Solidarity In Action spent three weeks advertising the strike without help from the O'Dowd adult leaders, to make it clear that this was a completely youth based event. During the club fair we made posters exhibiting our passion for Climate Justice and our disgust with the leaders who do not take this crisis seriously. Marching in front of big corporations like Amazon Go, PG & E, Nancy Pelosi's office, BlackRock and ICE and more, we made sure that our voices were heard. Climate Justice activist, Greta Thunberg, inspired us with her speech to tackle this issue and make it our responsibility. If we won't, who will?

ONCAMPUS

Solidarity is a genuine feeling of connection and unity. When a person is living in solidarity with a group of people, they have the same common goal of making a positive difference in their community and in each others’ lives. Solidarity is walking in the shoes of others while they are going through hardships. It is making other people's problems your own. My name is Makayla Harden, and this is how my team works and lives in solidarity. The students in Solidarity In Action worked and lived in solidarity with numerous communities, both locally and globally. One student went to the Dominican Republic to live with a host family. While there, she and her friend gathered a whole bunch of people for a trash clean-up day, and they ended up with over half of their community helping them. In the midst of cleaning, she glanced around and saw kids playing and laughing. There was an energy of joy in the air from finally having a clean environment and from creating new fond memories with each other. The student had a feeling of euphoria rush through her when she realized she got to be part of the memories created that day. Another student lives in solidarity with her sibling who came out to their family as being part of the LGBTQ+ community. The student was next to her sibling every step of the way, even when some of the family members were not as accepting. She was there when no one else was. The student stood with and up for her sibling. She advocated for her sibling when they were not there to defend themselves. She encouraged her family members to accept her sibling for the way that they are. The student’s constant support and persistence of conversation led to her

sibling having a better relationship with her family.

Solidarity In Action is filled with students like these and with many more inspiring stories. When we come together, we create a team that has no limits

to what we can accomplish.

The team helped organize and lead the Climate Strike, Seasons of Creations, and Health and Wellness Week. We invite the Bishop O’Dowd community to stand with us during our upcoming events such as, The Bay Area Teach-in for Justice on January 25, 2020, Service-Learning Projects that happen throughout the year, and the Dragon Talks. We also connect students to other organization that gives them opportunities to offer their services outside of O’Dowd.

How does your business work? I resell limited edition shoes for more than I paid online through platforms like

StockX, an online marketplace where you create a portfolio and then are able to sell shoes or streetwear. I also sell on platforms like Stadium Goods and Flight Club that work through consignment, so I’ll send them my shoes and then they will sell them.

How did you get into reselling?I have always been into the idea of reselling things, but it really picked up in eighth

grade when I began reselling shoes. My friend recruited me to Supreme and showed me the aftermarket where I can make money..

What do you think it takes to be a successful entrepreneur?I think it takes passion, If you have drive and motivation you will get there.

Do you collaborate with anyone to help your business?Yeah, I am in a lot of reselling groups online that put out info based on stock

numbers and models of shoes. How has your presence in pop culture affected your business?

Reaching out to rappers and celebrities helps my business because they usually show love back and promote my Instagram page. One time I went backstage at Lil

Mosey’s concert and also at Juice Wrld’s to sell them shoes. What do you see in your future?

I want to go into real estate and build enough capital through shoes to create a steady income so I do not have to have a real job.

If you wanna buy shoes off me, you can follow me and DM me @510kicks on Instagram.

O’Dowd has always been known for the talented individuals on our campus. Whether it is academic or drama, all O’Dowd students are talented in their own specific ways. For example, performing arts is very important here. With all the high-energy students we have, our stage presence is amazing! Want to know what exciting and entertaining events O’Dowd has to offer this semester? Keep reading! For once in a very long time, O’Dowd is doing two different musicals this fall semester! Cabaret and Godspell will be hitting the stage shortly, first with Godspell opening in November and with Cabaret opening in January. Cabaret is a musical set in Berlin, Germany during the rising of the Nazi regime. Clifford Bradhsaw, a british author who travels to Berlin to seek inspiration for his writing, meets Sally Bowles, an American performer who works at a club. A relationship brews between them and chaos begins to arise as the Nazi regime comes to power and Sally becomes pregnant. Godspell, a musical composed of parables from The Gospel according to Matthew. It is about Jesus teaching his followers through music and dance. The theater cast

always impresses everyone more and more each year with their talent and maturity. You do not want to miss the upcoming musicals this semester. The entertainment and professionalism on stage is beyond this world. Come support your friends and fellow students in our beautiful theater. O’Dowd is taking it to the next level and you do not want to miss it! Do you like dancing? This is your lucky chance! Dragons Dance club is officially starting this semester and they are looking for dancers who have been longing to be involved with dance at O’Dowd. Bishop O’Dowd has never had a team, club or class for dance. So, this is the start of something incredibly special. This club will give you the perfect opportunity to express your passion and talent on stage in front of the school. Dancing is incredibly important as it unites people who have different experiences all together, working as a cohesive group to create masterpieces. Not only will you be able to make new friends, but you will also be creating special bonds with everyone since you are surrounding yourself with people who share the same passion as you. There is such a diverse variety of dance styles to choose from and you have the freedom to perform whichever style you desire. Whether you specialize in Hip Hop, Contemporary, Lyrical, we will find a place for you to shine. Do not miss this opportunity to express your passion for dance with the O’Dowd community!

