HOME of ETERNITY
Shalom! Each week during our religious school tefilah service with the older students, we talk about and study Psalm 150. I bring this prayer to their attention because it is the closest proof text we have to knowing what may have happened in the Temple in Jerusalem over 2000 years ago. We typically think that only
sacrifices were offered in the Temple. However, Psalm 150 reveals that hymns of praise were offered as well.
The words of Psalm 150 call for the joyous and noisy praise of God to resound from the divine sanctuary (the Temple), to the very heavens themselves where God dwells! God is to be praised using every conceivable musical instrument: horns, strings, pipes, cymbals, and drums….a symphony of praise.
For some, the use of instruments during prayer may feel more like a concert than worship. For others, it is invigorating and adds a whole new dimension to our worship service. Let me share with you why the use of instrumentation at this point in our service is so fitting.
Psalm 150 is the concluding psalm in a series of psalms in this section of our morning liturgy called P’sukei D’zimra, Verses of Song. This section is the warm up to one of the main rubrics of our liturgy, the Shema and Her Blessings, and helps prepare us to pray. It is fitting that this section would end with Psalm 150, since this is the quintessential psalm. How can we possibly top Psalm 150’s list of how we are to praise God? Especially the last line which states, “Let everything that breathes praise God. Hal’luyah!”
It is no coincidence that the Psalm starts out by calling us to praise God with all forms of instrumentation. This is the physical aspect of praise. We need to use our hands and
bodies -- clapping, stomping, playing of instruments, and even dancing to connect with God. Just as it says in Psalm 35:10 “Let all my bones exclaim: Who is like You Adonai?” and later in Psalm 103:1 “Bless Adonai O my soul, let my inner being praise Your Holy Name.” First we must express ourselves using our physical resources, and then, when we have exhausted that medium, we can turn to the spiritual means.
This holds true for other prayers that we see in our liturgy. In V’ahavta for example, we are asked to love God “with all your heart, with all your soul…” First with the heart, the physical, and then with the soul, the spiritual. We see this in Mi Shebeirach as well when it says, “the renewal of body, the renewal of spirit.” Again, the spiritual follows the physical.
Jews are a very practical people. We cannot concentrate on the spiritual if we are concerned about our physical well-being. We must first meet our physical needs before we can turn inward and focus on our spiritual beings and the nourishing of our souls.
This is explained by a midrash on Psalm 150 which explains that after 149 attempts at praising God in the psalms, physical words will not suffice. Instead, we turn to sound – to music and instruments – to raise our spirits and praise God. Ultimately, we become the instrument ourselves by praising God with our very breath. “Let all who breathe praise God. Hal’luyah!”
So bring along your instrument, your voice and your breath, and join us in raising our spirits to praise God through joyous and diverse musical sounds. The third Friday of every month we offer the Mizmor Shir! Shabbat Service at 7:30pm in the Sanctuary. This service features joyous music with piano, guitar, woodwinds, percussion and rousing singing as depicted in Psalm 150. After all, Psalm 150 is the ultimate crescendo in the musical symphony of praises that we offer to God! Hal’luyah!

NOVEMBER CALENDAR
Poetry Reading at Temple SinaiWednesday, November 9th, 7:00pm, Albers ChapelJudy Maher, David Shaddock, and Richard Silberg
From tiny Midwestern corn towns to Oakland, Saudi Arabia, and Boston, Judy Maher’s poetry is her way of affirming, “This is me. I am here. This is how I look at life, what I’m learning.” She hopes that those who read or
hear her poems will say, “Yes, that’s it. That’s life. That’s how it goes.”
David Shaddock is an award winning poet, psychotherapist, and student of Jewish mysticism. His most recent book is Vernal Pool, which includes 18 poems based on the Book of Psalms. His poems have appeared in Tikkun and Mother Jones among others.
And our master of ceremonies will be poet, editor, and translator, the inimitable Richard Silberg.

Holiday Food Drive for Greenleaf School, November 19 – December 14Help Hungry Families over Winter Break. Many children at Greenleaf Elementary School, one of our Literacy Project partner schools, receive free breakfast and lunch at school every day. Temple Sinai has volunteered to help fill in the gap during the two-week winter-holiday break. Please help by donating non-perishable food and new, unopened toiletries for these children and their families. Bring your donations to the marked bins at Temple by Monday, December 14. Questions? Helen Smiler, [email protected] or Teri Bleckner, [email protected].
Celebrate the 5th Night of Hanukkah with a Literacy Mitzvah Share the 5th Night tradition by donating a favorite Preschool - 8th grade book (or books) to
the Literacy Project for students in our Oakland partner schools.
Starting any time in November or December, recycle a beautiful book (new or gently used; not Jewish themed) from your shelf or make a purchase from a local bookstore. Donation book bin is
in the Temple living room.
We give away 3000 paperback books each year, and your Hanukkah gift will go directly to children in the Oakland community and on school libraries’ bookshelves. Monetary donations are also appreciated! Questions? Contact Jean Stein at [email protected]
Adopt-a-Family Program/Greenleaf Elementary School, OaklandMany needy families at Greenleaf do not have the means to purchase holiday gifts for their children. Adopt-a-Family fills this void. Last December, Temple Sinai’s families and friends adopted 58 families, bringing joy to 138 children.
As donors, you will be given the names, ages, and specific wish lists for the children so that you know exactly what items to shop for.
The last day for adopting a family: Friday, December 2.
The last day for delivering wrapped gifts to Greenleaf School: Wednesday, Dec. 14.
We encourage you to join this worthy program, now in its 12th year. Contact either congregant Flora Feldman at [email protected] or Rodolfo Perez (outreach coordinator at Greenleaf School) at [email protected] or (510) 379-6939.
Thank you to Tom Revelli, owner of Montclair Sports, for once again donating 25 pairs of new shoes to our Literacy Project for families in need at Greenleaf Elementary School.
