“NuncestHora”whichmanyofyouknowtranslatesas“NowIstheHour”wasoneofthefavoriteexpressionsofmyverydearhighschoolLatinteacher.SheinsistedthatweuseourmeagerknowledgeofLatinateveryopportunity.IsurprisemyselfwhenIrealizehowmuchofwhatshetaughtusactuallystuckinmymind.Iencourageeachofyoutorememberwhateverforeignlanguageyouweretaught.Ifyouwilldothatyoumayaccomplish two things:first youmaywellbe surprisedhowmuchyourememberandsecondyouwillprovetoyourchildrenandgrandchildrenthattheywerecorrectwhentheythoughtthattheireldersareweird.

Nowback to thesubjectathand. It isnowthehour tomakeanyneededchangesinallofthenon-profitorganizationsweareinvolvedin.Wehavealotofnewcommitteechairs,officersandothersthatwewillberelyingon.Ithinkwehavemostofourpositionsfilled,butnowwemustlearnhowtoworktogether.ManyifnotmostofourAmericanFederationmembersareexperiencedpeopleandthatshouldmakethingsgosmoothlyin2013.IreceivedafewinquiriesinthepastmonthandIthinkthatmostquestionshavebeenresolved.

ToconcludeourLatinreviewIwouldliketosaytoallofyou“amote”.FurtherIwishtosaytoallofthoseelectedofficialsparticularlythoseinournation’scapitalthatcan’tgetalong“adinfernostecum”.

Nearlyeverygemandmineral societyhasatleastonememberwhohasbecomethe“go-to”personwhenthesocietyreceivesarequestfroma school or library fora rockpresentationora request froma localBoyScoutleadertohelpscouts earn aGeologyBadge. Bydefault, I’vebecomethatpersonformylocalVenturasociety.Problemis,Ialsohavea

full-timejob,andrequestsforschoolpresentationsgenerallyfallinthemiddleofaworkdayandthereareonlysomanyvacationdaysonmytimecard.

I’vetriedencouragingothers,andwehaveatleastfourorfivememberswhohaveoccasionallysteppedupandgivenaschoolorscoutpresentation,particularlywhenIhaven’tbeenableduetoanout-of-townbusinesstriporameetingIcan’tgetoutof.Thecoredilemmaisthatthevastmajorityofusareamateur rockhounds,notprofessionalgeologists,andmanyfolksfeeluncertainoftheirownknowl-edge,evenfolkswhocanreadilyidentifyeveryrocklaidoutonasilentauctiontable.I’vetriedassuringfellowclubmembersthattheyknowfarmorethana secondgraderwhen it comes to rocksand theearth sciencesand—shouldaquestionarise thattheycan’tanswerinapresentation—it’sperfectlyokaytosay,“Idon’tknow,”andtoencouragethechildaskingthequestiontoseektheanswerintheschoollibraryorontheweb.

Stillfolksarereluctant(afterall,publicspeakingranksrightnearthetopofanxiety-producingeventsformostofus),andI’vehadsomesaytomeaftertheyseeoneofmypresentations,“Ijustdon’tfeelI coulddoasgooda job.” Theyapparentlydon’tappreciatethevalueofpractice,practice,practice.Myveryfirstpresentationwasprettybad(alltalk;nointeraction),butthemorepresentationsyougive,themoreyoufine-tuneandimprove.Asaresult,I’vedecidedtosharemyknowledgeandtheimprove-mentsmadeasa resultof seeingkids’ reactions.Overtheholidays,Isatdowntoputmymostcom-monschoolpresentationsonpaper.Theseincludethedifferencebetweena rockandamineral, thethreerocktypes,volcanoes,mineralidentification,economicusesofminerals, formsof fossilization,dinosaurs, andourCalifornia state rock,mineral,gemstone,andfossil.Foreach,IincludeaLearningObjective,alistofRecommendedMaterials(mostavailableinourclubhouseandmuseumroom),andthenastep-by-stepwalk-throughofthepresentationaccompaniedbyphotosandillustrations.

Theresultisabrief“presenter’smanual”con-tainingtentalksthathavebeentried,tested,andfine-tuned after each classroom visit. I’ve alsoincludeda listofRockhoundjokestohelpenlivenatalkandaglossaryofgeologytermsusedinthepresentations.I’llmostlikelybepostingthistoourAFMSweb site to serveas a concretemodel forothersocieties.Mygoalhasbeentocreatealivingmanualthatwecancontinuallyaddtoandimproveupon,soonce it’sposted, Iwelcomesuggestions,criticisms,andadditions.Let’sallsharetheknowl-edgetoencourageandhelpmorefolksinourlocalsocieties takeanactive rolewithoureducationaloutreach—andtherebysharethefun!

ACROSTICS To write an acrostic poem, we choose a word we wanttowriteabout,spellthewordvertically,thenuseeachlettertobeginthehorizontallineit’son.Eachlinedescribessomethingaboutourword.1

The2012RockhoundsoftheYearfortheRosevilleRockRollersareEd and Cyndy Burchard.EdandCyndyjoinedtheRosevilleRockRollersin2007andquicklysteppedupasvolunteersinseveralcapacities. CyndyandEdtookonthepositionofSunshineChairandareusuallyearlyarrivalsattheclubmeetingsandhelpwithroomsetupandtherefreshmentarea.