Hailing from Oakland, SWMRS (pronounced “Swimmers”) has been a band since 2004. On Friday September 7 the band played a small show in Emeryville. Lead singer, Cole Becker, talked with me about their band and its message. Would you say your music has a political message? We are pretty aware how far of a reach our platform has and so I'm always thinking about that just like Joe Strummer of the Clash did. He’s somebody who really believed in music as a way of making mass media for people that wasn't operated by the state. The goal is always to write a good song first, but if you can have that and have good messaging that’s great. Songs like “Berkeley's On Fire” is a political song obviously. “Too Much Coffee” is subtly about politics but more how it affects us personally.Your shows have a lot of crowd energy, people having fun together. Do you see that as transforming in any way? A show is a model for how the world can work, especially a punk show. Everybody has their own feelings they're bringing to the table and naturally just by way of dancing everybody's figuring out a way to coexist and feed off of each other and build a community. We hope people take that energy and figure out how it can help them live, creating new communities. People under 25 are so aware of what's at stake in the next few years in our world that you’ve got to give them something to release the energy. What is your song “Lose Lose Lose” about?Patricia Hearst and the Symbionese Liberation Army and how her choices are like ours. I think everybody under 30 has a little bit of a revolutionary in them. But I think when ultimately presented with the option, our system is so tilted towards just making the convenient decision thanks to the hegemony of neoliberalism, that you often end up just going back to whatever is easiest, which is what Patricia Hearst did. What do you want people to take away from your music?Just feeling good; There’s a lot of reasons to feel bad. We’re not going to change everyone’s life. You changing your own life, that’s what we really want. We want everyone who

MUSIC FOR CHANGE: SWMRS, COLE BECKER Fionn Kelly '21

listens to us to be self-sufficient and a good person. And be happy and have fun and enjoy the little things. Why do choose to use punk for this, or did punk choose you?The first show I ever saw was Green Day. We grew up at Green Day shows thanks to our drummer’s Dad being their lead singer. So our ears are tuned to Punk music. So punk was really like the most accessible way for becoming musicians. Is there anything you want to say to the kids at Bishop O’Dowd High School?High School. If you’re enjoying it, then that's awesome. But if you’re not, that's so normal and the world awaits you. Don’t worry. Be nice to your teachers, they’re doing a crazy thankless job and they believe in you.

Quentin Tarantino made a splash this year with his film, "Once Upon A Time in Hollywood" which blew up with critics. In my opinion, it is one of the best movies of

the year. But I’m not here to talk about the movie, but the brilliantly vibrant 1960s soundtrack. The soundtrack features artists like Deep Purple, Paul Revere & The

Raiders, and even Siman & Garfunkel among other classic ‘60s tunes. The movie opens up with the song “Treat Her Right” by Roy Head and The Traits,

which is a great and exciting way to jump right into the movie, immediately setting the ‘60s vibe of the movie. Later in the movie is Deep Purple’s “Hush” which is a

great classic guitar track with killer guitar riffs which is no surprise from the band that made Smoke on The Water, one of the most influential guitar songs of all time.

One song that is reused from another classic soundtrack is Simon & Garfunkel’s, “Mrs. Robinson” from the 1967 movie The Graduate. This song is easily one of my

favorites and the genius of Paul Simon truly shines through as their harmonization and the simplicity of the guitar is as beautiful as a sunrise, proving why it has

endured the test of time. And though I am not new to unpopular opinions, whatI am about to say is definitely one of the bigger ones. The best song on this

compilation is “Good Thing” by Paul Revere & The Raiders. In the context of the movie, it is just an energetic track that makes the listener feel alive. It really puts

you back into the swing of the ‘60s with the amazing guitar solo that is classic 60s and it is great to set the scene of dancing and riding in the car with all the windows

down. Overall, Quentin Tarantino is not only an untouchable director but also still has one of the best tastes of music in Hollywood. Though it is no Pulp Fiction

soundtrack.

On October 4, 2019, “Joker” will be released in US theaters. Joaquin Phoenix, an accomplished actor in Hollywood, known for his dedication to his roles in films, is the latest of several actors to tackle the Joker’s complex and iconic character. Josue Rocha, a student at Bishop O’Dowd, said “I am very excited. I loved the character of Joker in the Batman movies and I can't wait to see a whole movie about him.” The first actor to play the Joker was Cesar Romero, who portrayed the Joker in the original “Batman” series in 1966. However, the Joker is believed to be inspired by Conrad Veidt's character in “The Man Who Laughs”, a silent film released in 1928 about a man who cannot contain his sinister and grin and unsettling laughter. Since Romero, the only actors to play the Joker on screen have been Jack Nicholson in “Batman” (1989), Heath Ledger in “The Dark Night” (2008), and Jared Leto in “Suicide Squad” (2016). It’s a shame to disregard

