New Bellingham Art
These are pictures of a series of new artforms that are popping up around the city center
of Bellingham, Washington. When I saw the first one, I didnt think too much of it. Then I
saw another one. Then another one. And another, and many more. There are more, butthese are the ones I could get pictures of without too much effort.
Each one is not much more than simple geometric shapes. They are all mostly in primary
colors or secondary colors, with no fancy hues. They are meaningless, amorphous, shapes
that dont really depict anything at all.
After realizing there were more than just a few, almost one on every corner in some
areas, it reminded me of something Id read from the 1963 list of 45 Communist Goals.
22. Continue discrediting American culture by degrading all forms of artistic
expression. An American Communist cell was told to "eliminate all good
sculpture from parks and buildings, substitute shapeless, awkward and
meaningless forms."
And
23. Control art critics and directors of art museums. "Our plan is to promote
ugliness, repulsive, meaningless art."
These certainly seem to fit that bill, but Im really not sure what to make of these new artforms. Its obviously coordinated around the city. They appear to all come from the same
source. Political ideology aside, I wonder what this project is costing and who is paying forit?
What do you think? Do you know anything about them?
