the Library for the purchase of materi-als and technology. Our basic membership remains at the same rate it has been for well over a decade, ten dollars, because it’s part of our mission that everyone has the op-portunity to be a member of FOWL and to be involved in supporting a vital part of our community, our public Li-brary. Your 2021 membership is more important than ev-er. Thank you for your support.

NEW Books For FALL 2020 Westport Library Book Club
Hello Book Club Members;
What Have You Been Reading?
I’m curious about everyone’s choice of books during these last few months. Is there one or even two books that you found outstanding and would like to recommend to all the other members? There is no better source of book recom-mendations but from Book Club members who read widely, voraciously and eclectically.
A few months ago I read Olive Kitteridge. I had heard of the book previously but didn’t find the description intriguing. On Denise Micale’s recommendation I not only read the book but the sequel Olive, Again. The book is a compilation of 13 stories all tied together by one irrepressible Crosby, Maine resident named Olive, a retired math teacher. Olive affects other people’s lives but finds that her view of herself is quite different than what others see.
One of our FOWL members, Maryteresa Hicks, sent me her favorite book choice during this long quarantine. She highly recommends Jodi Picoult’s The Storyteller , two paral-lel and powerful stories (one of a Nazi officer and one of a young Jewish girl) in the days of the Polish occupation by Nazi Germany. Maryteresa’s husband Dave recommends The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova, a historically accurate gothic horror tale .
Looks like my holds list on SAILS is getting longer. Send me an email. Let me know what you’ve been read-ing and what you would recommend to the group. Best wishes to all and stay safe,
Carol Vidal [email protected] or [email protected]

FOWL aids the mission
of the Westport Free Public Library.
All activities are run by volunteers—people who believe in a public
library. Funds raised through member dues and book sales go to the
Library to purchase books, CDs, DVDs, museum passes, and to fund
children’s and adult programs. FOWL is the largest funding source for
these purchases. In 2019, member dues and book sales contributed
over $25,000 to Library funding. If you’re not yet a member, fill in the
form to the right to join today.