Nicholson’s and Leto’s performances, but Heath Ledger’s role in Christopher Nolan’s award-winning film is what truly revived the character of the Joker and cemented it as one of the most iconic cinema villains of all time. Shortly after Ledger’s death, which occurred shortly after the movie was finished, his role as the Joker won him best supporting actor award at the 2009 Oscars ceremony. After Leto’s performance as the Joker, which received its fair share of criticism, it became Joaquin Phoenix’s task to rebirth the Joker and create something captivating, yet unique. “He is an accomplished actor and I think he will live up to Heath Ledger’s Dark Knight performance,” said Sam Schick, another student at Bishop O’Dowd. To make sure “Joker” stands apart from the other Batman films involving the Joker, it is based entirely on the Joker himself and the process in which he transformed from a lonely aspiring comedian to a twisted psychopath. One of its main goals is to be as realistic as possible and connect with the audience through the issue of mental health. Obviously, the bar for “Joker” is set quite high and the film is under an immense amount of pressure to do well, but director Todd Phillips and the entire “Joker” cast feel that they have taken the Joker character to new bounds and created a film that is worth people’s attention.

The world of Tik Tok has flooded everyone’s radars along with social media apps, conversations, and free time. Tik Tok is a video platform app that allows people to post videos up to fifteen seconds long about anything. These videos range all the way from comedy skits, cute pet videos, dance routines, to how to make the perfect microwave brownie. In October of 2018, Tik Tok became the number one most downloaded app in the United States and continues to thrive. These videos not only allow young people to spread creativity, but also can be a pathway to fame and even bring the opportunity to earn a profit from each video. Tik Tok has infiltrated every high school’s social climate, including our own. Multiple students have gained all the way from 10,000 to 2 million views on the social media platform. Sophmore, Maya Bartkowiak, 277,000 views on one of her videos, and this number continues to grow. When asked why she joined the app, she said that it was purely out of fascination and then she simply “got hooked”. Maya’s video was to an original, catchy song by @giyuutomioka about volleyball. Maya claimed that she was not very surprised when the

video exploded due to volleyball’s large popularity on Tik Tok. When asked why Tik Tok seems to have gained so much hype in a short amount of time, Maya said,"People have short attention spans,” she described how being able to watch short, entertaining, and funny videos is what everybody wants. Sophomores, Kendall Holliman and Alyssa Ballati also had their moment of stardom with 71,000 and 193,000 views. Kendall claims she joined as a fun activity with friends and was extremely surprised at the sudden attention. Alyssa says she joined out of the rising popularity and

thinks there is so much hype around it due to the big time influencers who use the app. Junior Nuala Gorshow, with over 37,000 followers, most popular post went viral at over 1.7 million views and features a funny skit of herself. When asked why she originally joined Tik Tok, Nuala said it was as a joke and that she “didn’t think

so many people would [actually] see it.” She advises people aspiring to pursue their own Tik Tok career to “post things that show who you really are as a person.” As for why Tik Tok is so popular, Nuala believes it is the “new Vine",it is short, quick, and entertaining. What had first seemed like a joke is now becoming its own career and O’Dowd is making their mark.

COMMUNITY

Thought to be extinct by the 20th century, a small herd of Tule Elk was discovered and reintroduced to Point Reyes National Seashore in the 1970s. Today, the Tule Elk number under 5,000 individuals compared to the 500,000 previously found in California in the early 1800s. The National Park System has proposed a plan that will limit various herds by “lethal removal,” diversify ranch operations, and quadruple land leases to Dairy farmers. For many people, environmental issues feel like far away problems that do not immediately affect their lives. Even if they do care, they seem like such an insurmountable problem that there is nothing they can do. For me, this is something I genuinely and passionately care about. My train of thought is, who am I if I do not try? When I heard about this, I immediately got to work. The Eco Leaders went to public meetings by the NPS, held letter-writing parties, visited classes to talk about the importance of this issue. The bottom line is that this is something that you can really influence and is important to a lot of people. Essentially, the National Park System has been trying to balance the historic ranchers’ and wildlife’s demands since the park’s creation, but in recent years there has been intense conflict due to the growing Elk population. The key factor that has changed is that the Trump Administration has been aggressively deregulating and attacking environmental legislation. What is intended to protect our parks and wild places has been so undercut that special interest groups, like the ranchers, essentially dictate what they can do on our parks, which are publicly owned land. On the flip side, the ranchers originally supported the creation of the park and employ many LatinX workers from the community and jobs. Despite their notoriously environmentally unfriendly record, they have taken measures to lessen the effect of dairy farming on the land and are some of the best organic options in the Bay. In an attempt to find a middle ground, the NPS has drawn up an environmental impact statement that is a whopping 216 pages and come up with several plans of action to compromise. The problem is that the plan that

COLUMN: JOE'S CORNERTULE ELKJoseph Swe eney'20

the NPS has marked as preferred is environmentally disastrous. It has negative effects on water, land, and wildlife. As a team, the Eco Leaders have decided to endorse Alternative F as the last resort. Essentially if the National Parks System is going to force us to choose between wildlife and the Dairy Farms, we will choose the Elk. We will choose our rivers and forests because these are what the National Parks are for. You can have dairy farms almost anywhere. Rangelands are the highest percentage of land use in our country, and we are hoping that this will lead to a more empathetic compromise between both. This summer, I had the amazing opportunity of hiking out to Tomales Point at sunrise to see a herd of Tule Elk with a wildlife photographer and friend. I was struck in absolute awe at the beauty and grace of these huge animals, and to see such a blatant attack on them really has upset me. If any of this has resonated with you, please take the 5 minutes to sign the change.org petition online or write a letter to Point Reyes National Seashore.

