It has been great to see our greens full with bowlers again. Unfortunately the easing
of Covid restrictions hasn't been beneficial to the Club as the inside 4 square metre
rule has not been changed therefore our capacity limitations in the Club House
remain the same. We are still operating under our Covid Safe plan and would like to
thank everyone for adhering to these regulations and restrictions as part of the ’new
normal’.
The AGM was held on the 26th of September, I would like to welcome Garry
Denkel and Isobel McLaren who were successful in their nominations for positions
on the board. I would like to personally thank our out going board members Glenn
Mann and Barry Svenson for their many years of service for our great club and wish
them all the best for their second retirement.
We have had many in club competitions run since the last chronicle, congratulations
to all of the winners in these events.
We will be holding a fundraiser for ‘Light the Night’ on the 17th October from 3pm
on the greens. There will be a sausage sizzle, a raffle and some novelty bowls with
all proceeds going to Leukaemia Foundation. Please come down, dig deep and
support this great cause if you can.

Chairman

Wow, it’s hard to believe that it is October already. The Global Pandemic has
definitely impacted many clubs and we have seen a difference in our bottom
line. Despite these challenging times the Club is trading well and it has been
great to see so many familiar faces coming in to enjoy our Club’s wonderful
facilities once again.
The easing of restrictions from October 1st from 4 square metres to 2 square
metres unfortunately only applied to outdoor areas such as outdoor dining and
beer gardens which in turn meant that there was no easing of capacity
restrictions inside the club house. We are still operating under our Covid-Safe
plan, thank you everyone for your cooperation in following these procedures–
they are put in place to protect our patrons and staff.
The prestige Carnival is scheduled to be played at the end of November/ early
December pending Covid restrictions easing. A decision will be made about this
carnival going ahead will be made early November.
Congratulations to all of the bowlers who have participated and won in the in
Club competitions , District competitions and Pennants that have been played
since the club has reopened – Well done.
Glenn Mann and Barry Svenson did not elect to re run for their positions on the
Board at this years AGM, I would like to acknowledge their many years of hard
work and dedication to the Bribie Island Bowls Club while serving in their
respective positions. I congratulate everyone with their position moving forward
into 2021 and wish you all the best. Should you need to ask any questions or
need any assistance, my office door is always open and I am only too happy to
help.
On a final note please remember bowling memberships are due for renewal at
the end of this month and social memberships will be due at the end of
December this year. If you have not already renewed, please see our lovely staff
at reception who will be able to assist you in doing so.

Veterans’ Report
PLAY BY THE RULES
The veterans’ committee thanks all bowling mem-
bers who join in our monthly play days for the way
we have all accepted the new rules imposed by the
government authorities due to Covid-19 outbreak.
These changing rules are a little hard to keep up
with, however we are able to get out on the greens
and enjoy a social game of bowls. So lets keep up
the good work and “play by the rules”.
Of course we all look forward to the day when we
can resume some of the social activities we have in
the past enjoyed.
ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING
At the time of writing the date for the Vets’ AGM
had not been decided. All committee positions will
be declared vacant and nominations for each posi-
tion will be called for. Please do consider nominat-
ing as it is time we saw some new people with per-
haps some new ideas to have the Vets’ section
move forward into next year. We are obliged to
work in with the AGMs of other sections and the
board in setting the date. Please keep an eye on the
notice boards for the dates.
VETS’ CHRISTMAS PARTY
We are unable to make firm plans for our annual
Christmas Party at this time due to the ever chang-
ing Covid restrictions. It is however very likely
that some changes, even significant changes will
need to be made. Please keep an eye on the notice
boards, particularly the Veterans’ Notice Board for
information on this event.
Noela Gray, Veterans’ President
THANK YOU
Many thanks to all the Veterans members who continue to help in their own way to support the friendship which we
often take for granted, including the fun on the greens which keeps us all going.
WHO CAN JOIN THE BRIBIE VETS
Full members of the Bribie Island Bowls Club Inc who have
reached the age of 60 years may join the Veterans’ Section
for just $5 per annum. From late 2019, full bowling
members of any club affiliated with Bowls Queensland can
also join the Bribie Vets’ for just $5. Just complete an
application form, available at reception. If you would like to
experience our social activities before joining, we would be
happy for you to attend a play day as a guest. Two meetings
may thus be attended. Please contact the Vets’ President or
any of the Vets’ committee members for more details.
NOT YET SIXTY YEARS OF AGE
From time to time full members of the Bribie Island Bowls
Club, under the age of 60, are invited to attend a play day at
home or to join in a “Bus Trip” visit-out. Just a couple of
things to respect:-
The age and agility of our more senior bowlers
NO driving on the green
Always play in good friendly spirit.

