Two Products OfferDesign FlexibilityAs a manufacturer of two lines ofloadcenters, we are in a uniqueposition to offer the broadest rangeof interiors in the market. Each linehas its own unique characteristicsthat appeal to various segments ofthe market. OEM interiors are ULrecognized components and are listedin either of the following UL files:E8741 or E52977.

The interiors are designed for eitherhorizontal (single-row breakermounting), or vertical (double-rowbreaker mounting). To comply withNational Electrical Code® (NEC)requirements if mounted horizontally,when the breaker is ON, the handleshould be in the UP position. Whenmounted vertically, the handle togglesfrom left to right, so this is not a concern.

Type CHThe CH interiors feature 100% copperbus and use the CH 3/4-inch wide(19.1 mm) circuit breaker, whichminimizes panel space. Recognizedby contractors for its sturdy design,the CH interior will appeal to thosecustomers seeking an industrialquality bolted bus bar and the spacesaving of 1/4-inch (6.4 mm) per busstab. With a typical 12 circuit CHinterior, this space savings amountsto an 1-1/2 inch (38.1 mm) savingsover its 1-inch (25.4 mm) counterparts.The stab rating of the CH interiors is140 amperes maximum, meaning thatthe handle rating of breakers mountedacross from one another may notexceed 140 amperes.

Type BRThe BR interiors are manufactured offormed, plated aluminum or copper,and use the Cutler-Hammer Type BR1-inch wide (25.4 mm) circuit breaker.This design affords customers themost circuit flexibility as many ofthese interiors allow the installationof standard 1- and 2-pole breakersas well as duplex (2 poles in a 1-inchspace, 25.4 mm), or quadplex (4 polesin a 2-inch space, 50.8 mm) breakers.The stab rating of the BR interiors is200 amperes maximum, meaning thatthe handle rating of the breakers thatare mounted across from one anothermay not exceed 200 amperes.

Specifications, ListingsClass CTLNEC Paragraph 384-15 requires branchcircuit panelboards to be providedwith physical means to prevent theinstallation of more overcurrentdevices than the number of which theenclosure was designed, rated andapproved. Class CTL duplex, quadplexand twin breakers (identified by acatalog number prefix BD, BQ, BQCand CHT) are equipped with a ULlisted rejection tab over the lineterminal. All OEM interiors haveappropriately notched stabs to acceptthese rejection tab Class CTL breakers.

Duplex, quadplex and twin breakersmanufactured without the rejectiontab (identified by a catalog numberprefix BR, BRD and CHNT) areavailable for replacement purposesin older interiors.

CIRCUITBREAKERS

CH Circuit BreakersCutler-Hammer Type CH plug-onbreakers are a 3/4-inch (19.1 mm)design with a UL listed 10 kA interrupt-ing rating. CH breakers can be used asmain or branch disconnect devices.Several ratings are SWD and HACRapproved. Typical ampacity range forCH breakers is 15 to 150 amperes.

CH-GF People Protection BreakersCutler-Hammer Type CH-GF (groundfault circuit breakers) combine state-of-the-art electronic technology witha circuit breaker mechanism in acompact 3/4-inch (19.1 mm) package.The CH-GF automatically senses hotwire-to-ground faults in a 4 to 6 mArange and disconnects the power, thusproviding an extra margin of safetybeyond that of conventional circuitbreakers. CH-GF applications includebathrooms, cellar outlets, swimmingpools, outdoor branch circuits andkitchen branch circuits. Available in ULlisted 120 and 120/240V ratings. Cutler-Hammer also offers non-UL listedground fault breakers for internationalapplications as well as ground faultdevices for equipment protection.

CH-EPD Equipment ProtectionBreakersThe Cutler-Hammer Type CH-EPDdevice is similar to the CH-GP exceptthat it is designed to protect equip-ment (not people) against damagefrom arcing ground faults. It isavailable with a 30 mA trip level.Applications include infrared heatingequipment, process control equip-ment, etc.

Special Application BreakersAs the name implies, these devices aredesigned for special applications as re-quired by the National Electrical Code.

Neutral Switching BreakerPrimary application for the Cutler-Hammer switching neutral breaker isfor protection of process equipmentsuch as gas pumps that utilizeflammable liquids. Non-automaticpole breaks the neutral power leg,minimizing the danger of arc conditions.