Junior, DJ Avent, is extremely talented at creating digital music. He makes beats people love and makes revenue off of selling them to people who want to use

them for personal use. He and other classmates record music like rap and r&b for fun, and it's enjoyed by people both in and outside the O'Dowd community. Avent became interested in making beats in the second grade. At his school, they would

make occasional trips to the computer lab where the desktop computers had a Garageband app available to all Apple users. He experimented with it and has liked

it ever since. Now, DJ uses the programs Logic proX and FL (Fruity Loops) Studios to execute his beats more professionally. His go-to genres for beat making are Hip-

Hop and R&B, however, he has also made beats in the genres Rock, Pop, Blues, and Jazz. The most a person has ever offered him for a beat was $50. Typically, though,

he sells them for $20. He has done collaborations with other artists including but not limited to R&B (a group from his previous school Oakland School of the Arts), P Deuce, Kuya, JAE, and Giankiboy. All of his collaborations tend to be close friends.

Some of his musical inspirations are Travis Scott, MetroBoomin, and Nav. One of his favorite MetroBoomin albums is 19 and Boomin. Avent sees himself making music as a profession because he really enjoys it as a hobby and spends a good amount of time perfecting his craft most days after

school. DJ’s music is on Soundcloud, but he recently deleted everything off his page because he is in the process of rebranding.

Paul Hosemann is a junior at Bishop O’Dowd High School. He now has a really cool job as a photographer for the Oakland Roots. Many people, even I, have asked Paul how he got this amazing job. Paul states “it was a long journey” as he had to contact many people before getting this job. He had to contact two people before he was given the chance to even talk to someone that would eventually give him the job. Sometimes the Marketing Divisions actually do something because that is where Paul got his start taking photos for this new soccer team in Oakland. Paul describes taking photos for the Roots as really cool. Paul has a deep appreciation for the team as he knows many people on the team. His soccer coach and even people he has coached with are on the team and he says it is “really cool to be taking photos of them in action.” He really has developed a deep appreciation for the people behind the scenes as well. These people include the videographers, the players and those that help set up the game. Paul also takes pictures of other things such as sunsets, his friends, and silhouettes. He displays his photography creatively, original, and

dynamic. He has created pictures with a lot of different techniques and uses of light. Paul’s Instagram @paulhosemann_photography shows a lot of these different techniques and encompasses emotions you can only feel, but can’t describe. Those around him are left in awe of his work. Even though Paul’s most recent work has been based around shooting for the Oakland Roots, his older works have been more stationary such as landscapes behind his silhouettes and straight-up landscapes. He has also shot with many Bishop O’Dowd students such as Casey Grady ’21, Sean Cawley ’21, and Sadie McDonnell ’21. Paul is also a lead tutor on O'Dowd's campus and plays soccer for O’Dowd. Last year he was on O’Dowd’s JV Men’s soccer team and he has been a scholar throughout his three years so far at O’Dowd. Paul has taken many AP classes such as AP Psychology that he is taking this year. He even wants to go into cinematography as well as continuing to take photos in the future.

How do you feel about the homeless crisis in the Bay Area? Mia Moore '20: I feel like gentrification is the main cause they are raising the rent high and they are trying to move people out to Pittsburg, Vallejo, and other cities farther away to get people out of the Bay Area. What do you think causes people to go homeless

Mia Moore '20: Drugs can play a huge part in homelessness because they are very accessible, as well as unemployment which is also very common now for people working jobs that give very little pay to support themselves and their families. What are your thoughts on the homeless crisis in the Bay Area?Ms. Dominguez: When I drive past encampments it takes my breath away and makes me sad to see the large amounts of homeless people. What I think is the leading cause of this problem is not having enough money in the Bay Area. What can we do as a whole community and as individuals to help?Ms. Dominguez: I think on an individual level we can offer a kind smile and a dollar. On a city-wide level we need to build affordable housing and open up more job opportunities that pay a little more so that rent is affordable and people can have money left for other necessities. Gentrification plays a huge role in this large homeless epidemic that is going on in the Bay Area. The rent to live here has progressively gotten higher and higher over the years. New houses and apartment complexes are being built and old houses are being renovated to modern fashion. This makes it extremely hard for people with low-income jobs to pay for rent. Some move to outer cities that are close but rent is cheaper. Or some people go homeless because they can't move. Individually, to help, there are multiple food banks in the Bay Area as well as soup kitchens that support and help feed the homeless. There are also Tutoring opportunities in several places to help tutor homeless youth in the afternoon. Lastly, there are programs that help homeless people get back on their feet. They specialize in helping employ and house homeless people.

