1 Benefits of FastingThe Sheikh ‘Abdul-‘Azeez bin ‘Abdillah bin Baaz, may Allah have mercy on him, said
“And in the fasting, there are many benefits and great wisdoms. From them, are:
The cleansing of the soul and its rectification and purification from evil mannerisms and blameworthy characteristics, such as arrogance, pride and stinginess, and accustoming it to the noble mannerisms such as patience, forbearance, generousity, kindness and striving against the soul in that which pleases Allah and brings (a person) closer to Him.
And from the benefits of the fast is that it makes the slave know himself, his requirement, his weakness and his need for his Lord, and it reminds him of the great blessing of Allah upon him. And it also reminds him of the need of his brothers, the poor people, and that (then) necessitates him thanking Allah, free is He from all imperfection, and seeking aid through His blessings to obey Him and being charitable to his brothers the poor people and doing good towards them. And Allah, free is He from all imperfection, The Most High, has pointed out these benefits in His Saying, The Mighty and The Majestic:
“O’ you who believe, fasting has been prescribed upon you just as it was
prescribed upon those before you so that perhaps you make be of those who 2 .”have taqwa (piety/fear)

So, He, free is He from all imperfection clarified that He prescribed upon us the
fasting so that we can have taqwa of him, free is He from all imperfection, and this
shows that the fasting is a means towards (attaining this) taqwa. And taqwa is:
Obedience to Allah and His Messenger by doing that which was ordered and
abandoning that which was prohibited out of sincerity for Allah, The Mighty and
The Majestic, and (out of) love, hope and fear (of Him). And with this does the slave
protect himself from the Punishment of Allah and His Anger. So, fasting is a great
branch from the branches of taqwa and a way of getting closer to The Protector, The
Mighty and The Majestic, and a strong means towards (attaining) taqwa in the rest
of the affairs of the world and the religion.
) pointed out one of the benefits hi wa sallamiallallahu ‘alasAnd indeed, the Prophet (
:)hi wa sallamiallallahu ‘alasin his saying (of the fast
“O’ assembly of youth, whomsoever from amongst you is able to get married, then
let him get married, for indeed it helps to lower the gaze more and is more
protective of the private part. And whomsoever is not able to (get married), then 3 ”let him fast, for indeed it is a protection for him.
) explained that the fast is a protection for hi wa sallamiallallahu ‘alasSo, the Prophet (
the fasting person and a means for his purification and chastity. And that is not
except by the fact that the shaytaan runs through the blood veins of the son of Adam
and the fast (then) constricts those veins and reminds (him) of Allah and His
greatness. So, the authority of the shaytaan is then weakened and the authority of
eemaan is strengthened and because of it (the fast), the acts of obedience increase
from the believers and the acts of disobedience decrease.
And also from the benefits of the fast is that it cleanses the body of bad components
(substances) and secures for it (good) health and strength. Many of the doctors have
acknowledged this and have treated many diseases with it (fasting).”
3. Narrated by al-Bukhaaree in (the book of) Marriage, Chapter: Whomsoever cannot get married,
then let him fast, No.5066 and Muslim in (the book of) Marriage, Chapter: The desirability of getting
married for the one who desires it, No.1400.
