thanks to Harry Hayes from Athens GA for the photos

ENORMOUS THANKS to Corey Barksdale for all his hard work! Special thanks to Steve Boudreaux for the sound system. Thanks to Melanie Hammet for assisting on the set-up and Paula Larke who helped with the close-

down. Big thanks to the bands who agreed to play for free, and to the artists who displayed their wares with such good spirits.

And the FOOD! Yummy thanks to Liz from the Kingfisher and Carl from the German Bakery. Cheers for the Playground Committee who kept us all in delicious

sweets and hot coffee, and the Tree Board who diligently continues to raise money for trees in Pine Lake.

Big thanks to Matt Wells of Public Works who faithfully arrived at opportune times to deal with trash, etc., and to Chief Y'Huda and her staff who were on duty.

And of course, big thanks to Phil Howland for all he does to make good things happen in

our city.

We couldn’t have asked for better weather for this year’s festival. Clear skies and a cool breeze added to the enjoyment of the weekend as festival goers soaked in the sun, music and good food. Booths stretched along Lakeshore offering enticing wares.

8:00 p.m. nce upon a timence upon a timence upon a timence upon a time, the world was one family, and that family was Bizzoso. As time and evolution

progressed, the Bizzosos spread to all corners of the

earth, taking with them the kernel of creativity and

celebration that was their family heritage.

Members of the Bizzoso family will thrill, charm, and entertain you with extraordinary stories, dances, and

music, including tap dancing, ukuleles, juggling, and

family antics. The Pine Lake Clubhouse will be

transformed into a musical and visual treat, with

original paintings by Papa Bizzoso, aka

Atlantan/Argentine artist Normando Ismay.

The evening will be hosted by the Papa of the Bizzoso Family himself, who will regale us with

stories of the Bizzoso Family, and perhaps even help

you find your ties to the Family!

Performers are arriving from far flung locales including Toronto, Blacksburg, Morocco, and Pine

Lake. Already scheduled on the bill are the Ukulele Ladies, Junk DNA: The Cut Off Genes, the

Packable Child, the Kinney Family Band, Lilikoi & Moku, The Duchess of Cabbagetown, La

Banana, and members of the Deluxe Vaudeville Orchestra. Rumor has it that other performers

may include Elise Witt, Mick Kinney, Celeste Miller, Alexandra Miller MacColl, Ann Kilkelly,

Carol Burch Brown, Jennie McKnight, Joyce Brookshire, Chip Epsten, Toni Shifalo, and of

course the inimitable Papa Bizzoso.

Neighbors Caring and Sharing

It is time to collect non-perishables and money for our Thanksgiving and Christmas food baskets. These

baskets are delivered to our neighbors who are in need of help for the Holidays. Some find themselves out of work because of illness or some other reason. And some are on a fixed income and just can't stretch the small amount they receive to buy enough food to last until their next check, especially with the winter heating bills.

If you or someone you know is need of our help, Please contact me with the information and I will make contact to see what the need is, and how we can best help. The names of those who receive the food

baskets are kept in strict confidence. I will be the only one who will know who the recipients are.

The deadline for donations for Thanksgiving is November 19th. Please drop off your donations at my

home, or at the beach house, during the November pancake breakfast. You can contact me at: Faye Ridling, 635 Ivy Road, (404)294-6577

Dr. Marty Finkelstein was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis 33 years ago and was told nothing could be done other than medicine and surgery. His life changed when a friend referred him to a holistic chiropractor who explained how this illness not only could improve but also heal. Dr. Marty changed direction from going to medical school to going to chiropractic school. Within 12 months ulcerative colitis no longer existed. Because of that process of healing he has continued to help and serve others to greater wellness and healing.

Pine Lake Summer Theatre Camp !

Pine Lake’s Arts Department is planning a summer theatre camp at the Beach House this June! If you have a child or a young person who is interested in performing, making scenery, singing, dancing….anything theatrical…..then this is the place for them this summer.

We’re planning half-day sessions, 9 am – 2 pm, for two weeks (M-F), culminating in a performance for the whole family! Estimated cost for the Theatre Camp is $175 for one child, with discounts for multiple children in the same household. Some scholarships will be available. If there is sufficient need, we will offer extended hours (before and after the Camp), for working parents.

“Welcome to Pine Lake, you are going to love it here. Do you need any help with anything?”

And so begins many introductions to

Pine Lake by Faye Ridling; a

beloved neighbor whose spirit of

volunteerism and community involvement is widely known, cherished and greatly appreciated.

Faye is kind of heart with a generous spirit. Pine Lake residents who suffer through a bad time economically,

spiritually or with a health crisis attest to Faye’s generosity of spirit, time, and energy. She has been the person to get the Thanksgiving and

Christmas baskets together and delivered for so long that it’s hard to remember when she wasn’t the one in charge.

Faye helps in other ways as well. She volunteers at cookouts and parades and she can often be seen with her precious grandson, Tyler.

Get in a conversation with Faye and you are sure to learn something about Pine Lake you didn’t know before. Faye has

called Pine Lake home since 1979 and she is well-versed in the history of Pine Lake and most of the residents.