Many have been asking about a bigger and better gym for years. Athletes have wanted to host NCS and State Championship games on their own domain for years, but have always been told that the gym is too small. Students complain about how hot and stuffy it is inside during P.E. class, athletic events, or even Spirit Week rallies. Well Dragons, your wish will be coming true. I sat down with President J.D. Childs about the plans that will give Bishop O’Dowd a more contemporary look. “The most important thing to us is that it would be connecting to the quad because that’s where everyone is.” The O’Dowd community will be able to walk through the original gym lobby, then proceed to the new gym plus due to the removal of the stage to make room for the hallway in between the two gyms, connecting to the “skyway”, progressing to the new building. Mr. Childs was exhilarated over the added patio looking over the football and baseball fields. Along with the overview in the updated lobby, looking down into the new gym with capacity suitable for 1,300 people. “About three times bigger fan capacity, then what we currently have,” says Mr. Childs, “we will be over to pack the house as well as host NCS and State championship games, plus, there will be more than enough room for rallies.” All of this seems to be on top of the drama and band building. Mr. Childs explains that, yes, this new structure will take place of our current and remote performing arts and music building, but “I call it the ‘new gym plus’ because it is not just a new gym. It’s a black box theater, new classrooms, soundproof band rooms, a new training room..” What about the parking based in that area? “We have to figure out how to reallocate the spaces. We are thinking about putting a parking lot on the 98th street drop off area.” With this new renovation to the O’Dowd, the campus will come

more projects that will benefit the community. Mr. Childs discussed possibly moving the

library into the small gym and putting new classrooms in the library or the possibility of moving the counseling

offices into the small gym and making Dominican Hall new classrooms. The

possibilities are endless, but the current focus is the new gym plus!

FAKE NEWS:CAN YOU SPOT IT?

Faculty, students, parents, and others are bustling with excitement as the ground breaking begins for the Seneca reservoir. This million-dollar expansion will help Bishop O’Dowd become one of the best high schools in the Bay Area. George S. Louis, the renowned and successful architect behind the development foresees an amazing project and is ready for the work to begin. “The time has finally come to expand Bishop O’Dowd High School into the most technologically advanced high school in the Bay Area” Louis explains. Many students are very excited about the new sporting facilities, a major part of the expansion. This will include a large swimming pool, soccer fields, tennis courts, a sand volleyball court, a new weight room, additional locker rooms, and much more! Four-year varsity starting soccer player and captain Grace Porter exclaimed, “I am so excited for the new soccer fields. They will elevate our practice and playing environment. I recently visited the site and things are coming along very well.” Additionally, varsity basketball player Cade Ronzone is excited about the new weight room because it will have more equipment and a larger area for working out. “We know that the expansion benefits the sports programs, however, we truly want to emphasize academics. It all starts in the classroom. “We call them student-athletes for a reason,” states board member William Smith. The board is working to establish an academic center geared towards student-athletes, students in the drama program, and students with time-consuming extracurricular activities. O’Dowd hopes to provide more support for these students. In addition to the new sports facilities, the engineers are going to build several more classrooms and a living lab expansion. Finally, the board plans to build an additional parking lot. “Oftentimes I have to wake up very early in the morning so I can get to school on time to park or I spend a lot of time looking for parking at school” explains senior Cameron Hawkins. The board hopes that this new parking lot will allow students to spend more time on their studies or extracurriculars rather than stressing about parking. All are ready and cannot wait to see what this amazing project brings to O’Dowd!

Are you trafficking unknowingly in fake news? Are you a quick forwarder or sharer of outrageous things about your political foes? Do you NOT believe in the science behind vaccinations or skin color as adaptation? The best remedy for fake news is a public, informed with healthy skepticism and skilled in critical thinking their approach to consuming news. Here is some key vocabulary that you might have heard surrounding this issue:

Ripped Off: These are the phony pics of Alex Caruso. The problem of fake news in the sports world is here, and it’s our job to evaluate what’s true and what’s false.

FROM TROLLS TO DEEP FAKESA Guide to Key Terms of the Issue

FAKE NEWS:CAN YOU SPOT IT?

COLLATERAL DAMAGEFake News Invades Sports WorldMat t D esler '21

Propaganda is particularly biased or misleading information that is used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view.

Trolls are people on the internet who instigate arguments and provoke emotional responses from other people on the online community.

Deepfakes are a form of photoshopping that uses artificial intelligence to alter video content, portraying something that did not actually occur.

Unnamed sources are used in a work, that is not reliable because it is not identified. Often times, people use fake quotes from an “unnamed source” to support their argument.

Filter bubbles occur when users are presented with news, articles, and advertisements based on our own searches and interests. This “bubble” restricts us from seeing views and opinions different from our own online.

Echo Chambers are similar to filter bubbles. An echo chamber is a closed system on the internet that does not allow for differing views or concepts to be seen by the viewer. You are hearing only your own view.

