MEANWHILE ACTIVITIESMid 2017 to Early 2018
These will give you access to the site and show you ways it might be used in the
future. They will provide opportunities for creative public engagement and introduce
the site as a destination in its own right.
The scheme is part of a borough-wide programme, set out on Board 3. Harrow Council want to stimulate regeneration - support the local economy, generate jobs, build homes, encourage community activity, and provide streets and spaces that feel safe and pleasant to be in - in key sites across the borough. At a time of massively reduced central government funding, they also want to improve efficiency, provide better access, and increase opportunities to generate income, so that they can continue to deliver much-needed and, where possible, improved services.
WHY IS THIS PROJECT HAPPENING?
This is set out in detail on Board 5. In summary, we need to design a bold building or buildings, and associated outside space, on Wealdstone High Street, that contains new, more efficient council offices, useful community and retail spaces, and much-needed new homes.
The idea is that these buildings will become a public living room for Wealdstonea shared amenity for Harrow residents and council workers.
WHAT IS THE PROJECT BRIEF?
Over the coming months we will hold a series of events and activities. Most will be open to all. Some will target particular groups, such as local young people, or those with specific access needs. If you would like to be added to our e-mail list to receive invitations to these do leave your details on todays feedback form.
All project info, including displays and reports from events will be shared on the project blog:

HOW DO WE WANT TO INVOLVE YOU?
As part of their work to build a better Harrow, Harrow Council are planning a new civic building on Wealdstone High Street. Theyve asked architects Gort Scott and Allies and Morrison to design this building, but we cant do it without your input.
Todays event is the first in a series. Having won a competition last year, were now at the start of the real design process.
Your feedback will help shape our design brief - the recipe for the new building - and our initial design proposals. Were particularly interested in learning more about how the new building could work well for people in Harrow as a whole, and how it could make a positive contribution to Wealdstone town centre.
Please DO complete a feedback form. This will help ensure that we can really take your views into proper consideration as we develop designs.

HOW DOES THE WEALDSTONE PROJECT SIT WITHIN THIS?
Harrow Council are building a new civic centre because they believe it will help catalyse regeneration in Wealdstone and the wider Harrow area, encouraging growth in the local economy. They also want to make the council more cost and space efficient. Through this, the project will help offset some of the worst effects of recent economic conditions.
WHY DOES THE COUNCIL NEED TO BE MORE EFFICIENT?
The council are facing the biggest financial squeeze ever suffered by local government. All of their services are under threat. Just like councils all over London and the UK many of their services are being cut back to the minimum level allowed by law, because that is all that they can afford. To continue to offer any services at all they must make the best possible financial use of all their assets. This includes looking at all land that they own, and thinking about how to make better use of it.