2-Pole Breakers 120V or More to GroundUsed on Delta distribution systems,these Type CH breakers are applied onphase legs where voltage-to-ground isabove 120V.

Arc Fault Circuit Interrupters (AFCIs)Reduce the risk of fire by detectingand interrupting electrical arcing faultswhich standard thermal magneticbreakers cannot. For more informa-tion, see page 9.

CH-HM BreakersCH-HM breakers are designed withhigh magnetic trip settings. Single-and 2-pole CH-HM breakers (“HM”suffix) rated 15 and 20 amperes arerecommended for circuits withinherently high inrush currents.

CH-M50 BreakersCH-M50 breakers are designed tooperate at a maximum temperatureof 50°C. Single- and 2-pole CH-M50breakers (“M50” suffix) rated 15 to50 amperes are recommended forapplications where the ambienttemperatures are above 40°C.

CHP BreakersCHP breakers are designed with athree-position commercial trip (on-tripped-off). Single-, 2- and 3-poleCHP breakers rated 10 to 70 amperesare recommended for applicationsrequiring a breaker center trip position.

Unique two-position trip. Helps to eliminate nuisance callbacks, breaker trips to “OFF,” homeowner simply turns to “ON,” no reset required.

Plated steel latch lever provides load force for quick and reliable tripping during a thermal or magnetic trip condition.

Latch spring provides consistent relatching operation of the breaker trip mechanism.

Heavy-duty over-center toggle spring to ensure a quick and reliable “make-break” action.

Tin-plated copper contact stabs for good conductivity and quick installations.

Contact clip springfor solid bus stab connection. Eliminates expansion during envi-ronmental changes.

Large silver tungsten contacts for good contact wear and conductivity.

Magnetic armature place-ment spring ensures con-sistent low instantaneous trip on 15 and 30 ampere breakers.

Calibrated one-piece bimetal for reliable thermal protection.

Magnetic armature – assists in the instanta-neous tripping for short circuit protection.

Glass polyester base and cover for superior con-struction and durability. One-piece molded base allows for repeatable quality every time.

Heavy duty tin-plated copper box lugs for load termination. Rated for two 60/75 °C wire conductors.

Calibration screw (under UL label) provides for accurate and predictable protection every time. Factory calibrated.

Zinc-plated magnetic pole piece – works with magnetic armature to provide instantaneous tripping for short circuit protection.

Large gas port allowing short circuit gases to safely exit the circuit breaker.

All internal metal components are plated to provide a 100% non-corrosive circuit breaker.

Ground Fault Application NotesSingle-pole Type CHGFIs are designed for use in 2-wire, 120V AC circuits. Figure 4 shows a typical wiring configuration.

Two-pole Type CHGFIs are designed for use in 3-wire, 120/240V AC circuits, 120V AC multiwire circuits employing common, neutral and 2-wire, 240V AC circuits obtained from a 120/240V AC source.

Figure 5 and Figure 6 illustrate typical wiring configurations for 120/240V AC multiwire circuits.

Figure 7 depicts a 240V AC, 2-wire circuit. Note the “panel neutral” conductor connects to the neutral bar, even though the neutral is not included in the load circuit. This connection is necessary to supply a 120V AC power source to the ground fault sensing circuit.

The figures are shown with a 120/240V AC, single-phase, 3-wire power source, but are also applicable to a 120/208V AC, 3-phase, 4-wire power supply. For all figures the electrical operation of the Type CHGFI is not affected by the equipment ground.

GFCB® People Protection BreakersCutler-Hammer Type GFCBs (groundfault circuit breakers) combine state-of-the-art electronic technology with acircuit breaker mechanism in acompact 1-inch (25.4 mm) per polepackage. The GFCB automaticallysenses hot wire-to-ground faults in a4 to 6 mA range and disconnects thepower, thus providing an extra marginof safety beyond that of conventionalcircuit breakers. GFCB applicationsinclude bathrooms, cellar outlets,swimming pools, outdoor branchcircuits and kitchen branch circuits.Available in UL listed 120 and 120/240Vratings. Cutler-Hammer also offersnon-UL listed GFCBs for internationalapplications as well as ground faultdevices for equipment protection.