Clickbait are stories or advertisements online that purposefully use dra-matic and fabricated headlines or pictures to grab the viewer’s attention. Their "articles" are usually shallow, conspiratorial, and filled with ads. Satire/Parody websites and social media platforms use fake news stories that in exaggerated and humorous ways for entertainment and deliberate exaggeration for comic effect.

Sloppy journalism occurs when reporters or journalists publish a story with unreliable or misleading information.

Misleading headlines may attach to stories that are not completely fake but are misrepresented with sensationalist headlines.

Biased/slanted news is a type of fake news that confirms the viewer’s own beliefs, and may get displayed in your feed based on your personal-ized searches.

Fact Checkers are websites and organizations that check the veracity of comments made in the media. Snopes, FactCheck.org and Politifact are three examples of these services.

Earlier this month, the Fake News epidemic reached the National Basketball Association. This incident involved young rising Lakers star Alex Caruso, who went undrafted out of Texas A&M in 2016 but rose to stardom this past season with his electric dunks and smooth outside shot. Caruso has also become popular on social media as the center of many jokes regarding his “old man look” including a receding hairline and modest physical appearance. This offseason, photoshopped pictures of Caruso working out in the gym surfaced on social media, portraying Caruso as ripped, showing off his huge muscles. These photos reached some of the largest platforms on Instagram and Twitter, catching the attention of thousands of basketball fans across the country, who believed the big hoax. Questions rose of how Caruso was able to accomplish this incredible body transformation in such a short span of time. The altered photos quickly reached the attention of the NBA league offices, who then sent Caruso a “random drug test.” The NBA supposedly suspected Caruso of using performance-enhancing drugs to fuel his insane body transformation, which was all fake in the first place.

Caruso took to social media via his Instagram story regarding the incident, joking about the photoshopped pictures of him. He plans to come back stronger than ever this next season, just not “steroid strong.” Believe it or not, this is not the first incident of fake news in the sports world by any means. Fake news stories have reached the NFL, which has become a fairly political league concerning social inequality in America. A couple of years ago, an altered photo showed defensive star Michael Bennett burning an American flag. More recently, certain false rumors about players and trades have spread, generating responses from players like Antonio Brown on social media using the term “fake news.”

Fake news can be classified as any informative news story or report that deliberately misleads or misrepresents an audience in order to increase views or promote a political agenda. This has become a larger issue amid technology allowing media producers to alter numbers or images. In the 2016 election, fake news played a role in the misrepresentation of polling numbers as well as in the construction of news stories detracting from the character of each candidate. For example, in December 2016, a shooting at a pizzeria inspired some journalists to conspire that Hillary Clinton was headquartering a child sex ring. Following this event, a poll was conducted upon registered voters and about half expressed that they were neutral or believed the belief. These misreported events, despite the example’s absurdity, often appear quite truthful or believable. Today, fake news still reigns the internet, making its mark on social media such as Facebook and Snapchat as well as on Google. The issue has grown to a magnitude wherein many different sources are becoming involved together in the creation of codes of conduct and fact-checkers. As Americans approach the primary and caucus season within the larger 2020 presidential election season, impacts of fake news may alter the effects of the primaries or the election at large, potentially destroying the credibility of candidates and nominees alike. Fake news is bad because of its effects of disinformed decision-making and unchangeable viewpoints paired with its appearance of verity. The lack of scanning and critical reviewing helps fake news to circulate more quickly, especially with the shock value many fake news pieces

encompass.

So, how can one catch fake news? Here are some questions to ask:• Is the story being reported anywhere else? • Are the supporting sources reliable? • Does it have a current date? • Is it a well-known site or author that is trusted? • Do the photos and videos look realistic? • Is the website address normal (e.g. ending in ‘.com’ or ‘.co.uk’)? • Is it a believable story?

Consumers of information should also confer with other sources to ensure biases do not further skew information or the portrayal of information. By answering these questions and checking with other sources, media consumers can intake information more meaningfully and critically, ensuring that one does not hold disinformed beliefs and values or make poor decisions.

Did you always know you would be destined to become a successful director, writer, actor and musician?Definitely not, I did love the arts though. Especially music. When I was at O’Dowd I was in a punk band that included a few other former O’Dowd students. That’s when it turned me on to some kind of creative expression, but I didn’t know until later where I was heading.

We were extremely proud to find out you were a former Dragon. How did your time at O'Dowd impact you and the person you have become? Even though I have fond memories of O’Dowd, I was somewhat of an antisocial teenager. Playing music was my outlet. It was where I learned to express myself and turn it into something cool.

Do you still play in a punk band? Did you start in Oakland? We started in Oakland and we still see each other occasionally but unfortunately we are no longer a band. It would be great to have a band reunion, maybe someday.

How was it like growing up in Oakland? Do you see a difference today?I was a kid growing up in the 80’s & 90’s, don’t know how much it’s changed in the last 20

you proud! Matt Bettinelli-Olpin, Class of 96’, recently directed the blockbuster thriller movie, Ready or Not. In our interview, we get to see the mastermind behind this crazy, exciting movie and see what makes him the legend he is today.