Coaching PLAYING AS A TEAM – THE SECOND POSITION
The second’s position is very often underestimated in importance, frequently being regarded as a
scorer in the pencil sense rather than the bowling sense.
Nothing could be further from the truth, because the position should be regarded as the engine
room of the team and is very often critically pivotal to the team’s success or failure. A good player
in the second position must be versatile in a number of ways.
Firstly, as a back up lead, who may on occasions fail to get a bowl in the head. Secondly, in con-
solidation, when the lead is performing well, either by adding shots or placing bowls in strategic
positions at the skip’s directions. And thirdly, he may also be required to execute a firm shot or
drive dependant upon the position at the head.
Normally he will be playing a draw shot for around 75% of the time, so that the practice routines
should include a preponderance of draw shots with particular emphasis on obtaining the correct
weight with a large percentage of deliveries. A second who is persistently short will cause untold
headaches for both the third and the skip, particularly from the point of view of having no bowls in
the head or in strategic positions.
It must therefore, be remembered, that in this position, reaching the head is of paramount im-
portance. When asked to play a firm shot, the second will nearly always be required not to lose his
bowl, and this means that practice sessions should be with medium weight either one, two or three
metres through the head. Assistance with perfecting this type of shot can be found by using angles
of the green, or by visualisation of drawing to a specified point behind the jack and to one side.
How often do you hear a skip ask for a yard on shot, only too see the bowl whistle past him and
into the ditch? Wasted shots of this nature are a regular occurrence, and can and should, be avoid-
ed by regular practice of an appropriate nature.
Position bowls will also be called for, and it will be essential for the second to fully understand the
shot that has been requested. If in doubt you should always ask for clarification, and the skip can
and should help by clearly indicating the position in which the bowl is to finish. There is nothing
worse than playing a shot without fully understanding what is required, and in these circumstances
are greatly diminished.
Again, the practice routines of this position require that shots be played away from the head to im-
aginary positions on the rink, and because they are not played regularly, they can be difficult to
achieve with accuracy.
To sum up, a good second should be a jack of all trades, and should tailor the practice routines to
cover all eventualities which may arise from time to time. Finally, of course, he should carry an
appropriate writing implement, and remember that on completion of the end, there is nothing to
prevent him from kicking back bowls.
This article was taken from a Coaching column in the Bowls NSW magazine and written in 2006
by John Younghusband NSW State Coaching Committee.
Cheers… Mick

Bowls is a game of great antiquity.
We know from studies of ancient Egypt that a bowls-like game was played in the land of the
Pharaohs as far back as 7,200 BC.
This has been stated and verified by Egyptologists in their studies of ancient ‘Books of the
Dead’, of which volumes were buried with mummified bodies in their sarcophagus.
Naturally the game spread around the Mediterranean coast and a form of the game is still played
in Italy to this day, where it is known as ‘bocce’.
This is played with stone or metal balls that are thrown rather than bowled.
In France and Spain it is played with wooden or stone balls and is called ‘boule’ or ‘petanque’.
It was introduced to Great Britain with the Norman Conquest, where its name loosely translated
as ‘throwing the stone’. It was generally played on a flat, level piece of well grassed sward,
wherever it could be found either in the castle courtyard or by the village inn. The sport became
popular with all classes, but this popularity caused problems, with Edward III banning the sport
in 1361 because it was interfering with compulsory archery practice. In 1374 the Marquis of Winchester used a spherical wooden balustrade ornament in place of a
stone ball and so the wooden bowl was born.
In 1511, Henry VIII took a leaf from Edward’s laws and, for the same reason, interference with
archery training, banned ‘bowles and bowlynge’.
This was the first ever official record of this sport.
The gentry were exempt from the ban and all commoners could play bowls on the green of the
local gentry provided it was a holiday or a member of his family was present. Queen Ann
Boleyn and her daughter, Queen Elizabeth I, were both very keen bowlers. Anne, in particular,
often wagered huge sums on the result of one shot and was consequently short in her royal
purse when she settled her bets. A bet of $5,000 was commonplace.
William Shakespeare knew and understood thoroughly the game of bowls. In his plays we find
reference to ‘rubs’, ‘upcasts’, ‘kissing the white’, ‘onward ever onward thus a bowl should roll’
and so on. King James I laid down a green at Hampton Court Palace in 1605. It cost
£49.11s.7d…about $4911.70 and workers were paid 15c a day. In the reign of Queen Victoria,
all prohibitions on the sport were lifted and many greens were laid, both public (pay as you
play… similar to squash courts) and private or club. It became very popular with all classes in Victorian and Edwardian times and to be a bowler
was seen to be a person of upright moral standing in the community and a pillar of the
establishment. In the reign of King George VI a green was laid at both Buckingham Palace and
Windsor Castle and the Royal Household Bowling Club was formed.
Several members of the Royal family are keen and enthusiastic bowlers. Queen Elizabeth II in 1959 conferred the title ‘Royal’ upon the Queensland Bowling
Association, and so it became the RQBA. In 1924, as a result of international bickering between
the UK and Australia, the International Bowling Board was founded. It was very one-eyed at
first but now, with the presidency rotating in turn between members countries, it has settled
down and has finally become the world controlling body.
The Australian Bowls Council (now Bowls Australia) is a charter member of the IBB (now
called the World Bowling Board).

