WELCOME TO TRAM SUNDAY Fleetwood Festival of Transport – Tram Sunday
returns in 2019 with its packed programme of
free entertainment, activities and fun, catering
for all age groups. It’s much more than a
transport festival and classic vehicle show, with
stalls and rides, arts activities and outstanding
performances.
Attracting staggering numbers to the town every
year the Festival is a Fleetwood tradition and
welcomes visitors from far and wide.
Tram Sunday has not one but two parades –
the first Civic Parade at 11.00am sets off from
Fisherman’s Walk/Ash St and includes vehicles of
many types, the parade proceeds down Lord St.
towards North Albert St. and on towards the North
Euston Hotel.
The SpareParts Arts Parade starts at 3pm (see
pages 18-19 for route) and will be packed with
crazy contraptions and flying machines created
by local community groups and schoolchildren
performing with House of Wingz alongside
international artists. It’s not too late to get involved
– join in with our workshops (page 13) and make
something for the parade.
You can’t help but be impressed by the lovingly
cared for classic motors – and of course our
beloved heritage trams. See pages 8-10 for more
information on just a small selection of vehicles you
can expect to see. Look out for the special Hillman
Imp Panda Police Car!
Thanks once again go to our main sponsor
Chris Allen Garages (Ford and Mazda), to all
the businesses in the programme and to all the
volunteers who help throughout the year.

VISITING TRAMCARS
In the 1930s a new manager took over at Blackpool Corporation
Transport, Walter Luff, and he decided that the fleet of trams that he
had inherited was too varied, old and outdated for such a vibrant,
popular seaside town. So in 1933 he began a full fleet renewal that
would, over the next five years, give Blackpool 116 of the most modern,
streamlined and efficient tramcars in the world and a fleet that would
form the backbone of the system for nearly 80 years!
‘BALLOON’ TRAMCAR No. 700: Purple and White “Flexity” liveried Double DeckerThe 26 new double deckers had two variations, open toppers and
enclosed. Nicknamed by the staff, due to their somewhat bloated
appearance, they are still known as ‘balloons’ to this day. 700 was the
prototype and built as an open topper for the summer seasons, but
during the Second World War she was rebuilt to match the other cars
that had been delivered as fully enclosed trams.
TRAMCAR NO. 621: Single Decker Green & Cream LiveriedNo. 621 was the first of its class, built in 1937 supplied by the Brush
Electrical Engineering Company of Loughborough as one of 20 single
deck streamlined rail coaches that formed part of Luff’s modernisation
plan and followed on from 45 similar trams built by English Electric.
This class of 20 quickly became commonly known as the ‘Brush cars’,
to differentiate them from the English Electric fleet. Following essential
conservation work, 621 was returned to an approximation of its original
livery for its 80th birthday in 2017 and operated for the first time that
year on the upgraded tramway.
TRAMCAR NO. 680: Single Decker Green & Cream Liveried Car 680 started life as a Brush Railcoach, similar to car 621. In the late
1950’s, when Blackpool’s tramway looked like it might close, ideas were
sought to allow Car 680 and other trams to survive. One plan was to
hitch trams together with one tram pulling another so only one driver
was required. 680 last ran as a “Twin Car” in 1972 when her trailer
became a staff room but then was scrapped in the 1980’s.

CAR CLUBS CAR CLUBS
BLACKPOOL & FYLDE LAND ROVER CLUB
Formed in March 2017 by a group of local Land Rover enthusiasts, the
club’s aim is to bring local enthusiasts and their families together to share
knowledge and the love of their motors.
The club attracts many local enthusiasts who own various Land Rovers
ranging from Series Land Rovers through to current models.
This year’s line up from the Club features a Series 1 manufactured in
1956 owned by a local Fleetwood resident. Also on the stand are several
Land Rover Defenders and a Freelander 1, the smallest of the Land Rover
range, and both no longer produced. The ever popular Discovery and
Range Rover can also be seen.
FOCUS NORTHWEST OWNERS CLUB
The Northwest’s leading Ford Focus car club welcomes everyone,
whether it be a mk1 focus or a brand new mk4 focus, highly modified or a
completely standard family car, everyone is welcome.
The club has been running for around four years and members attend
a wide variety of events and shows across the Northwest as well as
attending and organising charity events with their stunning cars for
everyone to have a look around.
They love working alongside local Northwest companies and have a wide
variety of club sponsors, all of which offer members discounts when
purchasing a service or products from them.
TAMESIDE CAR COLLECTORS
Tameside Car Collectors started out as a group of friends with an equal
interest in the preservation of classic and vintage cars.
The club was formed when the ‘Museum of Museums’ was opened in
Manchester, at the Trafford Centre and the group had the great honour of
displaying some of their cars within the Museum for the general public to
view and enjoy.
The club hosts and attends events and shows throughout the year and
can be found at all of the major shows throughout the Northwest.
Their members’ cars range from the 1920’s up to 1990’s, so owning a
classic isn’t a prerequisite of becoming a member.

LOOK OUT FOR:
1964 HILLMAN IMP DELUXE
Over 300 Hillman Imps were supplied to police forces throughout the
country in an attempt to improve the use of manpower and to improve
police mobility. In March 1967 the first six standard Imps in Capri Blue
were prepared and painted to the ‘Panda’ paint scheme and the cars
were run-in and delivered to the Newton Abbot Division of the
Devon and Cornwall Constabulary - the area specially selected for
the Imps to patrol.
On patrol, the cars carried equipment in the form of shovels, police signs,
and fire extinguishers. This test improved mobility which helped crime
detection. During the test, the Imps proved to be reliable and economical.