Do you have any advice for young filmmakers/directors out there? Is there a way to weed out the deceitful people from the trustworthy people in your line of business?Believe in yourself because no one else is going to at first. Have a point of view - just know what you're trying to say. The biggest one is don't worry at all about failure. Embrace the failure. It’s the perseverance that actually makes it good, that you really have to stick to it if you believe in it.

You formed a production company called Radio Silence with Rob & Chad. How did you meet and decide to form your company? We had a similar taste and we just wanted to make stuff; we didn’t want to ask for permission and have to fit into a system. It’s not that hard to make something anymore. You can get a camera and a cheap computer now and it’s free and there’s distribution like YouTube and other outlets out there. So the distance between wanting to and being able to is a lot shorter than it used to be.

What is your most memorable film that you’ve done and why?I really loved making Ready or Not. It was a particularly charmed experience. I have a lot of fond memories of making all of our movies because when your making a movie you get close to people and it’s such a fun community to build.

What, in your opinion, is the most important quality of being a Film Director?Being open to collaboration and working with other people. It’s funny. You have the final say for everything well, unless your producer tells you otherwise, but I think the only way it really works is if you work well with other people and collaborate.

What is your creative process like?Equal parts fun, exciting, daunting, and overbearing. When you’re in the beginning of something, you never know what it’s going to be; you’re just creating something out of nothing, so it seems like such a gigantic hill to

climb, and then all of a sudden, you’re at the other end of it. My favorite part of the process is the actual physical making of it, like shooting it and editing it. Everything leading up to that is all so conceptual. You don’t know where it’s going to land; a lot of it’s all done by faith.

We loved your thriller Ready or Not. How did you come up with the story? It’s unique and we laughed a lot. It must be hard to create a horror/thriller/comedy? The screenplay writers Guy Busick and R. Christopher Murphy wrote this really great script and we worked on it with them for a couple of years. And it morphed into the bride on her wedding night. The idea was, can we say something and also give the audience a really good time without being heavy handed? Can we have a really nice commentary, and can we also be entertaining? This movie was a lot of fun to make.

How would you describe a day in the life of Matt Bettinelli Olpin?I have a three year old so that consumes a lot of it. I also have been working together with a group of guys for a decade now batting around ideas and trying to figure out what we’re doing. I like the creative process and being able to do it every day is very fun.

What’s next for you? Can you tell us more about your upcoming project(s)?We are focused on writing a bunch of stuff for the rest of the year so maybe next year we could start shooting.

Any chance of O’Dowd being in any of your projects?Sure! Can we shoot there?

We certainly hope so!

years but I still see Oakland as one of the greatest, most dynamic diverse cities in the world. I love the people and the community. I love the entire ethos and ethics of growing up here and what you learn in terms of how you treat people, how to be positive. All my favorite music is from Oakland. My friends and I hung out on weekends around the Lake Merritt area; Grand Lake Theater was the in movie theater. When I was a kid my dad used to take me to the Paramount theater for the Friday night classics which is where I fell in love with movies. My parents still live there in the same house I grew up in, so when I come up to visit them and my friends, Oakland still feels like home.

What or who has influenced you the most in the roles you play in your career?Growing up in Oakland you get taught to do it yourself, believe in yourself. Kind of, if you break the rules, fine, just know what rules you’re breaking. Have your own point of view, it’s ingrained in you if you are from the Bay Area, that had a lot to do with it. The punk bands, the hip hop, all of it. I make movies now, but I do feel a lot of that comes from going to Gilman (Alternative Music Foundation in Berkeley), listening to independent hip hop and just learning that you don’t need someone to tell you it’s okay to do it. You just do it.

What route did you take to get into filmmaking? Did you and do you still face a lot of roadblocks out there? There was no easy route. It’s a constant learning process. I spent twenty years writing and making things for ten. I started in UC Santa Cruz, but it wasn’t until I moved to LA and started do stuff with my camera that I felt like I was in love with it. I was always a fan of movies, but they always seemed out of reach to make a movie until you just start chipping away towards that. As gigantic as the roadblocks were, I just didn’t care and eventually they just disappeared on their own because you learn how to make the thing you want to make and it’s having that do it yourself - go figure it out ethic that was a big part of me learning to make movies. Don’t take no for an answer.

CHAMPIONS

With the official ribbon cutting and Chase Center Block Party, the new state of the art arena is now the place to be! It’s official opening date was September 3rd and the 1st main event started off with a much anticipated and incredible show by the band Metallica on September 6th. The idea of Chase Center was first introduced by the front office of the Warriors and SF city council in 2012. The Golden State Warriors had been playing in Oakland, at the legendary Oracle arena, since 1971 till 2019 and “Dub Nation” has had several impactful runs and moments in Bay Area and Basketball history. From the ’70s and on the organization had several ups and downs yet despite the hardships, the Warriors have won 5 NBA championships and four since the ’70s. Three of those four have come off the dynasty that has been built in the last 7 years. It started with drafting the greatest shooter of all time, Stephen Curry, and then Klay and Draymond. These players led the Golden State Warriors to win their first championship in 40 years against the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2015, then losing to the Cavs in 2016, which led to the signing of Kevin Durant, a monumental moment in NBA history. The Warriors won the Finals again in 2017 and 2018 and lost in 2019 due to detrimental injuries. Despite the loss in 2019, this team is argued as the best team in the history of the NBA and the history of sports. With the loss of KD, Iggy, and Livingston, the team added the young star D’Angelo Russel, to the squad. To say the least, the Warrior's future is bright and very intriguing due to the new team they have built and the new journey they are about to embark on in San Francisco. Chase Center is composed of multiple layers and floors,

