2.0 MONITORING DESCRIPTION

In order to assess the pollution level in and around the mining lease, different environmental attributessuch as meteorology, air quality, water quality, soil quality and noise level are being monitored. Themonitoring is carried out as per the CPCB guideline and every care has been taken for preservation andtransportation of samples to the respective laboratory. M/s EDCPL has set up a site laboratory equippedwith adequate instruments and equipments to monitor and analyze all the parameters of Air Quality i.e.PM2.5, PM10, SO2, NOX&CO and few physic-chemical parameters ( 10 parameters) of water samples. For other parameters of water& Soil, the samples are sent to EDCPL’s Main Laboratory atBhubaneswar. The locations of monitoring stations are shown in Plate I & II.

2.1 Meteorology

An Automatic Weather Monitoring Station is installed at the rooftop of OMC office (21002’1.09” N;85048’8.46”E) to collect the meteorological data on hourly basis continuously.

The parameters monitored at the meteorological station were Temperature, Relative Humidity, WindSpeed, Wind Direction and Rainfall. These parameters were recorded at weather monitoring stationusing the respective sensors.

2.2 Ambient Air Quality

The prime objective of the ambient air quality study is to establish the existing ambient air quality inand around the mining lease area. The existing ambient air quality was monitored at six (6) locations. The locations were identified after due consultation of the OMCL officials. Monitoring was carried out forParticulate Matter (PM10), Particulate Matter (PM2.5), Sulphur Dioxide (SO2), Oxides of Nitrogen (NOX)and Carbon Monoxide (CO). The PM10 &PM2.5 was monitored for 24 hourly, while SO2 and NOxweremonitored on 4 hourly basis for 24 hours at each sampling location and CO was monitored using the COMonitor for 1 hr in a day in each monitoring station twice in a week, for a month. Details about Air QualityMonitoring locations are given in Table No. 2.1.

3.0 METHODOLGY

3.1 Meteorology

The meteorological parameters were monitored on hourly basis continuously by installing a weathermonitoring system at the rooftop of OMC office of M/s OMCL.

3.2 Air Monitoring

Monitoring was carried out for Particulate Matter (PM2.5), Particulate Matter (PM10), Sulphur Dioxide(SO2), Oxides of Nitrogen (NOX) and Carbon Monoxide (CO). The PM10 &PM2.5 was monitored for 24 hourly, while SO2 and NOX were monitored on 4 hourly basis for 24 hours at each sampling location and CO wasmonitored using the CO Monitor for 1 hr in a day in each monitoring station twice in a week, for a month. Thesampling and analysis of ambient air quality was carried out as per the approved procedures by CPCB.

3.3 Noise MonitoringThe monitoring of noise level was carried out at specified locations. Ambient Noise levels were recorded athourly intervals for 24 hours. And in case of Work zone, noise monitoring was carried out at hourly intervalsfor 11 hours.

3.4 Surface Water MonitoringFor assessing the water quality, surface water samples were collected. Eight (8) water samples from fourlocations (04) were taken in sterilized plastic cans twice a month. The samples were analyzed for essentialphysical, chemical and bacteriological parameters as per the list enclosed in the work order. The sampleswere analyzed as per standard procedure / method mentioned by CPCB/APHA.

3.5 Ground Water MonitoringFor assessing the Ground Water Quality, Ground Water Samples were collected. Five(5) Ground watersamples from five locations (05) were taken in sterilized plastic canes. The samples were analyzed foressential physical, chemical and bacteriologic ally parameters as per list enclosed in the work order. Thesamples were analyzed as per standard procedure/ method mentioned by CPCB/APHA.

3.6 Ground Water Level MonitoringFor assessing the Ground Water level, four(4) ground water level monitoring locations were selected withinthe study area.

3.7 Flow of Water MeasurementThe monitoring of flow of water was carried out monthly once of the springs and perennial analyses presentwithin and adjoining the mining lease area. The flow of water measurement was carried out at 4 specificlocations (04) and is expressed in m3/min.

3.8 ETP Water AnalysisThe Effluent treatment Plant Water Analysis Was Carried out at Southkaliapani and Water Samples werecollected from the D-Quarry and F-quarry and the samples were analyzed for Hexavalent Chromium(Cr+6),TSS, pH as per the guideline mentioned by CPCB.