General Managers Report-Kevin Bertwistle
Bar-Quite a good month for the bar in July considering our
restrictions. We did record a profit, albeit much less than
we are used to. On the whole, this about my expectations
for the next months with uncertainty on numbers of
patrons allowed into the Club. Having said that, I believe
August should be a little better.
Gaming-July turnover was outstanding and a new record
for the Club.
Bottle Shop-Bottle shop sales grew on the previous year.
TAB-TAB commissions were dismal.
KENO-Keno trade continues to improve.
Marketing-Club marketing will get back to normal when
we know that we can allow more patrons into the Club. At
the moment, it is a juggling act to provide incentive for
patrons to come in, but not to disappoint others who can’t
get in due to restricted numbers
Treasurers Report-Kerry Muller
Great cash movement. Net figure is assisted by
Government rebate for Job Keeper, discounted payroll tax

General Managers Report
Bar-Combined bar revenue was pleasing enough
allowing for the restrictions in place. Expenses were
manageable and slightly less than the previous year.
Overall a pretty good month.
Gaming-Gaming turnover was better. Taxation was
high again based on our excellent net win for the
month.
Bottle shop-The bottle shop sales for the month fell
short of last year’s sales expectations.
TAB-Limited admission numbers have sent
commissions on a downward spiral.
KENO-Experienced an upswing in commissions for
August.
Treasurers Report-Kerry Muller
Figures reveal normal trade fluctuations but also
fantastic cash build up. Goes to show we were “shovel

Men’s Pennant: the Men’s team won two of their
games to finish on 4 points level with Kallangur on the

Pine Rivers. All social bowls events and club
competitions are progressing well with positive
feedback from members.
Building Maintenance-Garry Denkel
Numerous lights and lamps replaced.
Thermal imaging test done on the power distribution
boards throughout the Club. Environhealth has
completed an asbestos audit in the Club, all good.
Replaced 3 toilet seats with slow closure lids in the
ladies toilets. Backflow testing on fire hose reels and
cellar washout station completed.
Replaced wave stickers on coffee shop windows.
Greens and Grounds-Mick Cherry
The major renovation of the Bell green has commenced.
The ditch rubber and plinth has also been removed. Our
next step is fumigation of the soil profile to rid the green of
ground pearl.
Bowls Co-Ordinator-Mick Cherry
Things slowly getting back to normal with both the ladies
and men’s sections busy trying to complete their busy
competition schedules. The Open and mixed events will be
commencing this month and only the Mixed Fours will be
cancelled this year due to lack of time.
The Saturday random select fours competition was
completed on the 6th September and attracted 374 bowlers
over the 6 weeks with the majority indicating that they
would continue to support the format.
The special events committee will be meeting after all the
elections are completed to finalise arrangements for the
Prestige carnival. Obviously at this stage we cannot be
certain that the event will go ahead because of restrictions
within the club. We must be able to accommodate 150
players plus spectators each day inside the club on top of our
regular patron numbers. A final decision will be made 1
month prior to competition date subject to government
directions.
The annual presentation is another event which is scheduled
in December, but before we can go ahead, we need to see
restrictions eased to allow 100 people in the Bistro.
My last report as Bowls Co-Ordinator, but I will be on hand
to assist my replacement for at least the next 3 months.
Looking forward to my new role as Greens Director.
