    Events for Horton Farmers Market October 29th, 2011 8:00 a.m. until 12:00pm

Meet me at the Market! The Horton Farmers' Market is a best-in-class market destination that promot

civic pride, shapes local culture and supports the regional economy by

providing access to high quality food producers, craftspeople and artisans.

The Horton Farmers' Market is located on Manitoba Street, 1/2 block North

from Talbot Street (at the Giant Tiger stop light) with plenty of free parking.

What an incredible season! It feels like the

chilly opening weekend in May was just a

few short weeks ago, hard to believe wev

gone through all 26 weeks of the 2011

season. Vendor sales were the highest in

history, and the crowds were in record

numbers. Our town should be proud of thi

amazing resource for local food. Our

    community should feel fantastic about

keeping our dollars local, supportingbusiness incubation, and creating jobs righ

here in St. Thomas. We should be boastfu

that so many residents are interested in

learning about local producers, where our

food comes from, how its made and what

    in it.

We cant think of a better way to close out

the season than to have an awesome

Author come out to showcase her locavore

book - The Ontario Table. See you Saturda

BERRYHILL FRUIT FARMThe Mutsu apple is a great all around apple for eat-ing, baking an storing for the winter. Try this recipefor baked apples. I bought apple baking dishes fromPinecroft that work nicely. (water is not necessarywhen using individual apple baking dishes)

Another really good storing apple is the Royal Gala.I've kept mine until March of the next year! Ofcourse, they were ready to be made into applehead dolls by then.

We will have potatoes by the bag and lots of pump-kins at the market too. See you there!Baked Apples 4 large good baking apples, such as Mutsu,Golden Delicious, or Jonagold 1/4 cup brown sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 teaspoon flour 1/4 cup chopped pecans 1/4 cup currants or chopped raisins 1 Tbsp butter 1/2 cup boiling waterMethod: 1 Preheat oven to 375F. Wash apples.Remove cores to 1/2 inch of the bottom of the ap-ples. It helps if you have an apple corer , but if not,you can use a paring knife to cut out first the stemarea, and then the core. Use a spoon to dig out theseeds. Make the holes about 3/4-inch to an inchwide.2 In a small bowl, combine the sugar, cinnamon, flour, currants/raisins, and pecans. Place apples in a8-inch-by-8-inch square baking pan. Stuff eachapple with this mixture. Top with a dot of butter(1/4 of the Tbps).3 Add boiling water to the baking pan. Bake 30-40minutes, until tender, but not mushy. Remove fromthe oven and baste the apples several times withthe pan juices.Serve warm with vanilla icecream on the side.Makes 4 servings.

During the 12 weeks wewere vendors at themarket, we hadoverwhelmingly positiveexperiences and we wishto thank our customers fortheir encouragement andsupport. Sharing what wegrow is more than a busi-ness, so you are not justgiving us money in ex-change for our produce.Thank you so much for the

memories that make uswant to do it all again in2012.The market may be ending, but the memories and ongoingrelationships continue to bring joy into our lives. Jane of WildfloweTea visited our home on Sunday with Meagen, Sandy and John andwe all enjoyed Kim's Green Leaf Gourmet pumpkin cheesecake.Tuesday Nicole of Spatopia came for a visit and brought a supply oher amazing lemongrass soap for us to give as gifts in the next couof weeks. R-Grow's wreaths grace our front door and livingroom wwhile the gourds from Berry Hill bring seasonal color to our foyer. Wgrow a lot of what we eat, but supplement our meals with mushroofrom Judy, produce from McSmiths, pork from the Harris trio andmany other vendors. It feels good to remember the people that cre

what we enjoy. Thanks to Shawn for her organizational skills, diplomacy and this wonderful newsletter.

For us, the market isn't just about the incredible selection of locallymade products and produce; it is also about the relationships betwus, the shoppers, and other vendors. We are looking forward to shping at the Christmas Market on November 19 and seeing many ofthese people that make the Horton Farmers' Market so successful.Hope you'll be there too.