GFEP Equipment ProtectionBreakersThe Cutler-Hammer Type GFEP device issimilar to the GFCB, except that it isdesigned to protect equipment (notpeople) against damage from arcingground faults. It is available with a 30 mAtrip level. Applications include infraredheating equipment, computer equip-ment, process control equipment, etc.

BJ Circuit BreakersAvailable in 125 through 200 ampereframes, Cutler-Hammer Type BJ plug-on breakers have 10 kA and 22 kAinterrupting ratings that can be usedas main or branch disconnect devices.Large extruded aluminum box lugs,complies with UL486B, provide cooloperation. Tripping mechanism hasthermal and magnetic protection forlong-life performance. Rupture gas issafely vented into box gutter.

BD Circuit BreakersBD plug-on breakers have the sameconstruction as Cutler-Hammer Type BR1-inch (25.4 mm) per pole devicesexcept that two poles are in a space-saving 1-inch (25.4 mm) package.

UL listed interrupting rating is 10 kA.Some ratings are SWD and HACRapproved. Exclusive CTL rejectionfeature allows only 42 circuits in thepanel in compliance with NEC Article384-15.

BQ Circuit BreakersQuadplex® construction of Cutler-Hammer Type BQ plug-on breakersincorporates two duplex breakersassembled together to provide variouscombinations of 2-pole and single-poledevices in a 2-inch (50.8 mm) package,and allows compliance with NEC Article240-20(b). The 2-pole combinations ofCutler-Hammer Type BQ breakers aremarked “independent trip” meaningthat each pole of a 2-pole device tripsindependently of the other, but may beactuated jointly by means of the handletie. Independent trip devices may onlybe used on 3-wire Edison circuits wherethe neutral is present.

BQC Circuit BreakersQuadplex construction of Cutler-Hammer Type BQC plug-on breakersincorporates a special internalcommon trip cam. BQC breakers areavailable in several combinations of2-pole and single-pole deviceswherein the 2-pole circuits have aninternal common trip mechanism.These breakers are labeled “commontrip” and meet all the requirements ofUL489 paragraph 9.1 requiringmultipole breakers to have commontrip. Common trip breakers arerequired on all 240V circuits wherethere is no neutral present such aswater heaters, baseboard heat, airconditioners and other motorloads.

Special Application BreakersAs the name implies, these devices aredesigned for special applications asrequired by the National Electrical Code®.

Water Heater BreakerSome watthour meters incorporaterate register switches used in conjunc-tion with off-peak rates. Water heaterbreakers do not derive their circuitfrom the loadcenter stab. The line andload side of the breaker are fed toterminals on the breaker. Except forthese terminations, the device offersnormal circuit breaker protection.

Switching Neutral BreakerPrimary application for the Cutler-Hammer switching neutral breaker isfor protection of process equipmentsuch as gas pumps that utilize flam-mable liquids. Non-automatic polebreaks the neutral power leg, minimiz-ing the danger of arc conditions.

2-Pole Breakers 120V or More-to-GroundUsed on Delta distribution systems,these Type BR breakers are applied onphase legs where voltage-to-ground isabove 120V.

Non-Automatic Molded Case SwitchIdentical to comparable circuit breakerframes with this exception: non-automatic molded case switches do nothave thermal or magnetic elements.

Ground Fault Application NotesSingle-pole GFCBs are designed for use in 2-wire, 120V AC circuits. Figure 16 shows a typical wiring configuration.

Two-pole GFCBs are designed for use in 3-wire, 120/240V AC circuits, 120V AC multiwire circuits employing common, neutral and 2-wire, 240V AC circuits obtained from a 120/240V AC source.

Figures 17 and 18 illustrate typical wir-ing configurations for 120/240V AC multiwire circuits.

Figure 19 depicts a 240V AC, 2-wire circuit. Note the “panel neutral” conductor connects to the neutral bar, even though the neutral is not included in the load circuit. This connection is necessary to supply a 120V AC power source to the ground fault sensing circuit.

The figures are shown with a 120/240V AC, single-phase, 3-wire power source, but are also applicable to a 120/208V AC, 3-phase, 4-wire power supply. For all figures, the electrical operation of the GFCB is not affected by the equipment ground.