Faye works long hours for the DeKalb County School system but always makes time for conversation with her neighbors.

Both of her sons share her civic mindedness and are DeKalb County police officers. Faye’s daughter and

grandson live in Pine Lake.

Faye is one of those people who builds and

nourishes a sense of community, encouraging everyone to be more involved. She is truly welcoming to all and helps make Pine Lake the special place that we are proud to call home.

OCTOBER ARB CUTTING THE EDGE SPEAKER ON THE TAD

Last month Shannon Barrett, assistant city manager of Marietta, was a timely speaker for the

CTE series with the upcoming TAD (Tax Allocation District) vote on our Nov. ballot. Marietta has utilized numerous TADS to help redevelop parts of their city that needed extensive work. Rather than utilize citizen tax dollars to underwrite the effort,

the city administration chose to put a TAD up for vote -- asking residents for their approval to structure redevelopment. The results have been impressive: formerly under-developed and

blighted parts of their city have been transformed.

Ms. Barrett and Mayor Zarus took questions from attendees; both explained and emphasized that a “yes” vote for a TAD means approving the city administration to begin negotiating all aspects of

redevelopment and in no way creates a tax burden for residents or a liability for the city.

Ms. Barrett handed out information that was clear and easily understood. If you would like to receive a copy, please email [email protected].

Way Cool News--You're Invited! Your Architectural Review Board (ARB) has secured funding from Dekalb County (huge thanks, Chris Morris, Dekalb Community Development!) to hire a city planner, and we found an amazing one! Alycen Whiddon, RLA, AICP, is ready to help us create that 21st century, cutting-edge model city we envision, and she needs our help. We'll gather with Ms. Whiddon for half-day workshops (time to be announced) to hear your input about how you want your city (both residential and commercial) to look, act, and feel.

WATER RESTRICTIONS

Due to drought conditions across Georgia, the Director of the Environmental Protection Division (EPD) has issued a LEVEL FOUR drought declaration for the entire state. The declaration requires that Georgians immediately follow a more stringent outdoor water use schedule. No outdoor water use is allowed, other than (for residences) personal food gardens and newly-installed (30 days or less) landscaping. Some Pine Lake neighbors are violating these restrictions and may be reported: please comply!

LEAF REMOVAL!

Leaves must be bagged or in re-usable containers (trash cans, etc.) on the curb. When possible, Public Works will recycle leaf bags.

DO YOU LIVE ON LAUREL ROAD? DeKalb County will be re-paving the length of Laurel Road sometime in early November. The City will try to give residents a ‘heads-up’ with a door-to-door flyer, but the county is known to show up with little or no notice. Phil Howland, city administrator, says, “We’ll do our best to give you as much notice as we can.”

CALLING ALL MOVERS, SHAKERS, LEADERS AND FOLLOWERS

After much discussion, Council is asking all leaders of various city groups to attend a quarterly “Leadership Roundtable,” right before the Work Session (January 29, April, July and October 2008). We will have a Nov. 12 --- PLCA, PLAIN, ARB, DDA, PLEAS,(see glossary at calendar), Playground committee, Tree Board -- - all are asked to send one leader to the first Roundtable on November 12 at 6:30pm at the Clubhouse. These meetings will last ONE HOUR, and are an attempt to promote closer communication and planning within the city.

MORATORIUM! As the ARB and DDA begin to pick up speed on shaping our shared environment, Council voted to place a moratorium on subdividing and assembling all property within the city AND a moratorium on building permits within 300’ of Rockbridge Road. The moratoriums are in effect until the end of April, 2008.

MUNICIPAL CODE --- ON-LINE Need to know fence heights, noise ordinances, or details on deck/porch expansions? You can now search our code online, by key words – quick, easy and comprehensive. Just go to www.municode.com, choose “online library” and select Georgia on the map. If you prefer to review a hard copy, there are several at City Hall.

OTHER RECENT COUNCIL ACTION

• Council heard the first reading of an ordinance requiring “Visitability” in all new construction. “Visitability” means a home that can be visited (or lived in!) by a person using a wheelchair or other mobility limitations. Key features are at least one ground-level, no-step entrance (does not have to be the main entrance) and a toilet on that level. • Several citizens asked Council to pass a resolution endorsing a national Department of Peace, as Atlanta and at least 25 other cities have done. Council tabled the resolution until local, grassroots actions could be identified. For more information, please contact Elisabeth Shields ([email protected] or 4/296-9094). • Council heard the first reading of an ordinance to repeal any minimum house size. • Preliminary guidelines from the Architectural Review Board have been adopted as Ordinance. Originally accepted as a Resolution (with less legal weight), these guidelines now include oversight of commercial and business construction as well as residential. • Council is now amending the 2007 budget and preparing the 2008 budget. NOVEMBER TOWN HALL The final Town Hall for 2008 is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 15 at 7:30 in the Clubhouse. If you have suggestions for the agenda, please contact Elisabeth Shields ([email protected] or 4/296-9094). We will have an update from the Lake History research project, and discuss matters of concern to city residents.