COLUMN: LEVY'S LAYOUTTHE NEW CHASE CENTERMays L ev y'21

has a seating capacity of 18,064 and a multi-purpose area that includes a theater configuration with an entrance overlooking a newly built park. Chase Center also includes a 35,000 square foot public plaza/recreation area designed by landscape architecture firm SWA Group. The arena includes a parking facility of approximately 950 spaces and is accessible to public transportation around the area. A new light rail line has now finished construction that will link the arena and the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) to downtown hotels, convention centers, and subway and commuter rail lines that serve the entire Bay Area. With a $1 billion investment, Chase Center anchors a district of 11 acres of restaurants, cafés, offices, public plazas, and a new five-and-a-half-acre public waterfront park. The Warriors have their pre-season tip-off at Chase Center on October 5th against the Los Angeles Lakers and regular-season tip-off against the Los Angeles Clippers on October 24th. Buckle up, the new season is about to begin.

With Jimmy Gorropolo making his season debut, the team is going to rely

heavily on their starting quarterback who received a whopping 5-year, $137.5 million dollar deal. The 49ers are looking to contend for the 2019 playoffs and to do so, they will need Garoppolo at his best for the rest of the season. The team is going to have to look at their season's results and are going to have to make a decision on what they will do if Jimmy Gorropolo doesn't perform up to expectations. The 49ers with the second overall pick in the NFL draft selected all-pro pass rusher, Nick Bosa. The team expects Bosa to bring that pressure to quarterbacks the team has lacked over the years. The 49ers are looking to improve on their offensive schemes from last year as third-year head coach, Kyle Shannahan looks to bring diversity in the 49ers playbook. Going into this NFL season, the 49ers are ranked No.16 in the ESPN power rankings. The team made a couple of offseason moves to improve the club. They signed pass rusher, Dee Ford to a 5-year $85 million dollar contract to pair alongside their two young stars Nick Bosa and Deforest Buckner on the defensive line. If your a 49ers fan, or even just an NFL fan, you probably have heard the name, George Kittle. After his breakout year last year, the 49ers tight end made his first pro-bowl in his second year in the NFL. The 49ers selected him in the 2017 NFL draft with the 146th in the fifth round. In his breakout season last year, he recorded 88 receptions, 1,377 yards, along with 5 touchdowns. George Kittle has such a great season the 49ers promoted him to one of the captains of the team. With the 2019 season in full effect, the 49ers will expect a lot from Kittle to continue on his performance from last season.

What are some of the basics of Waterpolo?Alexander Kuesel: One is eggbeater, which is moving your legs as an egg beater or mixer would. Another thing would be being able to shoot and pass and having a really good ball and feet court awareness because in the water you don't see people as easily so you have to be super aware of your surroundings. How has being a team captain affected your leadership skills? Or have you

gained any new skills because of your roles?Alexander Kuesel: Being captain last year as well, I feel that talking to coaches and having the experience of communicating with adults and kids and expressing my teammate's feelings and opinions to the coachHow long have you been playing water polo and do you plan on playing in college or for a club?Luke Pfeiffer: I have been playing water polo since sixth grade, which is about six years now, and I don't play club outside of O’Dowd and I don’t plan on playing in college so this is probably the last season of water polo I will ever play in my life How do you feel about the season and how do you think you will do?Luke Pfeiffer: I think we are really strong actually, last year we were ranked number one going into NCS and then fell short in the semi-finals sadly so this year we are going to look for some redemption and hopefully win the league again two times in a row Why do you play water polo? Ben Isola: I play because it is fun and it gets me in good shape. I have met a lot of new people and made new friends too. How has water polo helped with skills outside of the sport? Ben Isola: Communication skills, leadership and it helps me be more inclusive.

With only a few weeks left in the MLB season, the Oakland A’s are fighting to earn the first or second spot in the AL Wild Card. It is a tight race with the Cleveland Indians and the Tampa Bay Rays. The last few weeks of the season are very crucial for these teams. The A’s are hoping to go further than last year when they played in the Wild Card against the New York Yankees. Sadly, the season came to an end when they were defeated by the Yankees 7-2 in the Wild Card game. The Wild Card game is a one-game playoff where the top two teams face off. The Oakland A’s finish the season on the road against the Seattle Mariners. They have to go on a winning streak to get and hold the top seed of the Wild Card. Sean Manea is back in the starting pitching rotation after being out from Tommy John Surgery, where they replaced his torn ligament with a healthier one in his elbow. This was a big loss for them when he hit the injured list. The A’s are now happy that he is now 100% healthy and picking up where he left off. They may be able to catch the Houston Astros for the Division but we will have to see, as the season goes on, we are waiting to see how far the A’s will go.
