Last-Minute Destination Weddings

If you've always envisioned being married outdoors on the beach or in the mountains, both Shenandoah National Park and Virginia Beach are great locations for a scenic ceremony, but you may need a special permit depending on the size and location of your wedding. At the park, you won't need a permit if you hold your wedding at Big Meadows Lodge or Skyland, either inside or on the beautiful terraces overlooking the mountains, but you do need a special events permit if you choose an outdoor location in the park.

Further south, Kalaloch is the most popular of the Olympic peninsula beaches. Two nearby campgrounds, as well as the Kalaloch Lodge, make this an ideal national park beach for families, and a destination in itself. This is a wide, sandy beach hemmed in by a classic coastal forest, with Kalaloch Rocks, a series of sea stacks, just offshore. Piles of massive driftwood have been shoved up by the tides against the forested slopes. At low tide, when the rocks are left sitting in their shallow pools, you can poke around to find starfish and barnacles.

Off-the-beaten path saves money, offers fresh view

Delaware North Cos. Parks & Resorts President Rick Abramson says the Explorer Cabins at Yellowstone offer an alternative to rustic cabins or traditional hotel rooms. They're dog-friendly and feature fireplaces, granite counters, front porches, WiFi and flat-screen televisions. The 50-cabin property is scheduled to open July 1.Different from "glamping," the "glamorous camping" that lends itself to luxury linens, gourmet meals and personal butlers or maids, "cabineering" is designed for people who like to be out in nature "but they like all the creature comforts of home," Abramson told UPI. "We're trying to relate to a bigger cross-section of America, people ... that haven't visited the parks for one reason or another.“
